Major Contracts Fuel Darley’s Growth Over the past 90 years, Darley has received major contracts from fire and defense customers around the world which catapulted our business to new heights. This year has been no exception. During World War II, Darley delivered thousands of pumps and hundreds of fire engines to the U.S. Military, earning us the Army/Navy E Award three times for our excellence in performance of war production. After the war, those vehicles where left in countries around the Darley provided hundreds of trucks and world and this became the catalyst thousands of pumps during WW II, earning us the Army/Navy E Award three times. for our international business. Over the past 25 years, Darley has provided over ten thousand pumps to our U.S. Department of Defense, from the P100 firefighting pump for U.S. Navy to the LE 600 fuel transfer pump to the U.S. Marine Corps. Today, larger cities’ fire departments are making the shift to Darley pumps more than ever before. These include cities like Boston, Charlotte, and Miami-Dade just to name a few. The entire FDNY fleet of boats now has Darley at the heart of their vessels. While our history has been mostly filled with orders for firefighting equipment, we’ve recently expanded our product line extensively. In 2016 alone, we shipped over 250 pumps to West-Mark for the U.S. Air Force to be used in dust control at remote airports. (See West-Mark article on page 5.) After rigorous testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground in September 2016, Darley was awarded a multimillion dollar contract through FEMA to provide residential fire sprinkler systems for mobile housing units to assist displaced residents in Baton Rouge and other disaster hit areas. The first contract, valued up to $48 million, is for Ultra Low Visible Concealable Body Armor (ULV CBA). This system consists of concealable vests and both hard and soft armor that can be used interchangeably. Darley developed the system in conjunction with our suppliers to combat specific threats seen by our troops overseas. The second contract is for Generation Two Advanced Bomb Suits (GEN II ABS). In the Phase I program of the contract, Darley is delivering lighter weight bomb suits with better visibility and an integrated cooling system for testing by EOD soldiers and the U.S. Army. DARLEY TIMES From the Office of

PAUL DARLEY

Here’s to the Underdog There is a lot of excitement in our hometown of Chicago this summer. The talk around town is that our beloved Chicago Cubs baseball team have the best record in baseball and are favored to win their first World Series since 1908. They are led by Joe Maddon, an inspirational coach, and the players are staying humble and having fun. The Cubs have become America’s Team. They have such a loyal following that there are often more Cub fans in the park when they play on the road, away from the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. The love of the Cubs is a strange phenomenon. Historically, they have rarely had a winning team. Their seasons tend to be fraught with heartbreaking defeats, coupled with some bad luck. Yet their fans are among the most loyal of any sports team. Maybe it’s the love of an underdog that keeps the fans so committed. I can’t help but notice some parallels between Darley and the Cubs. Our company was founded in 1908, but more importantly, we both have a ton of momentum, incredibly loyal fans and are, in many respects, the underdog. The USA fire service market is the strongest it’s been in over six years and our fire pump market share is growing significantly. At the same time, we’re making solid inroads into new export, defense and homeland security markets. This is all thanks to our dedicated team effort and our loyal customers. We call our top Darley dealer customers “Darley Disciples” and our top end-user customers “Darley Demanders.” These are the folks who go out and spread the good word on Darley and demand us in their specifications. We truly value our relationships with each other and stay together in good times and bad, much like the Cubs and their fans. Like the Cubs, Darley has often played the role of underdog in many of the markets we serve. As we continue to grow our business and become a larger player, we are going to keep that underdog spirit alive. Darley will always be easy to work with, and we’ll compete harder than anyone else for your business. Whether the Cubbies win the World Series or not, I’ll continue to root for them. We hope you’ll continue to root for Darley as we compete for your business in the “big leagues.” Here’s to the spirit of the underdog – it will always remain with us!

DARLEY FD CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT

Darley Welcomes New Pump Customers Darley is welcoming new customers on a nearly daily basis. We like to refer to these customers as Darley Demanders, with one of our newest being Charlotte, NC, Fire Department. Charlotte has been using Darley for approximately three years now with great results. Darley is extremely proud to have one of the largest and most respected fire departments in the Charlotte FD (NC) has standardized on Darley pumps U.S. standardize on Darley pumps. such as this new pumper delivered by Smeal. The feeling of pride is mutual. Capt. Buddy Caldwell, who is responsible for heading up the fleet, recently commented to Jason Darley, “The service we have received from your company has been second to none. When we fired up the pumps for the first few times in the truck, they were so quiet that our operators didn’t think the pumps had engaged, then we went on to running them, the performance of these pumps compared to previous manufacturers hit the same points at a significantly lower RPM! You said that your pumps were the most efficient, but the performance efficiencies were quite a surprise.” Charlotte is utilizing the Darley EM 2000 2-stage pump shown below. The specification in Charlotte is a typical 2000 GPM NFPA rating, with a requirement of the pump to produce 600 GPM @ 600 PSI (2271 L/M @ 41 bar) from the second stage to protect the tallest buildings in the city in the event of a failure of the lift stations in these high-rise buildings. The EM pumps at Charlotte are capable of significantly exceeding this performance requirement.

