Un immaginario per altri mondi Le nuove mappe dell’arte Linda Kaiser Il tema della mostra da me individuato, Mappe dell’immaginario.

Rappresentazioni di mondi (im)possibili, riguarda la delimitazione o l’eliminazione dei confini, che rappresentano la sopravvivenza della nostra civiltà.

Attraverso le opere visionarie di artisti outsider, marginali e autodidatti, forse ancora poco noti e valorizzati rispetto al loro talento, ma attentamente selezionati sulla scena internazionale, viene presentata al pubblico una riflessione su insider e outsider, integrazione ed esclusione nell’arte, specchio della nostra società.

Le opere di artisti come Kuffjca Cozma (Moldavia), Margot, Izabella Ortiz, Evelyne Postic (Francia), Davide Mansueto Raggio (Italia), Joskin Siljan (Serbia) e Julia Sisi (Argentina) possono rappresentare oggi quelle nuove visioni dell’immaginario che si districano attraverso i meandri della mente, veri e propri passaggi di senso “altro”, canali che valicano ogni confine prestabilito.

Le mappe di mondi labirintici esposte in mostra tracciano percorsi originali, guidando lo spettatore a una lettura lenta e riflessiva dell’arte, intesa sia come pratica formale che come pensiero astratto. È proprio la lentezza la chiave propositiva del percorso che si snoda in Ducale Spazio Aperto, nome simbolico di un luogo fisico, affacciato sul Cortile Maggiore di Palazzo Ducale. Si giunge qui, di solito, attraverso i vicoli della città, labirinto urbano che riflette metaforicamente il labirinto mentale della gente. Le “vie di fuga” sono tante e diverse, a volte basta alzare gli occhi e osservare il cielo spezzettato, tra i palazzi.

Anche gli artisti di cui si parla offrono una miriade di possibilità e sicuramente tutti invitano a uscire dallo spazio ristretto e delimitato dei fogli di carta o delle tavole di legno sui quali si esprimono. Ognuno coltiva la propria ossessione, ma 5

nessuno sembra accontentarsi di una superficie “superficiale”; tutti appaiono alla ricerca di un’estensione “altra” e diversa, in cui la stanza non ha più pareti e il giardino segreto diventa incantato.

Loro stessi, tutti autodidatti, sono arrivati all’arte in maniera inconsueta, a causa di eventi eccezionali che li hanno segnati: c’è chi ha avuto un incidente, come Cozma e Siljan; chi un problema di salute o famigliare, come Ortiz e Postic; chi ha deciso di abbandonare la propria professione, come Margot e Sisi; chi è stato attaccato nel suo profondo, come Raggio.

Ognuno, però, pur appartenendo a mondi di origine, culture, etnie ed esperienze anche lontanissimi tra di loro, ha riversato nella propria opera un immaginario, il cui linguaggio espressivo pare basarsi su una linea comune e suggerisce, quindi, una lettura complessiva che accerterebbe una continuità, un fil rouge del destino.

Per Kuffjca Cozma (Moldavia, 1962), nella stanza in cui deve vivere dopo un grave incidente sul lavoro, il disegno è un soffio di libertà, in una costruzione sedimentata di forme astratte in continua evoluzione.

La sua è una scrittura automatica, spontanea, un flusso continuo di segni che si compongono in forme concentriche o a spirale. Dalle grafie più o meno sovrapposte delle opere in bianco e nero, con espressioni in lingua romena (And I’ve felt and very / E ho sentito e molto), l’artista si sta spostando agevolmente verso le prime sperimentazioni con il colore.

Il suo mondo appare più gioioso nelle due opere più recenti, dell’estate 2017 (And maybe people will surprise us / E forse la gente ci sorprenderà; And we live / E noi viviamo), in cui compaiono figure umane stilizzate, racchiuse (difese?) in bolle di attenzione, fluttuanti nell’amalgama complessivo: sono uomini e donne dal sesso nascosto o evidenziato. Qua e là, sparsi in gironi danteschi, si scorgono mani, piedi e foreste di simboli fallici e vaginali, che potrebbero denotare ulteriori cambiamenti nell’immaginario dell’artista.

Margot (Francia, 1982) delinea a inchiostro costruzioni minuziose. Nella sua serie mitologica Corpus Templum, alla quale l’artista si è dedicata dal gennaio all’aprile del 2016, le porte (Porte d’Amounios e Porte d’Ailleurisse) 6

rappresentano le sue prime architetture, che parlano di un mondo dimenticato, protetto da guardiani misteriosi che ne posseggono le chiavi.

Nella partitura simmetrica e speculare delle opere si trova l’infinitamente piccolo e l’infinitamente grande, a seconda della scala moltiplicata e caleidoscopica in cui le si vuole leggere. Si avvertono la forza della natura e la potenza del numero; si percepisce, forse, anche un influsso dell’Oriente, in un’assonanza con templi in cui tutto è tranquillo e il tempo si è fermato.

Izabella Ortiz (Francia, 1964) trascende, attraverso il sogno – termine ricorrente nei titoli delle sue opere –, ciò che cattura e assorbe dalla vita; distilla quanto i materiali e le forme le sussurrano e lo rivolge sulla carta con pennellate raffinate e fluide, sottili come ombre. Le sue non sono mai visioni a priori, perché la visione stessa appare per lei nell’atto della pittura, in cui ritrova le sue radici.

