DARIUS D. GREENLEAF ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN 2021
Since entering the architecture program at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, I've developed a strong understanding of architecture and design. Some of my primary interests of study include detail and fabrication as well as general well being in design. These interests have lead me to aspire to work on construction sites and gain more understanding of the true nature behind the way things are put together. Within my understanding of health and well being, I want to engage more with the users and understand their reactions and satisfaction to the built environment post construction.

PUBLIC WORKS -- HOUSING -- HOSPITALITY
In this group project, the intention was take this empty lot on the corner of Harrison and Wells in Chicago and break the traditional grid. We rotated the building 45 degrees which allowed for sight-lines down the Chicago River and to the downtown area. With the Thermal Spa on the lower level patrons are closer to the river physically and visually. While the lower floor is large, the upper levels continually step back until the top floor is a mere fraction of the floor area.

The concept for this hotel was to encompass one of the biggest attractions of the downtown Champaign area into one building that would allow visitors to explore the flavors and taste of the surrounding area breweries without leaving the comfort of their hotel with three featured bar areas. BREWhaus was deigned inspired by the overall shape of containers that beer is often served and stored in; barrels, cans, and mugs.

On the University of Illinois campus the Arboretum is a beautiful place for and learning gathering on campus. However those that volunteer don’t have a central communal or meeting space. There is also a lack of facilities to hold indoor events during the colder months. The building intends to provide the space as well as create a lounge/multi purpose space for those involved with the arboretum including a kitchen and a few offices. The building is two floors with the upper floor having two entrances that both lead outside atop of a hill, that look out onto the rest of the Arboretum.

During this 10 Day Design Charrette in Volterra, Italy, we completed this proposal for an Archaeological Field Station near on of the entrances of the city. In designing this project, the goals were to create job opportunities that will attract people to the area while respecting historical context. We also intended to consider local cultural and social values but still connect to the existing fabric of the city. The base of the program came from the intention Further archaeological discoveries of this hidden gem of a city hence attracting scholars and professionals. This project was completed in collabotaion with two graduate students from Kendall College of Art and Design, Sydney Johnson & Enrique Andrade, and a senior Architecture Student at the University of Detroit Mercy, Christopher Morrison.

This 800 square foot dwelling was designed and inspired by a previous work which was manipulated and reconfigured to form and hourglass shape. The idea of the model was to experiment with the idea of heavy and light; featuring a concrete mass as the upper level and wood framing for the lower floor.

Kickapoo State Park was in dire need of camp facilities that would allow for a place for campers to stay for an extended amount of time without having to bring along their own tents. The intention of this master plan was to allow for visitors to gain a different type of experience while staying on site while also having access to indoor plumber less than a few hundred feet away. This centralized gathering house served the purpose along with having indoor amenities such as a communal kitchen, dining and lounging spaces.

Local Urbana Artisan was seeking a new build that would combine her home and art studio which is located 25 minutes from her home in order to allow her an easier work flow from life to work. In her desire for privacy in her home but also the chance to entertain and bring people into the space for art classes. This shell off a building allows for a clear divide from the street and opening toward an ideal entertainment space. Within the walls there is a clear divide between public and private space although some of these spaces can be tranformed to fit her transorming needs including a "guest room" or office. While allowing cross views throughout the home to the outdoor areas.
