Darley Launches HomelandSecurityEquipment.com For almost 100 years, Darley has been focused on serving the world’s emergency services. In fact, our mission statement reads, “Our mission is to passionately serve the world’s first responder and tactical communities by providing high quality, safe and innovative products with unmatched commitment and service.” In January 2012, Darley launched a new website aimed at homeowners, businesses and just about any organization looking to prepare for emergency situations. If you’ve read our earlier editions of the Darley Times or watched our monthly videos “Inside Darley,” you are aware that natural, technological and terrorist acts have significantly increased over the past 30 years. According to Executive Vice President & COO Peter Darley, “We recognize this trend and found that there was no company, with the emergency response background of Darley, focused on this vast market.” Darley’s new website is unique because it features equipment for almost any kind of disaster or emergency situation. Customers can easily locate the equipment they need by the type of disaster they are anticipating. According to Darley Web Department Manager, Joe Catania, “A customer can search keywords such as Tornado, Earthquake, Hurricane, etc., and find just the equipment needed for that incident.“ Darley has never really marketed our products to the “masses” This new website allows customers so it’s a change in our business approach. Perhaps we should be to select products based on different types of disasters. rewriting our mission statement. Darley is currently in discussions with several major federal government organizations that are looking at partnership links available on the new Darley site, www.homelandsecurityequipment.com.

High-Tech Products Catch the Eye of the Military In recent months, Darley has been awarded several major US Defense contracts in excess of $20 million. Two of these awards are for new technology products to support America’s military personnel in their war fighting and firefighting efforts. In a contract valued at $5 million, Darley will be providing soldiers in Afghanistan with remote control robots from partner Macro USA. The Macro Armadillo will be used for searching vehicles at check points, surveillance of structures prior to entering, and detonating IEDs on roads traveled by our soldiers. To support our Defense firefighters, the US Air Force recently placed orders with Darley for up to 212 Pyrolance L1000 fire protection systems. The total contract is valued at approximately $7.5 million. The Pyrolance L1000 uses Ultra High Pressure (UHP) in a patented technology to penetrate walls and other barriers by flowing water at 10 gpm (38 lpm) with a pressure of 1,500 psi (100 BAR) at The Macro speeds of 400 mph (650 kph) through a Armadillo has specially designed lance that integrates granite both DoD and first abrasive. Jim Podolske, of Tyndall Air Force Base said, “The units will be placed at every US Air Force base across America and The Pyrolance around the world.” Jim also placed several other large orders L1000 uses Ultra High Pressure (UHP). with Darley in late 2011 for Kirila Fire Training Facilities Inc.

From the Office of

PAUL DARLEY Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life It’s always humbling to meet with America’s heroes – those who serve in the US military and fire service. It’s an honor and privilege to be in an industry where we can assist those who give so selflessly. Kurt Vonnegut, writer and humanist, realized their contributions to society when he wrote, “I can think of no more stirring symbol of man's humanity to man than a fire engine.” In this age of entitlement, the work ethic and desire to help others exhibited by these heroes is so refreshing. It’s in strong contrast to the “Occupy Movement” demonstrators. One group says, “What can I do for America?” and the other says, “What can America do for me?” I’m not sure, but I think these demonstrators are upset that companies make a profit. On the very first day of business school, you learn that the primary purpose of any business is to generate a profit. Is this wrong? I distinctly remember a management meeting about 15 years ago, when we all filled out surveys which included a question, “What is the purpose of our business?” All managers, except for one, answered that our primary purpose was to make a profit. Bill Darley disagreed, stating, “We are about serving our customers, creating good jobs and giving back. If we do that, the profits will come.” The room was silent. Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” It’s a profound question, but one that is easily answered by those we serve, and by Bill Darley. Today, our company has a formal Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Plan. In short, we try to be good corporate citizens. Part of the plan includes supporting over 250 charities each year with most of our giving directed to the communities we serve and live in. While we don’t support these causes for any personal gain, it’s interesting to see the good that comes back to us. As we look to new markets such as water purification and homeland security equipment for homeowners, we always consider the alignment with our CSR plan. Will we be serving humanity? But we also ask, can we do it profitably? It’s kind of the chicken or the egg dilemma. Bill Darley was right -- if we don’t continue to take care of you, our customers, we won’t make a profit. If a company is not profitable, it can’t continue to serve its customers, create jobs and make contributions to society. Either way, we’re going to continue to be focused on you, our customers. If it ever seems like we’re not, I hope you’ll let me know.

