Mihi Whakatau: the school year begins with a formal welcome A warm welcome was extended to new staff and students as they began their journey through Darfield High School. Excited, and some a bit nervous, they were led into the hall by Ms Evans and welcomed by Mr Morris, Principal, and Gus Thomas, Year 13, representing the Peer Support team. The Peer Support group will be spending time with the Year 7s, working closely with them to help new students become confident and settled into their new surroundings. Mr Morris encouraged everyone to celebrate their past and acknowledge where they have come from. Darfield Primary students attended and, representing all our contributing schools, formally handed over their students, asking Mr Morris to "take good care of them as they are precious to us". They sang beautifully and we were delighted to have them take part in this special ceremony. Staff then encouraged new teachers and students to engage in a hongi, an act of trust between two parties, before gathering outside for morning tea and getting to know one another better. We wish those new to the school all the best for the coming year and encourage everyone to take advantage of any opportunities that arise.

10 FEBRUARY 2017
Principal’s Comments Welcome to the 2017 school year at DHS. Last week we welcomed 128 new Year 7 students, 15 students from other year levels and seven new staff. Our shared responsibility as a school community is to do what we can to help those new to the school settle in and feel welcome. The development of the school timetable begins half way through the previous year and continues into the first weeks of the new year. Our main goals with the timetable are to: •
effectively support the delivery of the NZ Curriculum to all students
•
enable students to take a course that best meets their needs
•
efficiently use resources to do this.
As is normal for the first few days of the year there have been changes to the timetable and classes as we work hard to find the best fit. As you can imagine, doing this for 850 students, 65 teachers, 31 form classes, 50 teaching spaces, seven year levels, and 150 subjects in 25 periods each week has its challenges. This can create some confusion and frustrations while changes occur; however, it is important to get it right early rather than ‘make do’ for the year. One of the reasons for the need for change is that when senior students return to school at the start of the year, many will want to do a different course due to changed career goals or as a result of exam grades notified in January. As classes grow or shrink, we may add or move classes and teachers. In addition, changes need to be made to accommodate late changes in teacher staffing. At the junior school levels, form class changes are mostly made at the end of the previous year; however, sometimes changes are needed early in the new year to best meet individual needs. Additional enrolments have also contributed to some further development of the timetable. Every new year is a time of new beginnings, new classes, a chance for a fresh start. I h ope over the break our students have had a chance to reflect on what went well (and to keep doing) and what they need to do differently. James Morris ISSUE 1 / DHS DISPATCH

I have been teaching for seventeen years: ten years at Rangiora Borough School and seven years at Rangiora High School. I was a Specialist Classroom Teacher at RHS and was responsible for Professional Development and assisting teachers/faculties to enhance their programmes and teaching to improve educational outcomes. I am passionate in helping young people reach their goals and true potential.
I have many years of teaching experience over a variety of subjects. At Darfield High School I look forward to sharing the Technology curriculum through the creative process using soft materials to grow student capacity and breadth of understanding. In my spare time I love to recreate in the outdoors and coach.
Kia Ora, I am very pleased to join the staff as a Specialist Teacher based with the Learning Centre and as a form teacher for 8AJ. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week getting to know the students and staff.
Currently my husband, son and I live in Rangiora; however we are making the move to Darfield. My son has just started at DHS and cannot believe how friendly and welcoming everyone has been. I am looking forward to being the Year 8 Dean and working with these amazing students. We are excited about this shift and are looking forward to being a part of this community.
I look forward to meeting many of you and to the opportunities and experiences that DHS has to offer.
Louise Carey I first began teaching Art at Darfield High School in 2008. Now I find myself returning once more after a five-year break to have two children, Rose and Flynn. I'm looking forward to this year and getting back into the department, working with students who share a love of making Art.
Kerry Sullivan Hello, I am excited to be teaching Science and senior Biology this year. I have lived in Canterbury for three years, originally off a small farm in Pukekohe, south of Auckland. Before studying to become a teacher this year, I worked in the Science industry, looking at plant and insect genetics. I enjoy the outdoors and love going tramping and fly-fishing in the hills around Canterbury. I also play netball in the winter. I am looking forward to getting involved in the local and school community.