The EM pump, NFPA rated to 2000 GPM, can be found in major North American cities such as Charlotte, Toronto, Philadelphia, Tacoma and Cleveland. Globally, the EM pump provides protection for some of the world’s largest cities including Beijing, China, Melbourne, Australia and Cairo, Egypt. If you want to move big water and have a second stage capable of significant high pressure performance at the top of the Darley EM 2000 is a tallest buildings in the world, this is the pump you need. The two stage pump designed The EM’s high flow and high pressure capabilities make it for “Big City” operations. a true “Big City” Pump. While updates have been made over the past 20 years in production, the base EM 2000 pump has been tested and proven. It was first introduced prior to the pump naming methodology of Darley pumps where the first letter is the pump volute series (L, K, P), the second is the impeller and suction type - Single (S) or Dual (D) suction impeller, and the third is the drive method - (M) Midship, (P) PTO, etc. In actuality, this pump would be called the EDM. Along with our HM pump, we’ve decided not to change the name. The EM is also available as a Single Stage 2000 GPM pump where higher pressures and better efficiencies at lower RPMs are not as vital. Whatever your need, Darley pumps can provide a solution. From our selection of floating pumps to fire boat pumps pushing over 3000 GPM, there is no fire pump manufacturer who can provide more innovation or has more offerings than Darley. DARLEY UNIQUE PRODUCT APPLICATIONS FDNY Fire Boat Fleet Standardizes on Darley Pumps The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is the largest and busiest fire department in the United States and the second largest in the world, after the Tokyo Fire Department, with approximately 10,200 uniformed firefighters and over 3,940 non-uniformed personnel. The FDNY Marine Operations is charged with protecting 560 miles of waterfront surrounding the City of New York and its citizens. The FDNY marine companies operate the department’s fire boats and are tasked with SCUBA/Dive Rescue and off-land firefighting in New York’s rivers and harbors. The FDNY’s three marine companies deploy large fire boats and smaller, secondary rescue boats to respond to various marine-related emergencies. With the closing of various Coast Guard stations, the Marine Operation’s responsibilities have grown and so has their fleet. Fire protection is provided by a fleet of 20 fire boats – each with a Darley pump. One of the most recent additions to the fleet is the “William M. Feehan” fire boat built by MetalCraft Marine (MCM). William Feehan was an FDNY firefighter who lost his life on 9/11, along with 343 other firefighters. His name plate in the MetalCraft Marine recently delivered this new fire boat to FDNY. DARLEY TIMES JUST ASK ENGINEERING

Question? What metals do you recommend on pump components that come in contact with water, and why? Wayne Hable Chief Engineer waynehable@darley.com

Asked by: Martin Simpson, Managing Director Fraser Fire, New Zealand

Answer.

The answer depends on the type of water being pumped: salt or fresh. With salt water or brackish water, Darley recommends an “all-bronze” pump. It consists of a sand cast C87500 silicon bronze pump casing, suction head, inboard head, discharge plumbing and impeller. The impeller shaft is either a wrought 316 austenitic stainless steel, or a wrought 17-4 participation hardened stainless steel. These materials are best because bronze is the most corrosionresistant material commercially available. There are more corrosion resistant metals - gold or platinum - but a pump made from those materials would be so expensive no one could afford to buy it! Using those particular wrought stainless impeller shafts comes from the need for more strength than what bronze material can provide. It’s easier to machine bronze than stainless steel, thus wherever possible, bronze is used. Machining an all-stainless steel pump would also make it too expensive for many to purchase. Additionally, an all-stainless pump that costs the same as an all-bronze pump cannot be machined to the precision of the allbronze pump. To prove these materials in a salt water pumping application, one need look no further than the deck of any modern Navy ship. Most equipment on deck is made of bronze material – it has that nice copper look. If it’s not bronze, it’ll be so thickly painted you