Nella prima delle due opere a tecnica mista della serie surreale dei Foaming Dreams, i “sogni schiumosi” del 2015, l’artista rivisita la figura simbolica dell’ouroboros, il serpente che si mangia la coda. L’energia universale, che si consuma e si rinnova ciclicamente all’infinito, con un continuo inizio e un eterno ritorno, assume qui le forme di un rettile non perfettamente circolare.

La Ortiz si distacca evidentemente dall’iconografia, attestata anche dalla tradizione alchemica, per esprimere una creatura di grande forza, ondulata e labirintica, che forse galleggia su un magma primordiale e ingloba forme protozoiche, amebe ed embrioni.

Addensamenti serpentiformi si ritrovano anche nella seconda opera della stessa serie, nella quale le linee che si intrecciano fittamente potrebbero richiamare microcosmi vegetali: dalle liane delle foreste tropicali alle alghe del fondo marino.

Loba’s Dreams (Sogni di Loba) del 2014 si ispira, invece, alla lettura da parte dell’artista della leggenda di La Loba, nel saggio della psicanalista junghiana americana Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Donne che corrono con i lupi (Women Who Run With the Wolves, 1992). Le parole della scrittrice, quando afferma che una vita creativa significa “sapere come lasciare le cose come sono, senza censura” da parte del nostro intelletto o della società, riecheggiano nell’estetica della Ortiz.

La sua lupa, nella parte bassa del dipinto, riflette il personaggio sciamanico che 7

sviluppa forze intuitive (le figure nere allungate), segue l’invisibile e si trasforma in daimon: lo spirito-guida che accompagna l’archetipo della donna selvaggia in un mondo-tra-i-mondi, attraverso la pratica di atti creativi complessi.

Evelyne Postic (Francia, 1951) comunica, con la sua calligrafica tecnica a inchiostro, ciò che più la affascina, cioè le trasformazioni l’uno nell’altro di mondi biologici diversi. La confusione di un caos primigenio e l’adattamento delle specie marine, terrestri e invisibili variano continuamente e sono descritti con stilemi barocchi.

La costruzione delle opere dell’artista è molto complessa e oscilla tra contenuti di segno opposto. Nei Seeds of life (Semi di vita), del 2014, si notano la proliferazione della vita e la speranza, ma in My soul fell into a well (La mia anima è caduta in un pozzo), del 2016, la faccia in primo piano, nascosta dall’uccello che impedisce di vedere il quotidiano, denota un momento di depressione.

I have a warm heart (Ho un cuore caldo), del 2017, costituisce una sorta di summa: si tratta di una comunicazione, attraverso tutti gli atomi di cui siamo costituiti, tra due personaggi dall’aspetto tribale, uno maschile e uno femminile, che hanno gli organi vitali in comune. La donna possiede il cuore e l’uomo i polmoni, ma il loro legame osmotico pare ossessivo-nevrotico: la trasmissione avviene, nella parte alta, con una sorta di abbraccio per mezzo di un serpente mitologico e, nella parte bassa, con una estremità che contiene una creatura, forse il prodotto di un amore folle, l’origine della vita.

Davide Mansueto Raggio (Italia, 1926-2002) esorcizza le sofferenze interiori in sembianze distorte, forme zoomorfe e umanoidi, creature fantastiche di legno, paglia e cartone, che popolano un bosco immaginario, specchio di un perduto paradiso terrestre.

Autentico protagonista dell’Art Brut, fa nascere le proprie opere a dispetto della carenza di materiali, utilizzando tutto ciò che trova, supporti poveri e improvvisati. La sua artisticità si manifesta in special modo nei cartoni da imballo, che strappa sulla superficie, come nei lavori del 1995 e del 1998.

Qui la carta arrotolata si trasforma in mani e piedi, gli arti di figure cui Raggio 8

aggiunge occhi e bocche, così come li intaglia con pochi tratti nelle pirografie e nei bassorilievi su legno del 1992. Anche queste ultime opere manifestano, con il loro minimalismo, la fervida creatività dell’artista che, a partire da venature e macchie naturali, si dimostra capace di dar vita a un proprio mondo: il suo pare corrispondere al primo stadio della storia dell’uomo teorizzato da Giambattista Vico, quello dell’età degli dei, politeista e animista, guidato dai sensi e dalla fantasia.

Joskin Siljan (Serbia, 1953) crea un grande Book of Faces (Libro di Facce), una serie di opere su fogli di giornale dell’ex Jugoslavia degli anni ‘60 del periodo comunista, come Rad (Lavoro), Mladost (Gioventù) e Komunist (Comunista).

Si tratta di volti disegnati di getto, con uno stile immediato, e rappresentano la visione dell’arte da parte dell’artista: il disegno si disegna da solo, il processo creativo è primario – avviene nel momento dell’ispirazione, senza ragione – e l’opera d’arte è secondaria.

Così per Siljan l’opera d’arte è soltanto un segno sull’invisibile e richiede allo spettatore di continuare lui il processo di composizione, proprio per consentire a chi guarda di vedere se stesso attraverso l’arte. Allora si può riflettere sui cinque volti selezionati, tutti del 2017 (Small duck lass / Piccola anatra; Our comrade without the plow / Il nostro compagno senza l’aratro; Lightheaded comrade: Clubber comrade – long live me! / Compagno dalla testa leggera: compagno del Clubber - lunga vita a me!; Comrade & Brother & The one with big balls / Compagno e Fratello e Quello con grandi palle): le pennellate selettive si sovrappongono agli inchiostri tipografici, li lasciano affiorare o li cancellano, liberamente citando, forse in modo in parte inconsapevole, movimenti d’avanguardia.

