We did it! After months of chilly and sunshineless days, we have finally made it to summer: a time of happiness, brightness and liveliness. With the warmer months comes the urge to rid yourself of your heavy (and sometimes sticky) skinny jeans and toasty cardis, while we welcome in colourful, lightweight clothes with less coverage. Yes, we said less coverage. While it may seem intimidating, this season is the time of the year to bare it all! Playful crop tops, denim shorts, strapless dresses, cut-out swimsuits and anything else that makes you feel comfy and cool: wear it. Not sure how to style or where to shop these pieces? That’s where we come in. Our featured bloggers are all about flaunting their curves throughout the summertime (and you should be too!). While our swimwear story with beauty Denise Bidot on page 21 reminds us that summer isn’t only for size zeros. We are happy to report that the modelling industry has never looked so diverse. Last summer after Ford Models shut down its plus size division leaving many models without representation, a new group called ALDA emerged. Models Marquita Pring, Inga Eiriksdottir, Ashley Graham, Julie Henderson and Danielle Redman formed together to promote healthy self-esteem in girls, and we couldn’t be prouder. ALDA signed with well-known agency IMG Models in January and since then, the label “plus size” has been removed, leading to more curvy models getting booked. With the demand of size 14+ clothing increasing seven per cent this year, this is the right move for agencies. Check out ALDA’s Instagram @aldawomen and join the demand for diversity.

Alda Alters the Atmosphere

The Twitter community erupted on the eve of Adele’s 26th birthday when the pop star teased that her long anticipated new album ‘25’ would be released by the end of 2014. Rumour has it that collaborations with Wiz Khalifa and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder are to be expected. The British beauty put her career on hold for a couple of years to concentrate on her relationship with beau Simon Konecki, and their 18-month-old son Angelo. Ready to get back in the game, Adele announced her musical return last year at the Grammy Awards, and has also promised the one and only Simon Cowell that she will be occupying a seat on The X Factor panel as soon as she’s done working on her upcoming album. Until then, we’ll be waiting, Adele!

This spring, Canada’s leading plus size fashion retailer ADDITION ELLE partnered with seven of the country’s top design schools and launched its first-ever Little Black Dress Design Contest. The challenge was to create a trio of fall-appropriate LBDs and designer Sandra Al-Dabbagh from Toronto’s Academy of Design created the collection that stood out from over 50 submissions. The brand’s Vice President of Marketing and Visual Display, Roslyn Griner was stunned by the talent shown and was pleased that the contest turned out to be a grand success, raking in over 30,000 votes. Sandra’s designs will be sold in stores and online at additionelle.com this fall.

Did you know that before comedy, actress Melissa McCarthy studied fashion design? In an interview with Redbook Magazine, the celebrity spoke about her challenge finding a designer to dress her for the Academy Awards in 2012. Melissa revealed, “I asked five or six designers—very high-level ones—and they all said no.” This inspired the starlet to create her own plus size clothing line hoping to minimize the disappointments many women face when shopping. We can’t wait to see her clothing collection put the Hollywood designers who rejected her to shame!

JAMES: I’m both a film editor and producer of documentaries and fiction films. Giovanna and I met in film school where we worked together on a few of small film projects. We hit it off right away and knew that there was going to be something big in our future. When Giovanna approached me with the idea for a documentary that focuses on plus size models, I immediately knew that this was a film that needed to be made. GIOVANNA: The inspiration for A Perfect 14 started out with me following model Elly Mayday’s

career through social media. She inspires me enormously and was the introduction for me into the world of plus size models. I couldn’t help but start to conceptualize a film on this topic. The fashion industry has given so little space to these models and as a result people haven’t been introduced to them as equally beautiful, successful and glamorous as models who wear a size zero. What prompted your decision to focus on curvy models Elly Mayday, Laura Wells and Kerosene Deluxe? G: I started working with Elly Mayday on A Perfect 14 before she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. We’ve been following her throughout the entire process of her battle with cancer, all while she’s become a very popular model who is now signed with major modelling agency JAG

What does the term “plus size” mean to you? J: The term “plus size” holds both negative and positive connotations. For some, the term holds an extremely divisive meaning. For a woman who is forced to shop in a special area of every store, separated from the “normal” sizes, the humiliation can be rage-inducing. On the positive end of the spectrum, some models are seeing the plus side of the term by acknowledging that without the special designation, they may not be recognized at all in the modelling industry. By embracing the word “plus”, they set themselves apart

What do you hope audiences will take away from watching your film? G: A Perfect 14 [is meant to] open up a conversation about diversity. We want to remind the world of beauty on a diverse spectrum.

Tell us about yourselves and what inspired you to create this film.

What have been the main obstacles in making this documentary so far? G: The biggest challenge has been trying to understand the discomfort many people still have with body diversity. Even though we mostly get positive feedback, often we get criticism through social media from both sides. One side criticizes us for “glamourizing obesity”, and the other side questions us for not featuring models that are “big enough”. This criticism reassures us on the importance and necessity for this documentary.

What are you hoping to convey with the title A Perfect 14? J: It’s a play off the phrase “A Perfect 10” and the number 14, which is currently the average dress size of women in Canada and the United States. The word “perfect” is also a tongue-incheek reference to portrayal of the idealized “perfect” body image that we are used to seeing on magazine covers and the runway.

ake a mainstream fashion magazine and flip it open to any page. What do you see? Chances are you won’t be looking at a curvy model. Despite the fact that the average North American woman wears a size 14, the fashion industry often neglects to celebrate all body types. In search for answers and in an attempt to show the beauty of diversity, filmmakers James Earl O’Brien and Giovanna Morales have begun filming a barrier-breaking documentary entitled A Perfect 14. After they stopped by the DARE offices to chat with our founder Diana, we decided to ask this dynamic duo a few questions of our own.

Her story is one of overcoming obstacles and is also one of love, as she has an amazing and supportive partner who’s encouraged her to fight for her dreams. With the help of her husband, she’s working towards starting a plus size lingerie line. Laura Wells is an Australian woman who wears many hats. She’s a model, scientist, environmental activist and ambassador for several organizations. Having such an accomplished role model in the film will inspire other women to accomplish their dreams.
