JAMSU

K-beauty has taken the world by storm over the last few years…and for good reason. From products to beauty techniques, there’s something to appeal to everyone. This month, we tried a trend called jamsu, roughly translating to “to submerge,” which involves plunging your made-up face into cool water. Apply your foundation, concealer, contouring, and blush as you normally would (leaving out eye makeup, which you’ll do after), then cover your face with a generous layer of loose translucent or baby powder. Go ahead and dunk your entire face into a sink or bowl of cool water for 15 to 30 seconds. Gently pat your face dry with a towel, being careful not to smudge. The cool water helps to shrink pores and set makeup. Best suited to oilier skin types, jamsu results in a seamlessly blended, matte finish that lasts all day.

STUFFED ROAST TURKEY WITH HONEY & BEET GLAZE MAKES 8 TO 12 SERVINGS HANDS-ON TIME 1 HOUR TOTAL TIME 18 HOURS

Brined Turkey 6 cups boiling water 1 cup pickling salt 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup pickling spices 4 cloves garlic, crushed 3 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 sage leaves 10 cups ice water 1 whole turkey (about 5 kg) Millet & Sage Stuffing (recipe, page 91) Honey & Beet Glaze 1 cup liquid honey 1/2 cup beet juice 1/2 cup salted butter, cubed 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 clove garlic, finely chopped Brined Turkey In large saucepan of boiling water, add salt, brown sugar and spices; stir until salt is dissolved. Remove from heat and add garlic, rosemary and sage. Let cool slightly. In large stockpot (large enough to hold whole turkey) or in very large resealable plastic bag placed in cooler or bucket, combine brine liquid and ice water. Let cool completely, about 1 hour. Remove neck and giblets from turkey (discard or reserve for another use). Place turkey in brine, cover and refrigerate for 12 hours.

Honey & Beet Glaze In small saucepan, combine honey, beet juice, butter, soy sauce and garlic. Bring to a boil. Remove saucepan from heat and stir until butter is melted. Filter through sieve placed over bowl. Discard garlic and clumps. Refrigerate and set aside. (Make-ahead: Can be stored in airtight container and refrigerated overnight.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Pour 1 cup water into bottom of large roasting pan; set aside. Remove turkey from brine, rinse and pat dry with paper towels; discard brine. Loosely pack cavity of turkey with Millet & Sage 6WẊQJ 7LH OHJV WRJHWKHU ZLWK EXWFKer’s twine. Secure wings on back using small skewers, if desired. Place turkey, breast side up, on greased rack in roasting pan; brush with 1/4 cup Honey & Beet Glaze. Roast, brushing turkey with 1/4 cup glaze every 30 minutes (cover with foil if browning too quickly), until instant-read thermometer inserted in thickest part of breast reads 180°F, about 3 1/2 to KRXUV 7UDQVIHU WXUNH\ WR VHUYLQJ platter. Loosely tent turkey with foil; let stand 20 minutes before carving. Serve with White Wine Gravy and Garlic Roasted Brussels Sprouts (see recipes, page 91). PER EACH OF 12 SERVINGS (INCLUDING MILLET & SAGE STUFFING) about 350 cal, 31 g pro, 12 g total fat (6 g sat. fat), 29 g carb (3 g dietary fibre, 7 g sugar), 110 mg chol, 350 mg sodium, 2.1 mg iron.

DITCH THE DULLNESS CUT & STYLE While regular visits to the salon can help to keep hair looking healthy, a cut can’t give your hair more shine. “The most beautiful, smooth bob won’t necessarily be shiny if the hair is dehydrated,” says master hairstylist Stéphan W, owner of Montreal boutique hair salon Stéphan W Atelier. The best way to make your tresses shine is to blow-dry them in small sections using a round brush to smooth each strand. You can even use a flatiron as the final touch. Don’t forget to apply a thermal protection product—an essential for any type of heat styling!