Julia Sisi (Argentina, 1957) riporta a inchiostro e acrilico su sfondo nero la sua esperienza ipnagogica, che appartiene allo stato di transizione tra veglia e sonno: in tale “soglia di coscienza” i pensieri si fanno lucidi e allucinati. L’artista racconta che, la notte del 30 gennaio 2017, fece un sogno ipnagogico, cioè stava disegnando con la luce e usava le mani per creare forme con un raggio fluido di luce rossa, sullo sfondo nero della notte. La mattina dopo, è andata al suo 9

atelier e ha iniziato a disegnare i suoi sogni. Dodici mesi più tardi, sta ancora disegnando questi sogni illuminati, che possono rimandare a suggestioni psichedeliche e apparire come graffiti dell’anima.

Hidden Way (La via nascosta) è la terza opera (finita il 13 febbraio 2017) della serie Hypnagogia ed è una riflessione personale su come l’identità umana si dissolva in connessione con la Natura. Affiorano tanti termini chiave e, se l’artista si chiede “how long / the way is” (quanto è lunga la via), in un altro senso di lettura possiamo scorgere la sua risposta: “the way is / time” (la via è tempo).

La lentezza permette l’approfondimento e, a un tempo lungo di costruzione dell’opera, corrisponderebbe un altrettanto tempo lungo di comprensione della stessa.

Silence (Silenzio) (finita il 15 marzo 2017), invece, si riferisce alla casa in cui vive l’artista nel centro della Francia, molto vicina a un piccolo fiume. Ogni giorno lei si siede sulle rocce in mezzo all’acqua che scorre, in silenzio, e ascolta. Qui i corridoi spazio-temporali che apre l’opera sono ancora più evidenti.

Se in quest’ultimo caso viene dichiarato che “it’s a matter of time” (è una questione di tempo) e la “silent eloquence” (eloquenza silente) contrasta o è conseguenza del “too much to say” (troppo da dire), le catene di sensi indotte e dedotte sono davvero comuni a tutti i protagonisti della mostra.

Essi travalicano le grandi categorie di astratto e figurativo, si lasciano definitivamente alle spalle i movimenti e gli -ismi dell’arte del secolo scorso, per abbracciare una dimensione ben più ampia. Nel nuovo millennio, i confini tra culture diverse sono significativamente sempre più labili, mentre il linguaggio espressivo esalta le caratteristiche specifiche dell’esperienza individuale.

Il melting pot naturale sembra ora favorire uno scambio sempre maggiore tra la cultura accademica dell’arte (in) e l’espressione libera e spontanea (out), fino a che potranno entrambe, con le loro interessantissime derivazioni, finalmente incontrarsi. Per immaginare, insieme, altri mondi.

Imagining other worlds The new maps in art Linda Kaiser The theme I have identified in the exhibition, Imaginary Maps. Representations of (im)possible worlds, concerns the delimitation or the elimination of the confines that represent the survival of our civilization.

Through the works of visionary outsider, marginal and self-taught artists, perhaps still unknown, with their talent yet to be appreciated, but carefully selected on the international scene, the public is presented with a reflection on insider and outsider, integration and exclusion in art, a mirror of our society.

The works of artists such as Kuffjca Cozma (Moldavia), Margot, Izabella Ortiz, Evelyne Postic (France), Davide Mansueto Raggio (Italy), Joskin Siljan (Serbia) and Julia Sisi (Argentina) can today represent those new visions of the imagination that emerge from the meanders of the mind, true passages of “other” meaning, channels that breach all pre-established confines.

The maps of labyrinthine worlds exhibited on this occasion traces original paths, guiding the observer through a slow and reflective reading of art, understood as both formal practice and abstract thought.

Slowness is the key to the exhibition laid out in Ducale Spazio Aperto, a symbolic name for a physical space overlooking Palazzo Ducale’s Cortile Maggiore. One usually reaches the Palazzo via the city’s lanes, an urban labyrinth metaphorically reflecting the labyrinthine mind of its people. There are many and diverse “escape routes”, at times all it takes is to raise one’s eyes and observe the splintered sky between the buildings.

The artists in question here also offer myriad possibilities and without doubt they all invite us to go beyond the restricted, delimited space of the sheets of paper or wooden panels on which they express themselves. Each of them cultivates their own obsessions, but none appear to settle for a “superficial” surface; all seem to be searching for an “other” and different extension in which 11

the room no longer has walls and the secret garden becomes enchanted.

All self-taught, each of these artists has come to art in unusual ways, as a result of exceptional events that have marked them: Cozma and Siljan, for example, had accidents, while there are those who have had health or family problems like Ortiz and Postic. Margot and Sisi instead have decided to abandon their professions, while Raggio was attacked deep within himself.

However, despite belonging to very different worlds, cultures, ethnic groups and experiences, they have all poured into their work an imagination with an expressive language seemingly based on a common line that suggests an overall reading that might reveal a continuity, a fil rouge of destiny.

For Kuffjca Cozma (Moldavia, 1962), in the room in which she has to live following a serious accident at work, drawing is a breath of freedom, her work a sedimented construction of abstract forms in continuous evolution.

