DARLEY TIMES From the Office of
PAUL DARLEY
Lead From the Front and Earn it! Leading a company, fire department, a military platoon or any organization is both a privilege and a huge responsibility; a leader casts a long shadow that everyone is watching. Growing up in a family business and becoming president at the young age of 35, I always knew that I had to earn it! I took a great deal of pride in being the first one at work and the last to leave for years. While the first few years are critical, you need to continue to build mutual trust with the people around you and be able to inspire them. Let your team know that you put their interests and the organization’s interests first. Leadership does not come with a title. It is earned each day by the small actions you take while working with people around you. They watch you closely — some inherently want you to fail for one reason or another, but most look to take direction and support you. Over the past 10 years, I’ve had an opportunity to watch and study numerous military leaders, and the common theme is that they lead by example and always go first. By doing so, they quickly instill confidence in the troops they lead while earning their respect. It’s been said in many different ways, but great bosses are good communicators who share information, hire right, celebrate wins, and are empathetic to the needs of others. Be the pacesetter, the example setter, be consistent, let your people know where you stand and most importantly create other leaders. At Darley, we’re all about creating leaders through our core values including employee empowerment, teamwork and recognition. It’s reflected in our 2017 employee engagement scores which were the highest since we’ve started conducting them over 20 years ago. We trust you also see it our team’s ability to promptly, fairly and respectfully work with you. We’re proud of the recent awards highlighted in this newsletter, but we’re mostly honored and humbled to serve those who protect us all so selflessly. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

After thoroughly reviewing and researching all available manufacturers and products on the market, Boston selected the Darley PSM pump. Working with E-One and dealer Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, the Boston FD has placed 23 Pumpers in service in 2017 all equipped with the PSM. Lt. Jim O’Brien commented to Jason Darley, “It was a tough process determining what would be the best pump product as we look to rejuvenate and standardize our fleet to meet the current needs of the Boston FD and the customers we serve. After working with your team, we are convinced that not only do we have the best available product, but also the strongest support team possible in Darley to serve the city’s current and future needs.” The PSM in the Boston pumpers is rated at 1250 GPM and utilizes Darley’s “Large Eye Impeller.” This combination allowed the FD to save some crucial space and weight against the vehicles GVWR while not sacrificing flow capabilities. The combination being fed from hydrants has flowed in excess of 1900 GPM allowing the FD to feel confident in the pump’s ability at multiple alarm fires. Over time, this level can build up and make you sick, or even kill you. Lately there have even been issues with carbon monoxide poisoning affecting law enforcement personnel while in their vehicles. JUST ASK ENGINEERING Question? What type of relief valves does Darley offer to protect the pump and operator? Wayne Hable Chief Engineer waynehable@darley.com
Asked by: Clay Danielson, Silver Ships, Inc.
Answer.
We offer two types. A Darley discharge pressure relief valve is intended to only allow as much as a 30 psig pressure rise when going from the rated flow capacity to a dead headed condition (zero flow rate) if the input speed is kept at a constant speed. When doing this, the discharge valves cannot be closed faster than three seconds and no longer than 10 seconds. A Darley discharge pressure relief valve works with discharge pressure as low as 90 psig and as high as 250 psig. A Darley discharge pressure relief valve is set to open at a predetermined discharge pressure. It is not a pressure governor – if you want to apply more speed which will create more discharge pressure, you can drive the discharge pressure higher than desired even when the discharge pressure relief valve is trying to relieve the discharge pressure. A Darley discharge pressure relief valve is intended to protect operators who are using the same fire pump but are unaware of each other’s operating condition. I.E. if two or more discharges are being used and one of the discharges is suddenly closed off, the operators on the still open discharge lines should only see as much as a 30 psig pressure rise.
We also offer a Darley thermal relief valve which is intended to dump water from the pump when water internal to the pump has been found to attain a predetermined temperature. Normally this predetermined temperature is 140˚F. What we have witnessed is pumps that are dead headed and have significant power being supplied to them heat up the water that is contained within the pump. Essentially the pump is a water heater in this dead headed condition. Without knowing the pump can act as a hot water heater to dead headed water, the first glug of water discharged can be quite warm when the operator finally opens up a discharge The Darley line. A thermal relief valve ensures that discharge pressure relief is intended to protect the first glug of water will be no warmer valve operators who are using the than that pre-determined temperature. same pump but are unaware Think of riot control vehicles that are of each other’s operating at the standby of an unruly crowd. The conditions. riot control vehicle operators will have their engines revved up and their discharges closed off until they are given the command to engage the crowd. Riot control vehicles can be on the standby for what may seem like an eternity to the policemen. Without a thermal relief valve, that first blast of water to disperse the crowd could be quite warm. We want the rioters to simply get wet and not be scalded by that water stream. Pumps can have both a Darley discharge pressure relief valve and a thermal relief valve installed upon them. Or they can have one or the other. Or they can have none at all – it simply depends on how you want it configured.
New 6000 GPM Industrial Pump - Highest Flow on the Market Capable of flows in excess of 6000 gallons per minute from draft, Darley’s new 2ZSM pump was designed to ensure firefighters and emergency personnel have the flow capacity they need when approaching large refinery fires, relay pumping to multiple pumpers, or dewatering applications. The pump’s operating characteristics will leave you in a state of awe. The pump is known for vibration-free operation throughout the performance curve. In addition, the discharge stream profile is the most uniform on the market. Some would claim the dual impeller is to blame for the tightly patterned stream profile. If that isn’t enough, the pump is the quietest in its class, allowing for improved on-scene communication when facing the toughest of emergencies. The 2ZSM pump is also equipped with a dual chamber engine cooler to allow for additional cooling when pushing your engine to its limits. EMPLOYEE PROFILE John Monpas, CNC Lathe Operator, Union Steward
If you own a Darley pump, chances are you’ve seen some of John Monpas’ best work. John is a CNC lathe operator at Darley’s Pump Division in Chippewa Falls, WI. He produces high quality, high performance shafts and gears which drive everything from the Navy’s P-100 portable pump to the latest 2ZSM 6000 gpm super pump. John was fixing gas pumps for a petroleum service back in 1976 when he heard Darley might be hiring. He applied and was hired to run a drill press. After two years, he graduated to an MC50 lathe, then to a bigger turret ACME lathe, and finally to a LR 25 CNC lathe. The Okuma 400 he runs today is a state-of-the-art precision lathe. In his nearly 42 years with Darley, John has seen many changes. The biggest? Moving from a small, poorly lit production facility on Walnut Street in Chippewa Falls to the modern, well-lit buildings (Yates, Boos and WJD) on Palmer Street that house 125 employees in the Pump and Apparatus divisions. “It’s cleaner, and has a much better atmosphere,” says John, who appreciates the air conditioning, too. Besides his job as a CNC operator, John has served as a steward for the Teamsters union for more than 15 years. In that role, he helps negotiate multi-year contracts between Darley and the union, and “tries to keep the peace between shop workers and the office,” he says with a laugh. He also has 27 years under his belt with the Army National Guard. He and his wife of 38 years, Kathrine, have three children: James, Christine and Juston, and eight grandchildren. Away from Darley, John also enjoys farming 320 acres.

