Big Day Out A fun-filled day at Hanmer Springs was the reward for a group of students selected by ballot from the many who have met school expectations throughout the year.
Departing at 8.00 am on 29 November was a bus-load of sleepy, quiet students. This quickly changed with the challenge of Alpine Crazy Putt, which saw many a golf ball find its way ricocheting off the course onto the grass. Laughter and, at times, frustration aside, everyone had built up a good appetite for lunch at The Log Cabin. Then it was time to relax in the hot pools and the students really appreciated being able to pop between the pools, which ranged in temperature from 28 to 40 C! And what better way to finish such a great day than an ice-cream before the bus ride home? The bus was alive with the lovely chatter of students sharing their stories from the day. Not only were the students fantastic role models for the school, but the accompanying teachers were great fun, too. A big thank you to Senior Management for organising such a successful day; also many thanks to bus driver Rod who kept the front of the bus entertained with his many hilarious stories. Penny Munro

Principal’s Comments It has been pleasing to have been presenting a large number of Principal’s Awards at assemblies recently. These awards are presented to students who have achieved five Dean’s Awards and reflect students who have been consistently meeting our school expectations over a long period of time. The most important resource in supporting student success at school is our staff. At the end of this year, we farewell from the school several teachers who have been on fixed term contracts due to maternity leave, roll growth, and staff changes during the year. Jan Stark who is moving to be Head of English at Golden Bay High School. Ms Stark has been teaching English at DHS for five years. Most recently, her work has included cross school literacy leader and Specialist Classroom Teacher. She has also made a big contribution as a teacher rep on the PTSA.
Charlotte Walker, the Dean of the current Year 11 cohort and also Assistant Head of Maths is taking a year's refreshment leave after six years of service at the school. Graham Fee retires this year after 15 years at the school. Mr Fee was on leave in 2016; however, many students will have had Mr Fee as a teacher in Year 8. He is a highly respected teacher who has made a significant contribution. We wish him well. Each year has its share of successes and challenges. Thank you to all of our staff for their hard work, their patience and their focus on the learning and achievement of the students at Darfield High School Finally, for those of you leaving DHS at the end of this year, I hope you feel that you have had good value from your education here and that you look back with pride and fondness, and remember that we will always be your secondary school.

Senior Sign Out Day On Thursday 1 December, seniors, relieved their exams were over, arrived back at school for the last time this year, to sign out, collect their yearbooks, say their goodbyes and have morning tea with the staff. James Morris wished them all well for their future ventures and study, and reminded them that, as ex-students, they would always be welcomed back at the school. Students had one more school event to attend— Senior Prize Giving—before they were finished for the holidays.

It was great to see all the Year 6s from our contributing schools arrive for their orientation day last week. At first, they gathered in their own school groups but it wasn't long before they had been welcomed and sent off to various activities planned for them. This day is organised so they can learn their way around the school and meet new friends, future classmates and next year's teachers. The senior Peer Support group were there to look after them too and we look forward to seeing everyone at the start of 2017.
Peer Support Training Recently, Year 11 students attended a Peer Support Training Day. Those chosen to be Supporters next year attended the programme. The Peer Support Programme offers secondary schools the opportunity to provide new entrants a structured introduction to school under the guidance of senior students who are trained as leaders.

Mr Scrooge A Christmas Pantomime by Peter Bond

Last week, junior Drama students put on a fabulous pantomime, Mr Scrooge, for the local primary schools, with two matinees and an evening performance. The show was totally student directed. Director, Jasmine Nash, did a superb job and the cast and crew delivered a very strong and entertaining show. Oscar Gosling, as Sherlock Holmes, wowed the audience with his singing and acting and Kieran McKay was a very convincing Mr Scrooge. There was a gorgeous performance by Kate Morris as the love-struck Agnes, and James Stead brought a great sense of comedy to his role as the Ghost of Christmas Past. The traditional Christmas songs were delivered beautifully by some wonderful soloists and a lovely Chorus who hit all the right notes. The visiting primary students were encouraged to participate and loved the interactions, especially yelling "Humbug!" as they were often asked what Mr Scrooge thought of Christmas. A delightful, Christmassy end to the school year!

