Darley Awarded Largest Contract in Company History Continuing a Legacy of Government Contracting
On January 5, 2021, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) awarded Darley Defense a contract on the 5th iteration of the Special Operational Equipment (SOE) Tailored Logistics Support (TLS) Program. This contract will allow Darley to continue its legacy of contributing to the Nation’s defense. In World War II, Darley was awarded the Army-Navy “E” Award for excellence in production. Today, Darley continues to produce, but the TLS contract is about distribution, requiring different operational excellence and expertise. As part of the contract, Darley is one of six “prime vendors” tasked with vetting the supply chain and logistically facilitating the sale of commercial-off-the-shelf products to Federal customers. This is exciting because the contract is designed for rapid procurement of existing products, so delivered solutions are cutting edge and don’t have to wait for the long traditional procurement cycles. The title of the contract does not limit who can purchase through it, Federal, State, and local entities all qualify to purchase through TLS. The scope of work under the SOE TLS program includes the total logistics support for the special operational equipment requirements of DLA ©DVIDS customers to include military installations, federal agencies, and other authorized DLA customers located worldwide. In the past 12 years, the defense division has grown to a team of about 50 employees, many of whom are outside sales reps. Most of these reps are veterans of the U.S. military and bring with them tactical knowledge and an understanding of how the equipment they sell is used. This commitment to relationship-based sales is also part of the Darley legacy of excellent customer service. As the team grows, so does our ©DVIDS need to support that team. Changes to the company Darley Defense rapidly procures commercialoff-the-shelf products to Federal customers have included: an increased through the SOE TLS program. line of credit to finance more large defense opportunities and processing mapping to become IS0 9001:2015 certified to better serve the contract and our customers. Leader development training and team expansion are also top of the list for 2021 to further increase our competitive advantage in this market. Last year, Darley Defense facilitated the sale of over $600 million in equipment and services and our goal is to make that $1 billion by 2025. “This contract is really our license to sell to the DOD,” said Paul Darley. “We are proud to be able to serve our defense and other federal customers for another 10 years under this milestone contract. Our team is strong, and we are well-suited to assist our military customers in meeting their capabilities for Darley was awarded the Army-Navy “E” Award for excellence in production during WWII. their ever-evolving mission sets.”

A Company With A Soul For the past year, we have been speaking of the pandemic metaphorically as a baseball game, continually asking ourselves: What inning are we in? With the remarkable vaccine development, and with ball parks across America opening, I think we can cautiously say we’re headed into the top of the 9th inning. Everyone has been impacted by Covid-19, but hopefully you have found some silver linings like focusing on the important relationships in your life. As a relationship driven company, we’ve found innovative ways to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones. We have adapted and remained agile. As we reestablish our cadence and battle rythym, our team is starting to safely meet once again with our customers and supply partners. We’ve also learned that we can effectively meet via video conference and embrace other adaptations that make us more cost effective. While we remain focused on taking care of our customers and employees, we have also looked inward and used this as a time to learn and focus on internal improvements. We have asked ourselves questions like: When you get close to your customer, do you use the information you learn to your advantage, or to theirs? In addressing this question and others, it affirmed that we were truly a company with a soul! We have amazing Darley team members who are committed to serving our first responder customers – our North Star. We recently adopted and kicked off our new five-year Strategic Plan – Operation B25. This is our employees’ plan to grow to $1 billion in revenue by 2025. The world has changed forever, and like monumental changes in the past, we as a company, and society in general, have to embrace the positive changes, and leave our bad habits and old-school methods behind us. Radical changes require a catalyst. The more seismic the event, the more sweeping the change. We will continue to embrace the good and shed the bad, and we will grow even stronger to serve you for generations to come. Together, we’ve got this.

