A lot of this cancer awareness has been in response to the Lavender Ribbon Report that was produced by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and specifically, the Fire Volunteer & Combination Officers (VCOS), along with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). You can quickly download the 44-page report from the IAFC website or at www.Darley.com. DARLEY TIMES From the Office of
PAUL DARLEY
Black Swan Events - More Common Than You Think As I write this in late March, the world has gone into lockdown over the coronavirus. The things that made the headlines a few weeks ago, like the pettiness in Washington D.C., seems so trivial today. The worst is yet to come and the impact will be significant. It’s inspiring to see our country’s leaders putting their differences aside to mitigate this crisis. We applaud and thank our first responder customers who are on the front lines. The decisive and swift action of our country’s leadership at the federal, state and local levels is admirable and it’s making a huge difference. At Darley, we too moved into crisis mode early and implemented our Disaster Response Plan before the coronavirus hit the U.S.A. As a result, we are well positioned to continue to support you without jeopardizing the health and safety of our employees. A black swan event is described as “an unpredictable event, resulting in severe and widespread consequences. After the black swan event, people will rationalize the event as having been predictable.” This crisis certainly checks all these boxes and I’m sure we’ll all learn a lot of lessons from this; let’s not repeat them. We’ve experienced these types of situations in the past – in fact more often than you may think. Since the year 2000, the world has experienced nine black swan events. These include, but are not limited to: 9/11, the dot. com crash, the 2008 financial meltdown, and the Fukushima nuclear disaster. After each one, the world has pulled together, coalesced and bounced back stronger. While these are unprecedented times, we will get through this and come back stronger. As leaders, we need to continue to communicate closely with our stakeholders, take preemptive action and stay calm. While you will have your sleepless nights, stick to your longterm plan and make sure you’re putting the health and safety of your employees first. Do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Yes, we are all in this together. Our business is sound and at Darley, we are here for you. Over the years, we’ve seen Team Darley shine during challenging times and I’m confident we will come out of this stronger. If there is anything we can be doing to support you, please contact us. NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND INNOVATIONS KEEPING YOU SAFER
New TS 2000 GPM Compact Single-Stage End Suction Pump
NEW
For several years the Design Engineering Team at Darley has been hard at work evaluating how we can continue to push the envelope in the fire pump world. The team has been fully engaged utilizing 3D Solid Modeling program enhancements, Computational Fluid Dynamics Programs (CFD), and validation through the use of rapid prototyping courtesy of 3D printing advances. As a result of these tireless efforts, the new TS design has achieved what our team at Darley once thought to be an impossibility. This revolutionary breakthrough in the engineering and design of the TS pump has allowed Darley to rate the TS Series pump at 2000 GPM while maintaining the same footprint and packaging options of our ultra-popular PS Series product line, which boasts ratings to 1500 GPM and reserve capacities exceeding 1800 GPM. Historically, Darley pumps have been industry leading in terms of design efficiency. The superior design characteristics in our impeller design and the high-strength gears we utilize throughout our product lines have allowed our customers to do more with less. Darley pumps The new compact TS pump provide higher ratings and excess flow capacities with minimal overall fits in the same pump size or spatial impact, maximizing performance. space as the PS pump. It is ideal for aerial and Darley maintains strict efficiency standards in terms of reserve capacity pumper applications. required in our maximum rating for a pump series. This practice provides a cushion on our pump ratings, which in turn provides a product to our customers that will withstand the test of time and rigors of service. For our Darley Demanders, this eliminates the necessity to de-rate pumps or the possibility of not passing required annual NFPA/UL pump tests as the wear and tear adds up over years of service. The TS pump is extremely smooth throughout the performance curve. Testing has validated single handline The TS pump is available as split-shaft midship, PTO performances at the lowest end of the TS pump curve through high flow/high pressures required in ARFF (NFPA or engine driven pump. 414) performance points at the top end of the curve. The TS Pump has passed with flying colors, exhibiting with DIMENSIONS minimal vibration or pulsation. Testing has proven, regardless of the application, this pump performs 33"L x 19"W x 32"H, 500 lbs. (227 kg) like a champion; a product worthy of being stamped with the Darley name. The TS series pump is available in Midship (TSM), PTO (TSP), or Engine (TSE) Driven offerings. The TS 2000 PERFORMANCE 2000 gpm (7571 L/M) @ 150 psi (10.3 bar) TS series will also be available on either our MagnaTrans™ or MegaTrans™ transmissions continuing 2000 gpm (7571 L/M) @ 165 psi (11.4 bar) to enhance the flexibility of the offering. 1000 gpm (5300 L/M) @ 250 psi (17.2 bar) For more information on the TS Series pumps, or to discuss the best pump solution to meet ARFF PERFORMANCE your department’s needs, please feel free to call Jason Darley on his cell at 715-456-9390 or email 2000 gpm (7571 L/M) @ 225 psi (15.5 bar) jasondarley@darley.com.

