Darley Innovations Bring New Technology to First Responders Darley continues to grow and expand into new NEW emerging markets – in fact, in 2018 our company sales grew 59%. Keep The Fire! Herb Kelleher, the founder of Southwest Airlines, recently passed away. He was a business icon who transformed the travel industry with his unique “Southwest Effect.” His business premise was simple: if you deliver a high-quality product and treat people well, customers will come back and employees will give the company their all. Southwest customers and employees became incredibly loyal and spread the good word to their friends. Employees are empowered to take care of their customers, and have a little fun doing it. Marketing experts today rely on a variety of ways to measure customer engagement and satisfaction. The simplest and most effective means is asking a simple question to customers, “On a scale of 1 – 10, how likely are you to recommend us to a friend?” In marketing speak, this question measures what’s called the Net Promoter Score or NPS. Customers who answer a 9 or 10, get 90 or 100 NPS points. Those who respond with a score of 8 get no points, and those with a score of 7 or less are distractors and have points taken away – a score of 0 would equal -100. Given the NPS range of -100 to +100, a positive score or one above 0, is considered good. A score of 50 or higher is excellent and a score of 70 or higher is considered “world class.” The NPS score of Southwest Airlines was a 65, the highest in the airline industry, by far. Darley regularly surveys our customers including a semi-annual survey of our OEM customers and distributors. I’m proud to say that our most recent NPS score was 71 – world class! Our Fireboy Division scored an 86! We thank our customers for this vote of confidence expressing their loyalty. This did not just happen. It was the result of Team Darley’s continued focus on serving our customers far beyond what they expect. For the past 20 years, the back of my business card has had a simple message that reads: “If you should know of anyone who is not 100% satisfied with our products or services, I will consider it a favor to be notified.” We’ve even run ads that feature my home and cell phone numbers. We are extremely grateful for these positive scores, but we are going to remain humble and diligent in our continued pursuit of excellence. Above all, we are going to Keep the Fire! If you would give us a score of 8 or lower, I’d consider it a favor if you’ll let me know.

NEW “WE SWITCHED” AD CAMPAIGN
Edmonton Becomes the Newest Major Metro FD to Switch to Darley Pumps The city of Edmonton, in Northern Alberta, has continued to grow in the last decade. With this growth, the city has seen the sky literally being the limit. In 2015, the City of Edmonton We switched to had been requested to permit skyscrapers taller than what had ever been constructed in the city, with some buildings exceeding 70 stories - new heights for Edmonton. When these requests landed on the desks of the FD members responsible for providing direction and ultimately fire protection, the city began to look within their response plans and apparatus’ capabilities to focus on whether they had the right equipment to meet these DARLEY EXCLUSIVE HEATER CORE evolving needs. The FD engaged many similarly-sized metros and exchanged ideas on their plans, ultimately determining a 2-stage pump would need to be specified on these apparatus to provide The City of Edmonton, AB has joined the adequate firefighting flows and pressures from ever-growing list of Major Metro FD’s to switch to Darley Pumps. the ground. Edmonton Logistics Chief, Walter Gahler, commented to Jason Darley, “In addition to the top-notch service we received through the evaluation process, we decided that Darley pumps had significant advantages in the overall design of the product and a notable advantage in the warranty coverage. The awesome feature of the Heater Core provided additional protection to the pump in our climate. It was a big move, but we decided to pull the trigger and make the switch and we couldn’t be more excited for the vehicle of the future for Edmonton.” To learn more reasons why your department should switch to Darley Pumps, visit www.Darley.com/We-Switched.

In 2018, more fire departments switched to Darley pumps than ever before. The heater core was one of many Darley exclusive features that helped drive the decision for Edmonton to make the switch to Darley in a multi-year contract.
The heater core can make the difference between a pump freezing on scene and reliable performance, especially in northern climates. The heater core also allows you to cool the engine in the warmest of summer months when this standard Darley pump feature is connected to the vehicle’s engine by your OEM of choice. You have enough to worry about. Your pump’s performance shouldn’t be one of them.

TIER 4 DIESEL DRIVEN PUMP
Question? As a builder, what do we need to know DOC is the simplest for about the new tier 4 diesel offerings in terms the end user as well as the of operation and mounting? builders. Like all of the after Tim Dewitz, CMfgT Senior Engineer Years at Darley: 26
Asked by: Heather Devries, Skeeter Brush Trucks
Answer.
Depending on the brand of engine, the new tier 4 engine can mean a number of new exhaust after treatment considerations when laying out and installing a diesel-powered pump. The different after treatment options have different costs, complexities and size constraints. The different exhaust after treatments are: • DOC – Diesel Oxidation Catalyst • SCR – Selective Catalytic Reduction – uses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) • EGR – Exhaust Gas Recirculation – some exhaust gas is recirculated back into the combustion chamber to lower the oxygen concentration, lower the temperature of the combustion chamber and exhaust temperature • DPF – Diesel Particulate Filter - the filter traps particulates Particulates need to be removed periodically through a regeneration cycle where the particulates are burned off at a very high temperature, leaving ash behind. During the regeneration cycle the engine performance and operation is limited and controlled, affecting the performance and operation of the equipment being powered by the engine. Some engines may even use a combination of diesel exhaust after treatment to be in compliance.

treatments, there are controls involved, but the DOC controls typically only monitor the use of the catalyst to properly signal if it needs replacing. The catalyst can be incorporated right in the muffler. No matter what exhaust gas after treatment is being used, the operating conditions and installation will greatly affect the ability of the engine to operate in compliance. Rendering of Tier 4, 2.5AGE 65K Engine suppliers need to review the pump with integral DOC exhaust application to ensure the proper gas treatment in muffler. conditions are being met. In many cases this can be done through the review of drawings, but in some extreme cases, on site testing may be required. Darley’s new lineup of diesel-powered portables utilizes DOC exhaust gas after treatment right in the muffler providing the most compact, least complex, and lowest maintenance for end users, requiring no DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) and no regeneration during operation. Technology/ Innovation/ Advanced Manufacturing As we enter the fourth industrial revolution, the role of technology, innovation and advanced manufacturing increases, and the human skill sets needed to work in manufacturing increase. These newer requirements are creating skill gaps in employees and at the same time new manufacturing jobs worldwide are becoming harder to place qualified employees. Many manufacturers are looking to recruit highly skilled workers for manufacturing, but they are hard to find and retain. So, to reverse a portion of this situation for the future, manufacturers must invest in and leverage new technology, innovation and training of their workforce. They must be willing to change, think outside the box, listen to their employees and do more with their current work force while embracing advanced manufacturing. Technology and innovation give us new opportunities to grow our business. They give us the ability to be competitive and potentially to improve the way we manufacture something more precisely, at a lower cost, and typically with a reduction in lead time. In the long run, advanced manufacturing has a positive return on investment. At Darley, we have the same goals and objectives as other world class manufacturing facilities. We must embrace new technology, innovation and advanced manufacturing and use methods to achieve high performing, high quality, safe and reliable products, competitively priced on schedule. We have a team at Darley that is serving you from a Lean certified ISO 9001:2015 manufacturing environment. This team is focused on meeting and/or exceeding your expectations. Our top goals and objectives to achieve this are to train our workforce, embrace new technology, while adopting Innovation using advanced manufacturing methods to better serve you!
