Personal Statement
Architectural progression has always been dependent on technology. In the past, it was the advent of steel which allowed for the design and construction of skyscrapers. Today, it is the computer which has resulted in innovations such as digital fabrication, parametric design and mass customization. Despite these innovations, technology negatively impacts our environment through means such as waste; subsequently threatening the existence of future generations. We need to derive a new method of producing aesthetically pleasing architecture while simultaneously acting as responsible, eco-minded professionals. The way to do this is by promoting technology which uses sustainable practices and methods.

ARCHITECTURE IS A DISCIPLINED ART FORM A painter has no limit on the who, what, when, how or where. As far as he/she is concerned, they can create freely without any restrictions. On the other hand, architects have a social responsibility to adhere to the implied laws of the craft. Does this mean that creativity must be compromised? No!!! However basic architectural principles such as context and practicality must be addressed in the design process.

Brief:
In an effort to upgrade its waterfront, the CIty of Toronto called for the design of a museum to house sculptures and other artwork of world renowned sculptor Henry Moore. The design had to adhere to the strict building code and zoning regulations which acompany it due to its location. An emphasis was to be placed on the integration of struc tural and mechanical systems

The site which is located within the East Bay Precinct, is guided by strict zoning and building regulations. Zoning allows for a building of a maximum 20m high, which in the context of a museum works out to be four storeys. In addition to building height restrictions, setback conditions are also stringent. The setback is 0%. Additionally, the museum is to have only 50% glazing on it’s park facing facade.

Brief:
Queen Street West is an area in Toronto which houses low to middle class families. Although, the area is considered a slum, it is rich in people, and the idea of community. The project aims at designing housing for families of all types. The goals are to maintain a sense of community, and provide a sense of belonging.

PARTI DEVELOPMENT
The design seeks to fuse residential and commercial design to create a complex which best suits the area. The commercial area is located at grade to provide interaction with the street. Also at street level is a progression of stairs which lead to a community park on the first floor. The apartment units surround the park to create a courtyard. The design concept attempts to capture the notion of progression. This is portrayed through the undulation of the apartment units, the different colours of the window mullions, and also the interchange of materials.

“SCAPE” entertainment shelter is an all wood structure which combines both the functional and aesthetic appeals of timber as a material. The structure consists of modularized structural elements which help accommodate easy assembly. “SCAPE” has a more unique form than used for traditional outdoor shelters. Its design is more architectural in nature and challenges the thresholds of wood as opposed to standard industry practices of fabrication which over-emphasize cost control and neglect product aesthetics. Typical outdoor shelters are simple in design and use straight wood members as support. However “SCAPE” has curvy-linear forms and uses glue laminated wood to realize these design ambitions.

The installation comprises of vacuum formed modules joined together to create a continuous piece. It was attached from the ceiling of an atrium and hidden behind it were multi-coloured motion sensor lights. As persons walk under certain zones within the reach of the lights, the light automatically turns on. Once the zone of action has been vacant for a certain period of time the light shuts off.

Brief:
The theme for the project was “Architecture in a World of Conflict”. It implies the design of architecture which addresses a global social ill. The location was set to a city of my selection along the ancient silk route which stretches across Asia, Northern Africa and Europe. I selected prostitution as my global issue, and Lahore, Pakistan as my location. My architectural solution was the design of a womens community college.

Since the 18th century, Heera Mandi has been Lahore’s primary entertainments pot, as women of Pakistan sing and dance for the region’s elite. However, over the years the women of this District have resorted to Prostitution as their primary economic means. The primary intent of this project is to provide as many opportunities for all demographics of females in Heera Mandi through the design of a community college. The college will combine vocational skills with the performing arts to create a program which emphasizes the skill-set of the women. At the larger scale, the college will reinforce Pakistani culture by serving as a vessel of cultural insight for the tourists who frequent the area on a daily basis.
