DARLEY TIMES FROM THE OFFICE OF
PAUL DARLEY Looking Around Corners This is a historic time for the world, a renaissance perhaps, with the rate of change being faster than few could have imagined just two years ago. Velocity is a measurement that combines the rate of change and direction. This concept has never been more important to organizations. You need to make sure you’re focused on the right things, and you can’t be sitting back hoping things return to the way they were. If you miss this wave, there is no going back. An organization’s culture now, and in the future, will help determine its destiny. It’s been said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” We agree, but we also are focused on our longterm strategic direction and adjusting our sails. Leaders need to be able to look around corners and adapt to the changing times courageously, yet cautiously. At Darley, we are working fast and hard to embrace the positive changes, while holding on to those things that preserve our rich culture created by the generations before us. It’s a balancing act, but we are doing our best to be good stewards, while making adjustments with an eye toward the future. Are we doing everything right? Of course not, but we continue to listen, learn, adapt and be guided by our core values and guidance of others. Successful organizations are those that are agile, innovative and are exploring new ways to compete and attract and retain strong talent. To do so, organizations need to truly stand for something. Their employees and constituents must believe in their higher mission, their rallying cry, as shown in our adjacent mission statement. In a business where we serve warfighters and firefighters who sacrifice so much, our higher purpose is easy to see. We’ve been blessed with dedicated, hard-working, loyal Team Darley associates who are focused on this mission – many of them from military and first responder backgrounds. The awards shown on page one are humbly dedicated to these amazing people. If you ever think we’re not living up to these principles, I hope you’ll let me know.

Q What engine driven pump is best for my skid unit? Asked by: Jorge Campos, Forest Preserve of Cook County
A Though Darley can customize any skid unit, Darley offers 2 basic packages which we call Fast Attack 1 and 2. waynehable@darley.com The Fast Attack 1 is our economical offering for budget-minded fire departments and includes our Davey fire fighting line of twin impeller pumps, which we import from our partners in Australia. These twin impeller pumps are available on an assortment of Briggs and Honda engines up to 13 HP, which can provide 100 GPM at 100 PSI for a 1.5" line or 20 GPM at 150 PSI for a booster line. These units include a simple ergonomic choke and throttle on the engine as well as a pressure gauge. Our Fast Attack 2 includes either our 1-1/2AGE high pressure pump or our 2BE direct drive pump coupled to an 18 or 21 HP engine. The “G” in 1-1/2AGE stands for “gear drive” and typically spins the impeller almost three times faster than the 3600 rpm engine. At these speeds, where the impeller can be spinning at 10,000 rpm inside a small casing, you can see why it is important to always recirculate back to the tank as damage from heat generation from deadheading can occur very quickly. The advantage to Darley’s gear-driven pumps is that you can keep noise decibels and engine RPM down while increasing Wayne Hable, P.E. Chief Engineer

engine life and nozzle pressure. If the fire department wants more of a multi-purpose pump and specifies a 2.5" discharge for water transfer for such activities as filling tankers in a pinch, we advise them to look hard at our direct drive 2BE models which offer flows up to 400 GPM at lower pressures and pressures up to 140 PSI at flows in the 100 GPM range. Numerous customers also prefer to tie into their fire truck’s diesel fuel system to power their portable pump to avoid the mixing of fuels and for stabilization. Darley offers both the Darley and Davey models on a variety of diesel engines. Please contact jackmoore@darley.com for complete details or visit www.darley.com/pumps.
Darley and Daytona International Speedway Partner Under a new four-year agreement, Darley has become a proud provider of firefighting pumps and related equipment to the Daytona International Speedway (DIS). Under this agreement, Darley provided a new customized skid unit to DIS, that will be used on rapid response incidents. Darley logos have been placed on the product skid unit and all DIS track employees now have the Darley logo prominently displayed on their helmets. The agreement also calls for announcements to be made regularly via the public address messaging throughout all DIS NASCAR events. Daytona International Speedway, known as the World Center of Racing since 1959, is known for its 31˚ high banks and fast speeds around its 2.5 mile tri-oval. Troy Willrick, director of event & emergency services notes, “When you have vehicles approaching 200 mph, there will be incidents where rapid fire extinguishment may be necessary, and we trust Darley’s pumps to provide that protection.” Darley provided a custom Fast Attack 2 complete with a Pro Poly tank, Whelen light package and Hannay reel. DARLEY TIMES FROM THE OFFICE OF
JAMES LONG
Preserving Darley Catalog History In 1908, Will Darley began his modest direct mail business with the aspiration of one day achieving the success of the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog. Sears was the “Amazon.com” of the early 1900s and carried an amazing assortment of consumer products. Darley proceeded down that path initially offering a large selection of municipal equipment with his target audience being best described as “water works” accounts. During the early years, customers could buy such items as playground equipment, filing cabinets, lawn mowers, voting booths, dog catcher nets, adding machines, jail beds, fireworks and even bulletproof windshield glass (gangster era). The company continued to prosper and earned the reputation of being “America’s Municipal Supply Headquarters.” Since Darley had success selling products in all shapes and sizes out of his catalog, why not try fire engines? This decision in 1926 to devote only four pages to fire trucks changed the direction of our company. Back then, you could buy a fully decked out rig on a Ford chassis (with speeds up to 40 mph) for $720. If your budget was tight and you wanted to assemble your own vehicle, Darley would sell a kit to build your own, less chassis, for $390. By the early 1930s, we shifted gears and dedicated full catalogs entirely to Darley Champion Fire Trucks and Pumps with a substantially wider offering of complementary products like hose, valves, nozzles and tools. The Darley company as you know it was in full swing. In 1928 we made the following pledge to our customers about offering quality products at fair prices and support at any time. At Darley we believe many of these principles are timeless.
We’ve started down the path of scanning our old catalogs for future generations. There are priceless photos and copy in our archives that we are excited to begin sharing with you in the Darley Times and social media. James Long Executive VP, Fire & Defense Division jameslong@darley.com

