SITE CONTEXT ORANGE GROVE ROAD, SINGAPORE Hidden away from the busy streets of Orchard Road, the site is tucked aside at the quiet corner of Orange Grove Road, right beside the Orchard Hotel. The existing building is a faceless block that sits beneath the surrounding high-rise residentials, The tranquility exuding from the area naturally offers a haven from the bustling shopping mall street. The staircase at the front of the site was rather interesting, but was cut short by the glass wall. The exisiting conditions were unengaging to the streetscape and there appeared to be a lack of a community space/park, due to the buildings and greenery being seperated from each other. The proposal for the fashion design house aims to be a sanctum, which is a private place where most people are excluded, so as to embody the tranquality that resides in the location, while the idea of creating a artificial hill where the architecture becomes one with the landscape.

CONCEPT + VOLUME MASSING STUDIES
TENKEI WORKSHOP WORKSHOP 1: PUBLIC SPACE (OUTSIDE) + SEMI-PUBLIC SPACE (INSIDE)
WORKSHOP 2: PRIVATE SPACE (INSIDE) + PRIVATE GARDEN
WORKSHOP 3: PRIVATE SPACE (APARTMENT) + WORKING SPACE
WORKSHOP 4: LARGE SPACE + SMALL SPACES Relationship between spaces The purpose of the tenkei workshop is to explore and recognize the relationship created between two different spaces , and how the programmes of the spaces may be influenced based on this spatial exploration. Additionally, 5 key images of the physical model were taken to express the spatial concept and usage. This learnings were then translated into diagrams and further integrated and utilized with the volume massing, where the form and spaces overlap to create some interesting architecture

CANTILEVER STRUCTURE PLAN
OVERALL STRUCTURE PLAN Structural Requirements
Structural Design
A 3m x 3m grid was used a base grid to determine the built up areas, as well as determining the terracing landscape decks.
A system of structural boxes with cantilever beams to cater for the formworks required to cast the large planter box units for the landscape deck.
To articulate the biomimicry approach of creating a terraced landscape hill, the landscape requirements influenced the choice of the structural system.
After determining the rough structural design, a physical 1:100 model was built to reevaluate the structural system and note any flaws or weakness in the structural system.

FLOOR PLANS CIRCULATION DIAGRAM
SITE AREA : 671sqm GROSS FLOOR AREA : ~ 1200sqm
CUTAWAY AXONOMETRIC DIAGRAM Visual gaps through the walls Incorporating the spatial concepts from the Tenkei Workshop, the narrow gaps reveal the internal basement spaces from the street level, hidden beneath the landscape and behind the structural walls. The wide entrance openings are placed towards the rear corners, further away from the main street of Orange Grove Road. Multiple openings and skylights allow for visual connections to the landscape above and around the proposal, as well as allow for natural daylight to illuminate the internal spaces.
SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE
Beneath the hill The amalgamation of the massing studies, tenkei workshop and structural strategy creates a sunken sanctum that is hidden behind boundary walls and beneath the hill that was created, with the upper building form appearing to be sitting on the landscape. The idea of the sanctum was to create a exclusive space for the retail + workshops, and for the unsuspecting pedestrian to discover the third internal street. The narrow gaps and perforations on the surrounding walls entices people to look into the spaces and invites the main street to find a way into the building. The staircase from the street level leads to the pavillion that overlooks the sanctum that is hidden within.