FOURTH GENERATION DARLEY
Tom Long I am a senior at Benedictine University pursing my BS degree in management. This past summer, I worked as an intern at Darley. It was a great experience. I worked primarily in the accounting department on our accounts payable. I enjoyed the many different challenges that arise from day to day. My coworkers in the accounting department have been awesome and taught me a lot. I also had a chance to work for the equipment division collecting data that will enhance the customer’s experience through reduced lead-times and more detailed product specifications. Outside of the office, I am always on the move. I enjoy going to Chicago White Sox baseball games, camping, fishing, playing softball, and being horrendous at golf. If the fit is right, I look forward to hopefully working at Darley at some point in the future after working outside the business, as required by our family participation plan Tom is the son of Michael and Tina Long, the grandson of Pat Long (Darley), the great grandson of founder, William Stuart Darley. He is one of seven children in his family. There are currently 32 fourth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.

DEALER SPOTLIGHT - CIRCLE K SERVICE Since 1986, Circle K Service has seen plenty of fire trucks pass through its doors - either newly built or needing maintenance. One fire truck, in particular, will forever hold a special place in Al and Rod Kloha’s hearts: a 1946 W.S. Darley truck. The story began in Michigan in 1946, when Beaverton FD, purchased a new Darley fire engine. The engine remained in service until 2002 when a new truck was purchased from Circle K, which has been a Darley dealer Circle K have been “Darley Disciples” Distributors since 1993. Founded by Al Kloha in 1986, for over 30 years. Darley Sales Manager Neal Brooks Circle K took the 1946 engine as a trade-in shown here with Rod and Al Kloha in front of a 1946 for the new one.“Of course, Pops (Al) wanted Darley Truck. to keep it,” said Al’s son, Rod, who now owns the business. “It was in service right up until the day it was replaced in 2002. It has had many years of wear and tear on it.” With a desire to see the fire engine restored to its original condition, Al began the time-consuming project in his spare time. “When Pops retired, I tried to make a push to get it done. At the time, his health was a bit fragile. He’s a lot stronger now and I wanted to complete the restoration giving him time to enjoy it,” said Rod. 14 years later in 2016, the push was made to secretly complete the restoration and present the truck to Al on Aug. 29th, his 73rd birthday. “Part of it was fun because he did not know we were finishing the restoration,” Rod said. “I basically banned him from the shop so he couldn’t see that we were working on it. He wasn’t very happy with that.” The plan involved some crafty maneuvering. “There were times he would insist on coming to the shop and I would have to drive the truck next door to hide it in our neighbor’s garage. It was fun,” said the cunning Rod. As Al’s birthday approached, Rod invited him to the shop for the unveiling. “He walked in, stopped and took a look at it and just stared. He was pretty emotional and speechless.” The fire engine was restored with almost 100% original 1946 parts including original ladders, hose reel, spotlight, siren and posts. “Pops is not often speechless, but he had a hard time talking for a bit,” Rod said, smiling. “He’s a very passionate man. It was very emotional for all of us. The guys at the shop were all a part of it.”