JUST ASK ENGINEERING Question? How do I know if my thermal relief valve is working? Asked by: Chad Moffat, President, Boise Mobile Equipment
Wayne Hable, P.E. Chief Engineer
Answer.
Darley’s new thermal relief valve is your answer. Our thermal relief valve is a device that ensures hot scalding water is not about to be discharged onto an unsuspecting person and also to safeguard the pump itself. We offer our thermal relief valve in two options: 12VDC or 24VDC. Our thermal relief valve opens when it senses 120˚F (49˚C) and allows the hot water to escape from the pump, assuming you have cooler water going into your pump to replace the hot water that has just escaped through the opened thermal relief valve. Essentially, our thermal relief valve assembly is a thermal switch that controls a ball valve which opens when the thermal switch senses hot water. This opened ball valve then lets hot water escape from the pump. Once enough hot water has been replaced by cold water, the thermal switch will close the ball valve which stops water from escaping the pump. This system will wait until it senses hot water again and repeat the process automatically. Now back to the question. Since many of you have never seen your thermal relief valve open up because you have never encountered hot water, Darley has just added a “Push To Test” button on the thermal relief valve’s pump panel plaque. Simply
waynehable@darley.com
NEW press this button and it forces open the ball valve that the thermal switch typically controls. Upon pressing, when there is positive water pressure within your pump, a panel light should ignite, and water will be seen escaping from your thermal relief valve. You now have a way to ensure your thermal relief valve opens. When you release the button, the light will go off and the ball valve will close if no hot water is detected in your pump. Thermal relief valves are an available option to add to any Darley pump, from our smallest portable to our largest midship pump. Some assembly will be required and you will need to provide electrical power for this device.

Good Time to Get Involved With Industry Organizations I’m fortunate that Darley has always believed in taking an active role in our industry. Bill Darley led the way serving as President of FAMA (Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association) and in later years, several others from our organization have followed. One of the strengths of our company is being both a manufacturer and a distributor, so my focus in recent years has been working with FEMSA (Fire and Emergency Manufacturers and Service Association) whose members include fire equipment manufacturers, dealers and industry media. I’ve always bought into the notion that you’ll get along in life by doing your fair share, but you’ll really succeed when you put in your fair share plus a little extra. This year I will have privilege of serving as the new FEMSA President. Being an active member in FEMSA and FAMA also means being an advocate for the fire service on a national level. AFG and SAFER grants have provided critical relief to the 1.056 million first responders, but every year funding levels come under pressure. • 50% of all fire departments lack enough portable radios to equip all responders on a shift • 53% of all fire departments cannot equip all firefighters on a shift with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) • 72% of all fire departments have at least one piece of personal protective clothing that is 10 years old This funding is particularly important given recent increases in terrorism worldwide and the recent increase in the severity of natural disasters - hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires and now the coronavirus. Local rescue departments are also dealing with the spike in drug overdoses as a result of the opioid and drug crises hitting communities. Hill Day and the CFSI dinner, in Washington, D.C., will be rescheduled for later in the year. A strong showing by our industry members goes a long way toward securing grants for the first responder community. We will need your involvement now more than ever. Darley Invests in Automated Balancer Last year, the Darley Pump Division created the Robotics Automation & Implementation Team. This team consists of multiple disciplines and the mission is simple; utilize state-of-the-art and innovative manufacturing tools, technology, equipment, processes, and techniques to improve the safety, fulfillment, and throughput of our operators. An ancillary benefit is improved cost to our external customers. In just one year, multiple projects have been implemented including an automated impeller balancer. Over the long history of Darley, impellers have been the heart of our product and special care has always been taken to ensure the highest quality and best value to our customer. Taking this component from a hand-balanced The automated impeller balancer piece to an automated piece, we were able to increase balances impellers in seconds. precision to an already highly efficient component. The automated balancer balances each impeller in seconds and within a fraction of a gram. This change, long term, will mean smoother operation, longer bearing life and an even better product life cycle.