Her drawing is a form of automatic writing, a spontaneous, continual flow of signs that compose themselves in concentric or spiral forms. From the more or less stratified marks of the works in black and white, with expressions in the Romanian language (And I’ve felt and very), the artist is seamlessly moving to her first experiments with colour.

Her world appears more joyous in the two most recent works, from the summer of 2017 (And maybe people will surprise us; And we live), in which stylised human figures appear enclosed (defended?) in bubbles, floating in the complex amalgam: men and women of concealed or highlighted sex. Here and there, scattered in Dantesque circles, we can see hands, feet and forests of phallic and vaginal symbols that might well denote further changes in the artist’s imagery.

Margot (France, 1982), delineates meticulous constructions in ink. In her mythological series Corpus Templum, to which the artist devoted herself from January to April 2016, the doors (Porte Amounios and Porte Ailleurisse) represent her first architecture and speak of a forgotten world, protected by mysterious guardians who possess the keys.

The symmetrical and mirror-image composition of the works contains the infinitely small and the infinitely large, depending upon the multiplied and 12

kaleidoscopic scale by which one chooses to read them. One notes the force of nature and the power of numbers; one also perhaps perceives the influence of the East, in an assonance with temples in which all is tranquil and time has stopped.

Izabella Ortiz (France, 1964) transcends, through dream – a recurrent term in the titles of her works – that which she captures and absorbs of life; she distils what the materials and the forms whisper to her and pours it onto paper with sophisticated, fluid brushstrokes as slim as shadows. Hers are never a priori visions, because the vision itself appears to her in the act of creation, in which she rediscovers her roots.

In the first of the two mixed-media works in the surreal series of the Foaming Dreams from 2015, the artist revisits the symbolic figure of the ouroboros, the serpent that eats its own tail. The universal energy, which is consumed and renewed cyclically ad infinitum, with a continual beginning and an eternal return, here takes the form of an imperfectly circular reptile. Ortiz clearly breaks away from the iconography of the alchemical tradition in order to express a creature of great strength, undulating and labyrinthine, which perhaps floats on a primordial magma and subsumes protozoic forms, amoebas and embryos.

Serpentine agglomerations are also found in the second work of the same series in which the lines that densely interweave might recall vegetal microcosms: from the lianas of the tropical forests to the algae of the seabed.

The Loba’s Dreams from 2014 is instead inspired by the artist’s reading of the legend of La Loba in the essay by the American Jungian analyst Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves from 1992. The writer’s words, when she states that a creative life means “to know how to let things as they are, uncensored” by our intellect or by society, are echoed in Ortiz’s aesthetic. Her wolf, in the lower part of the painting, reflects the shamanic character that develops intuitive strengths (the elongated black figures), follows the invisible and transforms into a daimon; the spirit-guide that accompanies the archetype of the savage woman in a world-between-worlds, through the practice of complex creative acts.

Evelyne Postic (France, 1951) communicates, with her calligraphic technique in ink, that which most fascinates her, the transformation from one to another of different biological worlds. The confusion of a primordial chaos and the adaptation of marine, terrestrial and invisible species vary continuously and are described with baroque motifs.

The construction of the artist’s works is very complex and oscillates between contents of opposing poles. In Seeds of life from 2014, one notes the proliferation of life and hope, but in My soul fell into a well from 2016, the face in the foreground, hidden by the bird that impedes vision of everyday life, denotes a moment of depression.

I have a warm heart from 2017 constitutes a kind of summa: it is a communication, through all the atoms of which we are composed, between two figures of a tribal appearance, a male and a female, who share vital organs. The woman possesses the heart and the man the lungs, but their osmotic connection appears obsessive-neurotic: the transmission takes place, in the upper part, with a kind of embrace by means of a mythological serpent and, in the lower part, through an extremity that contains a creature, perhaps the product of an amour fou, the origin of life.

Davide Mansueto Raggio (Italy, 1926-2002) exorcise internal sufferings through distorted features, zoomorphic and humanoid forms, fantastic creatures in wood, straw and cardboard, which populate an imaginary forest, mirroring a lost terrestrial paradise.

An authentic master of Art Brut, Raggio created his works despite a lack of materials, using anything he could lay his hands on, impoverished and improvised supports. His artistry emerges most powerfully in the works in packaging cardboard, the surface of which he tore away, as in the pieces from 1995 and 1998.

Here the curling paper transforms into hands and feet, the limbs of figures to which Raggio added eyes and mouths, as he carved with just a few gestures in the pyrographs and low reliefs in wood from 1992. These last works also manifest, in their minimalism, the fervid creativity of the artist who, starting out with the natural veining and marks, proves capable of giving life to a world 14

all his own: a world that appears to correspond to the first stage of the history of man theorised by Giambattista Vico, that of the age of the gods, polytheist and animist, guided by the senses and by imagination.

Joskin Siljan (Serbia, 1953) has created a great Book of Faces, a series of works on sheets of newspaper from the former Yugoslavia of the 1960s communist period, such as Rad (Work), Mladost (Youth) and Komunist (Communist). The faces are drawn rapidly with great immediacy and represent the artist’s vision of art; the drawing draws itself, the creative process is primary – it occurs at the moment of inspiration, without rationale – and the work of art is secondary.

