Year 12 Interview Day

Principal’s Comments Despite the recent snowy blasts, it feels as if spring is near, with the days getting longer, the daffodils and lambs showing up in places, and the winter sports drawing to a close. I broke my collarbone recently while playing my winter sport, so my season is already over. So far no snow days, but it is not unusual for there to be an early spring surprise for us all. Last term, I was away from school on a sabbatical. This gave me the opportunity to do some professional learning and research, attend a conference and visit some overseas schools. I am enjoying being back and working alongside our Board, staff, students and parents again. Thank you to Mr Adams for stepping up to be Acting Principal and to all staff for their hard work in a busy and challenging term. I am always proud to see our students contributing to our community through the work they do in leadership and other voluntary work. A new opportunity for students is the Student Volunteer Army Service Awards. Students sign up online and record the volunteer work that they do in the school and community. When they have sufficient hours logged, they earn badges, presented by the school, to recognise their work. The awards will provide a good way to record and recognise the student volunteers in our community and will be a good addition to the CV for scholarship and job applications. Term 3 continues the high level of activities and opportunities, with students having been involved in events such as the Formal, Open Evening, Southern Jam Jazz Festival and Junior Speech Competition. Events later in the term include the House Quiz Competition, Winter Tournament, Talent Quest, and Mock Exam Week. James Morris 2

VOLUNTEERING IS… If you’re doing something to help other people and you’re not doing it to make money then that’s volunteering. Whether you’re putting out cones at sports events, organising the school ball, caring for a sick whanau member, washing dogs at the SPCA, planting trees or picking up plastic rubbish at the beach you’re making contribution to your community and that counts.

STUDENT SUCCESSES

South Island Schools Cycling On 6 and 7 July, Ruapuna Raceway was open for the South Island Schools Cycling. On Saturday, it was the 3.4 km Time Trial: I came second with a time of six minutes and 20 seconds and I was pretty stoked, but surprised. It felt like all the hard work paid off because I trained quite a bit it for it. On Sunday, it was the 10 km Road Race. My weekend was already completed with getting the Silver medal and this was a bit of a bonus, but I thought to myself that I should go out there and give it

everything. Give it everything I did; there was a breakaway at the start of the race and they caught us all by surprise. I was on the front of the chase group giving it heaps, just edging closer every minute, but it wasn’t enough. They beat my group by seven seconds and I finished up 6th. It was still a brilliant weekend for me. I also really enjoyed seeing the great results of the other people representing Darfield High School. Austin Earl

During the last school holidays, Zoe Spinks attended the Down Under Athletics meet on the Gold Coast, Australia.

During the last school holidays, Z'Arn Payne and Earl Boado played to the elderly at the Lincoln Day Care Club. They were extremely well received and invited to return as soon as possible! Good on them for doing this voluntary work.

Athletes from USA, Australia and a handful from NZ competed over three days. Zoe won a silver medal in the 400 m and the Under 18 Girls (all from Canterbury) won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 m relay.

Shooting Champion! Ben Sharp competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Clay Target Shooting Championships recently and had a fantastic weekend shooting. He won the South Island Secondary Schools Championship for the second year in a row; this is only the second time in this championship's history that a shooter has successfully defended their title! To top it off, he won the blue ribbon event of the day, Single Rise High Overall, after a lengthy 105 target shoot-off with ten other competitors. Out of 26 New Zealand schools (including 15 competitors from the North Island) and some 112 shooters, Ben won the competition! We are very proud of his achievements and we were told he is widely respected by his peers throughout NZ! Congratulations, Ben!

On behalf of the Darfield High School Year 9 A netball team, I would like to thank the Hagley Park Netball Centre for hosting the South Island Secondary Schools Netball competition on 8-10 July. The Year 9 A netball team were very lucky to have the opportunity to go this year. It was a great experience and very well organised. Although the competition was tough, the girls learnt a lot. We would also like to thank our coaches, team managers and parents for taking the time out of their day to come and support us. It was a fun experience and, if you have the opportunity to go, you should definitely take it. ISSUE 8 / DHS DISPATCH

The Darfield High School Senior Art Exhibition, Surface, opened at the Selwyn Art Gallery on the evening of Friday 26 July. The opening was a great success, with a good turn-out from students, family, friends and art enthusiasts alike. Students at Level 2 and Level 3 elect to work in a particular field for NCEA assessment. The exhibition featured work from a range of disciplines, including painting, digital painting,

sculpture, printmaking and photography. A diverse range of themes has also been explored, which allows students to generate interesting and individualised art work.