COLOUR We all notice how shiny a freshly coloured coif is. “To better reflect the light, opt for warm shades,” advises Lucie Michaud, chief technician and trainer for MDM Cosmetics. “Golds and coppers are naturally luminescent, while ashy tones are generally more matte,” she explains. COLOUR Since frizz generally appears when you have dehydrated hair, avoid aggressive bleaching, which tends to damage the hair and requires multiple applications to maintain the look. “Choose a shade no more than two shades lighter than your natural colour if you’re looking to lighten your hair,” advises the hair colour expert. TREATMENT “To treat frizz, you need to determine the cause of it,” says Michaud. “Is it humidity, static or, often, dehydration?” Depending on the analysis, you can act at the source. CLEANSE

There are four steps to the foundation of healthy skin: cleansing, hydrating, moisturizing and protecting. It all starts with clean skin to eliminate the buildup of oil, environmental pollutants, dirt and dead cells that weaken the skin barrier and cause blemishes and wrinkles. It’s important to choose a cleanser based on your skin type, according to Dr. Jean-Francois Tremblay, dermatologist and medical director at the MédiME clinic in Montreal. “Dry skin requires a soap-free cleanser or a moisturizing oil-water emulsion, while oily skin needs a more emulsifying waterbased cleanser, with salicylic acid, for example, to remove excess sebum and cleanse the pores.” If your skin is balanced, choose a cleanser for normal or sensitive skin so you don’t disrupt the balance you already have. Sensitive and reactive skin types should avoid gel and foam formulas with strong detergents. “Sometimes I recommend double cleansing for effectively getting rid of makeup and sunblock,” says Dr. Tremblay. “To double cleanse, start by removing makeup from your face with an oil-based treatment or micellar water, then cleanse it again with a water-based product to remove sweat, dirt and stubborn residue.”

The second step is to treat the skin with a serum: Its fluid texture is quickly absorbed to deliver active ingredients that target different skin issues. The last step is considered one of the most important by several experts: protection against UVA and UVB rays responsible for premature aging of the skin and cancer. Apply a broad spectrum sunblock SPF 30 or higher every day (and reapply every two hours!). Even if you stay indoors or it’s overcast; UVA rays are present all year round and pass through clouds and windows. The good news is that with new products on the market, you can sometimes merge steps three and four to save time. But is it as effective? “You should prioritize the application of sunblock,” says Jennifer Brodeur, founder and CEO of sustainable skin-care

perfect balance 1 Have you noticed larger pores on your T-zone? “The epidermis is oilier on the T-zone than on the rest of the face because this zone contains twice as many sebaceous glands,” explains Catherine Gillotin, international director of training at Uriage. “It’s thanks to these glands that our hydrolipidic film exists and protects us from

harmful bacteria and other external aggressors.” But when these glands secrete too much sebum, blemishes— pimples, blackheads and large pores—start to appear. There are other factors, too, that can create larger pore size, such as pollution, an unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, alcohol and tobacco consumption, stress, inadequate skin care and heredity. Aging, which also causes sagging skin, is another culprit. “The pores become

distended, occupying an increasing surface area of the skin,” says Gillotin. And as if we needed another good reason to apply sunblock every day: UV rays can make the problem worse by damaging elastin and collagen fibres in our skin.

2 “It’s important to keep your pores free from excess sebum, harmful bacteria and impurities by cleansing your face twice a

day,” says Yoli Mata, aesthetician and skincare expert for beauty brand Tatcha, who also advises choosing products without fragrance that contain little or no oil, since oils can clog the pores. Taking advantage of the daily benefits of a tonic lotion with astringent properties will visibly reduce the appearance of pores. Make sure you exfoliating once or twice a week to remove dead skin. And lastly, always moisturize! “Try to avoid

comedogenic ingredients, such as synthetic waxes, silicones, mineral oils and other oils with a molecular weight heavier than sebum, which are not absorbed by the skin,” recommends Mata.