On Monday 12 December, 7LW had a shared lunch and pool party to celebrate the year's successes and to farewell Mrs Walker. The rain and 6 degrees did not deter the students from having a great splash in the outdoor pool. Now and then they hopped into the indoor pool to warm up and there was plenty of yummy food.

During Term 4, 7LW students wrote creative stories for reading to primary students. On Friday 9 December, the students went to Darfield Primary to read the books they created to the junior students. A lot of fun was had by both 7LW and junior children. Mrs Walker was very proud of their efforts, stories, and behaviour while away from school.

The Science Roadshow The Science Roadshow visited school recently, providing students an opportunity to explore various science and technology concepts by ‘touch and feel’. Below are students investigating all the different workstations.

Learning about Pest Control On Friday 18 November, Miss Hobson and Mrs Rangi's Social Studies classes went to Victoria Park in the Port Hills on a pest control trip where we studied pest tracks and what they did to native flora and fauna (native plants and animals).
Year7 Wearable Arts
We were split into two groups—while one went to go and study pests, the other was to do orienteering. Most of us go lost scaling rocky ledges in search of adventure. At lunch, we played ball games before we swapped activities. In the second activity, we learnt about the vegetation that is on the Port Hills. We also learnt what some type of pest tracks looked like, as well as their faeces. The rangers showed us the different trapping methods that they use in the Port Hills. Overall, it was a great day and if I had the chance, I would do it again. Sarah Gerritsen

On 23 November, 24 students and seven adults began the treacherous journey around Mt Somers. We all arrived at school, buzzing with energy and excited for the days that lay ahead. We had our gear checked again and packed in the last few essentials we’d need for the next few days. Once everything was sorted, we loaded up the bus and started to make our way to the Mt Somers carpark. Originally, the plan was to walk to Woolshed Creek Hut for the first night and then onto Pinnacles Hut for the second night, however, this was changed due to another group who would be completing the tramp. So it was decided we would head to Pinnacles Hut then to Woolshed Creek Hut for our tramp. Maps were distributed among us and we quickly set off on our journey in the heat of the day. With time going by, our packs rapidly felt heavier, but we were far from the hut. As the sun started to cool off, we were nearly

there. We found Mr Dickens standing on a rock as we came to the top of a hill; he gave us the good news that the hut was just 10 minutes away—but what a long 10 minutes it was. Reaching the hut was a relief—our first day of tramping was over. We all found a campsite and began cooking our meals. We were responsible for cooking our own dinner which was to be judged in the Mt Somers Master Chef competition. We were to be judged on the taste, presentation, and the story behind our meal. It was mandatory to have at least two veggies and there was to be no dehydrated food. The winners of this competition were Nicole Grigg, Brooke Robinson, Brooke Steele and Georgia Allison. After this, we debriefed our first very demanding day and then tucked into our little tents for the night. The next morning, we awoke to find that there was still no view to admire due to the
thick cloud covering the mountains around us. At about 9 o'clock, the first group was released to begin the next stage of their journey, to Woolshed Creek Hut. The first part of this journey was to climb a steep ridge line to a saddle. We then began to learn some new navigational skills and took a different path off the track to Morgan Stream. With our heavy packs on our backs, we made our way down the steep, rocky, scree slope to the stream. We were instructed to be careful where we stood as the fog was so thick that you could hardly make out the bottom of the slope. After reaching the bottom, we split into groups to make our way along the creek to the hut. We continued to make our way to the hut which brought us to some caves. We crawled through the cave and then a brave group of students decided to swim in the cold, refreshing water. The remaining students then proceeded to make the last stretch to the hut.

