JUNIOR PRIZE GIVING

NEW CALEDONIA TRIP

YEAR 8 MARKET DAY

Inaugural Dennis Cullen Memorial Trophy

Principal’s Comments At the Junior prizegivings, we recognised the achievements of over 230 students in Years 7-10. This reflects the wide breadth of the talents our students exhibit. Recognising the success of some does not mean those not coming up are unsuccessful. The teachers work hard during the year through the feedback they give to students, to identify their successes and next steps. Often the thing we see as success in school is a particular type of achievement. Generally, the things we formally assess through tests are the things that are easy to measure. Counting, recall, writing, knowledge and understanding – usually in a written form. These are all important to measure, report and celebrate; however, they are only a small part of the glorious range of human attributes that we seek to develop as part of a person’s education. Some things are not easily measured and so we tend not to measure them or report on them. Things like creativity, social skills, caring for others, initiative, curiosity and enthusiasm. We see these things, we know what they are, but they are hard to put a number or curriculum level on. This does not mean we don’t value them or teach them. We lead by example, praise when we see it, they are part of expectations, part of our school culture. And we need to keep nurturing

2

and valuing them. The form class awards at prize giving are a good example of this. They are one way we can recognise that the way you do things is at least as important as the goal you achieve. For the helpful, the caring, the creative and the enthusiastic: I hope that you have been recognised in many ways through the year – by teachers, by parents, by peers and, importantly, seeing it in yourself. There is a Maori whakatauki or proverb that is reflected in many sayings in many cultures. E hara taku toa I te toa takaitahi, engari he toa takitini.

The Cullen family donated a trophy in memory of Dennis Cullen: The Dennis Cullen Memorial Trophy for the Male Student in the Senior School who Participates Fully in the Academic, Cultural, Sporting and Social Life of the School. Dennis Cullen attended Darfield High School from the February 1976 to November 1979. Dennis excelled in rugby and athletics. He was a member of the 1st XV rugby team for three years from the age of 14. Dennis also enjoyed being involved in the school productions. Academically, Dennis was a high achiever. The school appreciates the Cullen family's support of our students. The inaugural Dennis Cullen Memorial Trophy was presented to Fergus Thomas at Senior Prizegiving on 4 December.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many. The success of our children depends on the work of many. Thank you to the big support team – staff, BOT, family, friends – who enable this to happen. Thank you for your hard work and your patience to support these students through this year at Darfield High School. Wishing you all a safe and relaxing summer break. James Morris The school apologises for printing the name of the trophy incorrectly in the list published in the last Dispatch.

What can I say! I've been here since 2007 in roles covering both long and short term contracts. I have worked in almost every department within the school from Year 7s up and loved my time in them all, especially in Technology. Contrary to popular belief, I am finally, after 43 years in teaching, calling it a day and leaving

on a high with DHS as my final Teaching position. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff and wish all the students the very best for 2018 and on. Janet Nethercott

and women. Other highlights have been being involved with the school rugby program as both coach of the 1st XV and Under 15 teams. In the last few years it's been really rewarding to see the development of these teams and the creation of a culture that has seen the boys really value playing for their school again. Finally, I'm looking forward to the challenge of taking up the Deans role at Marlborough Boys College and hope that I can get to work with as many great people there as I have done here.

After a long association with Darfield High School and as firstly a student, and now a staff member it still feels a bit surreal to think I will be moving on at the end of the year. During my time here I have had so many highlights and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside some brilliant people as a member of both the Physical Education and Social Sciences Departments. As a Dean, seeing my cohort come through from Year 9 right up to Year 13 this year, has been a particular highlight. While they've caused me a few headaches at times, its been great to see them develop into such a fine bunch of young men

When I started my teaching career almost six years ago, I had no idea that I would travel over 80,000km, drink (over) 5000 coffees in the staffroom, write a minimum of 1500 individualised report comments, or meet so many amazing teachers, students, support staff and parents. Highlights of my time at Darfield include the many school camps, assisting with Productions, and all the crazy conversations that have occurred in my classroom - most completely unrelated to Maths! It has been a pleasure and an honour to come to Darfield each day and interact with such intelligent, caring, polite, creative ISSUE 14 / DHS DISPATCH

and friendly students. I have, without hesitation, loved each and every one of my classes. I would like to mention a few people, without whose support I would not have become the teacher I am today: David and Karen Armstrong, Trish Evans, Andie Hanson, Justin Basevi, Barbara Ellena, Jemma Rangi, Vic Oliver, June Milne; thank you all for giving me the opportunities, advice and courage to become who I am today! Much love to all past and present students and colleagues of Darfield High School. I will miss you! GO WAIMAK!!! Mel Evans 3

