Principal’s Comments Our Prizegiving Ceremonies are a chance to celebrate some of the students successes in a very busy year. We want all of our students to experience success and we want all of our students to achieve to the best of their ability. Sounds simple enough. Then why does it not happen for all our children? There must be a simple explanation; we like simple answers to our challenges. If only; if only we paid teachers better; if only we threw out the naughty kids; if only we went back to a single exam at the end of the year; if only parents taught their kids respect; if only students didn’t have computers and mobile phones; if only we had more funding; if only. We like to simplify things to help with understanding however oversimplifying can mean we look for simple answers where there aren’t any. And there aren’t simple answers because it is not a simple problem. Education is sometimes described using the analogy of a three legged chair with the student seated on top supported by legs representing parents, community, and school. If any one leg is not secure then learning can get wobbly. Whist a useful way to reflect on the importance of these groups working together, in reality education is far more complex than this. We could add extra legs of the stool for business, clubs, churches, central government, MOE, local government, Police, Oranga Tamariki, Ministry of Health, Canterbury District Health Board; all of whom we work with in some way. Education, schools, and learning is complex. We want to develop citizens with skills, and knowledge and wisdom. We want to develop good people. Good friends, good co-workers, good family members, good neighbours. Even something 2
as seemingly simple as raising academic achievement is complex. The effect of an input in one part of the system does not result in a predictable outcome in student achievement. Although we may not have any simple answers, what do we ‘know’ makes a difference. When I say ‘know’ I mean what is there reasonable academic, peer reviewed research to support the idea. This too has its limitations and inconsistencies but it is the best we have. What is it that students can do or have that make a difference? Come to class; take those learning opportunities, they are precious. Not too much part time work; good skills and habits can be learned with part time work but too much of it will often lead to compromises with the time and quality that is put into study. Develop a regular homework habit; less in junior more in senior school. Don’t take drugs or alcohol; there is an enormous amount of change taking place in the developing brain that can be disrupted, sometimes permanently, by drugs including alcohol. Don’t let your developing brain get fried. Find good friends; having people around you who support and care and role model makes a difference. Build respectful relationships with others; parents, teachers, friends – this will set you up for life. Develop impulse control; you may recall the marshmallow test or have heard about delayed gratification. It is the ability to see that putting in the effort now will pay off in the future. It is the essence of study, hard work and savings. Develop resilience and persistence; sticking at things when the going gets hard matters. Develop a ‘growth mind-set’; students who believe that they can learn and change and that failure is OK tend to be more successful at overcoming challenges with learning and life.
What is it that parents do that make a difference? Firstly the basics: food, shelter, love, healthcare, and physical safety. Children need predictability, boundaries and routine. Foster independence – try to avoid being a ‘helicopter parent’. Take great care about swooping in to rescue your children from their challenges. If they have consequences, support them to face up to them. If something is unfair (and teenagers are generally hypersensitive fairness) then support them to find ‘adult’ ways to be heard. Be the role model they need. If you drink to excess then they will see this, if you solve issues with violence or intimidation then they will learn this, if you troll online then they will too. If you are respectful, trustworthy and caring then they will learn this instead. Spend time with them - play together, talk and listen, be involved in their learning. What is it teachers do that makes a difference? It is worth noting that teachers are the most significant in-school influence on student achievement. Supporting them in their work is likely to be the most important thing a school can do to raise achievement. Teacher should: • Have high expectations for their students. • Focus on raising achievement. • Provide quality feedback and next steps to students about their learning. • Be clear about where the learning is going and how students will know they have done a good job. • Develop learning environments that are caring and inclusive. • Put the learning in context – make it relevant and relate it to prior experience. • Provided lots of opportunities to learn. It sounds obvious but the more time spent learning the more is learned. 13 DECEMBER 2019
As we close out the year, I would like to take time to recognise how fortunate we are to be able to count on the number of loyal volunteers who support us throughout the year in a variety of areas across the school. You give freely of your time and skills especially as reader/writers, sports coaches, ski drivers, camp helpers, PTSA catering at events, Rural College supporters (who also provide access to their property and stock), and local businesses who assist with our Year 12 mock interviews. This support is invaluable in enabling us to continue to offer increased opportunities to our growing roll. Please accept this as a personal Thank you! Elaine Guy
Know their subject and know how to best teach their subject. Support positive learning relationships. This is fundamental, but a word of warning, it is a three way deal with students and parents. Positive relationships are built over time with the expectation of respectful interactions as the foundation. We must start off with good behaviour regardless. Occasionally students will blame their disrespectful behaviour on others or something else not being in place. Good behaviour, respectful behaviour must be the starting point from which we can build learning relationships. What is it schools can do? • Hire great staff • Support effective professional learning • Work with staff, students and families to create an orderly and supportive school environment • Set goals and expectations • Effectively plan, coordinate and evaluating the curriculum • Build educationally powerful connection with family