INSIDE DARLEY: 2021 FAMILY MEETING Written by Hannah Janecek The Darley Family Meeting was held in Lake Geneva, WI, this past July. With the cancellation of the annual Christmas party due to the pandemic, all were especially grateful for the in-person meeting. The retreat was a great experience for Darley family members to learn about each other and the company. It Over 70 Darley family members attended our family brought together four generations of meeting July 16-18, 2021. They included 2nd, 3rd, 4th Darleys, with the eldest, Reg Darley, and 5th generation descendants of William S. Darley. nearly 90 years old, and the youngest almost one year old. The retreat kicked off with a fun day full of golfing, fishing, horseback riding and pickleball. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather. The next day shifted to the meeting portion of the trip. Annie Darley Freedman and Sophie Darley oversaw most of the day. The tables were mixed with family members from each branch. The middle of each table had a name with someone who was influential in the company. One of the activities was learning about these people such as Willy Boos, Joe O’Reily, and Pete Yates. We reflected on the past by learning about the people who got us where we are today. We also played icebreakers and the kids did an activity where they created a commercial to sell a pump. It was great to see everyone participating. Anne Smart from the Loyola Family Business Center led the afternoon portion. She talked about the important factors of family businesses. The day was full of reflection and learning. That evening we celebrated with a boat trip around Lake Geneva. On Sunday, we had Mass together and departed. Everyone really enjoyed the retreat. Hannah Janecek commented, “I am very glad that we have events like these to spend time together. It is really nice to bring together relatives from Chicago, Chippewa Falls, and everywhere in between. I look forward to having more experiences like this one.”
Classic Catalogs Since 1908 Over the past 113 years, Darley has produced a total of 276 catalogs. Our catalogs have changed quite a bit during this time, but our commitment to innovation and excellent customer service has not. Shown left is Pat Long, circa 1926, on a Darley Fire Engine built on a Ford Model T chassis.
EMPLOYEE PROFILE Joseph Darnell: Customer Service, Pump Division Joe joined the Darley Pump Division in September of 2017. He started as a stockroom clerk, moved to pump assembly and then to customer service. If you call the pump division customer service line, there is a good chance you will speak with Joe. Joe brings a wide range of skills and a strong mechanical aptitude to Darley. He holds a BS in physics, with a concentration in business administration, from the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse. He is a strong project manager with a constant focus on improvements through lean processes. Joe comments, “What I enjoy most about working at Darley is the variety. No two days have been the same and I get the opportunity to troubleshoot many customer issues. I may work on a challenge on a 10-year-old pump one day and the next day, dig into a product that was made before I was born. It is a testament to the Darley brand that we support everything ever made and so much product remains in service decades later. I love learning something new every day, and most days, that is before 9 am.” Joe is originally from Owen-Withee, WI, and now resides in Chippewa Falls, WI. Joe enjoys camping with his family nearly every summer weekend, and also hunting, hiking, gaming, rock collecting and blacksmithing. He is a part-time whiskey connoisseur who loves to show off his Scottish Heritage by attending company events in his kilt.

DARLEY TIMES
Remembering Patricia Long Pat Darley Long, the eldest child of W.S. Darley and his wife, Mary, passed away this August at the age of 96. When she was only 10, her father died from a heart attack, and from an early age she set the example for her younger siblings Bill, Julia and Reg. She was a strong student earning a scholarship to Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, and finished at the top of her class. Pat was the first Darley in her bloodline to complete her college education. After schooling, she found a calling working for the Chicago Sun Times newspaper and could complete any crossword puzzle well into her 90s. During the 1970s, she returned to work at W.S. Darley and served on the original board of directors and as corporate secretary. Pat was a dedicated, reliable and trustworthy part of the finance team for many years. What defined her was a commitment to family and a deep faith. She lived the core values that many of us aspire to today.
DARLEY PUMPS IN UNIQUE APPLICATIONS Boston Chooses Darley Pumps for High Water Rescue Truck Flooding is one of earth’s most common and destructive natural disasters and is not isolated to any singular type of topography or region. For this reason, high-water rescue vehicles are becoming a common specialty apparatus in many departments. General Truck Body’s First Responder Group recently worked with the city of Boston (MA) Fire Department to add two new multi-mission extreme duty vehicles to their fleet. These 6x6 high water rescue/brush trucks Boston FD demands Darley pumps on their are designed for flooding, storm recovery and other high water rescue trucks, similar to their natural disaster response. They are equipped with a engine fleet equipped with Darley pumps. Darley Fast Attack 1,000-gallon self-contained skid unit, which can be easily removed or installed using a forklift. They also feature a Darley 2-1/2AGE pump and a foam system with a 60-gallon foam cell. The truck is capable of operating in upwards of 50' of water and has a 22" ground clearance. These multipurpose units will replace the department’s large wildland engines, providing more capability and maneuverability for the city’s wooded and off-road areas. General Truck Body has included the high-water rescue package which consists of a hydraulic liftgate, deployable ladders, and an operator platform to increase the safety and efficiency of evacuation operations during high water scenarios or other operations. Many departments are now realizing the benefits of having a multi-use apparatus in their fleet. The threat of flooding and high-water events is constant. Our industry suppliers continue to innovate products that keep operators safe during these catastrophic events. For more information, please visit www.generalbody.com. The Darley 2-1/2AGE.

