William J. Darley Leaves His Mark Former W. S. Darley & Co. President, CEO and Chairman Bill Darley passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on April 17, 2018. He was 89 years old. Bill worked for Darley since 1950 and became president in 1962. He retired in January 2010 as CEO after 60 years of service but stayed on as Chairman of the Board for another 5 years. He truly left his mark. Truly a world traveler having visited over 135 countries, Bill spent his life learning and mentoring those around him. He was well known for his wisdom and quotes. He served in a leadership capacity in numerous industry and charity organizations. Bill earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Purdue University, but he was a salesman at heart. He raised 8 children with his first wife Jeanne who died of cancer in 1981. He went on to marry Fran several years later after seeing her at St. Luke Church where he was a lector. Together they were proud grandparents to many. Bill was a family man, but his passion was the fire service. He loved serving others, especially our customers and those Bill and Fran Darley most in need. He was President of Fire Apparatus Manufacturer Association (FAMA) in 1990 and was named the Industry Star Achiever in 2000. He also served on the IAFC’s Foundation Board, the NFPA 1901 Committee, CFSI board and Dominican University’s Board of trustees, to name a few. Bill was a mentor, leader and inspiration for friends, family and co-workers alike and made Darley the amazing place to work that it is today. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He touched and helped so many. The Darley family was greatly touched by all those who attended his funeral services in River Forest, IL and at the FDIC in Indianapolis. Thank you! Bill will be inducted into the National Fire Heritage Center’s Hall of Legends, Legacies and Leaders on October 8, 2018 in Emmitsburg, MD. For more information visit www.billdarley.com.

General Ray Palumbo Joins Darley Board Darley is pleased to announce that Lt. General (Ret) Raymond P. Palumbo has joined the Darley Board of Directors. General Palumbo replaced Admiral (Ret) Joe Maguire who resigned on September 1, 2018 to head the National Counter-terrorism Center, coordinating the fight against terrorism while overseeing an organization of about 1,000 people. Gen. Palumbo recently retired from the US Army where he was the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Intelligence) for Warfighter Support, and simultaneously served as Director, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Task Force. He served on the Darley Defense Advisory Board for two years prior to his appointment on our corporate board. Board Chairman Paul Darley commented, “We are honored and humbled to have Ray Palumbo a man of Ray’s caliber join our Board. It’s been on honor to work with him over the past few years. He brings an incredible wealth of knowledge in the areas including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) which are critical to our warfighter customers.” General Palumbo replied, “Darley is a professionally run company and it is a privilege to serve Darley and our warfighters.” A native of Windber, Pennsylvania, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry upon graduating from West Point in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He later earned a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. Ray and his wife Alice reside in Virginia and have four grown children and five grandchildren.

DARLEY TIMES From the Office of

PAUL DARLEY

Are You Leaving Your Mark? My father Bill Darley loved to say, “A legacy isn’t something you leave behind. It is something that you build each day. Ultimately, you will be judged not on how successful the company is under your team’s watch, but on how successfully the next generation takes the reigns and works together on making the business a success.” Like many things that Bill said, that stuck with me and I know it did with my siblings and cousins, too. He truly left his mark in so many ways. As a fourth-generation family business, we know the survival statistics (less than 3% of companies make it to the fourth generation) and we realize the importance of our legacy and being good stewards. The older my generation gets, the more important this becomes. We often ask, “Are we making our mark?” I have so many fond memories of Bill. I distinctly remember a management meeting about 25 years ago, when we all filled out surveys that included this question: “What is the purpose of our business?” Every manager except one answered that our primary purpose was to make a profit. We looked around the room at each other, wondering who didn’t get it; that person ended up being my father. “We are about serving our customers, creating good jobs and giving back,” he said. “If we do that, the profits will come.” The room was silent. He was right. Today, we run our business largely on this guiding principal – we call it – The Darley Way. As I think of the firefighters and warfighters that we serve, each is making their mark through service to society. It’s an admirable profession and these men and women are truly making their mark each and every day. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve them. As you start to ponder your legacy, think to yourself: What is the best use of my talents? Of my life? Bill’s parting advice would be for you to find a way to leave your mark on this world to make it a better place. You’ll find contentment as you do. We empower our team members to work to create raving customers by having your back in all our dealings. If you ever feel we’re not delighting you, I hope you’ll let me know. Thanks for the opportunity to serve you.