What can the government do that will make a difference to education? • Invest in good teachers, support staff and professional development • Invest in school property and operations • Quality healthcare including mental healthcare • Reduce social inequality and poverty – one of the most reliable indicators of education success is socio-economic status.
As the year draws to a close I want to acknowledge the work of the staff at Darfield High School for their tremendous efforts in providing the highest quality learning opportunities for our children. At times, when the complexities and challenges of our work become a great burden you have put your heart and energy into the work. You have done this for each other and for your students. I humbly thank you for this on their behalf and mine.
As you can see, we do know what makes a difference but how all of these factors interact is highly complex. This doesn’t mean that we don’t strive to do better but it is a shared responsibility. We need to be smart about where we direct our energies.

STAFF FAREWELL I can't believe this week is my last here at Darfield High School. This is my second year here and I have enjoyed every minute. The students have been so awesome, they are open to new ideas, have amazing work ethic and not afraid to ask questions. These are some great skills that will set them up for future successes. I have learnt lots from our students especially being a bit of townie hearing all about their agricultural pursuits has been an eye opener. The staff have been incredibly supportive and make working here a pleasure, always there to answer my million questions and showed great interest in the work I am doing with their students. The collaboration and teamwork is what has created such fabulous outcomes for our students as they go off on apprenticeships, undertake degrees and further training as well as securing jobs. I have learnt so much here and look forward to taking all of that learning onto my new role at Rolleston College which is just a stones throw away from home. CANTERBURY PRIMARY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019 On Wednesday 4 December, a group of Years 7 and 8 students travelled to the Nga Puna Wai Stadium to participate in the Canterbury Primary Schools Athletic Championships. Over 1700 students from North Canterbury, Christchurch, Mid Canterbury and the West Coast competed and a large number of supporters also attended.

We had to wash the tee shirts before we did the tying and dyeing. I did a bullseye method with pink and blue, it turned out good. I followed the steps from the video. I rolled up the tee shirt and putting rubber bands in the spots I wanted circles. The rubber bands and string stopped the dye from going into the next bullseye which made the circle shapes. YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAY
On Thursday 5 December, we welcomed over one hundred and twenty, Year 6 students, from the local Malvern Primary schools. The purpose of this; Transition Day, is to help them familiarise themselves for next year at Darfield High School. The day is organised for the students to learn their way around the school, meet their teachers, future classmates and have a fun day at their new school. We welcome you all and look forward to seeing you at the beginning of 2020, for the start of your journey through Darfield High School.

Year 10 Drama has been busy preparing for their class play Four Funerals and a Wedding, by Marlene F Magee this term. On Friday 6 December they performed their play for an audience of their peers. This was a thrilling experience for the class, and they enjoyed the chance to share their work. The play combines the traditional Shakespearean characters from Romeo & Juliet with the inept detectives and forensic scientists from The X Files, into a comedic parody with a lot of dark humour. Ava de Rooy (Juliet), Charlotte Moana (Friar Laurence) and Anna Smith (Lord Capulet) were called on last minute to stand-in for some roles, and filled these gaps convincingly and with enthusiasm accompanied with superb lighting design and operation by Matt Ashworth, who volunteered to come support the class. A huge thank you to our lovely volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you. My personal highlight of the play was the interrogation of Bianca (May Saussey) by Detective Mouldy (Tierlina Payne), Detective Sculler (Emma Coyle), the terrifying Watchwoman (Emma Wason) and their know-it-all work experience kid, Missy (Sophie Dance). The execution of Benvolio (Izak Derik-Westaway) provided some great comedic moments and the forensic scientists Frank (Molly Mannering) and Stein (Charlotte Roberts) delivery their black comedy with flair. "They all did very well, I didn't see any flaws" - Rozena Sutton.

MUSIC ITINERANT STUDENTS The Annual trip for the music itinerant students, who perform and entertain the residents at Darfield Hospital. This trip gives the students a chance to perform, and for some it is their first experience of performing to an audience. It was a great outing and a wonderful experience for the music pupils and thoroughly enjoyed by the Hospital residences and staff. Congratulations to all those students who took part. Merry Christmas