The Art department would like to thank the Selwyn Gallery for hosting the show and our wonderful Arts Co-ordinator, Sarah Grenfell, for her help and support.

The public feedback has been really positive, with many impressed with the high level of talent from DHS Art students. The exhibition was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their work, with several works selling.

Surface closed on 7 August. Louise Carey HOD Art

Year 9 1: Blakely Bruce-Sheppard 2: Holly Borham 3: Alice Thorne Year 10 1: Annabelle Serra 2: Emma Miles 3: Melissa Duncan On Thursday 1 August, the Junior Oral Tapestries Speech finals were held. This event consisted of Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 finalists - three contestants from each year. As time ticked by, 6.45 pm rolled around, and the contestants arrived at the library. There was a nervous wait for 15 minutes until it was finally showtime. First, the three Year 7s performed, then the Year 8s, and so on. Two judges (Mr Tsavousis and Mrs Hamilton) were seated in the audience, and marked everyone's performance. Mr Gough hosted the event, and some English teachers were present too. It was a memorable experience, and I hope to make it to the finals next year too! The performances were great, and were on really informative topics. Congratulations to all of the contestants that night they were amazing! Emma Miles

YEAR 12

INTERVIEW DAY

12

13 AUGUST 2019

The annual Year 12 mock Interview Day was once again a huge success. 16 employers/community members gave up their time to come into school and help prepare our students for their future interviews. The year group dressed to impress, and impress they certainly did. The feedback from the interviewers included how well presented the students were and how confident and communicative they came across. The interviews were based around the students' choice of industry and gave them the opportunity to experience having to talk about themselves and sell their skills to a potential employer, putting them outside their comfort zones and, for many, into a situation they have never before experienced. The students will now receive a feedback sheet to show them areas of the interview they did well, as well as areas they can now work on to be ready for their real interviews.

SOFT MATERIALS PROJECTS

The first assessment of the year was centred around conceptual design. The brief allocated was to design and make a costume for a character of choice in the school production of Grease.

The assessment required students to: • research existing designs • draw at least three contrasting concept designs • gather feedback from relevant stakeholders • test and trial, including making a toile (calico version to check fit, shape and function) • draw a fashion illustration of their final design and justify its fitness of purpose • construct the costume ready in time for the production of Grease I was very impressed with the high level of informed decisions made by the students, because they researched deeply and ensured they gathered a wide range of stakeholder feedback. Their final designs and construction created costumes that were very successful on stage and definitely suited their characters.

Cassidy Wells chose to create a skirt and petticoat for Cha Cha (Maia Adams). Cassidy's research showed her skirt needed to have sass and attitude and had to contrast with the other character; it also had to function well for dancing (as you can see it did!). Olivia Manning chose Sandy (Kate Morris) as her character. Olivia spent lots of time ensuring that the colour, style and function of her skirt and silky underskirt matched the sweetness and innocence of Sandy.

PEACE WEEK MAKING PAPER CRANES

During Peace Week, on Wednesday at lunchtime in J Block, some Japanese students came to teach us how to make paper cranes. Darfield High School is going to make 1,000 paper cranes to take to the Peace Park in Japan. On Wednesday, we made around 200 paper cranes to help with this challenge. They will be taken to Japan by Darfield High School students who are part of an exchange programme. They’ll be hung up on Sadako’s statue. Sadako is a girl who got cancer from a nuclear bomb in Japan. She believed that if she made 1,000 paper cranes then she would be cured; sadly she didn’t make it to 1,000 before she passed away. It turns out that paper cranes are quite difficult to make and it took a few minutes for us to make one. We will try and reach 1000 during the rest of the year. Emily Richards and Annabella Rooney

