DLA Awards Darley $872 Million Tailored Logistic Support (TLS) Program Contract Darley received its first US Department of Defense Fire Equipment TLS contract over six years ago. Based largely on Darley’s past performance, the United States Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) awarded the contract to us again on November 26, 2013. Darley is one of six awardees of the Fire and Emergency Services Equipment (F&ESE) Tailored Logistics Support Program (TLSP). The contract is valued at $872 million over its two-year base period, and has three-option years. It is an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract. The multiple-award contract supports the DLA and their customers. Darley has been serving this marketplace for over 80 years and has a long-standing relationship with the thousands of military firefighting and emergency services personnel around the world. According to Darley Executive V. P., James Long, “While we probably will not be awarded the entire estimated value of the contract, it is significant. This has been our largest and fastest growing market segment over the past six years. We are proud to support our US Troops.” Darley is now one of 500 largest government contractors.

US Army Testing Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis PuriFire® System
Hydration in the military is a key requirement particularly for our troops in arid environments or locations near the ocean. The transportation of water continues to be a major logistical problem, costing millions of dollars and putting our troops at risk. Desalination with Reverse Osmosis (RO) is one solution that is being put into use by all branches of the military. One of the challenges with standard RO technology is that it takes a lot of energy and has not been very portable. The PuriFire® Versa Sea Pak 200 is a portable desalination system, weighing just 70 lbs., packaged in a rugged Pelican case. It will run on solar power providing over 8 gallons per hour of purified water from virtually any fresh, brackish or saltwater source. The heart of this purification unit is a patented energy recovery system that allows it to process water, requiring only 108 watts of power. The system is also fully-integrated with 2590 NATO batteries and two 124 watt solar panels enabling self-sustained long-term deployment and operation in low light conditions. The PuriFire® Versa Sea Pak 200 will help lighten the load of our soldiers and ensure reliable water purification in the harshest environments. Darley is proud to support our military with innovative products like the PuriFire® Versa Sea Pak 200 that ensures the safety and well-being of our troops in any location. Leadership Under Fire By most accounts, the US economy appears to be back on its feet. The housing market is strong again, the stock market recently hit new highs, and unemployment continues to decline. Municipalities lag the general economy by 18-24 months. In 2013, cities reported that they were in better financial condition than at any time in the previous six years, according to the League of Cities Annual Survey. This was based largely on reductions in spending and increasing tax revenue. After delaying capital expenditures for years, fire departments are beginning to order fire apparatus and other capital equipment at an accelerated rate. We’re not out of it yet, but these are good signs for an industry that has seen a 40% decline since 2008. During these hard times, leadership has been tested – on all fronts. Everyone from city managers, fire chiefs, military personnel and business leaders has had to make difficult decisions to keep their organizations intact. The successful ones pivoted – a business term now being used to describe how organizations adapt their strategies to changing times. Organizations that adapt should bounce back stronger than ever. During these times, effective leaders stayed cool. I am reminded of “Joe Cool” Montana. In the 1989 Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals, he led his team, the San Francisco 49ers, down field 92 yards to victory through his authentic leadership in a time of crisis. With seconds to go in the game and down 3 points, he looked at his team in the huddle and said, “Hey, isn’t that John Candy sitting in the first row?” At that point, everyone knew that Joe Cool had the situation under control and they were going to win. They did. He had incredible resilience and still holds the NFL record for fourth quarter comeback wins. As all leaders know, no one does it alone. Teamwork is critical in all aspects of life. I often think of Joe Montana in times of crisis. His authentic leadership style – he was just himself and he didn’t panic. He possessed a sense of self-awareness and confidence that motivated his team and made people want to follow him. He loved the game, and while fiercely competitive, he didn’t take himself too seriously. When leaders stay cool while under fire, amazing things can happen. At Darley, our leaders are going to continue to pivot and stay cool while under fire. It’s exciting to see where we’re headed together with you, our customers and employees, at heart. We’ll continue to have fun too.

DARLEY AD CAMPAIGN The new Darley ad campaign is an extension of our popular advertisement featuring Paul Darley’s home phone number. This time, it’s a picture of his cell phone and publicizes his cell phone number, in addition to his home phone. There’s no hiding now, Paul. The ad shows Paul’s real cell phone sitting on his nightstand with his nightly reading. The ad conveys the passion and accessibility of Paul and the entire team at Darley. The ad reads, “This is Paul Darley’s cell phone. He never turns off the ringer.” When asked how many calls he gets, Paul says, “When we first ran the ad, I received quite a few, but most were people just checking to see if it was really my home number. I would often ask if they won the bet against the other guys in the station. My wife, Heidi, did make me move the phone to my side of the bed. It was a small price to pay.” The Darley marketing mix incorporates a Darley’s newest ad campaign features blend of web, tradeshow, catalogs and printed Paul Darley’s cell phone number. ads. Lots of research seems to show that print ads are not as effective as they were years ago. That may be, but Darley continues to place print ads and this ad continues to receive strong readership ratings in ad impact studies. MADE IN

