ZIFF celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style on 18th to 26th June, ZIFF celebrated Zanzibar’s long history, culture, and welcoming people. The festival’s theme of this year was “Let’s Talk About Film”.
The 25th ZIFF Festival of the Dhow Countries came to a thunderous close amidst fanfare of award winners at the glorious Old Fort amphitheatre in Zanzibar. The resplendent location was bathed in bright lights as the evening wound up towards the climax of the festival- the awards to the best and brightest in African and International films at the Zanzibar International Film Festival.
Opened by the resounding voice of Ghanaian singer-songwriter Bentuma Arthur, the festive mood could only surge when the awards were handedout. Tanzanian filmmaker Amil Shivji took the Golden Dhow for the Best Feature Film as well as for the Best East African film. The 25th Edition of the ZIFF ended with much merriment and confidence, and an abundance of joy. ZIFF2022 has been an exciting exploration of cultural exchanges, physically and through film, and the results are there for all to see: collaborative projects, exchange workshops, open discussions and deliberations, and artistic communication.
101 movies screened on 10 screens in Zanzibar at the Old Fort, 3 venues in the Maru Maru Hotel, a screen in the Michenzani Mall and the Mnara wa Makumbusho Kisonge, and more screenings took place in Warumbi, Paje, Makunduchi (Unguja), Pujini, Wete and Mkoani (Pemba). The Zanzibar Minister of Tourism and Heritage Mohamed Simai Said praised ZIFF as “a festival that was born out of the desire to communicate and share the darkened cinema space- still missing in Zanzibar”. To the Festival Director Prof Martin Mhando, the festival’s ending was an opportunity to thank sponsors, “who have given ZIFF confidence and with that… we have ploughed our fields and harvested much of value. We could not have done all this without your support, and for that, we say Asante sana”.
“Through the journeys of cinematic expression in the festival, there is still much to learn but through the many workshops, aimed at perfecting skills, and through panel discussions, film screenings and network functions many relations were built.”, said the festival director. The next festival will be held between 24th June and 2nd July with the theme, Identity.