Welcome to our new international students This year we welcome ten new international students starting in Term 1, who join our seven returning international students. They began the year with a two-day orientation programme, and enjoyed experiencing some Maori culture at the Mihi Whakatau. Although there were some nervous faces on the first day of school, everyone is settling in well. A big thank you to the buddies who have looked after our new students so well, and our staff, host families and the community for warmly welcoming them. Our new students are:

Firefighter: Eloise Dance
The Malvern Lions Club Scholarship Congratulations to Grace Lemon Grace was presented The Malvern Lions Club Scholarship by Mr John Morten, President, (right) at Senior Prizegiving. The Lions are active in our local, national and international communities fundraising and supporting a wide range of projects. The Malvern Lions Scholarship is for students intending to study full time for a recognised qualification. The all-round aspects of each applicant are considered.
Excellences All Round! Eloise Dance has had a busy summer training to become a Selwyn Rural firefighter. The weekend saw Eloise put her newly acquired skills to the test when she was asked to be part of a crew to support DOC workers at Broken River. Fire had broken out in an inaccessible area alongside the railway tracks, making it really hard for fire fighters to get in.
Congratulations to all those students who did well in their exams and especially to those who gained Levels 1, 2 and 3 in NCEA with Excellence: Emma Grigg, Lilian Stott, Chloe Fraser, Edward Searle, Kathryn Barnhill, Ellen Walters, Courtney Townsend and Michael Ridgen . Eddie Searle also did exceptionally well, gaining an Outstanding Scholarship in Geography.
We are in awe of Eloise and other fire fighters in our area who do such a great job!

Sophie Townsend has just completed a trip of a lifetime, representing New Zealand in the final FEI Children’s International Show Jumping Competition in Guadalajara (Mexico). She has attained some outstanding results on the world equestrian stage. Day One consisted of the drawing of the horses for 32 riders from all over the world— Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Guatemala, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, South Africa, Venezuela and

New Zealand. Sophie drew a horse called Conchita, owned by a local Mexican rider, also competing in the competition. Later that afternoon, there was a training session before the warm-up round the following day.
This left her a creditable 6th overall in the competition and she was later awarded the Style Prize for the Best Rider in the competition by the FEI Committee. It was a great honour to be awarded this.
The first day of qualifying started on Wednesday and Sophie and Conchita finished second place after producing a very efficient speed round. Once again, Sophie and Conchita produced two immaculate clear rounds the following day, which was the final day of qualifying, and finished 5th, leaving her the top-placed foreign rider over the two qualifying rounds, progressing her through to the final round.
It has been an incredible opportunity and experience which Sophie will value for the rest of her life.
After a day off sight-seeing around the city of Tequila on Saturday, the final round started, proving to be a very challenging course for the time allowed. Once again, Sophie proved to the world that she deserved to be there and produced a stunning clear round but, unfortunately, crossed the finish flags 0.53 of a second over the time allowed, leaving her with one time fault, her only fault over the three days of competition.

House Colours
Mufti Day With a new year and new students, new House Captains and Deputies, our second week back at school began with an enthusiastic and colourful Mufti Day competition. There were some pretty awesome outfits and a chance to show these off before the whole school at interval. Mr Adams and Mr Morris selected winning Houses from each year level, photos were taken and House chants reverberated around the lower school. The Wilson family (die-hard Rawhiti fans) made everyone laugh with their fabulous papier machĂŠ duck costumes. Although the level of creative costumes was high, there can be only one winning team and this year it was Kikorangi! Rawhiti came second, followed by Tawera and Waimakariri. Well done to all those students who took the time to dress up and represent their House. If you weren't brave enough to, then you will have more opportunities throughout the year, winding up with the Tabloid Sports. Make sure you have done all you can to help your team win the House Cup the year!

Canteen News Welcome to 2017! We are looking forward to another year providing nourishing and delicious lunches for students and staff in our canteen. Also, for those hot days, come and get yourself a slushy or ice cream. If you have a student with dietary requirements, please feel free to ring the school and discuss this with me. We encourage students to order their lunches at interval so they don't miss out at lunchtime. Below are the Canteen Rules. Please read and discuss these with your student so we can be sure the Canteen is a happy, safe and great place to visit. Janice Van Tongeren (Canteen Manager)

