Darley Awarded Major Defense Contracts When most people think of Darley, they think of us as a pump manufacturer and equipment distributor for firefighters around the world. While Darley is proud to have served our world’s firefighters for over 111 years, we have also been honored to serve the United States and allied warfighters since the pre-World War II (WWII) days. During WWII, Darley provided the US military with hundreds of fire CAPABILITIES trucks and thousands of pumps. After the war, these trucks stayed C4ISR on-ground in countries around the world which helped to launch our OCIE & PPE thriving international business, as customers recognized the benefits SPECIAL OPERATIONS SUPPORT of such advanced, high-quality equipment. WEAPON ACCESSORIES & OPTICS What many of our long-time customers don’t realize is, today, the EXPEDITIONARY largest segment of Darley’s business comes from serving warfighters TRAINING SUPPORT and equipping them with a range of products outside of the firefighting FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES EQUIPMENT product markets. Based upon the numbers stemming from newly MILITARY FIRE APPARATUS SERVICE PROGRAM awarded contracts, Darley Defense orders in 2019 have nearly CLASS I & CLASS VIII doubled from the previous year – growth being fueled largely by defense equipment sales and services. Darley Launches New Fire Advisory Board

In 2008, Darley launched our first ever Defense Advisory Board to assist us in growing our newlyformed Defense Division. Over the years, we have learned extensively from this amazing group of veterans including admirals, generals, command sergeant majors, captains, etc., from all branches of the military who have helped to guide us over the years. While we have served the world’s fire services over 100 years, we thought it prudent to form a Fire Advisory Fire Advisory Board in Chicago September 12-13, 2019. Board (FAB) to help ensure we are best serving the needs of our core firefighter customer base. In forming the FAB, we wanted diversity in the board members. Darley’s leadership put together a preference list that included innovative early adopters with a cross-section of traditional but progressive and seasoned fire service leaders. Remarkably, everyone who was approached agreed to serve! Our team consists of Chief Otto Drozd III (Former Orange County FD, FL), Caleb Holt (Former Texas A & M alum), Captain Kirk McKinzie (Cosumnes FD, CA), Chief Bobby Halton (Editor Fire Engineering magazine), Commissioner James Joyce (Retired Chicago FD), Chief Tim Sashko (Former Executive Director Illinois Fire Chiefs and Chief of Mundelein FD, IL), and Chief Brian Brown (Former South Metro FD, CO). Our first meeting was held in Chicago on September 12-13, 2019. The meeting included a fire service needs assessment, review of new fire and rescue technologies, along with the formalization of Darley’s next five-year strategic plan. All board members chose to have their stipend paid to a charity of their choosing. We are humbled by their willingness to help Darley and those we serve.

Disruptive Technologies... Catching the Wave Have you ever noticed the ripple effect that takes place when revolutionary technologies are introduced? One transformation seems to be the catalyst for numerous other changes. At Darley, we are constantly canvasing our markets in search of innovative products that address these ever evolving needs. For example, electric vehicles are growing in popularity, but this megatrend has resulted in battery fires that are almost impossible to control, until now. Our industrial and military fire customers are facing a crisis with the discovery of cancerous C8 chemicals in the firefighting foams they’ve been using for almost a century. Our FLAIM Trainer virtual reality firefighting systems allow users to train more safely. The heightened awareness of cancer among firefighters has created an abundance of new products for clean cabs, such as our DARCON decontamination system. Most people talk about disruptive technologies as if they are something new, but our founder William S. Darley was a “disrupter” in the 1920’s when he was the first to introduce a fire engine on a Ford Model T chassis and offer it for sale through our catalog. It sold for $690 – roughly one tenth of the price of a typical custom fire truck at the time. The first production model is on display in our headquarters. Not all disruptive new products are completely revolutionary, however. Our Safe Water Boxes are a simple concept, yet it’s revolutionary in terms of helping our service members to aid those in crisis after a natural disaster. Our solution offers a water box with a 3-year shelf life, no wasteful bottles and it can be safely dropped to military forward operating bases. We answer the call as often as we can. We will continue to seek out and “catch the wave” on these advancements that benefit our customers. As a part of Darley, if you see opportunities that will help you do your job more safely and efficiently, please let us know. Paul C. NEW “WE SWITCHED” AD CAMPAIGN