For Siljan the work of art is therefore merely a sign on the invisible and requires the observer to continue the process of composition in order to allow them to see themselves through art. One can therefore reflect on the five faces selected, all from 2017 (Small duck; Our comrade without a plough; Lightheaded comrade; Clubber comrade – long live me!; Comrade & Brother & The one with big balls): the selective brushstrokes are superimposed over the printing inks, allow them to emerge or cancel them, freely citing, perhaps in a partially unwitting manner, certain avant-garde movements.

Julia Sisi (Argentina, 1957) uses ink and acrylics on black grounds to record her hypnagogic experience that belongs to the transitional state between waking and sleep: in this “threshold of consciousness” thoughts can be lucid and disoriented. The artist recounts that on the night of 30 January 2017 she had a hypnagogic dream that she was drawing with light, using her hands to create forms with a fluid ray of red light, against the black backdrop of the night. The following morning she went to her studio and began drawing her dreams. 12 months later, she is still drawing these illuminated dreams, which might point us in the direction of psychedelia and appear as graffiti of the spirit.

Hidden Way is the third work (finished on 13 February 2017) in the series Hypnagogia and is a personal reflection on how human identity dissolves in contact with nature. Numerous keywords appear and while the artist asks “how long / the way is”, we might intuit her own reply in another way of reading: “the way is / time”. to make, comprehension of the same should correspond to a similar length of time.

Silence (finished on 15 March 2017) instead refers to the house in which the artist lives in the centre of France, very close to a small river. Every day she sits on the rocks in the middle of the flowing water, in silence, and listens. Here the spatial-temporal corridors the work opens are even more evident.

If in this case it is declared that “it’s a matter of time” and the “silent eloquence” contrasts with or is a consequence of the “too much to say”, the chains of meanings induced and deduced are truly shared by all the protagonists in this exhibition.

They go beyond the great categories of abstract and figurative, they leave definitively behind them the movements and the isms of the last century to embrace a much broader dimension. In the new millennium, the confines between different cultures are increasingly and significantly more unstable, while the expressive language exalts the specific characteristics of individual experience.

The natural melting pot now seems to favour ever more frequent exchanges between the academic culture of art (in) and free and spontaneous expression (out), to the point where both, with all their fascinating derivations, may finally meet. To imagine, together, other worlds.

Kuffjca Cozma I was born in 1962 in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, a Russian enclave of the Republic of Moldavia. My mother is Romanian and my father is Russian.

Until the age of 16 I lived in Romania and then I came back to my hometown, where I finished my studies and obtained a diploma in Accounting.

In the meantime, I was obliged by my family to work for economic reasons. My father, who had returned to live with my mother, decided that I had to work for the Moldavian State Railways.

As a ticket collector I began to feel myself important and, at the age of 18, I even found the time to draw on recycled papers that I destroyed, as soon as I filled them completely.

My life changed suddenly at the age of 23, in 1985, while working on the train to Chișinău: at the opening of the door I was involved in the collision between a locomotive and another train. The accident left me between life and death, causing me permanent physical injuries.

The trauma hurt me from all points of view and I spent my next life – supported by the invalidity pension – in loneliness, in a small apartment in Tiraspol, from which I rarely emerge.

For me drawing was an activity to which I didn’t attach great importance at the beginning. The signs, that I automatically repeat, are all I can do to occupy the time, even if I often get tired.

Recently, I have been happy to be appreciated by someone who sees my works, which I no longer cast away. Now I have received new paper, materials and colours and I seem to build different shapes, but I don’t want to be exhibited in shows where there are people who are perhaps better than me.

Kuffjca Cozma, 1985 Ho vissuto fino a 16 anni in Romania e poi sono ritornata nella mia città di origine, dove ho terminato gli studi, ottenendo un diploma in Computisteria.

Intanto, per motivi economici, fui costretta dalla mia famiglia a lavorare. Mio padre, tornato a vivere con mia madre, decise che io lavorassi presso le Ferrovie dello Stato moldavo.

Come bigliettaia iniziai a sentirmi importante e, a 18 anni, riuscii persino a trovare il tempo per disegnare su fogli di riciclo che, appena riempiti, poi distruggevo.

La mia esistenza cambiò bruscamente a 23 anni, quando, nel 1985, in servizio sul treno per Chișinău, all’apertura della porta venni coinvolta nello scontro tra una locomotiva e un altro treno. L’incidente mi condusse tra la vita e la morte, causandomi lesioni permanenti a livello fisico.

Il trauma mi ferì da tutti i punti di vista e trascorsi la mia vita successiva – sorretta dalla pensione di invalidità – in solitudine, in un piccolo appartamento di Tiraspol, dal quale esco raramente.

Il disegno diventò per me un’attività alla quale non diedi inizialmente grande importanza. I segni, che ripeto in maniera automatica, sono tutto quello che so fare per occupare il tempo, anche se spesso mi stanco.

Di recente, sono stata felice di essere apprezzata da qualcuno che vede le mie opere, che non getto più via. Adesso, che ho ricevuto nuovi fogli, materiali e colori, mi sembra di costruire forme diverse, ma non desidero essere esposta in mostre dove ci sono persone forse migliori di me.

Margot My name is Margot (my artist’s name), my real name being Marjorie Dohogne.

I was born on 25 July 1982. I am 35.

I started drawing in October 2014. I live in the countryside with my parents (not far from my sister and brother).

As a child, I already used to draw a lot. Then school came along, I studied to become a florist and, at that time, I stopped drawing. Indeed, I was coming into this working world with all its pre-established codes. I was in the mould.