Bus Routines and Behaviour Approximately 80% of Darfield High School students travel to school by bus. We have a section on our website devoted to buses and what you need to know if you have students travelling or intending to travel by bus. Go to our website: http://darfield.school.nz/ and you will find 'Buses' under the Explore tab. There you will find all sorts of handy information, including a map of the area our buses cover. If you click on any of the buses, you will see the bus route for that area in Google Maps. The buses on the routes are not where the bus stops, but show the times the bus goes past specific intersections. The times provided are for the morning runs for each route. Buses can arrive five minutes either side of the time stated for the junction. Any student wishing to travel on a bus which they are not enrolled on, must bring a note from a caregiver or parent requesting this, and give the note to the School Office before 11.15 am on the day concerned. Any student who will not be returning home on their bus is obliged to tell their Bus Monitor on the morning of the day concerned. Bus Monitors: Bus Monitors are students who are trusted and valued by the staff. They have our full support. Know who your bus monitors are and, if you have any issues at all, feel confident they will help you. They have direct contact with Mr Dickens, the Bus Controller, to help with your concerns. If you do not feel you are able to talk to your Bus Monitor in the first instance, see Mr Dickens.
Student behaviour is of utmost importance In order to ensure orderly behaviour, the following guidelines are to be observed by all students: •
No behaviour which distracts the driver is to permitted
•
All body parts are to remain inside the vehicle at all times
•
Nothing is to be thrown from the openings of the vehicle
•
Students must remain seated throughout the journey
•
Any form of bullying is unacceptable
•
No food or drink is to be consumed while on the bus
•
Yelling and abusive language is unacceptable
•
Politely follow instructions or any requests given by the driver and bus monitors
Early departure of buses The Principal will decide whether circumstances call for sending some or all students home early. When the decision to send one or more buses early is made: •
•
•
14
The Principal will notify all students and staff affected, asking them to assemble at a convenient point under the supervision of a staff member Students will be required to phone a parent before they can go home. If a parent cannot be contacted, arrangements will be made for the student to go to a neighbour or friend until the parents can be contacted The Bus Controller will contact any other school affected to make appropriate arrangements
Accidents Students are to remain seated and calm, awaiting instruction from the Bus Driver. Encourage others to do the same. Follow these instructions and assist where possible to maintain a calm and orderly atmosphere. If the Bus Driver is unable to give instructions, listen to the Bus Monitors. If you are asked to evacuate the bus, do so in a calm and orderly fashion, one row at a time starting from the front. Make sure you stay together in the nominated spaces and don't wander off.
Be safe on your journey Travelling on the bus to school can be fun—it is a great time to catch up with your friends and even to do some homework. You can help make the journey safe for everyone on the bus: •
When you are waiting for the bus, stand back from the road
•
Don't text or listen to music through headphones
•
You need to concentrate on the road, the traffic and anything else happening around you. Wait until the bus has stopped before boarding single file. Don't push and shove and let the younger children go first
•
Students should not cross the road until the bus is at least two power poles away
For parents •
If you are picking up students from the bus stop, meet them on the same side of the road the bus uses
•
Have an alternate plan unless you are running late
•
Always reduce speed to 20 km/h when passing a stationary school bus
Bus Controller: Mr Dickens (jd@darfield.school.nz) http://darfield.school.nz/enrolment/buses/ 10 FEBRUARY 2017
CONGRATULATIONS Lily Barrett-Power Lily came third in the Bates National Dressage Competition in Feilding during the holidays.
Contact Between Home and School We have found that up-to-date information is vital in case of an emergency but also for general day to day contact. To make contact with a family can sometimes be a challenge with out-of-date information. Have you changed your address recently? Changed cell phones? Changed place of work? Or would you like to update / change the emergency contact for your student? Increasingly, email is the method of choice for contact with home by the Form Teacher, for School notices, and for the Darfield Dispatch, our Newsletter. School Reports are emailed whenever possible, so an up-to-date email
address is something we are always looking for. If you are not getting any contact from the school by this method, please check that we have the correct email for your family. The second parent address, especially in the case of Reports going home, is often not updated. So, if any if changes apply to your family, please let me know by: • phoning 318 8411 / ext 3 • emailing jill@darfield.school.nz or • write it down and ask your student to deliver it to the Student Office. Thank you.
Lockers Around School
Congratulations! You have won an Around School Prize. See Mrs Watson on Tuesday.
Lockers are allocated on payment of $15. At the end of use, the $15 will be refunded on return of the key. In the case of a key being lost, another one will have to be cut—we do not hold spares at school. Students will need to pay for this and the charge will be the $15 bond. Students wishing to use a locker at school must apply to the Student Administrator, Mrs Hill. General use lockers are situated in A Block and C Block; they are metal lockers with built-in locks. In C Block, there is one bank of lockers which are a bigger size. Art and Graphics students will have first claim on these lockers. The Music
Block lockers are designated for Music students. Lockers for Digital Devices will be available in all Year 7 and Year 8 Homerooms. For other Year Levels, a limited number of digital device storage and charging lockers are available in the Library foyer. Students must bring their own padlock to use for these. The lockers are available to be used during the day as needed; they will not be allocated to individual students. Every locker must be emptied at the end of each day and the lock removed.