The trip to Great Barrier Island was an experience provided by the Malvern Lions. We were hand selected for the scholarship, firstly by the school and then by a panel. This was the first year for this experience and was a trial of the scholarship. The scholarship was hosted at Hillary Outdoor Adventure Camp on Great Barrier Island and, luckily for us, they let three people go. Eventually, the April holidays came around and we were at Great Barrier Island enjoying the beautiful weather, the landscape and last, but most importantly, the activities. On Day One, we arrived at Great Barrier and spent the rest of the day getting familiar with our group. One of the activities was the giant’s ladder: two people climbed up a ladder that only got bigger, and you had to use partnership to get up to the top. On Day Two, we did kayaking and coasteering. The kayaking was over five km one way, and then we had a two km coaster around the small island of Okokewa. Coasteering is where you walk on big rocks and, when it gets hard, you jump into the sea to swim around them. On Day Three, we went to Mabey's beach and we did more coasteering, played around in the sea, did surfing and played games in the water. Day Four was the full last day on the island and was the day we would do the overnight stay and Via Ferrata. Via Ferrata is where you climb around a rock and you are connected by rope to the rest of the group. After our experience with that, we made our way to Nimaru Bay, where we had an overnight stay. Day Five was the last day on this breath-taking island. We made it back to Orama, packed up, hopped on the bus, hopped on a plane, hopped on another plane and eventually hopped in the car to home. I can’t thank the Malvern Lions enough for this most amazing, breath-taking experience and, if you get the chance to apply for this, I say grab it by the throat and apply, because not only did I have the time of my life, but I also made lifelong friends through this adventure. On Monday 10 June, students from DHS went to Rolleston College to battle it out with words. Year 10 students, Anna Smith, Bailey Inwood, Peter Bourgeois, Emma Coyle and Emma Wason, along with Year 9 student Lily Barwick, all did well and all contributed equally "that there should be the right to do wrong". They executed their debate against it and, defended their argument against Lincoln High School students. They didn't win any prize but we are going back to do it again this month.

LAWRENCE PATCHETT

This week, the Library and English Department collaborated to bring author, Lawrence Patchett, to DHS. It was a really cool event! Lawrence is a Pākehā writer of fiction who was raised near the Waikirikiri/Selwyn River. He is familiar with our school— some years ago he worked as a reporter for the Selwyn Times before doing a PhD in Creative Writing at Victoria University. Lawrence is at present one of Ursula Bethell's Writers in Residence at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha/ the University of Canterbury. The three hours that Lawrence spent with our students were well received. Two Year 11 English classes explored the ideas behind To Kill a Mockingbird and how they relate relations between cultures here in Aotearoa. The students gave great feedback (see quotes). Lawrence held a writing workshop with 27 of our keen Years 7, 8 and 9 students and then spent time with some of our senior students. These students are looking to use their writing skills as part of their career pathway; Lawrence had some good tips and was encouraging and engaging. As well as being an author, Lawrence has wide work experience, including his present position as a report writer for the Waitangi Tribunal.

WHAT I ENJOYED "How he inspired us and participated in what we did." "The story writing was fun." "Learning how to put a certain phrase in my writing and how it could change in context." "The mindmap thinking." "Boiling ideas down." "I enjoyed the use of Maori when he was talking." "I enjoyed his thought process and the starter he gave us for a story." "I enjoyed listening to Lawrence's ideas on the way he sees To Kill a Mockingbird, and his ideas on the way to write a creative story with political ideas in it." "I enjoyed how you broke down the novel to one word".

22

13 AUGUST 2019

PARTICIPATION "He asked us questions and had us write our own stories instead of just telling us facts." "When we bounced ideas between each other, we all benefited from our contributions." "He allowed us to put our ideas up on the board." "He let us write a creative story, using a few of his guidelines - we all participated." "He let everyone have a chance to talk and share their ideas." "He asked us questions and our perspectives on the topic." "He gave us time to write, talk to others, etc."

PROTECTION "One thing he did to protect our mana was by not asking too deep questions and saying positive things." "Protected the tribunal's mana by making us aware that he is not speaking on their behalf." "He said no answer is wrong." "Didn't force us to answer - really kind." "He respected our ideas when we shared them." "He started off by speaking in Maori showing he has respect and knowledge of the culture." ISSUE 8 / DHS DISPATCH

ARCHITECTURE in its many different forms On Thursday 1 August, the Year 12 DVC class had a day out as research for their spatial design project - the new Hororata Community Hall. The day started at Hororata, learning about the history of the existing Hall, followed by a walk-through to experience the issues with the Hall as it is, then a short trek around the Hororata Domain to establish a likely location for the new Centre. Then it was a quick bus ride to West Melton Community Centre to experience a newly built centre and watch it in use, exploring spaces for office, storage, meetings, kitchen, play, sports, etc. Luckily the weather held for our architecture tour of Christchurch in the afternoon, starting with the Transitional Cathedral (Cardboard Cathedral), then a walk-through the CBD. We were all suitably impressed with the creative and innovative architecture on display. Many thanks to Helen McCallion for accompanying us.