By 2009, I was managing my own flower shop. For five years, I worked with passion to succeed in this professional project.

On July 1st, 2014, I took the decision to stop, as my economical working situation couldn’t allow me to carry on.

The next step was a complete new start.

I changed home and place. I came back to where I grew up, among my family.

This was not at all easy for me.

A few months later, I took a black pen, a piece of paper and everything came back and came out! Everything my eyes caught, recorded, everything my soul has seen since my first day on earth.

I draw every day, from early morning to late at night. I don’t look for an explanation for what is happening to me. I just know that I have to do it.

Drawing has become my way of being in this world. With time, I realised that the moment had come to accomplish things my way.

Since then I’ve never travelled so much… inside my thoughts. The next pages of my story are waiting to be Margot, Porte d’Ailleurisse written.

Ho 35 anni. Ho iniziato a disegnare nell’ottobre 2014. Vivo in campagna con i miei genitori (non lontano da mia sorella e mio fratello).

Da bambina, ero solita disegnare già molto. Poi è arrivata la scuola, ho studiato per diventare una fiorista e, a quel tempo, ho smesso di disegnare. Anzi, stavo entrando in questo mondo del lavoro con tutti i suoi codici prestabiliti. Ero inquadrata.

Entro il 2009, gestivo il mio negozio di fiori. Per cinque anni, ho lavorato con passione per riuscire in questo progetto professionale.

Il 1° luglio 2014, ho preso la decisione di fermarmi, dato che la mia situazione economica lavorativa non poteva permettermi di andare avanti.

Il passo successivo è stato un inizio completamente nuovo.

Ho cambiato casa e luogo. Sono tornata dove sono cresciuta, nella mia famiglia.

Non è stato affatto facile per me.

Pochi mesi dopo, ho preso una penna nera, un pezzo di carta e tutto è tornato ed è uscito! Tutto ciò che i miei occhi hanno catturato, registrato, tutto ciò che la mia anima ha visto dal mio primo giorno sulla terra.

Disegno ogni giorno, dalla mattina presto alla sera tardi. Non cerco una spiegazione per quello che mi sta succedendo. So soltanto che devo farlo.

Il disegno è diventato il mio modo di essere in questo mondo. Con il tempo, ho capito che era arrivato il momento di realizzare le cose a modo mio.

Da allora non ho mai viaggiato così tanto... all’interno dei miei pensieri. Le prossime pagine della mia storia stanno aspettando di essere scritte

Izabella Ortiz Born in France, 28/11/1964.

My mother is Australian and my father French-Colombian and, as a child, I lived in France, in Australia and also in Alaska. My painting is impregnated with Inuit, Aboriginal and Indian myths, tales and legends.

Art came to life in an unexpected way. One evening in 2009, like a sleepwalker I grabbed a painting I had at home and painted over it. Since then I have been producing in a compulsive way.

This “trance painting” loomed up after a lung illness and has become vital to me. I have become what I am.

Most titles contain the word “dream” because for me our roots grow in our dreams.

My dreams are my capacity of transcending everything I intercept, absorb, everything that impregnates me for me to better spill it all out when creating.

All my paintings are “automatic” and therefore take life directly on the paper: forms and materials whisper to me what to do.

L’arte ha preso vita in modo inaspettato. Una sera del 2009, come una sonnambula, ho afferrato un dipinto che avevo a casa e ci ho dipinto sopra. Da allora ho prodotto in maniera compulsiva.

Questa “pittura in trance” si è profilata dopo una malattia polmonare ed è diventata vitale per me. Sono diventata quello che sono.

La maggior parte dei titoli contiene la parola “sogno”, perché per me le nostre radici crescono nei nostri sogni.

I miei sogni sono la mia capacità di trascendere tutto ciò che intercetto e assorbo, ogni elemento che mi impregna per farmi meglio riversare tutto fuori quando creo.

Tutti i miei dipinti sono “automatici” e quindi prendono vita direttamente sulla carta: forme e materiali mi sussurrano che cosa fare.

Evelyne Postic I was born as Mazaloubaud in 1951 at the Hôtel-Dieu, Lyon, France. I am selftaught.

My first passion, dancing, was a dream erased by a serious lung disease at the age of 5 and by the separation of my parents at the same time. The placements in various children’s homes that followed have left me suffering from a feeling of abandonment ever since.

In a stifling life divided between my grandparents and my mother, the first moments of breakout came with paper and coloured pencils, on the kitchen table; through the window, I could see every day the dyeing house opposite, that let its coloured waters drain into the gutter.

Bored at school... the fine arts? My mother was opposed to the idea.

After my divorce, I moved to Grenoble with my three children and as an escape from the burdens of everyday life I invented a parallel world and began to paint and draw forms in which the human, the vegetable and the animal combine and merge.

I work on the adaptation of living beings to their environment, the evolution of species that transform themselves to survive.

The infinite variety of forms of the marine, terrestrial and invisible worlds fascinates me.

Like a river held back for too long, I create tirelessly in the evening, while during the day I work at odd jobs to earn a living.

grave malattia polmonare all’età di 5 anni e dalla separazione dei miei genitori allo stesso tempo. Le sistemazioni in diverse case per bambini che ne conseguirono mi hanno lasciata, da allora, sofferente di un senso di abbandono.

