Since our first inception in 1985 we have travelled a long and winding road of various coteries and shadowy visions. From the lowest stygian abyss to the tallest superstructures of dark fantasy, it’s been a long haul fraught with peril and rejection. Yet we stayed the course, sifting through trends and the mainstream looking for the unknown, the unwanted, and the unheard. We found you in a riverbed. A floater. A murky ballerina. A hanging garden of rust. We found you wanted more. And even less. So we divided into two. One for us. One for you. The work is more serious now; we’ve separated into the light and back into the dark. The light floated away while our dark side quarreled for being, its breath almost choked low, but in the end it survived, a contiguous thing waiting to be released from our hearts. We stood on shaking legs and lifted our eyes to the moon as blood reigned from our fingers. We’re back from the dead. And we’re fucking pissed.

WRAPPED IN RED Thirteen Tales of Vampiric Horror Edited by Jennifer L. Greene Sekhmet Press, 2013
A Dark World of Spirits and Fey Edited by Alan Russo Zombie Works Publications 2013
Review by Sara Young

Dark World of Spirits and Fey was born of social media and ingenuity. Posts and responses on Alan Russo’s Facebook page guided him to the subject matter, title and content of his latest Zombie Works anthology. Collections about ghosts, ghoulies and every manner of scary monster are easy to come by; stories about the dark side of spiritual beings and fairie folk, not so much. The book grabs the eye from the beginning for this reason alone.
very horror junkie needs a good anthology around. Small doses spread throughout the day keep the blood levels up. Spare time can be filled with a little nibble. A dark tale as the lights go out brings the shadow on the wall to life and makes daylight a little sweeter. The right collection of stories to be devoured in a sitting keeps the fan engaged, thoughtful, in suspense, or full of adrenaline for as long as the reader draws it out.
W
rapped In Red is that collection. Smart, stimulating and wide-ranging, it’s not another group of ho-hum bloodsucker tales. Thirteen different writing styles bring as many varieties of the undead to life. Besides having at least one horrifying beastie to suit any vampire fan, the book touches the spectrum of genres, settings and themes. From romance to western, comedy to sci-fi, vampires are taking over the shelves. They’re invading the gates of Hell, bodies of water, Appalachia and suburbia. They could show up anywhere, for anyone, any time at all. The refreshingly unexpected is what made it so much fun to turn each page.

refreshing variety of fright is always nice. Many of the stories are intelligent and thoughtprovoking while still fun to read. Every tale has a such a different personality, subject matter and tone it feels like a giant family reunion: thirteen brothers and sisters with their own lives, spread across the nation yet united by family ties. This family reunion, with no bickering or drama, is fantastic. Readers might want to look for a little extra light to brighten the corners when they walk away, though.
P
erhaps it was a by-product of ebook formatting, but there were a few rough patches that were mildly distracting. Beyond that, A Dark World of Spirits and Fey is without doubt an ethereal journey worth taking.
A
nyone who likes to put down a story only to have it creep up on them later, laugh aloud, or look at familiar things in a new light will get a thrill from Wrapped In Red, and it is a must read for children of the night everywhere.
