WELCOME TO DAR THEATRE COMPAN I believe it is our role as a theatre company to explore and respond to the zeitgeist of our times. To do this we go straight to the source - to the people who make it their living and mission to do so. Artists, by their nature and their profession, engage with our world and provide a response to it. Artists investigate our lives. They create provocations and generate empathy. For the last 26 years, we’ve invited professional artists to put forward concepts for our company to fund, develop, produce and stage. It’s an exciting, intense and risky process, which requires a significant investment by our company. The reward is passionate theatre that leaps off the stage. Our 2019 season is laden with passion projects by inspiring and engaged artists. 2019 is the year of the Creative Hub for Darlinghurst Theatre Company. In addition to our theatre season, we’ll be staging other unique and captivating performances including comedy, dance, cabaret and music. To get even closer to the coalface of the zeitgeist we are also hosting public forums on prevailing issues and creative industry discussions. In 2019 we’ll remain true to the cause, stage more new work, explore diverse performances and generate discussion. You will be engaged, you will be entertained, and most of all – you will be welcomed. I hope you’ll join us!

SMALL MOUTH SOUNDS BY BESS WOHL

HOW DO YOU SPEAK YOUR MIND WHEN YOU CAN’T SAY A WORD? Six runaways from city life embark on a silent meditation retreat nestled away in the quiet of the woods. Their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect; how do you speak your mind when you’re forbidden to say a word? Hilariously profound, Bess Wohl’s smash hit transcends language and asks how do we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us? Small Mouth Sounds is “a play unlike any other” (Huffington Post), lauded for its luminous approach to storytelling. Described as “flawless” by Variety and a “quiet gem of a play” by the New York Times, don’t miss the Australian premiere of this ingenious work.

With songs from the critically-acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning song Falling Slowly, this spell-binding score will have you holding your breath from beginning to end. Original and unforgettable, Once draws you in from the very first note, grabs you by the heart strings and never lets go. “When the violins begin to play – and the accordion and the mandolin and the guitars and the cello – the instruments swell into a collection of distinctive voices melded into a single, universal feeling... RAINBOW’S END BY JANE HARRISON

Produced by Darlinghurst Theatre Company in association with Moogahlin Performing Arts

PLAYHOUSE

A FIRST NATIONS STORY ABOUT THE BOND OF FAMILY AND THE POWER OF THE LAND. It’s the 1950s in Shepparton, Victoria. Three generations of the Dear family live together in a rundown shack on the Goulburn River flats. Gladys yearns for a better life, a real home and a decent job. Her teenage daughter Dolly has dreams of becoming a nurse, while her resilient grandmother, Nan Dear, is resistant to change. Dolly falls for Errol, a travelling salesman, who offers her the prospect of another world. Together they embark on a journey of belonging where the search for a better life challenges the powerful bond that holds these women together. In this tender and funny play, where dreams for a fair go lie, acclaimed playwright, Jane Harrison, pens one family’s struggle for community acceptance in the Menzies era of Australia. “[Rainbow’s End] quietly makes its point, leaving you aware and impressed by the staunchness of these women, the gains they made and the dignity with which they dealt with hardship” Sydney Morning Herald

PUSSY MONOLOGUES DEVELOPED BY DARLINGHURST THEATRE COMPANY DIRECTOR AND LEAD WRITER VICTORIA MIDWINTER PITT A MANIFESTO FOR EQUALITY. Pussy Monologues is a celebration of the dark art of counter-attack, generously shared by some of Australia’s smartest, funniest and most thoughtful female voices. ‘Every great social justice movement has started with … people sitting in a circle, telling their personal stories that they think only happen to them … and realizing that if it’s happening to all these unique people, it’s political.’ – Gloria Steinem This is what #MeToo and Time’s Up have been about - that it’s not just me, it’s all of us. It’s political. Told from the true stories of ordinary and extraordinary women, Pussy Monologues uncovers the brave, ingenious and darkly funny ways women have survived, outlasted, outwitted and out-muscled the patriarchy. In this practical manifesto, Pussy Monologues seeks to provide an answer to “what’s next?” – to help navigate the journey to equality in a fiercely shifting landscape.

Led by award-winning documentary filmmaker and writer Victoria Midwinter Pitt (Afghanistan: Inside Australia’s War, Leaky Boat), Pussy Monologues shares exquisite accounts by women for everyone. “Some are small, private victories, some are very public triumphs, but when we piece them together, they tell us something really interesting. We’ve seen the wider fabric of the dreaded patriarchy. This show is about the wider fabric of the strengths it has taken us to keep fighting it: wit, guts, guile, acute emotional intelligence, and a very healthy appetite for counter-attack.” – Victoria Midwinter Pitt. JORDAN RASKOPOULOS

FAT MUSICALS

Wednesday 27 Feb, 7PM

Thursday 28 Feb, 7PM

Hi, Jordan Raskopoulos here, you know me from the internet. I’m doing a comedy show. It will go for an hour. I’ll tell some stories, sing some songs, do a little dance and probably offer you some biscuits. It’ll be great. You’ll love it. I’ve been doing this kind of thing for a while.

Join critically acclaimed cabaret stars Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood for a satirical look at musical theatre and its greatest (thinnest) leading ladies. With their trademark dry wit, stunning harmonies and feminist chutzpah, Marsden & Wood deliver an irreverent exploration of body image, tongues planted firmly in cheek.

RHYS NICHOLSON

Friday 01 Mar, 7PM Hello there. It’s me, Rhys, from comedy. Would you like to come to my show? I’m doing a one night only type situation for Mardi Gras. Why not, you know? It will be a fun mixture of jokes and stories I’ve told before from my last few shows as well as some brand new material from my upcoming tour. HOORAY! Either way it won’t be a disaster I don’t think. Why not come? Please come.

HISTORY

In 1992 Artistic Director and CEO Glenn Terry began plans to convert a rundown theatre inside the Wayside Chapel. Breathing new life into it, The Wayside Chapel theatre became a hot pot for new Australian and International plays. Since then, Darlinghurst Theatre Company has gone on to establish 3 Sydney theatre venues, including the conversion of Reginald Murphy Hall in Potts Point (now the Hayes Theatre Company) and of course our home here at the exquisite Eternity Playhouse in Darlinghurst. In our rich 26-year history, Darlinghurst Theatre Company has gone on to engage more than 3,800 artists, staged over 260 productions, invested in more than 110 new Australian plays and developed 3 additional leading theatre companies, including Milk Crate Theatre, Critical Stages and Darlo Drama. The historic tabernacle, designed in the Victorian Free Classical style by Jasper Stone, opened in 1887 and operated as a Baptist Church until 1996. It was purchased by the City of Sydney in 2004, which commissioned its transformation into a theatre that opened as the Eternity Playhouse in November 2013. It was at the Burton Street Tabernacle on 14th December that Arthur Stace was first inspired to chalk the word Eternity anonymously on Sydney’s streets more than half a million times over the next 37 years. 32
