ARCHITECTURE IS A DISCIPLINED ART FORM

A painter has no limitation on the who, what, how, when or where. As far as he/she he/she is concerned, there is complete freedom in the creation process. On the other hand architects have a responsibility to adhere to the implied laws of the craft. Does this mean that creativity must be compromised? No!!! However basic architecture principles must be adhered to.

Thesis

Done by:

Brief:

Critical regionalism is an architectural strategy aimed at exploiting elements of a given locality in an attempt to mitigate the negative effects of globalization. It promotes an evolving architecture that is still relatable to the people. This thesis will explore the ideas of critical regionalism in an attempt to establish an architectural identity in downtown Nassau Bahamas- an identity that is a reflection of present day Bahamian culture and society. The design will focus on three primary guidelines of Critical Regionalism- Site design, The resistance of placelessness, and Materiality. The design will boast a cultural arts complex.

THE SPIRIT OF JUNKANOO Annually, many cultural festivals take place throughout the islands of the Bahamas. The outer islands of the Bahamas predominantly are known for a variety of different food festivals and regattas- boat races- while Nassau is largely notorious for its highly publicized Junkanoo parades. Junkanoo is unequivocally most highly regarded as authentically indicative of the Bahamian people. The power in Junkanoo is that it encompasses all the individual ingredients that comprise Bahamian culture.

Junkanoo consists of: the sounds of live music; the rhythms of synchronized dances; and vibrantly colored, hand crafted costumes. Historically Junkanoo was a festival held by Bahamian slaves, during the 16th and 17th centuries, as a form of rebellion against oppression. During the Christmas holidays slaves were given time off from their duties to do as they pleased. During this time they would dance, sing and celebrate their temporary freedom. This custom eventually developed into modern day Junkanoo.

SITE CONNECTIONS Nestled within the downtown core of Nassau, the site is surrounded by a rich representation of Bahamian society and culture. Important places include a straw market, a cruise port, and the parliament complex. What it needs is that one cultural place that ties it all together. The place that manages all of those connections ultimately brings together both visitors and locals.

When we look at the site and try to connect it to the surrounding fabric, one of the strongest connections in my opinion is between the site and the cruise ship port. It introduces visitors arriving by sea with that initial view of Bahamian identity. Another strong link is the extension of the existing Woodes Rogers walk. This walk is the primary link to the waterfront. It happens to run in the middle of the site.

INSPIRATION With the concept of biomimicry being the motivation behind our design process, the Floridian alligator was selected as our design subject for both reasons of it being indigenous to the St. Johns River; and for the various elements of color, texture, and repetition which can be found in its appearance.

PROGRAM The building features two floors (1st-2nd) of retail with the ground floor allowing direct entry from the site; and the retail floor above being accessed from within the building. The remaining floors (3rd-6th) are dedicated office purposes; and feature open floor plates which give the owner control over the layout and design of those spaces. Moreover, both buildings respectively are anchored by an atrium which hosts the main circulation access throughout the building.

SUN SHADING CONTROL LOUVERS: The double glazed facade features a series of operable louvers. Moreover they offer privacy whenever needed in the office spaces. PASSIVE COOLING: Operable windows and skylights n the atriums of both buildings allow for passive ventilation. HIGH ALBEDO ROOF which crowns both buildings; and helps mitigate heat gain within the building. GEOTHERMAL WATER PUMP RAIN WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM LOW EMMISSIVITY COATING: On the glazed facade reduces building heat gain. BIO WALL: Used primarily on the existing garage facade located along the service corridor. Its purpose is to help purify the air in that area and make the garage building a bit more aesthetically pleasing