FEATURED PRODUCT Self-Testing Hydrant Booster System Recently, Fire Chief Anthony Martinez set out to improve the fire protection capabilities of the Village of Corrales, a small, rural village outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Specifically, Chief Martinez wanted to provide the village with its first fire hydrants. By doing this, it would ensure a reliable method to refill fire tanker trucks at a faster rate than the current gravity setup permitted. Chief Martinez had four goals he wanted to achieve that the Darley Self-Testing Hydrant Booster exceeded: 1) Deliver 1000 Turn your water source into a hydrant gpm @ 50 psi, 2) Reliability, system at low cost. 3) Easy to operate and maintain, and 4) Fit within the limited budget. Along with these specifications, the booster system is calibrated by the push of a single button and requires no manual control settings, ever. Setup time is minimal. Once operating, it will automatically perform a self-test twice a month. This panel has the ability to have its own IP web address and can email test results to three different email addresses. This patented self-testing process is a test based solely on a true drop in pressure, followed by real-time monitoring of the pump’s automatic reaction and performance to that drop. No other system is more ready or dependable to provide your department with a reliable water supply. The new Darley Self-Testing Hydrant Booster is the solution FIRE to on-site water demands. Darley CAFS - International Market Leader Darley was the first company to introduce Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS) to the world’s fire service back in 1984. Since that time, CAFS has continued to gain worldwide acceptance and Darley has never lost its first-mover advantage. CAFS is simply adding compressed air and foam solution to the fire stream to increase the effectiveness of water. Darley offers two brands of CAFS - Darley AutoCAFS™ and ODIN® Foam. Darley AutoCAFS™ utilize an air compressor that is driven off the pump transmission. The Darley AutoCAFS™ is available on virtually every Darley pump whether is a splitshaft midship, PTO driven, engine driven or rear mount. Compressors are available up to 220 CFM. When CAFS is added to our pumps, we add the letter “C” to the pump model. For example, our KSM becomes the KSMC. These systems are manufactured at our plant in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. ODIN® Foam was acquired by Darley in 1997 and offers a complete line of PTO driven and modular engine driven complete systems ideal for wildland and urban interface. These systems are manufactured at our Ohler/ODIN® plant in Janesville, Iowa. Darley AutoCAFS™ and ODIN® units can now be found in over 50 countries around the world with thousands of systems in service. A lot of our success has been based on traveling to countries and explaining the features and benefits of CAFS. Dave Maier, General Manager of ODIN® Foam, recently traveled to Egypt to educate the fire service. Dave was one of the founders of ODIN® Foam when it was purchased by Darley in 1997. Dave retired on December 31, 2013 but has agreed to stay on in a consulting role for at least one year. During his time at Darley, he traveled extensively from South Africa to China. Dave commented, “My time at Darley has been wonderful. I’ve enjoyed getting to travel around the globe and helping society through the adoption of the best Cairo, Egypt has adopted Darley CAFS for industrial applications. technology to help them save more lives.” Bo Zhang, General Manager of Darley China, has arguably sold more ODIN® and Darley AutoCAFS™ than anyone else in the world. He continues to educate and train customers across China. In 2013, Darley provided the Henan Province Fire Department with 52 KSMC 1000 pumps with 120 CFM compressors. According to Bo, “One of the first Darley CAFS units was sold to China in 1996. There are currently over 1000 Darley CAFS and ODIN® units in service today. Darley AutoCAFS™ is wellknown throughout fire departments in China.” China has over 1000 Darley CAFS systems To find a system that’s just right for you, contact Troy, our in service, including these 52 for the Henan Province Fire Department. FIRE BOAT SPECIAL ISSUE JUST ASK ENGINEERING Question? What pumps does Darley offer for Fire Boats? Asked by: Chief Chris Berndt Western Taney County Fire District, MO
Answer. Michael C. Ruthy VP Engineering mikeruthy@darley.com
Darley has been furnishing pumps for marine applications for decades, and we have a firm understanding of the marine environment and its requirements. Our experience with the US Navy and the development of our P-100 model pump, which had stringent weight limitations as well as serious corrosion protection concerns, led to an appreciation of these issues. We have many proprietary coatings available for engine blocks, exhaust components, pumps, and other components to ensure a long life even in the tough marine environment. We offer models driven by gasoline engines, which are preferred by builders using outboard engines, as well as pumps for builders of larger vessels, who prefer diesel drives. Our smallest application to date has been our 2BE21H, capable of 100 GPM @ 135 psi up to our PS series capable of over 1800 GPM @ 150 psi. Our ZS line, capable of flows over 3500 GPM @ 150 psi will be available by April and can be seen at FDIC. We offer both totally bronze pumps, for the ultimate in salt water corrosion resistance, or also a hard anodized aluminum with special coatings, when weight is a critical factor. Many of the engines we use can be configured with marinized coatings, and some are marine engines direct from the manufacturer. For use in salt water, pump shafts are furnished in 316 stainless steel or 17-4 PH stainless, when even greater strength is needed.

