Principal’s Comments The leadership team has been busy working to gather feedback as part of our strategic ‘vision’ for the school. BOT, students, teachers and community groups have been involved in feedback sessions as part of steps 1 -3 of our process (below). Parents will be able to be involved at sessions on 20 August at 9 am or 26 August at 6.30 pm. These sessions will be facilitated by Greg Jansen and invitations will be sent out next week. In addition all parents will have the opportunity to contribute by electronic survey following these sessions. We will be collating feedback from these sessions and bringing this back to groups as we develop a vision and strategic plan. At the community meeting we held last term, we developed an action plan to respond to feedback received. Recent actions linked
to this include regular meetings with Police; regular posts through the school Facebook page sharing student success; parent involvement in strategic planning; an evening is being arranged for parents regarding student cybersafety; and teachers working together to develop greater clarity and consistency with the school’s behaviour management system. Keep It Real Online https://www. keepitrealonline.govt.nz/ is a website that provides valuable advice for parents. This includes information on how to support your child if they are affected by online bullying; how to talk to your child about pornography; and protection from online grooming. I recommend that all parents have a look at the site if their child is active online – which is probably all of us.
Open Evening The recent Open Evening was a big success with over 350 people attending. The evening started with a welcome and introductions from our BOT Chairperson, Sue Robinson, and Principal, James Morris. Amy Armstrong, a current Year 7 student, spoke fondly about her experiences so far. Head students, Rozlyn Doherty and Harry Williamson, encouraged those new students to make the most of every opportunity; there will be lots that come their way, and their time at DHS will fly by. Student Leaders did a wonderful job leading the groups around the different classrooms, introducing each group to the teacher in charge, who was there to answer any questions and show off students' work. The visitors got to watch demonstrations and explore some hands-on activities in some of the classrooms. Thank you to all those who attended and to the wonderful PTSA who provided supper.
James Morris Congratulations to the winners of the Open Evening Treasure Hunt: Martha Richards Eisenburg Sabas Samara Dunlop
Keeping Your Family Safe Online A big thank you to the Year 11 Food and Nutrition students who made 14 dozen chocolate chip and caramel biscuits for Open Evening. Not a burnt biscuit in sight!

Student Successes Celebrating the successes of our students is important. There are a number of areas that students excel in. Whether this is part of or outside of the DHS community, please feel free to let us know, so we can celebrate their achievements with the whole community. Over the recent school holidays, a group of Year 13 students from the Wellbeing Committee devoted their time and effort into painting some of the school toilet blocks. This idea was raised by the 2019 Well-being Committee and I was lucky enough to make it happen. Unfortunately for some students, these bathrooms are a place to hide when they are feeling down. We are hoping that these paintings will help brighten someone's day and bring more positivity into the toilets. Ella Roessink Head of Well-being
Former Students of Darfield High School graduated from Victoria University of Wellington The following former DHS pupils have graduated from Victoria University between June 2019 and May 2020. We, at Victoria University join with you in acknowledging and celebrating the students’ wonderful success. 2020 has turned out to be a challenging year for all of us. Due to lockdown we were unable to hold our usual graduation ceremonies in May. However, all those due to graduate at that time had their degrees conferred in absentia. Happily, we have been able to reschedule ceremonies and those who wish to will be able to walk across the stage in September. First Name Alexis Calum James Sarah

LEADERSHIP SPEAKERS
The Year 7 students are studying leadership this term. Each week we are having a guest speaker speaking about leadership in their lives. So far we have been fortunate to listen to Daryl Collier (Darfield Bakery) and Jezza Williams (Making Trax).
Daryl Collier from Darfield Bakery came and talked about leadership throughout his life and being a leader in business.
Jezza Williams from Making Trax talked to the Year 7s as part of our leadership topic. Jezza was in a canyoning accident 10 years ago and is now a tetraplegic. He created his non-profit organisation to help businesses adapt for people with disabilities. You are what you experience in life; the more people you meet, you realise everyone has different diversity, culture, religion, wealth. If you live in one moment for all your life, you will not understand. Experience is wealth; you are your experience. Jezza said that he would never turn back time and change it. If things are hard on us in life, we need to look at this as a challenge and this will challenge us. "If you want my advice, the more skills and people you know and experience, when things change you will have more tools to cope and adapt." The more effort you put in, the more you get out of it. Prepare yourself for challenges; if things happen it is only a small hiccup. Thank you, Jezza, for your time and sharing your experiences with us.
On Monday 27 July, a group of Year 9 students came into my class to play "bullying" snakes and ladders that they had created as part of their Health class with Miss Reardon. They were looking at how to prevent bullying and where to go for help. Camille Cartman

