FEMA Selects Darley for Disaster Relief The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is there for those in their most dire times and Darley is proud to play a small part in assisting those in need. FEMA recently awarded a major contract to Darley to provide residential fire sprinkler systems for FEMA housing. When disaster survivors are displaced from their homes, they are often sheltered in temporary housing called Manufactured Housing Units (MHUs). These MHUs will now be provided with completely self-contained fire sprinkler systems. During hurricane Katrina in New Orleans alone, approximately 180,000 MHUs were deployed. The Darley Tank and Pump Systems (TPS) are manufactured to NFPA 13D standards and include a 300 gallon water tank, Darley 2 hp The Darley Tank and Pump System 230 volt pump can withstand its design for snow loading, rated at 30 gpm @ wind resistance and freeze protection. 52 psi, and a high tech pump control panel. The TPS can be installed on existing housing units that have sprinkler systems or new ones. Darley currently has the ability to produce up to 100 TPS per month and can increase capacity as needed. Some of those might be accidental fires,” Fugate told ABC News. In 2012, Darley purchased Self-Testing Systems (STS), a market leader in NFPA 13D residential pump systems. The patented STS residential pump system automatically calibrates the pump during installation and performs a twice-monthly self-test to ensure the pump is working properly. DARLEY TIMES From the Office of
PAUL DARLEY
No One Does It Alone I’m often asked, “Why is Darley so growth oriented?” There are really two reasons: the first is our passion to serve others with new, innovative, safe products to help you do your job better. The second is to perpetuate our family business for future generations, so that they, too, can be good stewards for our employees and customers. Over the past few years, our fire service and military customers have been called to do more with less. As a result, they’re adopting new technology faster than before to help them do their jobs safer and more efficiently. Progressive fire services, military branches and companies had to reinvent themselves, and those that did are stronger now as a result. Darley reinvented itself as well. Heck, innovation became my grandfather’s hallmark in 1908. As you review this newsletter, you’ll notice we’re introducing a lot of new products. Not just firefighting pumps, but a complete line of new NFPA 13D residential fire sprinkler pump systems, a new line of self-priming pumps for irrigation, drones and even water purification systems for military and humanitarian applications. None of this has been done alone. Partnerships have become more important than ever - with our customers, suppliers, employees and family. Yes, family partnerships are paramount in a family business, and I’m proud to tell you this is our strongest partnership and our greatest asset. We continue to onboard additional members of our fourth generation (G4) family after they successfully work somewhere else for at least three to five years. In family business circles, they are referred to as G4 or “NextGen.” We currently have six G4 family members and nine G3 or “NowGen” working at Darley. The G4 are “Learning the Darley Way,” earning the respect of their co-workers and customers, and making suggestions for improvements. Each brings a unique skill set to the company, and it’s rewarding to see how they work so closely together as a team. They’re preserving our rich culture, symbolized by a cherished set of values. Most of the “NowGen” aren’t planning to move aside just yet, and that’s good because collectively, we make a formidable team and a strong family. We will continue to learn from each other and serve you with the passion that you’ve come to expect from the Darley family and our awesome Team Darley.

Next Darley Generation Onboards and Begins to Make Their Mark You can never start the succession planning process too early. As W.S. Darley continues to onboard 4th generation family members, it is extremely important that all generations are ensuring the right procedures are in place for succession planning. There are currently six 4th generation family members working in the business and the group has formed what they call the “G4 Forum.” The group has a diverse Darley representation, holding positions in Fire Pump Sales, Engineering, Export Sales, and Defense. The G4 Forum promotes teamwork among the next generation as they discuss relevant business topics. The group focuses on strategic direction, growth, succession planning, and stewardship, while also acting as liaisons between non-active shareholders and the Executive Team. The G4 Forum holds quarterly meetings in addition to frequent email and phone communication led by a rotating chair. Meetings mirror the format and content of the Board of Directors and Management Meetings. The current chair reports to the Board of Directors at the quarterly meeting with G4 updates, new ideas, and proposals. Some of the latest projects include revising the Family Constitution, Compensation Policy, and onboarding process. In addition to business responsibilities, the G4 Forum also plans and facilitates the annual Family Meetings and bi-annual Family Retreats. These meetings revolve around ownership, unity, and The Darley family at a recent family meeting held in Chicago. family cohesion. The G4 group has an established set of norms, values, and purpose statement that will help guide the future leadership transition. The G4’s ultimate goal is to continue to grow the company for the next generation and generations to come.

