Principal’s Comments Congratulations to everybody on our move to Level 1, as we recognize the efforts and sacrifices that have been made to get here. We are good with dealing with a crisis and working together in our time of need. We now move into what can be a very challenging time; post crisis, the adrenaline is gone and now the negative effects and stress of the lockdown will start to bite for some. Now is the time to keep our focus on being kind and looking after each other. The key points of our ongoing safety plan are: • Stay home if sick. • Use good hygiene practices (keep handwashing and sanitising). • Visitors sign in and use the COVID 19 tracker app.

Assemblies will resume and we are starting up our sports and cultural events where possible. We were pleased to see the announcement of a number of changes to NCEA to recognize the disruption of lockdown. The main changes include starting exams later and reducing the number of credits required to attain certificates and University Entrance. Full details will be sent to senior students.

including parents, community groups and contributing schools. On page four of this newsletter, we have shared our aims and process for this review. In the next few weeks we will be contacting you to invite you to share your vision for Darfield High School. James Morris

Our return from lockdown has meant that the school has been able to launch into our planned school review to consider our desired future for Darfield High School and to plan how we will get there. We are excited about this and keen to get feedback from all stakeholders

Student Successes Nathan's Big Challenge Nathan ran and walked the Rapaki track on Saturday 23 May, from sunrise to sunset to raise money for Learn Active. With the support of family and friends Nathan achieved his goal and raised $1,380.00 for Learn Active. Congratulations, Nathan!

Nathan and his Mum, Bridget Carter

Throughout Covid 19 Alert levels Nathan has been running or walking in his home town to help cope with the massive amounts of change and uncertainty, something he really struggles with being on the Autism spectrum. Nathan also loves going to school and has missed being at school for the last 8 weeks (including school holidays). Although he has done many things at home to cope with the multiple changes, running/ walking has been the main source of reducing stress and anxiety. There is a lot of research that exercise can reduce stress. It certainly has helped Nathan. Everything has changed, all activities either cancelled, postponed, or delivered differently. Nathan has had to adapt everything except his running/walking, he still has his block to run and in Alert Level 3 he was so delighted to run his favourite run Rapaki track in Christchurch. He is always enthusiastic about going for a run or walk, you can see it all over his face. He’s always smiling and full of enthusiasm and has coped incredibly well with the multiple changes over the last few weeks, something his family are really proud of. Lockdown in Selwyn Competition

Elisha's Lockdown Winning Entry My name is Elisha Hill. I'm twelve years old and live in West Melton. I love swimming and competing in events. I also like hanging out with my friends on Facetime, which I've had to do during lockdown and can't wait to get back to school and see them in person! This poster shows what I have experienced in lockdown as well as a range of activities I have perfected. At the end of each option rotation the Te Reo MÄ ori classes spend the day learning some weaving techniques. Year 7-9 created harakeke ika (fish) and putiputi (flowers). Year 10 had previously created ika and putiputi so they were set the challenge to weave a kono (four cornered basket). This required the preparation of the harakeke the previous lesson and then weaving 16 whenu for the bottom before tackling the tricky corners. They all did an amazing job and with further practice will improve these skills. We have still got one session to go in order to complete their kono. Louise Blakemore Te Reo MÄ ori Teacher

Friday Afternoon

FUN Ms Thorne and I were walking between classes for some fresh air when we ran into Ms Whyte with her Puppy, Tilly. I asked if we could play with her and she said yes. We went to the field and I let her off the lead. I ran with her and threw her rope toy for her. Tilly was excited and raced around. She did a poop but luckily Ms Whyte picked it up. Tilly wouldn’t stop picking up rubbish so I took it out of her mouth. We took her for a walk around the big field. A big dog tried to chase her and it was barking. It was over the other side of the fence and I was worried it would jump over the fence and grab Tilly. Tilly was tired so Ms Thorne and I took her back to AE and gave her fresh water and food. She went to sleep on the floor and then I had to pick her up and carry her back to Ms Whyte.