3 “Properly treating blackheads helps to minimize the appearance of large pores, prevent the onset of future irritations and blemishes, and regulate

sebum production,” says Mata. But is it a good idea to squeeze them yourself? Probably not. “We tend to remove only half of the blackhead, or squeeze so hard that it irritates the skin,” says Gillotin. Not to mention that our fingers and nails may harbour harmful microbes that can put you at risk of creating other imperfections on the skin. It’s always best to have an aesthetician or dermatologist take care of blackheads for you.

How to keep your lashes healthy Like all hair that grows on the human body, eyelashes have a natural life cycle of roughly eight to 10 weeks. The length of the cycle varies from person to person and can be affected by different factors: For example, it’s normal to lose more eyelashes during seasonal changes, hormonal fluctuations and stressful times. But there are steps you can take to preserve the health of your lashes.

1. Always avoid pulling lashes and rubbing the eye area.

2. Save the waterproof mascara for occasions when your face may get wet, as it’s often difficult to remove without rubbing.

3. Start using an eyelash serum that contains peptides, vitamin E, biotin and ceramides to support eyelash growth and nourishment.

4. Opt for an effective makeup remover, which allows you to remove even water-repellent makeup easily. Think of twophase formulas and micellar waters, as well as cleansing oils and balms.

Did you know that the market research industry is worth more than a trillion dollars? That’s a lot of cash being spent trying to figure out how to influence people. In the first of our 3-part Mind Your Money series, we’re diving into the ways marketers can sway buyers. TEXT STACY YANCHUK OLEKSY

Appealing to the emotions. Whether we like to admit it or not, we are emotional creatures, and many of our choices are based on how we feel. Some of the biggest feelings marketers make use of are belonging, status and fear. Think about some things you do to belong—for example, do you wear certain clothing or accessories to feel like part of a group? Do you sport bracelets with crystals and stones to feel as if you’re part 46 | CANADIAN LIVING OCTOBER 2021

2 Starting with a small commitment. If marketing can get you to make a small commitment, it’s likely to draw more business out of you. A small commitment can look like a free newsletter subscription or signing up to an email list. This commitment can get a little bigger with hassle-free returns, subscription boxes or free trials. 3 Targeting social media use. Every time you swipe and scroll, you’re giving a platform information that will help determine what to advertise to you. Social media can actually drive up your spending and reduce savings because it’s part of a culture that’s rife with consumption and comparison. A recent study focused

on users of a popular social media platform and the impact of social media on spending. Subjects were asked to spend time on the app and then go to an eBay-like auction site and bid on an iPad. Interestingly, participants with stronger social media networks bid up to 30 percent more than they would have paid had they had walked into the store to make the purchase.

4 Employing technology. Think about the last time you were talking to someone about a new product and within a day or two you had ads for that product on your news, email and social media feed. Companies can buy data from big GDWD FRPSDQLHV DQG QRWL¿FDWLRQV DUH QRW MXVW favours from companies you like to frequent. They collect your location at that point in time so that, once they’ve collected your device ID, you’ll likely notice increased advertising in your feeds.

Marketing initiatives can hone in on cultural spending expectations, such as shelling out three months’ salary for an engagement ring or buying a Mother’s Day gift. When you feel pressured to shop, consider challenging the situation and making a decision that works for your budget. Putting others before ourselves is a motto women live by every day. The problem with this mindset, though, is that it can build resentment, anger and frustration. We feel like we’re trapped and we don’t have the power to change our reality. It becomes LPSRVVLEOH WR ¿QG ODVWLQJ KDSSLQHVV ZKHQ our tanks are running on empty because we have ignored our internal voices or the messages our bodies are giving us regarding what we actually need. Instead, we simply plow through the day to get the to-do lists done and attend to whoever else needs us, while neglecting ourselves in the process.