Mt Somers Tramp (cont) On arrival, we found that it was a really big hut with lots of room for trampers. Unfortunately for us, we’d all have to have another enjoyable experience of being in tents for another night as we weren’t allowed to sleep inside. Reluctantly, we set up our wet tents from the night before and were given food to cook for dinner. Towards the end of the night, two French trampers arrived at the hut. We all got a chance to talk to the trampers and I got to speak some French to them. As night set in, we played a bunch of games before tucking in to our tents for the second night. During the night, the wind picked up which was a great reminder of how uncomfortable we all were being crammed into a small space among other students. Waking up on the final day, everyone was full of mixed emotions—either happy to be leaving because they needed a shower, or excited for the day that lay ahead. We were briefed that on our final day one group would be taking the bus stop route to the car park and the other group would be taking a route through an old mine. The first group left at about 9.00 am, while the other group stayed and tidied up the hut for the next trampers. At about 9.45 am, the second group set off.

As we began climbing the first hill, we could vaguely make out small moving dots along the summit beside us—it was the bus stop group. Reaching the top was a relief. Fortyfive minutes of solid uphill was challenging, especially with the sun beginning to get hot. We then started making our way down the hill in the direction of the mine. We had lost sight of the bus stop group at this point so we assumed they had begun their monstrous descent down the hill towards the car park. The mine was a lot smaller than we'd first thought, but it was fascinating to see what one had looked like many years ago. We had a brief stop and we met up with a smaller group which departed at the same time as the bus stop group. We all made the final 40-minute walk down to the car park. The full force of the sun's heat had hit us by that point. Our feet were sore and our packs felt very heavy but, after three hours, we reached the car park. We went down to the river, which was near the car park, for a quick dip to refresh ourselves while we waited for the final group to arrive. Once they'd arrived, we sorted out our gear into piles of what was essential that we needed, essential but we didn't use, and then just the gear that we took but wasn't essential
and we didn't use. It was interesting to see how a lot of the things that we thought we would need, we didn't end up using. Finally, we sat down and did a debrief of what was good and bad about the past few days. We had all previously set a goal that we wanted to achieve on the tramp, and we were all really happy to report our success in reaching our goals. We loaded our gear onto the bus and began the trip back to Darfield. We made a quick stop to get an ice cream which was nice after the challenging days we had had. At this stage, we were all ready to get home for a shower. After arriving at school, we cleared everything off the bus and said our final thank yous to all the teachers and parents who had accompanied us over the past few days, and then made our way home. On behalf of the Year 10 trampers of 2016, I'd like to say a huge thank you to Mr Dickens and all the teachers for organising the tramp, the parents who came with us, and also to Jules and Michael, from Outdoor Education New Zealand, for coming with us for the three days. We all learnt so much and had an amazing experience that I'm sure we will remember for many years to come.

Surfing at Spencer Park
Adrenaline Forest On Thursday 24 November, some of the kids in Year 10 went to Adrenaline Forest in Woodend. The bus was very full as we headed off. When we arrived, we were given a tour of where everything was and were geared up with gloves and harnesses and taken over by the instructors to an area where they taught us how to use our carabiners and hooks. When we were ready, we had to start on Levels One, Two or Three, and Three was
14
so high. Most people started on One or Two. As we passed each level, they got harder and higher; some even started to use their carabiner to pull themselves across the obstacle. A few of us even got stuck and had to have the Adrenaline Forest team get us down or untangle us. Most people got to do all of the levels that they wanted to do, so it was a good day overall and everyone enjoyed themselves. Aleisha Knowles

Hannah and Pearl's Success at the A&P Area Day On the day, it was very wet so we were pleased the big tents were still up from the Canterbury A and P Show and we paraded our animals in the members' tent! Students come from all over Canterbury with their pets; it is like zones for sports! Animals include dairy and beef calves, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry. This is my last year I can attend this event as you can compete only up until Year 8.