In una vita soffocante divisa tra i miei nonni e mia madre, i primi momenti di evasione vennero con carta e matite colorate, sul tavolo della cucina; attraverso la finestra, potevo vedere ogni giorno la tintoria di fronte, che lasciava scaricare le sue acque colorate nel canale di scolo.

Annoiata a scuola... le belle arti? Mia madre era contraria all’idea.

Dopo il mio divorzio, mi sono trasferita a Grenoble con i miei tre figli e, per sfuggire al peso della vita quotidiana, ho inventato un mondo parallelo e ho iniziato a dipingere e disegnare forme, nelle quali l’umano, il vegetale e l’animale si combinano e si fondono.

Lavoro sull’adattamento degli esseri viventi al loro ambiente, sull’evoluzione delle specie che si trasformano per sopravvivere.

L’infinita varietà di forme dei mondi marino, terrestre e invisibile mi affascina.

Come un fiume trattenuto da troppo tempo, creo instancabilmente alla sera, mentre durante il giorno faccio lavori occasionali per guadagnarmi da vivere.

La biologia e la scienza mi affascinano.

Davide Mansueto Raggio Davide Mansueto Raggio was born on June 26, 1926 in Celesia, San Colombano Certenoli, near Genoa, into a farming family. His father, Davide, died three months earlier.

During the Second World War his experience of imprisonment (1944-45) had deep consequences for him and was the origin of his psychic troubles.

These troubles got worse during the period he spent in Argentina (1952-1956), at the time of the Perón regime, where he joined his brother Achille Pellegro, who emigrated there in 1950. In the mid-50s, Raggio was involved in the events that led to Perón’s fall and he was interned in a psychiatric prison from which his brother managed to have him released one year later.

Back in Italy in June 1956, Raggio showed growing symptoms of mental instability and was to be admitted to the Quarto psychiatric hospital (Genoa), where he was to spend the last 46 years of his life. Here he began to paint and to collect roots and acorns with which he created necklaces and baskets.

His true artistic awakening was due to a meeting with Claudio Costa, in 1985.

From then on Raggio expressed elements of a mythical and magical world, charged with symbolic and archaic suggestions. He painted works with wax crayons; built large installations and interweaved roots, acorns and other materials to create the characters he called “le furie” (the furies); he also started the series of the “Pinocchi”, made out of bamboo canes, nuts and roots held together by a metallic spring; he made extensive use of clay and of small pieces of brick glued together, referring to these as “sassi matti” that is, crazy stones; he also used ashes from cigarettes that he pasted together with glue, but became famous for his “rips”, small pieces of cardboard box, into the surface of which he scratched and pulled out human and animal shapes.

Questi problemi peggiorarono durante il periodo trascorso in Argentina (1952-1956), al tempo del regime di Perón, dove raggiunse suo fratello Achille Pellegro, emigrato là nel 1950. Alla metà degli anni ’50, Raggio fu coinvolto negli eventi che portano alla caduta di Perón e fu internato in una prigione psichiatrica, dalla quale suo fratello cercherà di farlo rilasciare un anno dopo.

Di ritorno in Italia nel giugno 1956, Raggio mostrò sintomi crescenti di instabilità mentale e fu ricoverato nell’ospedale psichiatrico di Quarto (Genova), dove avrebbe trascorso gli ultimi 46 anni della sua vita. Qui iniziò a dipingere e a raccogliere radici e ghiande, con le quali creava collane e cestini.

Il suo vero risveglio artistico fu dovuto a un incontro con Claudio Costa, nel 1985. Da quel momento in poi Raggio espresse elementi di un mondo mitico e magico, carico di suggestioni simboliche e arcaiche. Dipinse opere con pastelli a cera; costruì grandi installazioni e intrecciò radici, ghiande e altro materiale per realizzare i personaggi che chiamava “le furie”; iniziò anche la serie dei “Pinocchi”, realizzati con canne di bambù, noci e radici, tenuti insieme da una 43

molla metallica; fece largo uso di argilla e di piccoli pezzi di mattoni incollati insieme, riferendosi a questi come “sassi matti”, cioè pietre pazze; usò anche la cenere delle sigarette, che appiccicava insieme con la colla, ma divenne famoso per i suoi “strappi”, piccoli pezzi di scatola di cartone, la cui superficie graffiava per estrarre forme umane e animali.

Il 22 maggio 2002 Raggio morì nell’ospedale di Recco (Genova).

Gran parte del suo lavoro fu distrutto prima che il suo genio artistico fosse riconosciuto. Ciò che è rimasto si può trovare nelle più importanti gallerie d’Art Brut e nei musei di tutto il mondo, come la Collezione dell’Art Brut a Losanna e, principalmente, nell’Istituto per le Materie e le Forme Inconsapevoli (IMFI) a Genova-Quarto, l’unico Museo di Outsider Art in Italia.

Joskin Siljan My name is Joskin Siljan, an artist from Grdelica, Serbia. I was born 28.03.1953 in Pirot, Serbia, as Nebojsa Stojkovic. I always enjoyed painting and poetry, but decided to follow in my father’s footsteps (he was a land surveyor) and became a road construction engineer. When my son was born in 1987, I had an accident and badly cut my right arm, ending up in hospital for months. The doctors told me that I would never be able to use my right arm again for anything but basic movements, and that I should find a hobby that would keep my arm active. So I started drawing and painting again to keep my arm alive.