IF IT DOESN’T FEEL GOOD, WHY DO WE KEEP DOING IT? Many of us do this because of faulty belief systems. First, then, we have to identify where these beliefs come from. From a young age, many generations of women have lived with the belief that WKH\ FRXOGQ¶W SRVVLEO\ SXW WKHPVHOYHV ¿UVW Traditionally, our societies have been maledominated, so it makes sense that in the past we were the caregivers, the stay-athomers, the ones to compromise and make peace at any cost. Perhaps we were told it is VHO¿VK WR ORRN DIWHU RXU RZQ QHHGV ZKHQ ZH had children in the house who depended on us. We’ve all been subject to these outmoded ideas passed down though our families. Sometimes it’s easiest to just keep repeating the pattern, giving it power, and other times

we may not even realize we’re taking on everyone else’s wants and needs because it’s become a habit. ,I \RX¶YH EHHQ OLYLQJ E\ WKLV ÀDZHG SHU ception, you need to ask yourself: Does it feel good? And just because someone else believes this to be true, does it need to be my truth? Is it possible that I can upgrade OLYH D PRUH HPSRZHUHG OLIH ¿OOHG ZLWK happiness? The answer is yes. However, in order to upgrade any belief system, you need to replace it with a new one. You need to reprogram your brain to believe a new truth, one that’s in alignment with your most happy and whole self.

USE POSITIVE TALK TO MAKE CARING FOR YOURSELF A PRIORITY. One powerful way to do this is through WKH XVH RI ḊUPDWLRQV $Q ḊUPDWLRQ used in the right way can allow us to adopt a new truth. We all know that words have the power to make us feel good or bad. $̇UPDWLRQV DUH RQH ZD\ ZH FDQ FKDQJH the dialogue we’re used to hearing.

EFFECTIVE WAYS TO USE AFFIRMATIONS.

1. Build “I am” or “I have” statements. For example: “I am worthy of making myself a priority.” “I am my best self when I take care of me first.” “I am nourished, full of love and energy, and I have time to replenish.”

2. Repeat these “I” statements throughout the day anytime the thought of not having enough time crops up or you notice the negative results of the pattern of neglecting your needs.

3. Feel gratitude. When we use the “I” statements, we feel with our hearts the gratitude of this new truth. It feels wonderful, so bring it into your heart centre. This will make the statement more believable to your subconscious mind, and you’ll begin to change the way you show up for yourself.

If you think of your body as energy, then you can understand that we need to replenish our energy every day. Many of us act as though we’re robots. We drain the tank and expect to still have patience, compassion and tolerance for everyone else. The truth is that the best version of you gets to come forward when you take care RI \RX ¿UVW :KHQ \RX QRXULVK \RXU RZQ energy, you have more energy for others. Not only does it feel good, but the people closest to you get the best version of you as ZHOO 6R LQ IDFW LW LV WKH RSSRVLWH RI VHO¿VK it is actually selfless. Our bodies were not meant to work nonstop. We’re designed to listen to our bodies and give them what they need. And for most, this is daily nourishment LQ WKH IRUP RI WKH LGHD ³:KDW ¿OOV \RXU FXS"´

THE FIRST STEP TOWARD POSITIVE CHANGE IS TO LET YOURSELF HAVE IT. *LYH \RXUVHOI SHUPLVVLRQ WR ¿JXUH RXW ZKDW nourishes you the most. Make a list (either written or mental) of all the things that make you feel good when you do them, the things that energize you. These could include walking outdoors, meditation, unplugging from technology, a bubble bath, journaling, exercising, eating healthy meals, reading or just a quiet time with a cup of tea. Encourage yourself to think of things you like to do, things that you can do daily to replenish. These don’t need to cost money or even take up too much time, but they can EH VR H̆HFWLYH LQ KRZ \RX IHHO HDFK GD\