Milwaukee Switches to Darley Pumps The Milwaukee Fire Department has become the latest metro fire department to make the switch to Darley pumps for their fleet. Milwaukee recently signed a multi-unit We switched to contract with Reliant Fire Apparatus, representing Pierce Manufacturing, and specified the Darley LDMX 1500 pump making for a strong Wisconsin trifecta. Both the FD’s decision to make the switch and the particular pump they chose, were based on several factors including: the significant excess flow capacity provided with the LDM pump, the strength and lower decibel levels of the Darley transPROUDLY MADE IN THE USA mission, and the impression their purchasing committee was left with after investing the time to tour Darley’s facilities. During the tour, they witnessed a truly American made, union built product and Darley’s Milwaukee has joined the ever-growing state of the art manufacturing facility, with a list of major metro FD’s to switch to dedicated and unparalleled focus among our Darley Pumps. team on quality manufacturing and customer service. The icing on the cake was Darley’s industry leading warranty, a six year manufacturer’s warranty which includes three years of parts and labor. At Darley, we couldn’t be prouder to have the largest fire department in the state we manufacture in be coming on board. LDM/LDMX Single Stage Midship Pump 20% Smaller and Lighterweight, With Flows Over 2000 GPM at 150 PSI

The LDM pump is Darley’s tried and true single stage midship pump. It is about 20% smaller and lighter weight, on average, than our competitors’ pumps provided at the same rating points. The LDM pump, although rated to 1750 GPM, flows well over 2000 GPM at 150 PSI in max flow testing. This reserve capacity eliminates the common practice of a department paying more for a higher rated pump, for example - 2000 GPM, and then “de-rating” the pump to 1750 or 1500 GPM, to ensure they pass annual NFPA service tests throughout the life of the apparatus. We strive to achieve those results for you with the reserve capacity standards we hold ourselves to. The LDM features our MagnaTrans™ transmission which is MagnaTrans™ is the highest rated (19,230 ft/lbs of torque) in the industry. The The the highest rated transMagnaTrans™ is standard on the majority of our midship pumps mission in the industry with 2000 GPM ratings or less. As many customers who’ve been rated at 19,230 ft/lbs making the switch to Darley continue to note, this transmission of torque. is much quieter than any other midship pump transmission they have used. The LDMX designation (pictured) is given to the pump when the OEM supplies a stainless manifold rather than cast iron - an industry trend allowing flexibility in plumbing design and additional weight savings. For more information on the LDM or LDMX pump or to determine which Darley pump may be best for your fire department, reach out to JasonDarley@Darley.com or at 715-456-9390.

JUST ASK ENGINEERING Question?

What is the latest with C8 Class B foams? Is there a safer alternative? Asked by: Ted Soldan - Chief Otter Lake Vol. Fire and First Responders, MI

Paulie Schaus Pump Engineer

Answer.

Recent awareness of PFAS (per- & polyfluoroalkyl substances) environmental contamination is changing the Class B foam industry and the fire industry should be aware of this issue. PFAS is a broad term that includes all molecules that have a fluorine-carbon bond. They are often used as surfactants in Class B foam concentrates. Surfactants – with their hydrophilic (waterloving) head and a hydrophobic (water-hating) tail - are essential to the stability of foam. When bubbles are formed, the tails, repelled by the water, act as a buffer for the thin water membrane that is stabilized by the hydrophilic head. Without these molecular interactions water bubbles would burst as quickly as bubbles blown under water. Foams for Class A (structure) fires, having always used carbon-loving surfactants without fluorine to soak into carbon fuel sources, are safe and biodegradable. The problem is Class B (flammable liquid) foams with carbon-hating fluorosurfactants (type of PFAS molecules) that allow foam to sit atop the liquid fuel and create an aqueous film that acts as a vapor barrier, cools the fuel, and helps spread the foam across the fuel to promote self-healing. The fluorine-carbon bonds in fluorosurfactants, while necessary for repelling hydrocarbon fuels, are extremely strong and take hundreds of years to degrade without incineration. While not all PFAS chemicals are the same, two major components in older formulations of AFFF concentrates, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been found to be toxic and accumulate in living tissue for years. These PFOS and PFOA molecules are finding their way into groundwater and being consumed by the public. Once these molecules are

