WELCOME Thanks to the vision of the City of Sydney, our city now has a remarkable new theatre, the Eternity Playhouse. They have delivered a magnificent heritage restoration of an iconic building and we are humbled and eternally grateful for the extraordinary opportunity that it affords our company and Australian theatre artists. At the very heart of Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s work is a firm belief that a theatre company should promote a democracy of ideas. We want our audiences to experience the power and possibilities of live theatre and for our productions to inspire reflection and dialogue about the world in which we live. Every show in 2014 brings together a new team of outstanding artists, who will present their unique artistic vision and perspectives on theatre and life.

BY tom murphy Director john o’hare Cast Patrick Dickson, Maeliosa Stafford

Marvin has left his wife and son for his male lover. Meanwhile, Trina has shacked up with Marvin’s shrink. Amongst this there’s also a Bar Mitzvah to organise. Is it too much to ask for everyone to get along?

Falsettos is a Tony Award-winning musical about the original modern family. Wickedly funny lyrics accompany a live piano score in this quirky yet tender tale about family, growing up and what it means to be a man.

JPW King is a quack psychiatrist with an insatiable taste for vodka. The recurring question is how to get through each day. Then a mysterious Irishman walks into his office wanting to sing like the great Italian tenor, Beniamino Gigli... Widely considered to be Murphy’s masterpiece, The Gigli Concert is a fiercely satirical and beautifully crafted play about the endurance of the human spirit and our ability to achieve the impossible.

“The first generation makes it, the second generation builds it, the third f**ks it up.” When Australia’s two largest media barons hand over power to their feckless sons, fortunes are risked, secrets exposed and lives are ruined. A smash hit in 2005 and 2006, this wickedly subversive comedy takes a scathing and satirical look at the ruthless world of Australia’s empire builders. This new version, created especially for the Eternity Playhouse stage, promises to be every bit as scandalous and uproariously funny.

WITH THE HAT BY NICK PAYNE Director ANTHONY SKUSE One relationship. Infinite possibilities.

Every Second is the story of two thirty-something couples hell bent on having a child. They’ve given up sushi and champagne, as well as their sanity. But how much more are they willing to sacrifice? Full of wry observations and bitter truths, Every Second takes a comedic look at a very modern dilemma. Don’t miss this brand new Australian play from one of the country’s most daring and witty playwrights.

Roland meets Marianne at a barbeque. She’s a physicist, he’s a beekeeper. They are an unlikely match, but this is not your average boy-meets-girl love story. Written by one of Britain’s most exciting young playwrights, Constellations is an explosive new play about love, fate and free will. Production Designer Gerald Xavier Mansfield Lighting Designer Sara Swersky Sound Designer Marty Jamieson

BY STEPHEN ADLY GUIRGIS Director ADAM COOK Things are looking up for recovering alcoholic and ex con Jackie and his girlfriend Veronica, until Jackie spots another man’s hat in their apartment… Fast-paced and uproarious, The Motherf**ker with the Hat is a gleefully foul-mouthed look at modern love and other addictions. Following rave reviews and a sold-out season in 2013, it makes a welcome return to the Sydney stage. Composer/Sound Design Marty Hailey Lighting Designer Kim Straatemeier Cast Troy Harrison, Megan O’Connell, Zoe Trilsbach, Nigel Turner-Carroll By arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd on behalf of Dramatists Play Service Inc, New York.

Felicity has it all; a successful Sydney restaurant, a home with water views and a handsome jet setting husband. But with the sudden visit by an old flame, infidelity could be on the cards. Felicity’s plans for a candle-lit reunion go awry when a string of unexpected visitors drop by.

Daylight Saving is a deliciously fast-paced comedy about love, loneliness, food and friendship by one of Australia’s most loved playwrights.

BOARD STAFF

Thanks to the vision of the City of Sydney, our city now has a remarkable new theatre, the Eternity Playhouse.

Our inaugural season at the Eternity Playhouse pays homage to independent artists and to theatre itself. From the grand to the intimate, from the tragic to the whimsical and from the small to the infinite, it’s all in our 2014 season. Finally, Darlinghurst Theatre Company will actually be in Darlinghurst! I’d like to sincerely thank local and renowned artist Kevin Connor for the use of his beautiful drawing of Darlinghurst that features on our brochure cover.

WELCOME

ETERNITY PLAYHOUSE

The Eternity Playhouse is a 126 year old heritage listed building, beautifully restored and renovated to create a state-of-the-art theatre and home for Darlinghurst Theatre Company. The former Baptist Tabernacle was named in honour of local Sydney identity, Arthur Stace, who became known as ‘Mr Eternity’. It was in this very church that Stace heard the sermon that inspired him to anonymously chalk the word ‘Eternity’ on the city’s footpaths for over 30 years. Darlinghurst Theatre Company has worked closely with the City of Sydney and architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer to create a grand and technically advanced theatre that is also welcoming, intimate and accessible. With its stunning architecture and iconic place in Sydney’s history, the Eternity Playhouse will be a very special place to see live theatre. For more about the Eternity Playhouse, including detailed visitor information, visit darlinghursttheatre.com.

Thanks to the vision of the City of Sydney, our city now has a remarkable new theatre, the Eternity Playhouse.