DARLEY INTRODUCES NEW BREAKTHROUGHS FOR 2012 SEE THEM AT THE FDIC

PSD 1500 “Silent Pak” Could Change Everything The new PSD “Silent Pak” pump allows for a 1500 gpm NFPA rated pump without a pump transmission! After working closely with Chelsea and Allison for months, on December 1, 2011, Darley received approval for a 1500 gpm rating from Chelsea when using their Model 870XAFJP-B5XV series PTO with a 200% ratio and an Allison EVS 3000 Series transmission. The engine speed needed is only 2049 rpm, so it can be matched with most engines on the market capable of producing at least 225 net horsepower. The Allison transmission must be ordered with the 1:00 PTO provision, but the pump can run off the 8:00 or 1:00 position. This new pump PSD “Silent Pak” is: Quiet – No transmission to generate pump noise Maintenance Free – No maintenance Compact – Pump weighs only 225 pounds required for the pump when ordered Economical – Priced at a fraction of the cost of with a Darley mechanical seal conventional splitshaft midship pumps

Darley Awarded Major Pump Contracts for the Department of Defense W.S. Darley & Co. has been serving the US Department of Defense for over 80 years. During World War II, Darley provided thousands of pumps and hundreds of fire apparatus to the US Army and US Navy. At the end of the war, these pumps and trucks were left throughout the world and became a springboard for Darley’s international business, which today can account for as much as 50% of our core fire business in a given year. In the past 30 years, Darley pumps have been used on most major military contracts for fire apparatus including the P18, P22, P23, P25, P26 as well as the TFFT and HWATT programs. In 1994, Darley was awarded the P100 contract with the US Navy. Since that time, Darley has delivered more than 5000 pumps to the US Navy, US Coast Guard and more than 35 other navies around the world. According to a US Navy spokesperson, “The Darley P100 replaced the Hale P250 pump and as a result of that change, we were able to shut down our maintenance and repair facilities that were needed to support the P250.” In 2011, the Navy renewed the P100 The P6 was recently featured on contract for five years. the cover article in Coast Guard In 2001, the US Coast Guard (USCG) awarded Darley the P6 contract for dewatering magazine. pumps. Darley Selects JD Edwards to Better Serve Customers

BILL DARLEY I can’t accept not trying! And wherever I go, I’m going with my heart. I’ve tried my entire Bill Darley career at Darley and Chairman of the Board in my personal life to E: billdarley@darley.com C: 708-902-0021 listen to people first – then listen, suggest, decide or listen more, and now more than ever that’s important due to all of the challenging changes at Darley. Did you ever see a fish mounted on a wall with its mouth shut? It could have been easy this month to say I’m not going to write a column. However, Newton’s Law of Inertia immediately came to mind “objects at rest tend to stay at rest.” So keep moving! Five years ago I made a note as follows: If the student surpasses the teacher, that is an honor to the teacher. I now feel that is happening at Darley – that’s good! At Darley and in our personal lives, it’s important to question everything, to take nothing for granted, and always to seek the truth. A lot is written about ethics which all boils down to what we do and decide each day. As Thoreau commented, “Shall I go to heaven or a-fishing.” I concluded heaven can wait. I have also noted with a smile years ago the following about retirement! It’s half the money (or less) and twice the spouse! (With Fran, that’s wonderful). Why did God make the world round? So you couldn’t look too far down the road – that’s okay. Have a great 2012 – it’s opportunity time! I promote all of you to be iconoclasts – “they do what others say can’t be done.” How? By seeing things differently. A closing thought – do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. Congratulations to Bill and Fran Darley on their 25th wedding anniversary. They celebrated the day with their entire family by preparing and serving food at a soup kitchen for the homeless in Chicago.