3 YEAR Most fire fighters in today’s world recognize that the old concept of “the bigger the better” doesn’t apply to pumps mounted in fire trucks. Sure they want as much flow and pressure as possible but much of the focus in the last decade has been on better efficiency and keeping pump compartments as compact as possible while still making them accessible. Darley’s engineers recognized the value of this concept years ago when they designed the PSM (P = series 1000-1500, S = Single impeller, M = midship, split-shaft pump). The Darley PSM has grown to be a first choice for many FDs and OEMs seeking the flexibility of our compact & module design. Features on the pump include, but are not limited to: • Helical Cut Gears: Strong power transference, noise reduction and long life. • Vacuum cast impellers for maximum efficiency • Broached impellers, splined shafts and silicon carbide mechanical seals for maximum durability • MagnaTransTM transmission with a torque rating of 19,230 lb-ft: the strongest on the market • AutoCool™ Transmission Cooler: Cools gear case by convection with cooling plate with no chance of contamination • Transmission Dip Stick and Powder Coated Transmission Interiors: Conveniently check the oil level with the transmission dip stick • Powder coated transmission interiors to eliminate moisture Contact pumpsales@darley.com for further details. JUST ASK ENGINEERING Question?

Tim Dewitz, CMfgT Sr. Engineer Mfg. Team Lead TimDewitz@darley.com

Why is the drip rate between 5-60 drops on Darley pumps equipped with packing rather than a mechanical seal such as our Darley P100 pump and P6 pumps that you build for the US Navy and US Coast Guard? Asked by: DCC Chief Petty Officer Jim Wingate, US Coast Guard

Answer.

We have found that if the drip rate is less than 5 drips per minute, not enough water is passing through between the packing and the shaft to properly lube and cool the area. It will also act like a brake on the shaft - making it hard to turn and more difficult to start the engine. Without enough drip rate, the friction between the rotating shaft and the stationary packing will cause the shaft to wear quickly as well as heat up the shaft and packing to the point of melting the lubricant out of the packing. If the pump is run long enough without enough cooling, it can even heat the shaft to the point that it will cause damage to the shape of the shaft. If the shaft becomes worn, or misshapen (out of round), the packing drip rate will not stabilize, blowing the packing out very quickly and too much water will then flow through. Too fast of a drip rate can also be bad. The 60 drips per minute is a little more forgiving than the 5 drips per minute, but should still be used as a limit for a maximum drip rate to be allowed. Packing that is adjusted too loose can allow air to be sucked in through the packing during priming, reducing the height that the pump can be primed at. This will also negatively affect

the pump performance if the pump is able to be primed. When the drip rate starts to exceed the 60 drips per minute (or one drip per second) the speed and force of the water flowing between the shaft and packing can wash the packing material out quickly, creating voids around the shaft. Once voids are formed, water flows through the voided areas very easily, but may not be cooling the packing in other areas. The water flowing through the voided area will rapidly erode the packing from both sides of the void, increasing the Darley’s pump packing is still void’s size until the packing is potentially available on most pumps. completely washed out. It can take several Some customers prefer it due pellets of packing to be injected while the to the ease of maintenance pump is running slow and flowing water, to and reliability. work out all of the voids, once they have formed. Also, without packing all the way around the shaft in the stuffing box, there is nothing protecting against pump pressure forcing the shaft to one side, contacting the stuffing box, and causing rapid wear. As wear increases the space between the shaft and the stuffing box, it will become harder and harder to get the packing to hold adjustment, until it will not hold adjustment at all. When this happens, the pump will need to be rebuilt, replacing at least the stuffing box and shaft. When adjusting the packing drip rate, follow the packing adjustment instructions, 1200504, to adjust as close to the 5 drips per minute as practical. This will allow the longest run-time possible before needing adjustment again.