won’t know what it is. That thick paint protects the base metal from contact with salt water. If you were a salvage diver, you’d know that almost all Navy ship’s screw shafts are made from these same wrought stainless steel materials. With respect to fresh water pumps, Darley recommends a “cast iron” pump. It consists of a sand cast ASTM A48 class cast iron pump casing, suction head, inboard and discharge head. We use a sand cast The Darley ZSF C87500 silicon bronze impeller and all-bronze marine pump discharge ball valve body and a is capable of 3000 gpm flows and comes with a 2000 ft-lb clutch wrought 416 martensitic stainless attached to the pump transmission. steel for the impeller shaft. The reason for using cast iron is because it is the best material when factoring in corrosion resistance, material strength and material cost. Cast iron corrodes. You see that familiar red rust and that rust does not easily wash away with time. Rust building up over time works the same way as that thick paint on a Navy ship. The thicker the rust, the slower the base material will corrode away. Aluminum does not rust like this. Aluminum rusts quicker than cast iron - it’s a proven fact. Aluminum rust, also known as oxidation, easily rubs off the base material. In this manner, water simply washes away the aluminum oxidation exposing the base aluminum material to renew its oxidation again. Quite simply, aluminum pumps disappear over time while cast iron pumps get rusty. The impeller is the heart of the pump; thus we keep its material the same as a salt water pump. 416 stainless has slightly less corrosion resistance as compared to 316, but 416 is easier to machine, thus the reason it’s used for freshwater. Darley has used “all-bronze” and “cast iron” pumps in these applications for over 100 years with outstanding success.

DARLEY TIMES

From the Office of

JEFF DARLEY

Times Are Changing In 1978, when I arrived at the Darley Pump manufacturing plant in Chippewa Falls, WI, we had manual machines and some very skilled hands-on machine operators. Our engineering department used drafting tables, mylar sheets, and pencils and ink to create drawings. We had telephones everywhere, and each desk had a manual typewriter. We had tons of filling cabinets and mountains of paper records. We had no climate control in either the office or shops. Our plant was 25,000 sq. ft. Casting dust and the smell of coolant filled the air. We lacked industry certification credentials. We didn’t have an ERP system, and every order was hand written. Today, when I walk through Darley’s 101,750 sq. ft. pump manufacturing plant, I see CNC (Computerized Numerically Controlled) machines, CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines) and very few manually-operated machines. Each operator has a two-year associate’s degree in machine tooling. In the engineering department, computers are loaded with CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) software and 3D modeling. Computers are at every work station. We send electronic messages and rarely use the phone for internal business. Electronic records are stored in our Oracle-based J.D. Edwards operating system. An ERP planning system configures each order. Our office and shops are climate controlled. We are Lean, ISO 9001:2008 certified, and have products which adhere to NFPA, CCC, EN and other standards from throughout the world. Darley pumps are used in all branches of the U.S. Department of Defense and many foreign military services, as well in fire and emergency services in more than 100 countries. Most people believe these changes are good. A few wish they could turn back the clock and do things like they used to. What if fire engines and fire pumps were the same today as 30 or 40 years ago? Would this be acceptable to the fire and emergency services? The answer is absolutely not. In the last few decades, we have experienced amazing changes, not only in how and whom Darley manufactures pumps for, but how the fire and emergency services have embraced new technology. We continue to invest in advancing technology, innovation and education and hire the best talent to serve you. After 108 years, we are still family owned and operated. We would like nothing more than to earn your business as we transition to our 4th Darley generation. We promise if you continue to use (or change to using) Darley pumps, we will continue to meet or exceed your expectations!

Darley Employees Participate in Local Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup How do you make picking up trash fun? Step one, ask for volunteers. Step two, break into two teams. Step three, issue a challenge to see which team can pick up the most trash. A group of 15 Darley employees from Chippewa Falls, WI, did just that this past May. They took part in the annual Adopt-A-Highway cleanup program to help beautify the community. After lunch, Darley volunteers drove Darley employees gave back to the community to Hwy. 178 east of the company’s by spending an afternoon cleaning up one mile production facility. Donning fluorescent green vests, the two teams spread out with trash bags and pokers to remove man-made and natural litter that had accumulated in the ditch over the winter months. Participants included managers, machine shop and assembly employees, office workers and truck assemblers. “With such a great turnout of volunteers, it made for quick work,” said HR Manager Kris Schoen, who also organized the event. “Everyone did a great job. Many vehicles passing us beeped and waved at us, thanking us for the efforts, so I know that the community really appreciates clean roadsides.” Volunteers included Andy Nicolai, Jeff Cronin, Duane Pilgrim, Shelly Falkner, Andy Henneman.