By: John C. Long, IT Director If you were to take a look at our Strategic Direction, you would see that one of the areas that we focus upon is Technology. This includes much of the infrastructure that we use for running our business. Thanks to our Darley Demanders, our business has grown tremendously over the past few years. During that time we also acquired our Odin Foam Division and our Ohler Division. Each division was running its own separate ERP system. The systems either did not talk to each other or shared information on a very limited basis. We determined it was time for a new ERP system that could Darley’s new Enterprise Research be used by all divisions of the company and that would be Planning (ERP) System is scalable for our anticipated growth. highly scalable toward future growth. After a fairly extensive search and vetting, we selected Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One. We started the first phase of implementation in March of 2011. We went live in our Itasca Corporate headquarters in October 2011. We are now beginning the second phase of the implementation at our Chippewa Falls, WI and Janesville, IA locations. Some have compared installing a new system to getting a root canal. It is expensive, invasive, and painful. Sometimes there are complications. Sometimes the pain lingers on after the procedure is done. But, in the end, the pain is gone and the tooth is saved. We have gone through this in Itasca. Most of the pain has gone away. We are now starting to be able to take advantage of some of the new functionality that this software offers. Our customers are now seeing a new and improved invoice document and a new monthly statement. It is now much easier for us to send documents by e-mail. The software has the capability for our customers and suppliers to connect through a portal. They will be able to use the portal to check on their orders. We don’t have the portal turned on yet. That might not come online until after we have the main features of the software up and running in all locations. This is just one of our continuing investments in technology. Our engineering department has been heavily involved in a new program to analyze and improve the design of our pump impellers. We at Darley will continue to move forward in all areas of our Strategic Direction so that we can continue to serve the world’s first responder and tactical communities by providing highquality, safe, and innovative products.

EMPLOYEE PROFILE Shane Sullivan began his career at Darley as an engineering intern in May 2007. One year later, he joined us as a full-time Design Engineer after graduating from UW Stout with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology Mechanical Design. Shane continued his education while working at Darley and earned a Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering in 2010. According to Shane, “Working for Darley has not only been educational but extremely rewarding. This family-owned business displays a level of commitment to its customers and employees that is unmatched in the industry. It is great to work in an engineering department that strives to put out the highest quality products to the fire fighting industry. I have learned a lot in my time here and look forward to many more years working for Darley.” Shane has been advancing in his personal life as well. In October 2011, he married his long-time sweetheart Lauren. They live in Chippewa Falls and together are raising their son, Ryder. A LOOK AT A NEXT GENERATION DARLEY

Sophie Darley Hi, my name is Sophie Darley and I am 17 years old. This summer I was fortunate enough to have the amazing opportunity to go to Ecuador with my Dad on a medical mission trip. We went to remote poor towns outside of Quito. The trip was the most eye-opening experience of my life. While in Ecuador, we helped by taking vital signs, making patient files and my personal favorite, giving fluoride treatments to kids and then getting to play with them while their parents saw the doctors. The people in Ecuador were so appreciative of our help. It made me feel good to help them. I would like to be a teacher when I grow up. For the last 6 months, every day after school I’ve participated in a student teaching program with first grade students. This trip solidified my feelings about this career path. I think a job where I’m helping kids would be the best and I would love getting up for work every morning. After experiencing this poverty, I feel so blessed for everything I have been given in life. If you ever have a chance to do something like this, I would highly recommend that you do it. Sophie Darley is the youngest daughter of Paul & Heidi Darley. 1-800-4DARLEY • 1-800-323-0244

Darley Sales Rep Survives Nightmare in Uganda In November 2011, Darley Sales Representative Ed Wright visited Uganda while on a humanitarian mission to help train local fire services on EMT and firefighting. While there, Ed and his team found themselves at the mercy of armed bandits. They were driving from the airport to Mubende, loaded with much-needed medical equipment and teaching supplies when they were ambushed. Armed bandits stopped them on the highway. Ed says, “All our money and goods were taken. It is rather humbling to have a machete held to your throat while you are being restrained on the ground.” Amazingly, no one was injured and the police acted quickly and apprehended the bandits. Ed comments, “The police obtained a sniffer dog from a neighboring town's barracks and had four of the five bandits arrested. Most of our items and money were returned within hours — wildly unheard of in that area of the world. I pray for their souls, as Ed Wright shown with firefighters in Uganda. they face a very dark and brief future under Ugandan law.”