FOURTH GENERATION DARLEY
Hannah Janecek Hannah Janecek is a fourth-generation Darley. She is a sophomore at Xavier University, majoring in psychology with a minor in business. This summer, she got her first taste of working at Darley as an intern in the marketing department. Her focus was on fire equipment sales analysis, pricing and converting print catalogs to a digital format. Hannah completed about half of our catalog archives which was a daunting task. Some volumes were over 100 years old and in fragile condition. “It’s great to be able to preserve the company’s rich history in a way that can be passed on to a new generation,” added Hannah. “While most think of Darley has a fire equipment, pump or fire truck company it was interesting to see such a variety of products offered over the years.” There are currently 31 fourth-generation and ten fifth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.

Darley Defense shipped six skid units to the southern California base which covers 125,000 acres and has 80,000 residents and ten fire stations within the department. The 160-gallon units are being fitted to Ford F250s. Captain Levi Randolph stated, “The Kimtek team was more than accommodating on a few non-standard requests and the units really turned out nicely.”
Darley Rebuilds 1940 Pump for Fountain, CO Darley originally built pump serial #1003 in 1940. It was an M500 model. In April of 2021, it came back to us for repairs. Despite being more than 80-years old, it was in surprisingly good condition when we got it back, however it needed repair. After being rebuilt, it pumped its rated capacity of 510 gallons a minute at 120 PSI. The pump was sent to us by Darley Demander Chief James Maxon, of Fountain, CO, Fire Department. Chief Maxon was restoring the department’s 1941 Darley engine. The latest additions to his fleet are new 2021 Darley engines and aerial ladder. Chief Maxon was previously the fire chief at Sandoval County FD (NM) and was featured in our 2009 ad campaign when they “switched” his entire fleet to Darley pumps on Rosenbauer trucks. The proud team on this project included from left to right: Paul Danielson - customer service; Heston Hughes – pump assembler; Jerrod Bromeisl – R&D machinist; and Dale Issacs – test-room technician.

LDMX-MT Pump with MegaTrans™ Transmission The LDMX-MT, while a mouthful, follows the Darley naming designations and brings a “new-ish” designation to the table. To break down Darley’s naming designations; the LDM, Darley’s flagship single-stage midship pump, rated to 1750 GPM, utilizes the “L” series volute, fed by “D” dual suction impellers, driven by a transmission in the midship or “M” position. The ”X” designates the removal of Darley’s standard cast iron discharge manifold, valves, and discharge check valve. The “new-ish,” is the “MT” designation which stands for Darley’s MegaTrans™ transmission. The MegaTrans™ was introduced into the Darley product line roughly 10 years ago with the advent of our ZSM product. The Z series volute which is a 3000 GPM NFPA rated product, necessitated a larger impeller and therefore pump casing. This pump casing would have interfered with the drive shaft when coupled with our standard MagnaTrans™ transmission necessitating a deeper drop, or vertically taller transmission. Darley took this as an opportunity to align the drop on this new design with our competitor’s transmission sizing, which is a larger or taller transmission than our standard, thus allowing for Darley pumps to fit into apparatus manufacturers design envelopes for all competitive pump layouts. The MegaTrans™ has been proven to fit the mold of reliable and robust Darley pump products over the years on the ZS and we have taken this offering through several products including our ZS, LDM, EM, and PSM product lines allowing for continued flexibility in OEM apparatus layouts and design. Despite this transmission being larger, Darley’s Engineering Team actually reduced the weight in this larger design by over 30# compared to our LDMX by utilizing a Cast Aluminum gearbox, keeping with Darley’s best-in-class weight-to-performance ratios. In addition to the large following the MegaTrans™ has built over the last decade in the industrial firefighting segment from Texas The LDMX-MT offers an economical to Alberta and in fireboats from New York to California, the integration of the solution that provides OEMs the ability MegaTrans™ has lended itself to design layouts in major municipal fleets in both to design their own discharge manifold. Milwaukee, WI, and Baltimore County, MD. The LDMX-MT is available in ratings from 1250-1750 GPM and is one of the most efficient single stage midship pumps on the market.