I’ve had the pleasure of sailing with him, Top: LSED 1000 shown on a KEM though I recall we engaged the engine. Above: HE500 drawing on a Steyr engine. diesel motor for the ride back. In many coastal markets, such as Tacoma, WA, we’ve seen a need to augment our offerings of pumps and trucks to include fire boats. Fire boats have become more popular in recent years due to homeland security grants and concerns. We work with builders of any size vessel, so let us know your needs and we can put you in touch with multiple ship builders, worldwide, that can work with you to meet your specific needs. From fresh water to salt water, Darley is ready to provide your best solution. We’re a proven provider to the most well-known names in the maritime industry. Make your next vessel phenomenal. Darley Pumps - The Choice of Fire Boat Manufacturers Darley pumps have been the pump of choice for boat manufacturers worldwide. Not only have we supplied 1000s of portable pumps to Coast Guards and Navies worldwide, but also to domestic and international boat builders who demand the best for both fresh and salt water applications whether they be portable or for demands of ratings exceeding 3500 GPM at 150 psi. Darley has the expertise to assist in any application. Coast to coast, the ZS 3500 is the choice for the highest flows in the Fire Boat market. Shown here are some of the best in the business.

From the Office of
James Long Force Multipliers Several years, ago I read the book, “Delivering Happiness,” by Tony Hsieh the CEO of Zappos. The company started as an online shoe retailer with almost no sales in 1999 and grew to over $1 billion before being acquired by Amazon a decade later. Many articles have been written about the culture at Zappos (along with their award-winning customer service), but what really struck me was how this culture carried through to their supply chain. “The typical industry approach is to treat vendors like the enemy. Show them no respect, don’t return their phone calls, make them wait for scheduled appointments, and make them buy the meals. Scream at them, blame them, abuse them… anything to get as much as possible and squeeze out every last dime.” “Instead of pounding the vendors, we collaborate. We don’t believe that negotiations need to be an arm-wrestling match. The benefits we’ve reaped from concentrating on building relationships with our vendors are endless. We respect and value our relationships, and want to see each other do well.” “We realize the importance of communication, and if our partners are trying to reach us, we need to be responsive. Our customers expect this type of responsiveness from us, and so should our vendors.” At Darley, our Core Values are Integrity, Customer Focus, Relationships Based on Respect, Empowerment/ Recognition, Innovation and Celebration. These values were just not written as an internal document, but as a statement on how we universally conduct business. In our Defense Division, we frequently use the term “force multiplier,” which means fully utilizing our partners as an extension of the Darley team. Because most manufacturers are keenly focused on building great products, they typically have smaller sales teams and lack coverage, especially to the end user. Successful manufacturers know that by building a strong dealer network, their sales will grow exponentially. Many times, new product introductions, better efficiencies and cost savings, customer service levels and training are the result of a collaborative effort between Darley and our suppliers. Tony Hsieh adds, “Because of our relationships, vendors we’re not currently working with are eager to partner with us. We have many brands on our site that customers can’t find anywhere else online, and it’s because of the trust we’ve built in the industry…” That sounds a lot like Darley.

A LOOK AT A NEXT GENERATION DARLEY
Maggie Darley When my co-workers find out that I am a part of the fourth generation successful family business they often ask why I am not working there. It seems like the easy decision to join the family business after graduating from college; however, there are many benefits to gaining experience before joining. Currently, I am 1 of 20 corporate recruiters who have the task of recruiting for our entire 1,500 employee company. I have been able to experience much upward mobility in my company over the past 2 years and have gained an array of knowledge and business acumen that many people may not learn in decades. One of the top reasons that I think getting outside work experience before joining the family business is beneficial is because it helps to define your role within the company. As a member of the Darley family I want to ensure that when I join the company I will be able to use my skills to make meaningful contributions. Right now, I want to test myself to see and to learn where my attributes will best fit into the company. In my current role, I am learning amazing interpersonal skills, time management, and creating a great work ethic. With these kinds of skills I know I can be successful in a variety of areas, but I am particularly interested in sales at Darley. I look forward to one day using my talents and work ethic to help Darley continue to grow and to make a positive impact on the company for years to come. Maggie is the daughter of Paul and Heidi Darley. There are currently 33 fourth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.