Yoshida High School Group For the first two weeks of Term 3, DHS hosted three students and one teacher from our sister school, Yoshida High School. It is located in Akitakata, Hiroshima and DHS students visit on their biennial trip to Japan. This year, the Yoshida students enjoyed orientation, two sightseeing outings, and a variety of classes and activities during their time at DHS. Personal highlights from the students included seeing different types of animals, eating a BBQ lunch at Rubicon Farm, being able to communicate with their host families, jet boating and fun ESOL classes. The two weeks passed very quickly and we were all sad to farewell Juna, Shuta, Yuma and Mr Hisano from school. The Yoshida High School principal, Mr Morita, came to visit on their last day, and met Mr Morris and Mrs Hayakawa to discuss future activities between our two schools. We all look forward to more Kiwi and Japanese students being involved in years to come.

The Darfield High Junior students of French (Years 9 and 10) have the opportunity to take part in the New Caledonia exchange programme. This programme started in 2013, and since then we have travelled twice to New Caledonia and twice hosted a group of New Caledonian students. To run this exchange, I am working in collaboration with Valerie Grenillier who works as an English teacher at the College de Paiamboue in New Caledonia. The College de Paiamboue is a public school near Kone, in the North Province of New Caledonia. They teach Years 7 to 10. The terms of our exchange are: a pen-friend programme prior to the trip and visits from each school in alternate years. Darfield will be visiting in November this year, with a group of twelve Years 9 and 10 students (five boys and seven girls). The students will be accompanied by two teachers (Marjorie Juhel, French teacher and Mark Saunders, Maths teacher). We expect that the College of Paiamboue students will do a similar visit to New Zealand in 2020, and that this visit will include a stay in Darfield. ISSUE 8 / DHS DISPATCH

New Caledonia 2019 On 10 November, we will travel to Noumea via Auckland. We will stay the first five days in Noumea where we will visit the Tjibaou Cultural Centre and some of the famous local landmarks. We will also do some scuba diving and visit the Aquarium. Did you know that New Caledonia has one of the largest coral reefs in the world? We will then travel north by bus to Kone to meet our penfriends. On the way, we will visit Fort Teremba and the NZ Pacific War cemetery; a great opportunity to learn more about the history of New Caledonia. Once in Kone, we will be hosted by the College de Paiamboue and its families. We will go to school and fully immerse ourselves in the local community. Our Languages department strongly believes in the learning benefits of travel and language immersion, but also the benefits for the development of our young people. This is why we, as a school, value oversea

school exchanges; they open doors to new experiences and challenges for students. While travelling and meeting other young people, our students develop a sense of world citizenship and a better understanding of themselves and others. Because the exchange programme runs on alternate years, students travelling this year will have the opportunity to host in return next year, which means that students and families are creating bonds that are extended over the years. This also means that the exposure to the New Caledonian culture is not limited to the students, but will extend to their wider family. As we are preparing for the trip, the students are running a number of fundraising events. Please have a look at some of those events on the next page and support them. Marjorie Juhel TIC French 29

Participation in Junior Physical Education (Years 7-10) Students are expected to participate in Physical Education classes at all times and to the best of their ability. There will be times when participation is limited by injury or illness; however, students are required to be positively contributing to the lesson, ie scoring, helping with equipment and encouraging others. Lessons are adapted to ensure inclusion of all students and the expectation is that students are changed and ready to participate. Lost Property There is a large number of unclaimed items from last year. Please can you get your students to come and take a look if they know something has been misplaced. Parents: you are most welcome to come and check the clothing and items at Student Administration. If you have items that do not belong to you, please can they be returned to the Student Administration Office. Parking Outside the School Outside the school on McLaughlins Road, is a no stopping zone. We need parents to observe the ‘No Parking or Stopping Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside residents' driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated car parks and not in front of residents’ driveways. The car parks outside the school hall are reserved for staff and visitors coming into the school. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road, or south-west on McLaughlins Road. DHS Canteen Orders Students are reminder to place orders at interval for lunchtime pickup at the canteen. Uniform in Colder Weather Our classrooms are well-heated and students have access to rooms at interval and lunchtime on days when the weather warrants them being inside. With regard to keeping warm, there are items of regulation uniform which can be worn in colder weather: · Long-sleeved shirt · Jersey · Blazer · Plain black or plain navy jacket (no logos) Thermals are permitted but must not be visible.
