Darley Named Ex-Im Exporter of the Year W.S. Darley & Co. received the Ex-Im Bank Sub-Saharan Africa Exporter of the Year award at this year’s Ex-Im Annual Conference. Peter Darley commented, “We are all proud of our employees and partners that worked so hard on this project. Based on the volume of business that Ex-Im supports, it is a real honor that Darley was selected for this prestigious award.” The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) authorized a $15.7 million loan to the state government of Lagos, Nigeria, to underwrite the purchase of 34 emergency vehicles and equipment. Darley Makes the Inc. 5000 List for the 6th Year in a Row

For the 6th time in a row, W.S. Darley & Co. has made the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. The announcement was made in a major public release of the list on August 12, 2015. Darley’s sales have grown significantly over the years, more than tripling over the last 10 years alone. According to Paul Darley, “During this time, our average compounded growth rate is in excess of 15% during a time when our core business markets have been down as much as 40%. We owe it to great teamwork and an incredible customer base.” According to Eric Schurenberg, President and Editor-in-Chief of Inc. Magazine, “Six years in a row is amazing. Only a tiny fraction of the nation’s companies have demonstrated such remarkably consistent high growth, particularly in the difficult economic environment of the past few years. This achievement truly puts you in rarefied company. Sincere congratulations to you and your team.” Darley will be recognized, along with the other Inc. 5000 honorees, during a three-day conference at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando on October 21-23, 2015.

Firing On All Cylinders Patrick Lencioni, in his new best-selling book, The Advantage, writes, “The seminal difference between successful organizations and mediocre or unsuccessful ones has little, if anything, to do with what they know or how smart they are; it has everything to do with how healthy they are.” Our company theme this year, “Firing on all Cylinders,” is fitting. In our recent annual employee survey, we received the highest ratings in our company history. We asked our employees, among other things, if they felt our company was headed in the right direction. Over 95% of our employees responded that they agree or strongly agree. These results are supported by our high employee retention rate (98%) and our ability to attract great new talent – two critical benchmarks for any organization. I wholeheartedly agree with Patrick Lencioni, but also feel that an organization must have purpose. When we asked our employees, “Do you feel our vision and mission statement of service to war fighters and firefighters gives you a deep sense of purpose and inspires you to work with enthusiasm and commitment?” Almost every employee in our company responded with a resounding “Yes”! Part of the reason for these strong results is that we keep our employees informed and involved in the decision making process. We are constantly imbuing our culture into our team, not only in our company-wide quarterly meetings and message boards, but also in our daily actions. We encourage them to respectfully challenge management and each other. Our Team Darley members are the backbone of our success. You can see it in the faces of Mike and Bob Hayes who have collectively been a part of Team Darley for over 80 years. (See their employee profile on page 6.) It’s been said, “An opportunity sustains an enterprise for a year; good management sustains an enterprise for a decade; good corporate culture sustains an enterprise for a century.” Bill Darley often said, “If we take care of our employees and customers, the profits will come.” He instilled this passion in so many of us and made sure we understood the importance of putting others first, in all that we do. We thank you for the opportunity to serve you. If you ever feel we’re not firing on all cylinders, I hope you’ll let me know.

Darley Answers the Call for Firefighter in Need In early May of this year, Mrs. Deb Lexow was in a pickle. Her daughter, Felicity, was in urgent need of turnout gear to pass the Wisconsin State Firefighter exam. Due to Felicity’s small stature, her gear had to be custom made. Deb reached out to Paul Darley to ask for help. Darley answered the call and we were able to expedite her order in time for her test on May 17th. Deb wrote, “We just wanted to thank you again for your aid in getting Felicity’s new turnouts to her in time for the State II testing. She passed with flying colors (thanks, in part, to the new gear from Darley)!” Mrs. Lexow is not only the proud mother a new firefighter/EMT, she is Darley stepped up to the plate also the wife of a firefighter and the mother of a captain. In 1930, Darley gave fireworks a shot with 11 catalog pages devoted to Roman Candles, Skyrockets, Whirling Dervishes, Peacock Plumbs and Bouquet Bombshells. This edition noted that Public Exhibition Displays were “made up for safe and effective firing by inexperienced persons. Expert firing operators are not required.” Just in case of an accident, the following pages featured fire hose, extinguishers and smoke masks. Back in the day, firefighters needed to wear driving goggles, not to combat heat and smoke, but to protect their eyes while driving to the scene since many early trucks lacked windshields. ODIN® FOAM - Korea Orders 17 Mongoose CAFS Modules Darley recently delivered seventeen Mongoose CAFS units to the Hanseo company in Korea. These are some of the first units to utilize compressed air foam in Korea. The project started a few years ago when Darley traveled to Korea and presented CAFS, foam, and the increased firefighting efficiency when not only using foam, but also compressed air foam. The units have received a lot of attention in Korea because of their ability to extinguish fires efficiently and effectively. The CAFS units are currently being used by the Chungnam Fire Department, in the Chungnam Province, to fight forest and municipal fires. The Mongoose CAFS units were certified by KFI, which is the governing body for firefighting products sold in Korea. They adhere to very strict standards and demand accuracy down to a few percent from the pump, compressor and foam pump that together, Hanseo and Darley, were able to meet. These standards are the most specific in the world and the engineering teams at ODIN® and Hanseo did a phenomenal job delivering. Hanseo is leading the way in Korea with compressed air foam technology. They have done a great job marketing the product and educating firefighters on usage. Hanseo has taken the market by storm performing demos with ODIN® CAF units and educating on its effectiveness fighting fires using the foam/water/air solution. JUST ASK ENGINEERING

Question?

What has Darley done to ease rural department budgetary concerns?

