For most new leaders, the first 100 days are critical and can set the tone for what’s to come under their leadership. We hear a lot about this with respect to our political leaders but the same applies to any new leader, from a newly elected volunteer fire chief, to a recently promoted military leader to a business unit manager. When I first became president of our company in 1997, I remember well that my first goals were simply, “Be humble. Try to earn respect. Learn from successful leaders. Don’t screw it up!” 20 years later, I still think of those daily. Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric was the top business leader at the time, and I really focused on his business philosophies and actions. I remember he wrote, “The three most important metrics to measure a business’s health are: 1) employee engagement, 2) customer satisfaction and 3) cash flow.” I took that to heart, then and today still embrace those as basic concepts. Thanks to you, our customers, partners and employees, we experienced unprecedented growth last year with record sales and our highest marks ever in these three key areas. We recently received our highest employee and customer satisfaction rankings ever. Our employees are engaged and we involve them in our planning processes, keep them informed on how we are doing and give them the tools to help us achieve our mission. We hunt as a team. We were humbled to receive an A+ Better Business Bureau rating, the highest ever customer satisfaction scores, and recent awards from the US Marine Corps (see page 1). We continue to run our company as fiscally responsible stewards who reinvest most of our profits back into our company and our communities that we serve. We feel blessed to be able to give with our time, talents and treasures to more than 250 charities each year through our corporate social responsibility initiatives (see page 7). To whom much is given, much is expected. You will never see complacency from us and this is exemplified by our 2017 company theme “In Relentless Pursuit…” We are going to continue to stay focused on these key metrics as we pursue excellence in all that we do. If you ever feel that we are not, please email or call me day or night.
From our very first $600 fire truck to solar-powered water purification systems for military and humanitarian applications, Darley has spent over a century relentlessly pursuing the next big thing. Today first responders are asked to do more with less. Thus, adopting new technologies is more important than ever. We now enter the age of Smart Firefighting - an age where intelligent, connected products are revolutionizing public safety. Darley acknowledged this growing demand for accelerated technology growth and created the WeRespond community, a platform that aims to accelerate innovation for emergency responders. Leading manufacturers provide technology insight on future product developments while first responders communicate common needs and capability gaps. The community goals are to accelerate growth, knowledge and connections at a global scale. Please visit www.smartfirefighting.com to join the discussion Get involved! Darley recently unveiled its new Smart Panel II electronic pressure governor. The feature-rich system allows extraordinary control of any firefighting pump. Its four main components include a main display, controlling computer, and two quarter-inch male NPT pressure transducers. These can be easily integrated into an electronic controlled engine, providing control via the SAE J1939 electronic control logic. The system is built around a bright, daylight-readable 7" LED screen, which allows the user to easily monitor: u Engine speed u Accumulated engine hours u Engine coolant temperature u Battery voltage u Engine oil temperature u 0-500 psig pump The Smart Panel II monitors engine speed, temperature, u 29.9 in/Hg suction vacuum to discharge pressure pressure, running hours, battery level and more. u Pump operating hours 300 psig pump intake pressure Visual and audible alarms can be set to alert users if any values cross a safety threshold. Built-in protection, for example, reduces engine speed in case of overheating or a low-water situation. The system is designed from the ground up to be easy to use. It incorporates tactile push-buttons and a rotary throttle knob that allow for use even when wearing heavy gloves. Two modes of operation are supported, Pressure Governor mode and Engine Governor Mode, with one button press to change between them. UAS Usage Increasing in the Fire Service Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), also known as drones, are becoming commonplace in the fire service. In February, Darley delivered an InstantEye UAS to the Hastings Area of New Zealand Fire Service. This UAS sale is part of a new Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) program by the National Fire Service to implement UAS operations to help manage wildfires and urban emergencies across the country. In March, the New York Fire Department used a Hoverfly Livesky system on an active fire for the first time. The tethered HoverFly system offers a unique UAS solution that enables constant power and video connection to firefighters on the ground. In April at FDIC, Darley and HoverFly will film the HOT classes and we will have the latest from Hoverfly in our UAS can help the fire service manage wildfires Darley booth #3721. Hell Froze Over As a long-suffering Cubs fan, I plan to ride out the 2016 World Series championship for as long as possible. I don’t think too many would fault me, given that the team’s last celebration occurred the same year Henry Ford introduced the Model T (and W.S. Darley & Co. was founded.) In recent years, the Cubs have left no stone unturned, from building new training facilities in Mesa, AZ and the Dominican Republic, to renovating Wrigley Field, increasing front office staff and recruiting the most talented players, coach and executives to join the Northsiders. One of the best hires, Manager Joe Maddon, has only two rules for his players: 1) run hard to first base (play hard), and 2) have fun. The Cubs coach is an outstanding motivator, and his messages are priceless: Respect 90 – “Respect every aspect of the game as you move 90 feet between bases. The more respect you give to what you are doing and to the people you work with, the more respect will come back your way.” Attitude – “Attitude is a decision…And when it comes down to individual effort, it takes absolutely zero talent to play hard every day.” Pressure of the Job – “Don’t ever permit the pressure to exceed the pleasure. That’s on the top of my lineup card every night.” Celebrate the Victories - Celebrate the Victories - “When we win, I want us to have the best post-game celebration. And, then on the other hand, I want us to lose hard for 30 minutes, and then leave it.” The Cubs new clubhouse is equipped with smoke, bright lights and even a disco ball for celebrations after every home victory. Embrace the Target – “I’m really a big believer of running towards the fire as opposed to away from it,” said the Cubs skipper. “To me, that leads to focusing on the day, focusing on the process of the day and the process needs to be our anchor.” In 2017, Joe Maddon is asking his players to be “authentic.” While most professional sports teams have dress codes, Joe simply says, “If you look hot, wear it.” There are a host of professional and business reasons why the Cubs have moved from Lovable Losers to World Series champions, but having the right leadership and culture has made a major impact.

Team Darley participated in the 28th annual United Way golf tournament this past summer at Lake Wissota Golf Course in Chippewa Falls, WI. This event raises money to offset operating costs of the United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley organization. That allows nearly all of the money raised during the fall campaign to be allocated to civic organizations focusing on the success of students, financial stability of families and overall healthy lifestyle and behavior choices. Team Darley consisted of COO Jeff Darley and his wife, Patti; North American Sales Manager Jason Darley; Design Engineer Kyle Darley; and Pump GM Mark Baker. We hope to see you there next year!