On Thursday 17 November 2016, I attended the Canterbury A and P Boys and Girls Agriculture Club Area Day at the Canterbury Show Grounds with my calf, Springoak Beemer Pearl, but Pearl for short! This year, my calf was a little different. I was lucky enough to have a friend’s (who lives in Melbourne) calf and she is an ET (Embryo Transplant) calf. Pearl arrived at our farm at only one day old with four others; she is a Holstein Friesian.
We were judged on four sections: Care and Attention, Leading and Handling, Type, and Project Book. In the project book, we write a diary about our animals from the very beginning of their lives, details on what we feed them, animal health information, and a little bit about ourselves. Competition is always very tough; I was placed 1st in Project Book, 2nd in Care and Attention, and Dairy Type, 3rd in Leading and Handling and then Pearl and I got Reserve Champion. It is a great opportunity to show off the hard work we have put into our pets over many months. Hannah King
Canterbury Primary Schools Athletic Championships On Wednesday 7 December, a number of Years 7 and 8 students, Miss Hobson, and I travelled down to Ashburton for students to compete in the above championships. Due a lack of a suitable venue in Christchurch, for the past few years this event has been held in Ashburton Domain in the Ashburton Botanical Gardens. It is a lovely venue surrounded by trees and shrubs. The weather this year was a lot cooler than in previous years but at least it did not rain! The competition is very strong, with students from North Canterbury, the West Coast, Canterbury, and Mid Canterbury, all participating to be the champion in a number of different events. This year, the students from Darfield High School, after winning their events at the Malvern Athletics, can all be justifiably proud of their efforts. As I was organising one of the Shot Put events for the day, I was not able to
watch all of our athletes, but I have been told we had some pleasing results, especially in the events on the track. Congratulations to: William Brown (8SJ) who finished 3rd in the 100 metre 13 year old boys Lucas de Burger (8GA) who won the Discus, second in Shot Put, second in the 80 metres and was third in the 50 metre race in Athletes with Disability events. Well done to you both—we are all proud of your efforts! A big thank you to Miss Hobson for supervising our students and to the parents/ caregivers who helped with transport. Careers It is very normal for teenagers to not know what they want to do when they leave school. The more they know about themselves (likes, interests, personality, skills) and the world of work the better able they will be to find a career pathway that best suits them.
Te Hoe Maori Language Course During Term Three, staff attended a Te Reo course, held here after school hours by the Ara Institute of Canterbury. to further understand basic tikanga Maori, pronounce the language with confidence, and to participate in karakia, himine and waiata.

The following items have been discounted for sale from the DHS Uniform Shop. Stock for sale is in particular sizes as detailed below. Other items are available at the regular price. Uniform Reminders:
Ties: During the winter terms, Terms 2 and 3, students are required to wear a school tie with their uniform. These are available from both Darfield High School and The Warehouse. Sports Socks: If your student is playing a winter sport in the following codes, they will need a pair of Darfield High School socks: Rugby and Hockey. These are available from the school office only. Hats: Students are permitted to wear a plain navy beanie or the DHS beanie with crest. This is for outdoor wear only. Jackets for cooler weather: Students are permitted to wear either a plain navy or plain black jacket with their uniform to keep warm on cooler days. Jackets and DHS scarves are for outdoor wear. Socks: Ensure that your child is wearing the correct socks to school. For both girls and boys, knee-high black socks are required.
Lost Property: Many uniform items have been found around the school. Please name all items of your student's clothing and check that they have not lost anything. Lost Property will now be stored in the Uniform Shop. Students can access it by seeing Sue at the office or by visiting the shop when it is open.

If you attended West Melton Full Primary School for at least two years and are Enrolling in 2017 for the last year of a degree programme at a tertiary institution you can apply as soon as you have the results for this year.
The Scholarship is worth $1,750 payable at the start of the 2017 academic year. 2017 Year 8 School Based HPV Vaccination Programme Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection which can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts and other types of cancers later in life. Early HPV immunisation offers the best protection against contracting these diseases. Starting 2017, both girls and boys in Year 8 will be offered free HPV Vaccination through the school based programme. A new updated version of the vaccine (Gardasil 9) will cover more strains of the virus, providing cover with 2 doses rather than 3 with Gardasil 4. The vaccination will continue to be available within the GP Practices, however, we encourage you to participate in the school based programme. Girls and boys who have partially started the process with their GP will have the option to complete the course through the school based programme. To enable students to receive the vaccination at school, parents will need to complete the consent form which will be sent home with the student along with supporting information during the first weeks of term one. Please check with your child or the school to ensure you receive the consent form and information pack.