Tilly is…… Tilly is a black Labrador She is 3 months old and a girl She is cute, soft and baggy She is clumsy and has lots of energy She has a matching collar and lead She trips over her paws and herself She is attached to Ms Whyte Tilly's ears change direction when she's happy or not sure

It was one of the best periods I have ever had. I feel really lucky I got to look after Tilly by myself. No other student got to do that. See you again Tilly! Billy Norton

Sponsorship helping our Rural College Students

Rural College students eager to try out the new Quad bike (Left to Right): Cam O'Donnell, Ben Francis, George McIntosh, Caleb Curtin (on bike), Scott McKay and Josh May.

Darfield High School's Rural College Department have a new Can-Am Outlander 450 Quad Bike. This bike is very popular and used on a lot of farms in the area. We listened to the farmers who wanted the students skilled and able to ride a bigger bike like the ones that they use on their farms. Rex Smith and Maria Townsend would like to acknowledge and thank the tremendous support and sponsorship from: Ian Cowan - Can-Am North Canterbury. Kathryn Jack and Steff St ClairNewman - Grasslands and Colin Glass - Dairy Holdings. Their sponsorship has allowed Darfield High School Rural College to purchase the quad bike. It is fitted with the safety feature the “lifeguard roll bar and has a speed safety switch on it. Students will be trained in all facets of safe Quad Bike riding up to the standards required in the Agricultural Industry.

ONUKU MARAE During Term 1, the Year 10's were fortunate enough to visit Onuku Marae for an overnight noho, which is located on the edge of the spectacular Akaroa Harbour. During this camp we learnt about our Maori ancestry and did lots of exciting activities. We had an amazing time weaving flax, learning Te Rakau (which was quite entertaining to watch) and even launching a Waka and paddling down Opara Stream at Okains Bay! One of the highlights for me was the Waka. It was a really pleasant experience, even though my arms felt like they were going to fall off afterwards. We visited a beach that had hundreds of crabs under the rocks and some people even swam in the water. The food was delicious- we had spring rolls and battered fish and salads, and apple crumble for dessert! We heard lots of interesting stories about our Maori history and got to play spotlight when it was dark. Overall, we had a really great time. I would definitely encourage the Year 10's next year to go on the trip, it is definitely worth it. I would to thank the facilitators who shared their skills and knowledge with us: Ngaio Tuari - Harakeke Weaver. Michelle and Adrian Broadman - Ti Rakau coach and Harakeke Weaver. Iaean Cranwell and Brian Parker Waka Captains. Onuku Marae for making us feel so welcome. Finally to Mr Maude, Ms Blakemore, Miss McIntyre, Miss Tregear and Mrs Lee, for giving up their time and organising such an awesome camp. Holly Borham

LIFE EDUCATION With

Harold

Life Education started its program at DHS last week. Today children and adolescents face a lot of challenges, including: obesity, substance use, mental health, well-being and bullying. The decisions we make as children can dramatically affect how we live our lives in the future – this is why Life Education exists. Through education helping students to understand how decisions they make today can affect their future health and well-being. This week Year 7s and the Learning Centre visited the bus. This years focus was chosen, due to the time our students have spent online, in the last while. Why is it important to think about how we interact with others online? Students explore how communicating with others online effects and shapes our relationships. How is it similar to face to face communication? How is it different? How do the choices I make online affect me and others? Our online behaviour affects others as well as ourselves. How can we make good choices in a digital environment? What differences are there between our behaviour in a digital environment compared to a physical one? What does Digital Citizenship mean to me? What is Digital Citizenship? How do we define it, and how does it apply to us in today's society? Where can I go for help? Our students always enjoy their visits to the Bus and Harold. This is a great opportunity to ask you child what they have been learning about. Below is also the site for other information that you may want to explore with them. https://www.lifeeducation.org.nz/in-schools/resources 22

The Cancer Society's new initiative to reduce the use of plastic bags and move to recyclable paper for the Oncology Department has opened up a great opportunity to send some love and positivity for patients who are undergoing treatment. The idea was to decorate these plain paper bags with a variety of colour, art and positivity. This way when patients are undergoing radiation treatment they are welcomed with a beautiful bag that they are able to put their personal belongings in. The Well-being committee thought it would be a great opportunity to get our new Year 7 students involved, and fortunately they took the opportunity with no hesitation. It was such a rewarding experience to witness our new students getting involved and putting a lot of care and love into this great opportunity. We hope that we managed to put a smile onto some faces and were able to add a little brightness into their day. Ella Roessink Head of Well-being