MADE IN

USA

Asked by: Jeff Bowen, Midwest Fire Amanda Normand Design Engineer

Answer.

In recent years, the U.S. economy has experienced drastic swings. That has caused a chain reaction in all areas of the economy. As a result, municipal budgets have been hard hit. With already tight budgets, rural fire departments have had to carefully examine their needs, while determining the most economical route to provide a high quality of service to their communities. Darley has continued to respond to the needs of its customers by developing pumps that provide the performance and quality expected of Darley products while remaining budget conscious. Powered by dependable Briggs and Stratton engines made here in the U.S., the Darley Porpoise™ is a more compact version of the trusted Darley Dolphin™ floating pump. The Darley Porpoise™ fits inside a typical truck compartment and is easily transported. Weighing in at under 60 lbs., the Darley Porpoise™ is capable of flowing over 300 gallons per minute, while consuming just 1.6 quarts of fuel per hour. The compact design of the Porpoise turns any pond or home swimming 2BE18VX pool into a usable water source Base Model

for fire suppression. In addition to the Porpoise, Darley has introduced the 2BE18VX. Similar to the popular 2BE18V, the 2BE18VX uses the same 18 hp Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine, the same 2BE water pump, and the same maintenance-free silicon carbide mechanical seal – all standard. With flow capabilities of 375 gallons per minute and pressures exceeding 140 psi, the 2BE18VX is an excellent choice for water transfer, multiple hand lines and wildland fire suppression. The 2BE18VX gives you essentials in an economical package without sacrificing Darley performance and quality standards. Darley will continue to respond to the changing marketplace, while providing high quality, safe and innovative products with unmatched commitment and service.

Spencer Delivers Wireless Remote SmartStart™ Brian and Peggy Spencer opened their doors in 1982 and have built both firetrucks and happy customers from South Branch, MI to Pittsburgh, PA. Along the way, the Spencers also raised 5 boys who were shown the enjoyment and pride of hard work and a job well done. Spencer, located in South Haven, MI, is now led by the second-generation of the Spencer family members, who are following those same hard working principles, and incorporating some new ideas and new technology along the way. At this year’s FDIC, Spencer partnered with Darley showing this vehicle, which Spencer built for Cherry Grove, MI, featuring a Darley 2BE18V pump and a Darley SmartStart™ wireless pump controller. Grant Spencer enjoyed working with both Darley and the department on this product stating, “The SmartStart™ wireless controller allowed the department to really showcase their community’s budget being put to use, and nearly right after we delivered it.” Spencer said the department called him shortly after delivery telling him they had just responded to a burn that had gotten Cherry Grove Fire Department (MI) has found the Darley out of control and spread to a ditch, SmartStart™ to be easy-to-operate the pump from inside the cab. the department was able to quickly put the entire fire out without leaving the cab, and several onlookers who were on the scene began clapping and cheering. Now that is something you don’t see every day. We are confident there will be more happy customers as Spencer continues to grow its customer base in the Midwest and East Coast. Many OEMs are finding that the Darley SmartStart™ is an economical solution to in-cab pump operation – considerably more affordable than mounting and wiring a dual control panel inside the cab. JAMES LONG B-B or B-C...Does It Really Matter? Marketers have historically made a point of distinguishing between two types of customers, the B-B (Business-to-Business) segment and the B-C (Business-to-Consumer). When Darley receives an order from a local fire department, we call this a B-B sale. A flashlight sold to the Chief’s wife as a Christmas gift would be B-C. It wasn’t all that long ago that our customers were almost exclusively fire departments and municipal purchasing agents. Sales to business customers had their own set of standards. All orders were placed by PO and payment due within 30 days. Business customers were generally very patient and accepting of backorders. Returns were few and far between. The internet gave all of us instant access to an endless variety of merchandise. Individuals generally placed smaller orders, but the volume quickly added up if you were marketing to the masses. As consumers, we expect everything to be in stock and delivered to our homes within 24-48 hours. Not only do we want it “yesterday”, it has to be “on sale” and there was always the chance we’d return it for no special reason. This level of customer service is now being asked for by business customers. Understandably, excellent service and pricing should be available to every customer. At Darley, we are listening to your feedback and have shortened lead-times on most items. We are investing in new technology that will give users more access to information about your account, order status, inventory and lead-times. Customers are taking advantage of the sales that run daily on eDarley.com. Regardless of your customer type, you can be guaranteed the widest selection of firefighting equipment, a commitment to match any advertised price, hundreds of items in stock and the promise of customer satisfaction from a family business that has been dedicated to working with the fire service for four generations. He started at Darley in 1969 when he was 19. Hired to do maintenance, Mike would later wire trucks and paint pumps. In the early 1970s, Mike was asked to operate one of Darley’s first CNC machines. That led to a night shift job, and later to a foreman’s position. He served in those roles until 1998, when he joined Customer Service. His older brother, Bob, started with Darley in March 1979 as a drill press operator. Soon after, he was operating a CNC, mounting pumps, and wiring truck chassis. He loved delivering fire trucks to Darley’s Melrose Park, IL, facility. “Bill Darley always made time for me, and asked how I was doing,” recalls Bob. Thirteen years ago, Bob took a pump assembler position, where he has worked since. Both say they’ve stayed at Darley because of the way they’re treated - by customers, the Darley family, and colleagues. The best part of his job, says Mike, is “working with customers when they call in with a problem. I know our products really well.” Bob says it was easy to stay because of the Darleys. “They are a great bunch of people.” Jeff Darley once advised him to act as if the pumps he was working on were his own. “You are putting out a product that you want to be proud of. I try to make it the very best.” Mike agrees. “Paul always says to err on the side of the customer, and we do.” As their careers wind down, both look forward to retirement.