Darley Rolls Out The Red Carpet at Fire China Beijing Okay…actually the carpet was gray, but Darley had an unmatched presence at Fire China held recently in Beijing. Fire China happens every two years in Beijing and is attended by an estimated 35,000 visitors from around the globe. The Darley booth was approximately 8,000 sq. ft. and arguably the largest and most professional exhibit. Darley is branded in China as “Da Li” which translates into “Powerful.” Bill Darley first visited China in 1982, and since then it has grown into our largest export market. Darley is perhaps one of the most famous fire service brands in China – well known for our complete product line of fire pumps, apparatus, fire equipment and water purification equipment. So it would stand that Darley would have the largest booth at the Fire China show held late last year. Each year Darley will exhibit at almost 100 trade shows in the USA and around the world for all the markets that we serve. These include tradeshows for our fire, defense, water purification and marine markets. Some shows can be handled with one sales rep working a 10'x10' booth, but for some shows like Fire China and FDIC, Darley can have as many as 75 employees working the booth. Darley’s success is based largely on over 40 Team Darley China The Darley booth was 8,000 sq. ft. and featured a members who sell and service a wide range of products. wide variety of Darley products. DARLEY TIMES JUST ASK ENGINEERING
Question? How does Darley determine if a driveline layout is acceptable for a pump installation? Asked by: Tom High, Siddons Martin Shane Sullivan Design Engineer
Answer.
Darley closely reviews four key categories before approving a driveline application. We begin by determining if the driveline diameter can handle the maximum torque to be transmitted. PTO pumps rated to 1,500 gpm utilize a Spicer 1410 series driveline. Larger PTO driven pumps up to 3,000 gpm use a Spicer 1550 series driveline. Midship pumps typically use the same series driveline as provided by the chassis manufacturer. Second, we review the maximum driveline length allowed for the maximum speed at which the driveline is capable of spinning. Most Spicer 1410 drivelines utilize a 3.5" or 4" tube outside diameter, both with .095" thick tubing walls. The 3.5" tube is generally acceptable for a 68" universal joint center to universal joint center length for speeds up to 2,500 RPM. The 4" tube is generally acceptable for a 72.75" length for speeds up to 2,500 RPM. Increasing maximum driveline speeds to 3,500 RPM would imply the 3.5" tube driveline could be used up to a 57.25" length, while the 4" tube could be used up to a 61.5" length. Third, Darley examines driveline During a recent quarterly company address, Shane balancing. Darley Sullivan received his first patent for new design requires that drivefeatures on our KS pump.

lines be balanced to ISO 1940 Grade 16 Standard. Most reputable driveline manufacturers have equipment that allows them to spin a completed driveline and then precisely attach balancing weights. You should be fine if you utilize such equipment. Fourth, we review maximum torsional vibrations the driveline may experience due to the geometry of the installation. Torsional vibration is Darley 1500 gpm PSP driven by a 1 o’clock the speeding up and slowing PTO on an Allison 3000 EVS transmission. down of the driveline as it rotates around at what you think is a constant RPM. Unless your driveline is a straight arrow shot from the drive source to the pump, your driveline will experience some amount of torsional vibration. If torsional vibration is less than the recommended limits, your driveline layout should experience a long life free of any noticeable shaking. This fourth component, however, is not as simple to ascertain as the first three. To assist in finding the maximum torsional vibration, Allison Transmission has created a computer program that calculates vibration based on your particular driveline layout. Darley can share this program and usage instructions with you. As long as your driveline layout has less than 500 radians per second squared torsional vibration, 1,000 radians per second squared inertial drive vibration and 1,000 radians per second squared inertial coast vibration, the driveline layout should pass muster. As with any firefighting need, please feel free to contact Darley with your questions, and we will happily provide a solution to meet your needs. Demand Darley.

Getting to Smart Our mission is to passionately serve the world’s first responder and tactical communities by providing high quality, safe and innovative products with unmatched commitment and service. Our strategies are aligned with the direction of the fire service and it is our goal is to ensure that innovation stays embedded in our company culture. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has prepared a Research Roadmap that is a good start and critical step on the path to “Smart” Fire Fighting going forward for the fire service. Firefighters need better access to critical information that can make their work more effective and safer. Data provided by sensors in buildings, on protective gear and fire equipment for example can provide incident commanders and responders with valuable information. After all, it is all about helping responders to make more informed decisions faster, thus making dangerous work less dangerous. A critical part of being able to leverage Cyber Physical System (CPS) technology is the development of standards that responders can utilize. Two new NFPA committees were recently formed to help get to “Smart” - the NFPA 950, Standard for Data Development and Exchange for the Fire Service, and the NFPA 951, Guide to Building and Utilizing Digital Information. Matt Darley and Mike Mocerino were recently appointed to these committees and we are confident that they will be strong contributors to what will become very important committees. The NIST summary states that we can expect to see a shift away from traditional based tactics and that the use of new technologies will become a reality if we join together and collaborate. Darley couldn’t agree more. It is our plan to help facilitate a network to allow new ideas and innovation to occur more rapidly. We also remain committed to providing new products and innovative solutions to the world’s first responders. Stay tuned. Peter Darley Executive VP, Chief Operating Officer peterdarley@darley.com

G4 - NEXT GENERATION DARLEY
Claire Long Not only was my great grandfather, William S. Darley, passionate about fire equipment, he also loved the great outdoors and wildlife. I’m sure that’s where I get my interest. This is my final year at Fenwick High School where I’ve been involved with Gymnastics, Soccer, Cheerleading, National Honor Society as well as being a Kairos leader. I did my first flip-flop at the age of 5 and worked my way up to a Level 9 by freshman year. Then came a series of injuries that kept me out of competition just when I hoped to be at my best. I reached a very difficult decision this past year to give up the sport I love, but was determined to stay active and gave diving a try. Many of the skills came naturally, but I was also starting at square one. We had a fun group of girls on our team and with the help of their encouragement I was able to qualify for the State Diving Meet. I’m ready to start college in the fall at the University of Texas with the dream of one day entering Veterinary Medicine. Claire is the youngest of three children of James and Cara Long. There are currently 32 fourth generation (G4) Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.