FEATURED CUSTOMER: TORONTO FIRE SERVICE After being awarded a multi-year contract for pumpers for the city of Toronto, ON, Dependable Emergency Vehicles in Brampton, ON, recently began delivering the first order of 16 vehicles to Toronto Fire Service (TFS). The contract called for a 2000 GPM single stage pump. Not so ironically, the Darley EM 2000 single stage had been proving itself prior to this bid for several years on the TFS training grounds in two pumpers previously built by Dependable. The Darley EM 2000 officially passed its training, and is Recent Toronto pumpers were built by Dependable Emergency now on the job full-time Vehicles, on Spartan FC-94 cabs sold by Dependable’s Pino Natale and are equipped with Darley EM pumps. in Toronto. Toronto Division Chief, Rob Anselmi, worked with Dependable’s Pino Natale and team to design and lay out the vehicles. One of the changes in this round of Toronto’s builds was moving to a narrower body than previous builds, matching the 96" width of the Spartan Metro Star Chassis. This change would provide more room for maneuvering through the crowded streets of Canada’s largest city. Toronto is also the fifth largest city in North America. Toronto needed a narrower cab and the climate necessitated an enclosed pump panel, which created an opportunity for Darley and Dependable to work together to develop a custom solution. The result was the creation of a new Darley suction nipple, which reduces the total width of the pump by over 4.5". It is now available on all Darley full cast midship products, including the EM 2000 and the LDM 1750, as well as on our end suction designs where needed. Our most recent improvement has been several years in the making. Utilizing our enhanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) programs, we slightly redesigned two of our PS series impellers and put them into EM pump casings. The results have been incredible. The pump is capable of 2250 GPM @ 165 PSI in parallel (flow) mode, and over 600 GPM @ 600 PSI in series (pressure) mode when supplied as a two-stage. Deliveries on the EM 2250 pump will begin soon. If you are writing specs today demanding higher flows, looking to push the envelope in reserve capacity on a 2000 rated pump, or enhancing your pressure and flow capabilities at the top of ever growing skyscrapers, you should consider the new EM 2250. Question?
What risks are associated with electric vehicle fires? Asked by: Kirk McKinzie, Former Captain, Consumnes FD, CA Kyle Darley Manager of Technology, Research & Development
Answer.
With the emergence of electric vehicles (EVs) on the roadways, the fire industry is facing new risks. The risks are largely attributed to high voltage batteries which power EVs. High voltage EV batteries come in many variations but are most commonly of the lithium-ion type. The batteries, which are generally constructed of a series of cells, can enter a state called thermal runaway. When this happens, the battery’s cells burn continuously until de-energized. Firefighters engaging thermal runaway related vehicle fires most commonly use excessively large volumes of water to cool the battery’s cells and suppress the fire. In many cases the battery will re-ignite at a later time due to residual energy stored in the battery’s cells. Another major concern presented by EVs is the risk of electrocution. Voltage levels in EV batteries commonly range from 200 - 400 volts which can be deadly. Firefighters responding to vehicle fires need to assess voltage related risk prior to engaging the incident. At a minimum, this means knowing where high voltage wires are run; knowing if there is stray voltage being conducted throughout

the vehicle; and understanding how to safely extract patients in times of need. As auto manufacturers continue to leverage new battery technology, the risks associated with EV fires will continue to evolve. Darley is in continual pursuit of solutions which mitigate EV related hazards. Our goal is to provide product solutions which improve the safety and preparedness of global fire and emergency service personnel. If there is anything we can be doing to enhance your ability to address EV fires, please reach out to us.
Isolate Smoke and Fire within Seconds with the Car Fire Blanket With the increased number of electric vehicles on the road today and projections for the majority of cars having lithium ion and other special batteries in the near future, first responders are faced with new challenges handling disasters. Battery fires present unique fire hazards and while there is no emergency response guide or accepted way to handle these fires, we are offering a way to Contain - Control - Isolate (CCI) them preventing fire spread and further damage from toxic gas and smoke and the risk of electrocution. The use of a fire blanket cuts off the oxygen supply, provides initial knock down, and lowers the temperature, reducing exposure risk and further disaster. NFPA tests conducted on three electric vehicle (EV) fires determined between 1160 and 2639 gallons of water were needed to properly cool the battery which is not something most first-due engines have on their apparatus. If your department responds to an EV fire on a highway, sufficient water is not usually available to cool the fire and prevent reignition unless you have a tanker/tender responding. If you have an EV fire in a NEW parking garage, tunnel or other areas where exposure risks are high and there is not enough water available, there are high risks of reignition and fire spread. By using the CCI method, your department can mitigate the risks and buy time for determining a further response strategy. In addition to the immediate fire dangers batteries on EVs present, vehicles involved in a crash often ignite hours or days after the crash where the battery is compromised. There are reports of batteries starting on fire on tow trucks when more oxygen is introduced and after damaged batteries are submerged in sea water for days. The fire blanket is a great The car fire blanket prevents fire spread and further damage from toxic gas and smoke and the risk of electrocution. tool for departments to have on hand when dealing with an EV fire. Not only will these blankets handle EV fires, but they are also effective in controlling battery fires in warehouses, factories, or encountering a unique fire hazard that a fire extinguisher may not be capable of handling. This creates many challenges for fire departments due to numerous requirements relating to the mechanics of delivery, training levels of responding firefighters and manpower levels, plus some legalities. While there is often a water supply available, the capacity for fire flow in rural areas is not there, and relying on gravity alone is not enough. In the those moments when you must refill your tanker as fast as possible, fire departments need greater assurance. This is why more departments are moving towards the Hydrant Booster. The Hydrant Booster is a decentralized pump station that connects to a water supply that boosts the pressure at a consistent rate.