DEVELOP A DAILY SELF-CARE PRACTICE— AND STICK TO IT. After that, the key is to create consistency with your form of self-love. This is where many of us fail. We might do these things once in a while, when we remember or when we have time. But in truth, to really make yourself a priority, this needs to be a daily habit, like brushing your teeth. Many people have found that developing morning and evening routines are some of the best ways to build sustainability around VHOI FDUH 7KH PDLQ EHQH¿W RI D PRUQLQJ routine is that you have the chance to take FDUH RI \RXUVHOI ¿UVW EHIRUH DQ\ XQSUHGLFW able things happen. It also gets you in a

positive frame of mind to start your day. Likewise, an evening routine is wonderful to settle yourself before sleep, to wind down after whatever stresses the day has brought. Here’s a tip: Monitor your self-care routines by setting a weekly intention down on paper and tracking the results. You can also book appointments in your calendar for “nourishment time.” This acts not only as a reminder but can also get you into the groove of consistently choosing yourself. After putting these into daily practice, get curious with a few things. Notice how your energy feels; notice how you might have more patience; notice that you actually might be smiling more.

They can also be pressed for a high-quality oil used for culinary and cosmetic purposes. Pumpkin seeds and their oil have been shown to have a beneficial effect on the prostate gland by inhibiting testosterone-induced enlargement. In addition to working for prostate health, the seeds contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which raises levels of the “happy” hormone, serotonin, in the brain, potentially easing depression.

With so much emphasis put on how the food we eat affects a person’s physique and energy level, it’s important not to lose sight of how it can also affect one’s state of mind. Here, we explore the link between food and mental health, and how the digestive process directly influences your mood. TEXT EMILY KICHLER, RD

aving lived through a global pandemic, it’s safe to say it’s been a tough year and a half for most Canadians. Anxiety, loneliness and social isolation, uncertainty, fear of the virus, online learning, job loss and financial stress as a result of lockdowns have all wreaked havoc on our mental health. A poll conducted by Mental Health Research Canada in June 2021 indicated that 24 percent of Canadians reported self-rated high levels of anxiety, and 16 percent reported self-rated high levels of depression, compared with 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively, before the COVID-19 outbreak. While psychotherapy and medication are the primary interventions for mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, what we eat can also have a major impact. In fact, diet is the number one modifiable lifestyle factor to help decrease the risk of depression. A meta-analysis of 11 studies containing a total of 101,950 participants showed that an unhealthy diet can actually increase the likelihood of developing depression by 40 percent. Unfortunately, diet is not often discussed as a tool in the treatment and prevention of mental illness, mood disorders or cognitive decline. Increasingly, though, science is uncovering the link between diet and mental health, and providing evidence to support the use of dietary interventions. As a result, nutritional psychiatry is an emerging area of research that looks specifically at the role of nutrition in the development and treatment of mental illness. The landmark 2017 SMILES Trial was a randomized controlled trial (the gold standard of scientific research) that looked at people with major depression. During the 12-week study, participants were randomly placed into two groups, and received either social support or nutrition counselling to follow a Mediterranean-style diet. The Mediterranean diet is high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes (lentils, beans, peas), nuts, sources of healthy fats including olive oil, fish and seafood, includes small amounts of poultry, meat and cheese, and is low in sugar and processed foods like pop, baked goods, fast food, deli meats, processed snacks and the like.

Depression scores were taken down at both the beginning and the end of the 12-week intervention. Both groups saw improvement in their symptoms, but the group that received nutrition counselling had significant improvement in their symptoms and, in fact, in 25 percent of the participants, symptoms were lessened to the point that they were no longer classified as severely depressed. This was the first study to show evidence that diet has a significant impact on symptoms of depression. The 2019 HELFIMED Study found similar results. In this study, half the participants followed the Mediterranean diet and took a daily omega-3 supplement, while the rest participated

in a social support group. At the end of three months, both groups saw improvement in their depression scores, but the diet group had substantially greater improvements in symptoms, so much so that the average depression score in this group no longer met the criteria for extremely severe. Plus, these improvements to the participants’ symptoms were sustained three months after the intervention period ended.