paulieschaus@darley.com

inside your body, they cause higher risks for high cholesterol, thyroid dysfunctions, birth defects, high blood pressure while pregnant, and When a Class B foam extinguishes a flammable even prostate, kidney, liquid fire, the aqueous film blocks vapor and helps the foam spread over the fuel surface. and testicular cancers. Since 2002, when 3M found these effects in their fluorine-based foam, it has been a slow process to remove these fluorine molecules from AFFF, resulting in over $670 million in lawsuits against foam manufacturers and regulations restricting AFFF within the coming years. Many foam manufacturers are now formulating fluorine-free foams (FFF) to provide an alternative solution. While FFFs are effective for fuel fires at thin depths, they are less effective when the fuel source has larger depths due to its lower resistance to hydrocarbon fuels compared to AFFF. Foams using shorter chain PFAS molecules have also been developed and are almost as effective as older formulations of AFFF. Older AFFF formulations used PFOS and PFOA molecules that consisted of 8 carbon chains (C8). Fluorosurfactants used in newer AFFF formulations use 6 carbon chain (C6) molecules that cannot break down into C8 molecules. While C6 fluorosurfactants are still toxic and persistent in the environment, it is believed they don’t accumulate in tissue like C8 molecules, resulting in a lower degree of long-term adverse effects than the C8 molecules cause. Until more effective FFFs emerge, certain agencies have recommended that fire departments use current FFF when possible, but resort to C6 foams when they have no other choice and always follow the foam manufacturers’ recommendations. As the foam industry changes, we at Darley are committed to keeping everyone aware of the changes occurring as we understand them, letting you know of developing technologies, and providing equipment designed for the safest possible outcome.

Simple to Operate Darley Foam Refill System ODIN Foam recently designed a simple to operate and easy to install Foam Refill System. With simplicity, price, and safety in mind, you can now refill your foam cell without having to climb on your truck to manually fill the tank. The system is designed to lift foam up to 10 feet and deliver 4-6 GPM of foam, allowing for quick refill of your truck’s foam cell. Darley Embraces Robotics and Automation With the pressure of faster production and without sacrificing quality as well as engaging a new, more tech savvy workforce, the Pump Division is embracing automation and robotics. These advanced technologies engage the workforce where skills are focused on the technology of the system in order to reduce menial, repetitive, dangerous, or highly sensitive tasks. In addition to employing a workforce that has engaged with technology their whole lives, this generation has had more technical resources and educational opportunities to apply to the world around them. Manufacturers need to adapt to an environment where technology is key to allowing the current generation to overcome the labor shortage. We are taking our time to implement new technology in a way that allows the entire workforce to embrace it. One area that where we are implementing robotics is in machine Darley’s Newest Addition: Halter tending. While a machinist is using his/ her skillset on higher S230 with Fanuc, Machine value activities, a robot can be performing the machine load Tending an Okuma LT3000. and unload operations. A robot provides multiple benefits in this area. Repeatability over time is an advantage that a robot has over a human operator because there is no body fatigue factor. This also means that the high quality standards that we hold are easier to meet during long or higher quantity part runs. Machine tending robots also provide a higher level of safety with reduced repetitive motion tasks for the machinist. While the robot is loading and unloading the machine, the machinist can be working on more technically skilled tasks such as setting up items for the next job to be run or performing inspection operations.

Hi! My name is Marilyn Janecek and I’m a 4th generation great grand daughter of W.S. Darley. I’m also the daughter of Patricia and Harold Janecek and grand daughter of Patricia Darley Long. I’m currently a sophomore in high school. I also am a part of my high school cheer team. I really enjoy spending time with my friends and going to concerts with them. This summer I was a swim coach and taught swim lessons to children which was an exciting experience. I am not sure which career I would like to pursue but I do plan on attending college in the future. I am very proud to be a part of the Darley family and proud to know we are serving communities worldwide. There are currently 31 fourth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.