Careers Bus Comes to Darfield High Today, Mrs Munro organised for the Inzone Careers Bus to visit Darfield, allowing senior students to go aboard and see what the had to offer them in the way of careers advise or information. There were stations for each student and in no time, they had logged in and were finding out about their desired career path or just having a browse. The touch screens provided guidance for those who are undecided on their next step. Inzone’s high-tech Careers Kiosk provides up-to-date careers information and a fantastic multi-media view of a wide range of employment and training opportunities in New Zealand. Younger students also have a unique opportunity to find a career they can be passionate about. Students can then
16
select the correct subjects to maximise their potential to advance in these industries. Students have the opportunity to watch Inzone documentaries showcasing industries, educational institutions, and entrepreneurial New Zealanders. After viewing videos of their choice, the user can decide if they would like to receive further information on that career. An automated text message function is also available, which promptly responds to an information request with further information and website links. Thank you to Steph Kimber and Heather Clouston, local Mike Pero sales agents, who assisted with bringing the Mike Pero Career Coach Bus to Darfield students.

Parking outside school
While Police are targeting drivers who speed outside schools, we also need parents to observe the ‘No Parking Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep our students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside resident’s driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated carparks and not in front of residents’ driveways.
TRIATHLON
Thursday 16 February 9.00 am All bikes need to be left at the Darfield Baptist Church carpark before school. There will be someone over there to look after the bikes. Students can come to school in their PE uniform but must bring their school uniform to change into once the event is completed. The event begins at the Darfield Swimming Pool with Years 11-13 Individuals.
Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road or south-west on McLaughlins Road.
Parents and caregivers are most welcome to come and support their students. Postponement day Friday 17 February.

Students in Years 7–10 MUST wear PE uniform.
Tuesday 21 February
School Staffroom, 7.30 pm All Welcome
Come and meet a lovely crew of school helpers and fundraisers. All of the money we raise goes back into the school to help our students. You can choose as much, or as little, as you wish throughout the year, but we would love to see you—we need more helpers. See you there!
Students in Years 11–13 may wear a plain T Shirt, and black or navy shorts. Tights/bike shorts are permitted for seniors. We STRONGLY recommend the wearing of shoes due to the very hard and dry nature of the athletics field. Students are to come to school in their PE/sports uniforms if the weather is fine. If the weather doesn’t look good, school uniform is to be worn and PE/sports gear brought along. Parents and caregivers are most welcome to come along and support their students. Check the website on Tuesday morning for updates.
20 km past a stopped school bus! The speed limit when passing a bus that has stopped to let students on or off is 20 km/h. This rule applies to traffic on both sides of the road. The faster you go, the bigger the fine!

2017 Year 8 School Based HPV Vaccination Programme Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection which can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts and other types of cancers later in life. Early HPV immunisation offers the best protection against contracting these diseases. Starting 2017, both girls and boys in Year 8 will be offered free HPV Vaccination through the school based programme. A new updated version of the vaccine (Gardasil 9) will cover more strains of the virus, providing cover with 2 doses rather than 3 with Gardasil 4. The vaccination will continue to be available within the GP Practices, however, we encourage you to participate in the school based programme. Girls and boys who have partially started the process with their GP will have the option to complete the course through the school based programme. To enable students to receive the vaccination at school, parents will need to complete the consent form which will be sent home with the student along with supporting information during the first weeks of term one. Please check with your child or the school to ensure you receive the consent form and information pack. For more information about the vaccine, contact Public Health Nursing Service at 03 383 6877 Ext. 99469 or 99698, talk to your doctor, practice nurse or visit www.health.govt.nz/hpv.
