Supermodel Ashley Graham has partnered up with plus size fashion retailer Addition Elle to create her own line of lingerie. The Nebraskaborn beauty created the collection with the goal of flattering women’s bodies of all shapes and ages, with sizes in the ranges of 36DD-DDD, 38-42 C-DDD and 44 C-DD. The 14-piece collection comprises of boudoir-inspired panties, bras and vintage-style chemises. Graham’s lingerie is now available at Addition Elle stores across Canada and online at additionelle.com.
It’s been a few years since Isabel and Ruben Toledo designed a fashion collection in part with a mass-market retailer. From a swimwear line for Target to a shoe line for Payless, the husband-and-wife team are now creating a capsule collection for plus size retailer Lane Bryant. The plus size market has been virtually untapped by big name designers so far, making this a large step forward in the fashion world. The Toledos’ collection will start with a novelty tee-shirt and a tote bag for the holidays, followed by a spring 2014 readyto-wear line. The collection will be available in online.

A new baby on the way isn’t the only upcoming event in Gwen Stefani’s life. The singer and fashion designer collaborated with OPI on a limited-edition seven-shade nail lacquer collection set to launch January 2014. Each hue was inspired by Gwen’s bold beauty looks, including a red lacquer called Over & Over A-Gwen based on her signature red lipstick. Although the other six shades are sold individually, the red lacquer is only available in a DIY nail design boxed set complete with nail glue, Swarovski black crystals and silver, gold and pewter studs in different shapes. Each individual polish will retail for $10.95 at professional salons and spas across Canada, with the boxed set priced at $19.

CABIRIA MAKES HISTORY Award-winning designer Eden Miller makes history on the runway with her curvy collection Cabiria, the first plus size line to show at New York Fashion Week. Eden shares her experience with DARE. BY ERIN THOMAS ERIN: How did you get your start in the industry? EDEN: I started when I was eight years old, working in a nursing home with my mom and learning to sew from the old ladies there—they were perfectionists! Then, I worked in a custom clothing shop, which had a costume shop in the back with vintage costume and pageant pieces going back to the 1940s.When I was 17 I moved to New York to pursue my dream to become a costume designer, which I did for many years [after that]. ERIN: Do you feel you’ve opened the door for other plus size designers to show at Fashion Week in the future? EDEN: I very much hope I have, but I’m a realist. The NYFW show is an invitational with a very high price tag to show. Designers commonly spend between $20,000 to $500,000 on these one-off events and there are 1300 of them every season. The price of entry is prohibitive for most and I’m simply lucky I was in a position to take part with this great not-for-profit organization. ERIN: Where do you see Cabiria at this time next year? EDEN: If I’m lucky and I play my cards right, I hope to be selling (more) internationally—we just got our first shop in the UK. I’ll be in a retail chain like Nordstrom or Dillard’s here in the States and be able to expand to more style options per season. I really want to find an investor this year to really capitalize on all this momentum and give what plus size consumers really want in the marketplace—better options!

ERIN: Cabiria was the first plus size collection to show at NYFW. How did the opportunity come about? EDEN: When I was starting my line, I went to The Fashion Law Institute, part of Fordham Law School, for very specific advice for fashion and business crossover. The woman who runs it, Dean and Professor Susan Scafidi, loved my work and asked me to take part in the showcase based on the merit of my designs. It was only after I looked into it that everyone realized that they had made a groundbreaking choice.

Lambert appropriately believes that sexiness has no size—despite how the media represents curvy women. Lambert further asserts her thoughts on how plus size women are often marginalized and mostly used for humour in movies and TV, “[In the media] there isn’t a place for plus size women to be romantic. I feel very sexy and I feel very empowered and I feel like I could have a great love story,”—and she’s not entirely wrong. While we love the comedienne Rebel Wilsons and Melissa McCarthys of the world, they’re seldom seen in a sexy, romantic way that you’d see a thin lingerie model portrayed. Lambert told us that self-esteem is a process, and no matter your size, you have to own it. Her secret: “I think it’s because I’ve invested a lot of love into myself and my physical body. I really value myself and have taken time for me.” She does say there’s a fine line when discussing health issues: you can be curvy and gorgeous, but you still need to take care of yourself. However, she maintains that she still makes time for the sweet things in life: “Not feeling shame when you say, ‘yeah, I’m going to have dessert tonight because I fucking want ice cream.’” And since we’re all about sexiness and empowerment, her mantra fits just right. Ice cream and all.

I’ve invested a lot of love into myself and my physical body.
Mary Lambert is a woman on top of the world. After her song was selected to be a part of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love,” which led to the full-length track “She Keeps Me Warm,” Lambert landed an MTV Video Music Award and has been a star on the rise ever since. But, as Mary Lambert has learned, celebrity status is best used when it comes with a message: Love yourself no matter who you are. Lambert has been dabbling in songwriting since she was 7 and she wrote her first “decent” song at 10. However, she admits her poetic style wasn’t refined until she went to college. Her talent is obvious, but she talks about her accomplishments with much humility and modesty. An advocate for both plus size women (and how the media views the curvy community) as well as gay rights, the curvaceous and openly lesbian Lambert preaches for equality in every sense of the word; and uses her music as a means to share this with the world. The lighthearted singer, songwriter and poet says with a laugh, but with the most sincerity, “I care so much about the world— this is going to sound so cheesy—and I feel like some of the heartbreaks in humanity can be solved through art and music.” But it’s people like Lambert whose faith in humanity to change and do good that we should be looking to for inspiration.