DHS 12 Years Boys Winning Relay Team Harrison Beresford, Izak Derik-Westaway, Beau Gibbs, Dylan Butler On Wednesday 6 December, a group of excited students headed down to Ashburton to compete in the Canterbury Primary Schools Athletics. Some students travelled with their parents, others in the school vehicle. Thankfully, the weather was not too hot, so it made for a great day of exciting competition. Over 2000 students from schools in Christchurch, North Canterbury, West Coast and Mid Canterbury met at the Ashburton Domain, causing minor traffic jams! 4

Building Progress On "F Block"

Tēnā koutou katoa. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

Below: Chrissie Fairbrass with her customer service and sales awards from Libel, the new canteen management company.

It is our great pleasure to let the community know that Darfield High School has a new group of students that have come together to make up the Kapahaka for 2017. This has been due to Whaea Camille Cartman committing herself and her Year 7 form class to learning waiata and haka during class time and every Wednesday preceding the Malvern Kapahaka Festival.

to be done, she was the go to point. It’s her hard work that has helped our roopū to come through and be able to perform on the day. Ka nui te aroha ki a koe, Whaea Vicki. Tino nui rawa atu ō mahi. Thanks, Whaea Vicki.

Thanks to Whaea Camille, the kapahaka numbers were given a solid start, in the four to six weeks prior to the festival. Thanks also to Years 7 & 8 students from other classes, who came along and added their voices and participated at the festival. Ngā mihi maioha ki a koe, Whaea Camille.

Te Roopū O Te Aka Tawera Kapahaka Whānau 2017.

Thanks to the pre-schoolers, participating schools, teachers and their tutors, for their performances and participation. Ngā mihi kauaka ki a koutou. See you all again in 2018. Bring it on! Meri kirihimete, ā, kia pai ō koutou hararei. Nga mihi kauaka ki a koutou katoa. Thank you all so much; have a Merry Christmas, a happy New Year and a great recovery/holiday. Matua Wiremu Puanaki, Whaea Vicki Oliver, Whaea Camille Cartman and Kōkā Hiria.

We also thank our new kapahaka tutor, Matua Wiremu Puanaki. We look forward to his return in 2018. Tēnā koe, e te Matua. Finally, Whaea Vicki Oliver; what a marvellous support person she has been to the Kapahaka. Her energy, administration, organisation and liaison on behalf of our tutor and our kapahaka, have been just awesome. If the kapa needed anything The youth workers organised the pedal mania bikes on Year 6 Transition day.

Spreading Some Christmas Cheer

Year 8

Market Day

To put it mildly the Year 8 Garden party was SUPERB! It was an incredibly hot day last Friday but this did not stop the students setting up their beautiful stalls and products. The garden itself was full of produce planted earlier in the year. There was everything for sale ice cream, jelly, bath bombs, toffee apples, slime, sausages, baked potatoes, lavender bags, Christmas decorations, tote bags, fudge, lemonade, cupcakes, Venus fly traps, plants, lollies, chocolate dipped strawberries and marshmallows, bacon butties, sugar scrub, worm pooh, scarecrows the list goes on! The Year 8s were brilliant salespeople and at times it felt like we were in a market in some exotic land with all the bartering going on! A huge thank you must go to all our generous sponsors, parents, staff and of course the awesome Year 8 students. Their efforts raised over $2000 for Kidscan: so good!!!

Students visited Westmar Senior Care Centre and Darfield Hospital last week to perform for the residents. Spreading some Christmas cheer were Emma-Daniel Wilson, Teresa Barnhill, Georgie Hamilton, Amanda-Jane Jones, Katie Griffiths, Emma Miles, Ethan Longdin, Harry Williamson, Becky Bruce, Ethan Spence, Katherine Hadler, Issy Kennedy, Emily Waters, Earl Boado and teachers Rachel Balchin, Guy de Lacey, Cecilia Pascoe and Pauline Sewell.

Welcome to Darfield High School It was wonderful to see all the Year 6s on Thursday 7 December for their transition day at Darfield High School. These students come from the surrounding eight local primary schools. This day is organised so the new students can learn their way around the school, meet their teachers for next year and meet future classmates and new friends.

We welcome you all and look forward to seeing you at the start of 2018.