How does what we eat affect our brain? The composition, structure and optimal functioning of the brain are all dependent on the proper nutrients being available in the body. To start, the foods we eat actually become our brain cells. The brain is mostly made up of essential fatty acids, which we must get from our diet in the form of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 is found primarily in fatty fish, while omega-6 is found primarily in vegetable oils. The typical North American diet—which includes plenty of processed foods containing high levels of vegetable oils—has more than enough omega-6, but is often deficient in omega-3, resulting in an unbalanced ratio of these two essential fatty acids. The problem is that omega-6 has proinflammatory properties, while omega-3 has antiinflammatory properties. For this reason, getting enough omega-3 and limiting highly processed foods is essential for the health of the brain. CANADIAN LIVING OCTOBER 2021 | 57


A communication pathway between the gut and the brain, called the gut-brain axis, connects the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract and controls many functions in the body.

To get enough omega-3, the best strategy is to eat at least two servings of fatty fish (salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines or herring) each week. Other strategies include cooking with olive or canola oil, using extra-virgin olive, flaxseed or walnut oil for salads and uncooked applications, and eating plenty of chia seeds, hemp hearts, walnuts and/or ground flaxseeds. According to Statistics Canada, only 15 percent of Canadians consume fish at least twice a week, one or more servings of which are a fatty fish. A food-first 58 | CANADIAN LIVING OCTOBER 2021

approach is always best, but if you don’t eat two servings of fatty fish per week, take a daily omega-3 supplement. For youth and adults who suffer from depression or other mental health conditions, experts recommend taking 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid. Look for a supplement with a 2:1 ratio of EPA:DHA (meaning it contains twice as much eicosapentaenoic acid as it does docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, another type of omega-3

fatty acid). Healthy individuals should take 250 milligrams of EPA a day. Furthermore, the brain is prone to oxidative damage, which is linked to neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders, as well as mental disorders like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and bipolar. Antioxidants protect our cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Colourful vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin C, polyphenols and flavonoids. Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit at each meal. Aim to eat at least 5 servings a day. Vitamin D is also a key nutrient for brain development and mental health. A 2013 systematic review and meta-analysis found that lower vitamin D levels were found in people with depression compared with a control group. A whopping 90 percent of Canadian adults who don’t take a vitamin D supplement are deficient in this nutrient. Salmon, tuna, sardines, and fortified dairy products are good sources of vitamin D. Our body naturally manufactures vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight; however, in northern countries like Canada most people aren’t exposed to the sun enough to obtain the recommended levels. The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin D for children and adults under 70 years is 600 IU a day, and for adults over 70 is 800 IU. The amount to supplement varies based on how much you get from your diet, your skin colour, age, body size and your


exposure to sunlight, so 600 to 800 IU is a general recommendation, but some people may need to take up to 2,000 IU (but be sure to stay below the tolerable upper limit of 4,000 IU).

The microbiome and the gut-brain axis. Healthy bacteria that live inside our intestines make up an ecosystem called the gut microbiome. A diverse microbiome is beneficial to our mental health. A communication pathway between the gut and the brain, called the gut-brain axis, connects the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract and controls many functions in the body. Bacteria in the gut produce neurotransmitters, and these neurotransmitters play a key role in this communication process. For example, an estimated 95 percent of serotonin, a key neurotransmitter linked to mood, wellbeing and happiness, as well as sleep regulation and appetite, is made by the bacteria in our gut. These beneficial bacteria are also shown to decrease inflammation, improve how well we absorb nutrients from food and to play a role in immune function. The composition of our microbiome varies due to multiple factors, but one key determinant is diet. Prebiotics function as the “food source” for beneficial bacteria, and promote microbial growth and activity, thereby supporting mental health. However, the average North American diet is low in foods like vegetables, fruits, whole

grains and fibre that support a healthy microbiome, and is typically high in refined grains, sugar and highly processed foods. Fermented foods (such as kimchi, kombucha, yogurt, miso) themselves contain healthy, live bacteria, called probiotics, that can help increase the number and

diversity of good bacteria, and, therefore, can play a role in helping support mental health. Probiotic supplements, specifically ones that contain the bacterial strains Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, may also contribute to creating a healthy microbiome, and good mental health.