YEAR 9 SOCIAL STUDIES
DRAGONS' DEN
Thursday 5 December was met with some trepidation for our Year 9 Students, as they were tasked with the job of convincing our scary dragons (Mrs Rangi, Ms Evans & Miss McIntyre) that they had the next million dollar idea.
The students had two weeks in class to come up with a unique product or innovate an existing one. Their pitch needed to include a clear marketing plan with target audience identified, advertisements made, a brand name/logo and a functioning prototype. This year there was a lot of phone case ideas, but also some simple but clever concepts put forward like a toddler seat for a vacuum cleaner, a mouthwash/toothpaste dispensing bottle, a canteen delivery service, double ended sauce bottle and a shampoo hairbrush. It was a very difficult job for the judges to decide on the overall winners.
Bumbler Trolley – This was a canteen trolley that students could download as an app on their phone and preorder food that would be delivered during break times. They had a loyalty programme and a points system for frequent customers. They created a sophisticated prototype and very polished presentation.
The following groups were placed first in class: 9CT: Shampoo Hairbrush Sam McCallion, Jayden Lancaster, Emma Ozanne, Gemma Clucas and Jessica Stewart. 9GT: Toothpaste Dispenser Penny White, Riley HutchinsonSmith, Sahara Hinmann, Fynn Wyatt and Natasha Eastwood. 9MG: Stretch a Case Rhendz Diaz, Alexandra Hool, Kiara Paterson, Charlotte Brett and Phoebe Poultney. 9MR: Twisty Brush Megan Chillingworth, Kirsty McCarthy-Dempsey, Zara McLean, Neve Molloy and Brooke Stevenson. 9RS: Scented Comfort Pillow Molly MacPherson, Blake McInerney, Paige Strode-Penny and Jessie Stead.
Charger-Go - This group had a great 3D printed phone case with space for a portable phone charger to sit behind the phone so they could charge on the go. They also had the option of customers choosing their own design to be printed on the back of the case. Gomu Pen – This was a simple but effective idea of combining a twink pottle at the end of a pen that screwed open like a nail polish container so you always had twink at hand. The group had produced a good working prototype. A huge thank you to our expert judges Mrs Rangi, Miss McIntyre and Ms Evans and also all the hard work from our Year 9 Social Studies teachers helping prepare the students for their presentations. LEARNING
Over the last few weeks we have been lucky enough to try out some new things. First we tried out rākau with Mrs Willard. Rākau is a Māori game using two sticks. We had noisy fun following each others patterns. Next, Mr Teasdale taught us the chords on the ukulele for Summer Wonderland. We surprised ourselves with how well we strummed together. We performed it at our Learning Centre Prize giving. We were really pleased with how it came together. Then we met with Mrs Hayakawa in the Japanese room. Kailash said, “I learned to make a trick sailboat.” We also folded a shape that made a cat on one side and a dog on the other. “Origami is folding shapes out of paper,” said Crystal. After that we became scientists. We put on lab coats and safety glasses. Mr Scott had lots of experiments set up for us. “My favourite one was when the clear liquid changed colours,” said Asia. Crystal enjoyed watching the volcanoes turning pink and erupting. Lucas was amazed when Mr Scott heated magnesium over a hot blue flame and it went a really bright white! Then we visited the gym with Ms Beatson and we played balloon games including Rob the Nest. Angie loved stealing the balloon eggs. We hit balloons with badminton racquets up into the air. We danced to Christmas music including our song Summer Wonderland where we all sang along. We felt happy and tired afterwards. We went rock climbing in Gym 2 with Ms Kelly, Miss Symons, and Ms Walker. We had to put on a harness which was attached to ropes. This made us feel safer. We were a bit nervous and scared but we were soon stretching and reaching our way up the wall. We loved it so much we didn’t want to stop. Nathan said “I climbed as high as I could.” Our last activity with the senior teachers will be Art with Mrs Carey and Mrs Hinton. We are looking forward to finding out what they have in store for us. Thank you to all the senior teachers involved in teaching us new things and for giving up their time. We think you are all awesome! We hope this will become a yearly event. THE GREAT DARFIELD BURGER COMPETITION
On Friday 6 December, the second ‘Great Darfield Burger Competition’ was held for the year. The competition is the culmination of a term’s work for our Year 10 Food and Nutrition class. Over the course of the term the students experiment with different herbs, spices, seasonings and cooking methods to create their own unique burger recipe. They take into consideration the recommended daily servings and respond to feedback and tastings. This winner of the competition was; Emma Miles with her ‘Classic Italian Burger’; featuring a pesto infused burger and the colours of the Italian flag. Second place was awarded to two teams; Kathy Muckle, Morgan Whitehouse and Leah Keating who made a lamb burger, served on focaccia bread and tzatziki sauce. Peter Bourgeois-Curd and Hayden de Burger created ‘Papa Herb’ showcasing fresh herbs grown in the school grounds. The overall standard of all of the burgers was most impressive and it was a real pleasure to see our students cooking with such refined skills. Last week a group of Year 11 students, went through training to become 2020 Peer Support Leaders with Mrs Cartman and Mrs Gallacher. Peer Support Leaders run games and activities based on a theme and are role models for Year 7 students. We will work with a Year 7 class during the first term and help them transition so they will get used to their new environment and give them skills that will help support them throughout their time at school.
During training, we were taught games that we will play with the Year 7s, as well as learning the message of these games. For example, we learnt how to teach communication skills by playing a game, where one member was blindfolded and that member had to wrap a person in toilet paper, but one person was to direct the blindfolded person. The best team wins by having the person who has been most wrapped.

