DARE: We love your motto, ‘Grab Life By The Love Handles!’, can you share its meaning? SOPHIA: Thank you, I love it too! ‘Grab Life By The Love Handles’ is a way of living where you do all the things that you want to do, no matter your body size. So many women withdraw themselves from certain activities or don’t go for their dreams because they feel they’re broken, not enough and are ashamed of their bodies—I certainly was! I grew up as an athletic, competitive swimmer, so when I began gaining weight in university, I felt huge body shame. I tried to hide beneath baggy clothes and felt like I would never be able to date the hot guys. At work, I was so nervous about giving presentations, that I’d lose confidence and come across like a robot. Eating with people was a nightmare! I’d order salad at restaurants but pick up a burger and fries on the way home because I was too embarrassed to eat anything that would allow

My life changed when I asked for help and received support from coaches. I began tapping into my courage, and my relationship with my body and my weight became more loving and filled with self-care. I began dating hot men, giving inspiring
presentations, eating fabulous food in front of other people, and I swam publicly in a bikini. I even led a workshop where we were all naked—in full light! When I came out of the closet as a fat woman, I claimed my body as it is NOW, and no longer equate my worthiness and confidence to how my body looks. My world became a friendlier and happier place: I own my curves, my talents, and ALL the parts of me. I’ve got more energy than I’ve had in years and take great care of my body because I really, really love it.

S: I have so many! Bottom line is this—and I know this from talking to lots of men—confidence is sexy. When we don’t feel good in our bodies and when we don’t rock our curvaliciousness, it’s hard to show up on a date feeling confident. When we have self-love, when we recognize how incredible we are, when we feel worthy of love, confidence flows out of us naturally and easily—it’s magnetic! The problem is that most women focus on what they hate about themselves.