DARLEY IN THE NEWS

Darley Sets New World Record

What happens when you take industry leading engineering and mix it with the highest quality pump manufacturing process in the world? You end up with a product that far exceeds customer expectations, Darley’s Big Zeus fire pump. Darley’s manufacturing team in Chippewa Falls, WI fabricated the highest performance vehicle mounted (drivetrain powered) fire pump of all time. How does Darley continue to do it? Darley uses the skills and knowledge of the entire organization when Big Zeus Guinness World Record Certificate “going to the drawing board.” From machine operators to pump test technicians, engineers and executives, many Darley employees had a hand in developing the finest pump in the fire service. The Big Zeus industrial rated 6000 gpm (22,710 lpm) is the highest flowing midship fire pump on the market (with a Guinness world record) and the smoothest operating industrial fire pump of all time. The fire pump was on display at the Texas A & M (TEEX) industrial fire school where it was a spectacle for all to see. The pump had a stream profile that was tighter, longer, and more controllable than many seasoned operators have ever seen. If your department is looking to add a tool to its arsenal that will provide improved effectiveness when controlling large industrial fires, look no further. Darley has developed the Big Zeus to satisfy the demanding needs of the industrial firefighting community. For more information, contact kyledarley@darley.com.

From the Office of

Technology Today, Gone Tomorrow Darley released a new corporate video earlier this year and it got me thinking about our first VHS edition “Why Darley” from the late 1980’s. Back then, it was important to send a message to our customers that Darley was a high-tech company because we used “cell phones and fax machines.” Most of us wore ties to work, nobody knew what a spreadsheet was and co-workers viewed your productivity by the number of pink “Please Call” slips on your desk. Along the way we buried much of the technology from that era including typewriters, Telex machines, dictaphones and adding machines. When I talk to customers about the history of Darley I often comment, “Can you imagine what business was like in 1908 before cars were mass produced and much of the USA still didn’t have phone service?” It’s hard to fathom that we could have run a business today without Outlook, the Internet, social media or even stand-up desks. We had to be more resourceful back in the day, but we accomplished much of the same in just a different manner. There is no doubt that the world moves at a significantly faster pace today and the bar continues to be raised in terms of customer expectations. Technology is fleeting and often short lived. The next generation will look back on this decade and smile about the dated tools we use today. Great businesses embrace technology, but they endure because of their ideas, principles and customer relationships. A customer recently sent us a pristine copy of a 1950 Darley catalog with original mailing envelope. The cover read “42 Years of Success – Founded on Integrity and Service”. No mention of technology. Ryan Darley Becomes a Professional Firefighter My name is Ryan Darley and I work in International sales for Darley. This year I was hired as a Firefighter for the city of Plymouth, Minnesota. So far the courses I’ve completed are FF1, FF2, Hazmat1, Hazmat2 and I’ll begin my EMR or EMT classes this fall. I decided to join the department as a vehicle to give back to our community and to learn about the products we sell and the customers we serve at Darley. Going into Fire Academy I thought that I knew a bit about firefighting having been in the industry for 8+ years but was quickly humbled by what little I knew. It all started while I was sitting around the camp fire talking to my neighbor about community involvement and him being on the fire department. He told me about the great people he works with and experiences and rewards that come with being a first responder. I started the process with applications that progressed into agility tests, interviews, a commitment meeting with my wife and the chief, then I was offered the opportunity to be a part of the firefighting family. Fire Academy has lasted 6 months so far and consisted of both mental and physical testing. We were given different scenarios and sent through obstacles (Entanglement, Rapid Intervention, Firefighting, Primary Search, Rescue…) then debriefed on the good the bad and the ugly of how our teams handled each scenario. We took online tests a few days a week after reading our textbook on the different subjects: extrication, hazardous materials, response, Incident Command, rescue tools, pump operations, ventilation, the list goes on. We learned how to tie different knots for different purposes, we hooked up hoses, we put out fires and we studied fire behavior, we learned how to approach a hazmat situation, we learned how to approach a fire, assess the situation and make decisions based on our size up, resources and all the information available. We were loading our mental toolboxes and practicing over and over to make doing the right thing and doing it properly second nature. I’ve learned so much throughout my training and have an even greater respect for all of the first responders who risk their lives to help people they don’t even know. It is a very selfless career and I’ve been blessed to have great leaders and local experts in firefighting teaching me. I look forward to serving the community and being a part of the team that responds to the call when everyone else is running away.

FOURTH GENERATION DARLEY

Kevin Darley For the past few years I have been working in the media industry, a discipline within the field of marketing, serving the Gatorade and Propel sports drink brands. It has given me valuable perspective on how a brand speaks to their consumer, and what that means for a business. When I’m not working - I’m seeking new experiences and ideas. Whether I’m golfing, going to Jiu Jitsu or Yoga class, I try to keep busy with things I find interesting. The list of things I want to do keeps growing. Being a Darley is a unique experience to say the least. The Darley family shares a common purpose and history, which brings us together in a rare way. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this.