MY TECH EXHIBITION
For the second year a different subject is happening at school, MyTechnology. It is a subject for projects by Year 10 students, whose progress was assessed by teachers (and self) as they finished their creations. The subject started in Term 3 and, throughout the two terms, students worked on their projects and filled their portfolios. There were many impressive creations. For example, some people chose to make storage units, swinging seats, toboggan and even a guitar. I am astonished by what some people have created this year and, on Tuesday 10 December, we displayed the projects in the DVC room for all the staff to see.

21 Year 10 Students spent the morning at the University of Canterbury, running around and having fun at the UC's Annual Amazing Race. We were joined by four other schools and everyone was in teams of four or five.
AMAZING RACE
The race was on for the fastest team to complete all the challenges and make it back to the Engineering building. This meant completing the task set and then solving a clue to be able to work out where on campus the next task would be. This included activities like selling a Milky Way bar to a Commerce tutor, making as many sentences as you can out of a pile of random words and moulding chocolate. It was a really fun day where everyone was smiling and supporting each other in their teams. One of the Darfield teams came second! It was a fantastic opportunity to see what a University campus looks like and the different departments representing a range of different areas of study, thanks to UC for hosting us. Mrs Jo Ager
COMMERCE BUSINESS CHALLENGE Four Year 10 students, who have taken Commerce this year, were given the opportunity to go to the University of Canterbury to take part in a quiz involving a range of topics including; Accounting, Logos and Economics. Hannah Hunter, Jasmine Inch, Peter Bourgeois and Belinda Inch were the four students who took part, their team placed third. We all thought it was really fun and would highly recommend doing the quiz if you get the opportunity next year. Belinda Inch On Monday my team and I went to the University of Canterbury to complete in a range of challenges based on what we have been learning in Commerce this year. It was run like Canta Maths and we all had heaps of fun competing in the challenge. We would run up to the front to check off our question. If we got it we would run back around with a new question or have to try again to get the correct answers. There was a genre of questions from Logos, Business Studies and Economics. There were around 60 questions. In this race our team was placed third. We all had heaps of fun during the quiz. We would encourage you to take part if opportunity is given to you. INTERNATIONAL END OF YEAR PARTY A few weeks ago we held our end of year party for all of our international students and their host families. It was wonderful to gather together and look back on another successful year for our programme. Rira Takahashi put together a video showcasing photos from throughout the year, and also performed a musical

piece along with Aiko Sakurai and Kanon Oka. It is always very sad to say goodbye to students, but we are proud that this year we have some heading off to tertiary study in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. They all gave great speeches, but there certainly were some tears too! We would like to once again thank all
of our host families for being part of our programme as well as DHS domestic students, staff and wider community for welcoming them to Darfield. Ms Hely

Parking Outside the School Outside the school on McLaughlins Road, is a no stopping zone. We need parents to observe the ‘No Parking or Stopping Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside residents' driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated car parks and not in front of residents’ driveways. The car parks outside the school hall are reserved for staff and visitors coming into the school. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road, or south-west on McLaughlins Road.

This is the fifth year we have offered summer study, which has grown in popularity every year. More than 1500 students took advantage of Summer School last year to top up their NCEA credits, enabling them to go on to either further study, training or employment.
Courses are delivered online so with access to a computer and the internet, students can learn anywhere and anytime.

Zonta Award Though about 40 percent of the world’s workforce is women, according to data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, only 24.5 percent of all national parliamentarians were female as of 1 September 2019. Because Zonta International believes that young women are the key to women’s advancement in the field of public service, it offers the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award, which recognizes young women, ages 16-19, for demonstrating leadership skills and commitment to public service and civic causes, and encourages them to continue their participation in public and political life. Parenting Place’s Attitude team is excited to bring you Tī Kōuka - the ultimate parent-child adventure camp. Most of us don’t look forward to talking about self-esteem, technology, drugs, alcohol or puberty with our kids. We know it’s really important, but it’s difficult to find the right moment, or even know where to start. Tī Kōuka is for intermediate aged children, accompanied by a parent/grandparent/ caregiver/special big person in their life.