Peer Support Training

On Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 December, Mr Adams and Mrs Cartman trained 34 Year 11 students to be Peer Support leaders. These students will be working with the Year 7 classes next year, once a week for at least the first term. The Year 11s participated in many activities based around getting to know you, communication, cooperation, self-confidence, self-esteem, bullying and peer pressure. This is a wonderful leadership opportunity for our Year 11s and will help develop positive relationships with next years Year 7s. A huge thank you to George Gibb for coming on both days and helping Mr Adams and Mrs Cartman run the programme.

It had been long awaited, but finally the day was here! The day we were departing! Everyone met at the airport, got sorted and then we were off! Our first impressions of New Caledonia were that A. It was very hot. B. It was very dry and C. The people were all very friendly and welcoming. We spent a few days in Nouméa (the capital of New Caledonia) doing touristy things, some of the highlights being Amédéé Island and the aquarium. The day we went to Amédéé Island was awesome. We caught a ferry to the island and got to go snorkelling with turtles, walked up the huge lighthouse, had a traditional buffet lunch, watched live dancing shows and got to participate in all sorts of activities. Then it was off to Ouégoa to stay with our host families. The first night was quite scary, as we were all settling in and getting used to everything, but the next day everything was fine and we got to

experience school with our buddies, which was super cool: school over there is so different to here. The rest of the week we spent with our host families and doing cultural activities with our buddies. It was very hard to say goodbye to them in the end: there were lots of tears. We stayed one more night in Nouméa and then we were off home! The trip was lots of fun and eye-opening. We saw and experienced things that we never would have tried on our own, but placed in an unfamiliar environment we were all keen to get the most out of our time there, so we tried everything. We all give a huge thank you to the teachers, Mrs Juhel and Mrs Hanson, the parents and everyone behind the scenes who made our trip possible! It was amazing!

It was only the third day of our trip to New Caledonia and so much fun and cultural experiences had already been discovered and experienced . We all left our apartment at 8.00 am to depart to a small yet beautiful tropical island called Amédéé island which was only one hour boat trip away from Nouméa.

Zara Woodward

The island consisted of golden sands, and clear crystal blue water with really great visibility, which was great for snorkelling with the turtles and the many other types of exotic sea life inhabiting the island. We went to the top of the lighthouse, which was one of the islands main attractions, and looked at the amazing views of all the reefs and ocean surrounding the little tropical island.

Thank you to the New Zealand France Friendship Fund and the Malvern Community Board for their generous support. 12

Snorkelling was another activity that we participated in; we were all very fortunate that the day that we came the turtles were up very close, so while we were snorkelling through many schools

of colourful fish, we also got to swim with some friendly turtles and got to have a decent close-up encounter with them. Later in the day, we all had a massive traditional buffet with lots of other tourists visiting the island, and we got to indulge in traditional New Caledonian cuisine. The day got even better than it already was and we were very lucky and got to see a very special animal. New Caledonia is home to: the sea Krait, which is a poisonous snake. The sea krait is white with distinctive black stripes and can be seen slithering on many areas of the land and swimming in the ocean. The day overall was just amazing and it was one of the highlights of the 2017 New Caledonia exchange. The best way to experience it is to go there and see how amazing it really is. Heidi Lovelock

Recently, ten keen writers from DHS went into Christchurch to Speed Date an Author. This event was run by the New Zealand Book Council, with funding from Creative NZ, and brought together some renowned local authors to share their techniques and tips on the writing process. Authors Karen Healey and Carl Nixon, poet Tusiata Avia and illustrator Malene Laugesen provided a variety of useful activities so that each student left the workshops with their own original piece of writing. It was a great event and all participants would recommend the experience to other keen writers. Feedback included "Learned a lot of very interesting tips to use in our own writing," "Good tips," "Informative," "Keen to do it again next year," "Really helpful".

DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION

On Monday the 11 December, the 9SG and 9ME classes presented their innovative and inventive Dragons' Den products in front of the panel of judges. The ideas were amazing although some were more practical, and realistic, than others, but they were overall quite creative. The ideas ranged from a DIY Teen Journal and a portable football pitch, to a pair of shoes with wheels and a small windmill, and all were well presented with a polished slideshow. All these presentations were very imaginative and people had worked very hard on them. They were quite interesting to watch and we were able to see some people's creative side come out. Overall, we would like to thank the judges for judging and the students for putting in the hard work and effort. Lily Cameron