Children of the Poor
The Level 3 Drama class performed their class production, Mervyn Thompsons' Children of the Poor to an invited audience on Friday 24 July, as part of their NCEA assessment. The story follows a young Albany Porcello (played expertly by Emily McCallum) as he desperately attempts to escape his miserable, poverty-stricken existence. Along with his sister Rose (Aimee Fleet), Albany tries to provide for an everstruggling and marginalised family (Isabel Simcox and Bena Pearson), only to end up where he was destined to be, in jail. The other characters serve as a contrast to the poor Porcello family, representing the wealthy and educated, played by a fantastic chorus who undertook multiple roles: Matthew Young, Jess Galletly, Ana Savanovic, Cameron Mills, Jordan Rugg, James Stead and Cameron Murdoch. The theory behind the performance style of "Epic Theatre" (a branch of Political theatre) is to present societal issues in a jarring and alienating way. By mixing grim reality with ironic and comedic disruptions, the audience are prevented from the "suspension of disbelief", encouraging them to reflect, discuss and confront the problems that nearly 100 years later are still prevalent. The class performed beautifully, and were accompanied by Level 2 Drama students Micah Innes (Lighting) and Matt Ashworth (Sound). Mrs Hanson

‘Clean Dishes, Cleaner Future’ with SUDmerge
Rebecca, Sophie, Jess and Emily with their new product
SUDmerge
We are a group of Year 13 Business Studies students who are working as a part of The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme to create a cleaner future. This is a programme that allows students to set up and run their own business and make it available to the market. Our product will be launched late August and we aim to have this available to the local community shortly after. Our product is a fun, eco-friendly dishwashing sprinkle to hand wash your dishes with. This improves the sustainability and environmental footprint of your dishwashing habits. Our product works by adding a portion of our dishwashing sprinkles to your sink full of warm water and it fizzes and dissolves, ready to clean your dishes. 10% of our profits will be donated towards Sustainable Coastlines, a charity which focuses on cleaning our local coastlines and waterways whilst educating the surrounding communities about the cleanliness and sustainability of our coastlines and waterways. To keep up to date with our progress and show your support, follow us on Instagram and Facebook @SUDmerge or, if you have any questions or enquiries, email us at sudmerge@gmail.com Rebecca Inch, Sophie Palmer, Jess Galletly and Emily White

Year 12
Mock Interview Day The annual Year 12 Mock Interview Day was held this week and was a positive experience for the Year 12 students. Thirteen employers/ community members gave up their time to help prepare our students for their future job interviews. The Year 12 students had to prepare their CVs in advance for their interview, and dress to impress on the day. The feedback from the interviewers included how well presented the students were and how confident and communicative they came across.
The interviews were based around the students' choice of industry and gave them the opportunity to experience having to talk about themselves and sell their skills to a potential employer, putting many of the students outside their comfort zones and, for many, into a situation they have never before experienced. The students will now receive a feedback sheet to show areas of the interview they did well in, as well as areas they can now work on to be ready for their real interviews.
Thank you very much to the following employers/community members. Without your help this opportunity for our students would not be possible. The Year 11 Outdoor Education class had an awesome time climbing at Uprising Bouldering gym in Christchurch, as an introduction to climbing. Everyone had sore arms for days afterwards. Great fun!
Please ask your students to come and take a look if they know something has been misplaced. Parents are most welcome to come and check the clothing and items at Student Administration.

Food and Nutrition
Rira Takahashi and Carwyn Chaffey, making muffins as a thank you
Our Year 12 Food and Nutrition students have established a new garden at Darfield High School, as part of their unit on sustainable food practices. Bronwyn Hooper-Adams, one of the founders of the Nourish Community Garden, offered advice on how to get started and how to cope with Darfield's harsh winters. The team from W A Boyes Contractors donated the irrigation off-cuts, which allowed the students to create a multi-layered garden which holds warmth from the sun longer than a standard raised bed. W A Boyes also gave us mushroom compost which has proven to be a highly nutritious soil for our plants. The garden will provide fresh herbs, lemons and vegetables for our students. We have introduced a compost bin to reduce and re-use our waste. We are looking forward to Springtime when we can get some flowers in to attract the bees. 18 7 AUGUST 2020
