Picnic Park Design

2013 Timisoara, Romania

The picnic park competition was

organized by a national recycling company that wanted to promote simple sustainable design. Our project got the first prize because it used simple recycled materials and was easy to build. We used wooden pallets that are easy to find in any local warehouse, they are made to last in harsh conditions and supports weight, making it a perfect ``brick`` for our project.

First Prize

Building it

After winning the competition we traveled to Bucharest and got the job to build the real park in the city that will win the national recycling competition. The winning city was Tulcea, a small port city by the BlackSea. Our site chosen for the park was facing a lake and had some trees for shading, we created furniture to enjoy the sun by the lake and also tables and benches by the treas to enjoy the shade on a summer day. Together with a team of woodworkers, we created a small hill out of pallets to have a better view of the lake. on the site, we planted trees and installed lights. The end result was a new green and safe place to have a picnic.

Furniture

We designed a series of exterior furniture made out of full pallets or elements and also massive sculptures or amphitheaters for theater or concerts.

Shipping pallets are like LEGOs - you can

build practically anything out of them. Over the years we’ve seen some amazing structures created with these recycled materials - from emergency housing to interiors, temporary theaters and even gardens. You can find shipping pallets in every country in standard sizes, and they can usually be picked up for free or at most for a few dollars apiece.

Public discussion

Our park was published in the national architecture magazine and we got more work, this time on a pavilion for a city conference between the local authorities and the architects to discuss the green infrastructure of our city. The project borrowed pallets from the local beer factory and together with a team of student volunteers we assembled our pavilion in front of an old synagogue.

R

We also used the opportunity to use the courtyard of the synagogue for music and light installations giving ideas to the locals. The pavilion included 4 big trees that we had to bring in from a local farm. With our project, we started a discussion about public space and the need for trees on our streets.

Urban planning Architecture Internship 2011

Project program Urban Development Location Farum, Denmark Team TRANSFORM + COBE Year 2011

Impact

Farum forms part of the Finger Plan developed fro Copenhagen, Introducing a city with its train station, we are writing a new chapter in the history of the Finger plan development, giving a chance for future small

The Five Finger Plan

Developed in 1947, is an urban development plan that focuses on both metropolitan train lines and the green spaces in between.

Existing The outdoor areas consist of recreation areas, paths with smaller squares and a parking area. Parking is located under the apartment blocks from which you can take a staircase to the apartments. In this way the pedestrians are separated from the motorists. The project is formed by a floating trail that goes along and in between the apartment blocks, creating openings. This trail retains the very characteristic wild planting between the blocks and is at the same time a shortcut with various hotspots attached.

Midtpunkt Farum Midtpunkt is a famous social housing building from the 1970s, situated in Northern Zealand, Denmark. It is based on modernist principals where the idea was to combine single-family homes with public functions in a closed community. The residents wanted Farum Midtpunkt to be more open to the surrounding areas and have it renewed with clear respect for the original intentions of the settlement.

The renovation is both a boost of outdoor areas as well as a significant contribution to the image boost that the housing block is undergoing. The renovation has created a greater sense of safety for residents, better public life in the area and a better connection to Farum city.

Integrated planinng Rather than the traditional

suburb, the city had to hold different types of relatively dense low rise typologies with small gardens and large common areas. The Green Heart serves as a city`s community garden where city life can unfold.

Along the perimeter of the city, the structure merges with the surrounding landscape. This results in a city with unique encounters between landscape and settlement - both in the center and along the edges. The dense urban fabric creates a vibrant urban environment, while landscape and nature are always present.

The Green Heart is a unique urban space that integrates nature, urban life, and pedestrian infrastructure. Here, the city`s residents gather for recreation, shopping, sports, and other activities.

Challenges

The life of Farum revolves

around a central square space, the Green Heart, uniting the best of two worlds: Urban life and services with a scenic location and recreational environments.

Site centers: sports clubs and clubhouses are all arranged around the Green Heart - and are in close proximity to the train station.

Restauration and Extension

The Foundry in London is a project I worked on with magma architecture in Berlin, the project was in the initial stage and I worked closely with the team to prepare material for the first and second meeting with the developers. My work involved conceptual design, mapping the old historical building and planning the new mixeduse extension. The site is on the corner of Blackfriars Road and the area is in full-scale development change, with a new tall residential building being build in the close vicinity. We started with a pan to preserve the old building and extend vertically, because of the neighboring buildings the shape we ended up with was interesting to explore. In order to make it less visible and less imposing from the street view, we chose a transparent membrane material to cover our building, letting light in until the lower levels of the old building

Long-Term Plan Through his recent strategies, from housing and economic development, to the draft London Plan, the Mayor has begun to implement his vision for ‘A City for All Londoners’ – supporting ‘good growth’, with strong communities and active citizenship at the heart of public life.