At the same time, the political situation in Serbia (Yugoslavia, at the time) was getting worse. The prospect of civil war was getting closer, political repression was starting to grow, and I found my safe place in art. The civil war soon started and I lost my job for political reasons, and my wife lost her job because of economic inflation.

Creating art was my way out of all that madness. I enjoyed it so much that I was spending every available moment creating. The 90’s were a bad time to live in Serbia, so I was using anything I could to create. I would draw on newspapers, postcards, wood, stone, practically anything I could get my hands on.

The bombings of 1999 were a turning point in my artistic career. I was extremely productive as I used art as my shelter, and after that I connected with a lot of artists that did the same. This led to many group exhibitions, new connections, and getting recognized on the national and international level. It was also a turning point in Serbian history as Milosevic’s regime was overthrown the next year, and I got a job after 10 years which allowed me to invest more into my art and get to experiment and educate myself.

As I evolved as a person, I was evolving as an artist as well. I started exhibiting 52

Sono nato il 28.03.1953 a Pirot, in Serbia, come Nebojsa Stojkovic. Mi sono sempre piaciute la pittura e la poesia, ma decisi di seguire i passi di mio padre (era un Joskin Siljan, 2015 agrimensore) e divenni un © Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art (MNMA), Jagodina ingegnere stradale. Quando mio figlio nacque nel 1987, ebbi un incidente e mi ferii gravemente il braccio destro, finendo in ospedale per mesi. I medici mi dissero che non avrei mai più potuto usare di nuovo il mio braccio destro per altro che per movimenti di base, e che avrei dovuto trovare un hobby che mantenesse attivo il mio braccio. Così iniziai di nuovo a disegnare e a dipingere per mantenere vivo il mio braccio.

Allo stesso tempo, la situazione politica in Serbia (Jugoslavia, all’epoca) stava peggiorando. La prospettiva della guerra civile si stava avvicinando, la repressione politica stava iniziando a crescere, e trovai il mio posto sicuro nell’arte. La guerra civile presto iniziò e io persi il lavoro per motivi politici, e mia moglie perse il lavoro a causa dell’inflazione economica.

Creare arte fu la mia via di uscita da quella follia. Mi piaceva così tanto che trascorrevo ogni momento disponibile creando. Gli anni ’90 sono stati un brutto periodo per vivere in Serbia, così usavo qualsiasi cosa potessi per creare.

Disegnavo su giornali, cartoline, legno, pietra, praticamente su tutto ciò su cui potevo mettere le mani.

artistica. Ero estremamente produttivo, perché usavo l’arte come mio rifugio, e in seguito a ciò ho preso contatti con molti artisti che facevano lo stesso. Questo ha portato a numerose mostre collettive, a nuove connessioni e riconoscimenti a livello nazionale e internazionale. È stato anche un punto di svolta nella storia serba, dato che il regime di Milosevic fu rovesciato l’anno successivo, e dopo 10 anni ho trovato un lavoro che mi ha permesso di investire di più nella mia arte e di sperimentare ed educare me stesso.

Nel momento in cui mi sono evoluto come persona, mi stavo evolvendo anche come artista. Ho iniziato a esporre a un livello locale e in rete con altri artisti.

Dopo un po’ stavo facendo mostre e ottenendo premi a livello nazionale, e seguirono i premi e le mostre internazionali.

Julia Sisi I was born on September 7th 1957, in an small rural town in Argentina, South America. My mother was Spanish, and my father was a descendant of Guarani aborigines. In 1981, fleeing from the military dictatorship that dominated my native country, I settled in Catalonia, North Spain, with my partner. After very hard years as undocumented immigrants, finally we established a successful antique shop in the city of Girona.

At these times, both of us were already making art, but we were not exhibiting, it was a private activity. In 2003, when I was 46 years old, we felt unhappy with that kind of life, and we decided to close our antique shop and to move to the Canary Islands to live as full time artists. There, I started to show my works on the internet.

Surprisingly soon, I was contacted by American and European artists who invited me to participate with them in group shows, and the dream of living as Sisi, 2017 - Š Dan Casado full time artist came true. Now, my nomadic life has brought me to France, were I live with my partner Dan and our cat Tina, in an old house on the edges of a quiet village, surrounded by grasslands, forests and creeks.

Nel 1981, in fuga dalla dittatura militare che dominava il mio paese natale, mi trasferii in Catalogna, nel Sisi, 2017 - © Linda Kaiser nord della Spagna, con il mio compagno. Dopo anni durissimi come immigrati senza documenti, finalmente aprimmo un negozio di antiquariato di successo nella città di Girona.

In quei tempi, entrambi stavamo già facendo arte, ma non stavamo facendo mostre, era un’attività privata. Nel 2003, quando avevo 46 anni, ci sentimmo insoddisfatti di quel tipo di vita e decidemmo di chiudere il nostro negozio di antiquariato e di trasferirci nelle Isole Canarie per vivere come artisti a tempo pieno. Lì ho iniziato a mostrare i miei lavori su Internet.

Sorprendentemente presto, fui contattata da artisti americani ed europei, che mi invitarono a partecipare con loro a mostre collettive, e il sogno di vivere come artista a tempo pieno si avverò. Ora, la mia vita nomade mi ha portato in Francia, dove vivo con il mio compagno Dan e la nostra gatta Tina, in una vecchia casa ai margini di un villaggio tranquillo, circondato da pascoli, foreste e ruscelli.