New Terminal Proposal

Concept In order to solve the planning issues connected with the project, Koelnmesse had decided to conduct a competition in two processing phases. Phase 1, 20 firms were selected from a total of 81 submissions and asked to work out their proposals for the connectivity issues between the buildings.

Impact

It will simplify and clarify the centre’s structure, abolishing the need for detours. Shops and catering outlets will make the Terminal an attractive place for people to spend their time. A glazed roof will let light shine into the building unhindered.

June 2015

As the new centre of the southern part of the exhibition grounds, the new Terminal will connect the various entrances and halls with one another and at the same time enable the different areas of the exhibition centre to be flexibly used.

most attractive inner-city exhibition center so that it can continue to provide exhibitors and visitors with an appropriate setting for trade fairs, congresses and other events in the future. That’s why Koelnmesse is planning to make major investments in the future of the exhibition center and the trade fair program until 2030. The plan is titled “Koelnmesse 3.0” and encompasses investments of more than Euro 600 million until 2030. Koelnmesse intends to align the exhibition centre and the infrastructure with the requirements of the trade fair business .

The Goal The main goal of the program is to reduce disadvantages in the poorest areas by focusing on four issues: unemployment, poor health, crime, and education. Other issues such as improvement to the physical environment are secondary to these main priorities.

Central 08 Station Location: Timisoara, Romania

2017

Oportunity China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious program to connect Asia with Africa and Europe via land and maritime networks along six corridors with the aim of improving regional integration, increasing trade and stimulating economic growth.

Vision The project connects surrounding major cities from 3 different countries accumulating to a regional population of 2 million, this includes the joint expansion project between Timisoara and its closest neighbor Arad. New retail developments drive job creation and the innovative use of existing space can unlock land previously thought to be inaccessible. Today, the impact of stations goes far beyond architecture and aesthetics – stations can genuinely transform local economies and communities.

The Belt and Road Initiative addresses an “infrastructure gap” and thus has the potential to accelerate economic growth across the Asia Pacific area and Cen-

Reginal Development Urban planning and development, including regional planning, addresses the direction and management of building and regional development projects in residential, community and municipal areas, including traffic and transport, utilities, services and waste disposal, land use regulation plus nature and landscape conservation. To meet these responsibilities, the project and the people involved must be aware of and consider the interactions between political, social, economic and engineering aspects.

Location Timisoara is situated in a developing region with infrastructure projects that will change it`s economy, the train station is today in a poor state and it uses only 20% of its rail network. Bringing back to use this connection will increase mobility in the region and allow people to commute to work more efficiently, bringing social and economic benefits.

Long - Term Development Housing will be made affordable, projected at 14 percent lower than the surround-

ing metro area, through timber-frame construction and the hope offered by modular units, micro-units, and co-housing. Integrated planning with an eco-focus. The goal was and still is to create a residential environment based on sustainable resource usage, where energy consumption and waste production are minimized, and resource-saving and recycling are simultaneously maximized. The new train station extension and pedestrian connections will bring people more easy to this area. Integrating living and working together with a wide range of activities and green areas make for a better standard of living in this area.

Model Making In Architecture

The future Though the future of model making in architecture is fairly certain, the shape it takes is likely to change and evolve fast in coming years. As ever, new technology is likely to have a huge impact on the way models are made and how they are used during the design process.

MODELS “Architectural technology is one facet of a world that is increasingly virtual and mediated by technology. Whist these technologies have become essential to the way we live – and design - in this context the physical and real become more, not less, valuable.

MODEL MAKING 3D-printed architectural models are far faster, cheaper, and easier to build.

This new technology is becoming increasingly popular within the field of architecture, making the production of 3D models significantly easier, faster, and cheaper.

Eco Housing

07

Location: Lรถrrach, Germany

Description In 2012 I collaborated with other students and we participated in European competition of design. The main objective was the implementation of smart living units on an urban scale. The city was awarded that year for the greenest European city and it wanted to encourage other eco-friendly developments. Our proposal combines solar, geothermal, smart energy storage systems, good isolation and prefabricated timber frames from the local wood storage to create a sustainable and cost-efficient product. The units are arranged to have the best views of the surroundings and also allow for a small landscaping phase, with a small stream passing through the site.

ELEGANCE BEYOND AESTHETICS Structural performance of the highest order is achieved when it excels all these 3 Es, of which – ‘elegance’ stands for more than just aesthetics. A structure cannot be a successful work of structural art without also being a successful work of structural engineering design – that is functional as well as safe. Whether an architect or a structural engineer, both the inevitable sides of the same coin have to be considered while designing.

The structural form should have an aesthetic appeal while being simultaneously driven by engineering considerations. An elegant design is the one that arises from engineering creativity, satisfies the requirements of efficiency and economy, and is also elegant.
