FROM THE Head of School

When I think about the fact that Darlington is celebrating the 100th year of our boarding program, the word that comes quickly to mind is vision.

I remain in awe of the vision of our founding family, the Coopers, and the school’s early leaders. They knew almost immediately that the potential and greatness of Darlington went well beyond being a simple school for boys from the local area. They remained resilient, even through World War I, and celebrated that vision with 30 boarding students, all male, in 1923.

One hundred years later, that Darlington boarding program serves 200 students with a House System designed to support, encourage, and motivate each to be his or her best, not only for themselves but also for the greater good.

While much has changed - our school is co-ed and students come from far greater distances than the southeastern United Statesat the same time, our boys still live in Old Main, now Wilcox Hall. That connection should not be lost on us, as it was Dr. Wilcox, then-president of the school, who personally recruited those first 30 boys and families to invest in the Darlington boarding experience.

What a remarkable and historic decision they made. That leap of faith came from the belief in relationships, and the relationships

formed by those students with their classmates and faculty are the core of Darlington School.

As we move forward into our next 100 years as a boarding school, we are reminded that our vision for what comes next must always start with the value of personal relationships.

Later in this issue of Darlington Magazine, you’ll see boarding alumni share the word that comes to mind when they reflect on their boarding experience Darlington. I hope you enjoy reading.

Annual lectureship features president of Georgia Tech

Dr. Ángel Cabrera, the president of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the first native of Spain to serve as president of an American university, was the 19th speaker in Darlington’s annual Class of 1953 Lectureship Series in March.

“We appreciate Dr. Cabrera for taking the time to share his insights with our young people here at Darlington and are grateful to the Class of 1953 for establishing this annual lectureship that has brought so many interesting people to our campus,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations.

As president during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cabrera led Georgia Tech through one of the most critical times in its history to break records in student applications and enrollment, graduation rates, and research awards. Today, the institution is one of the fastest-growing and most research-intensive universities in the nation, serving more than 45,000 students and receiving nearly $1.3 billion in annual research awards.

“Do what you can with what you have in front of you,” he told students. “Push yourself to do better. Experiment. Look for different paths. Test yourself. And have fun. Life is just absolutely a wonderful journey.”

Prior to his work at Georgia Tech, his alma mater, Cabrera served as president of George Mason University in Virginia; president of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, now part of Arizona State University; and dean of IE Business School in Madrid.

He has been named a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum, a “Star of Europe” by Bloomberg Businessweek, a “Henry Crown Fellow” by the Aspen Institute, and a “Great Immigrant” by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Class of 1953 Lectureship Series was established in 2003 to commemorate the class’s 50th reunion.

Athletes earn state titles in spring sports

Spring season was a big success for Darlington athletics with studentathletes bringing home individual and team state titles in golf, tennis and track.

“Winning a state championship is a huge accomplishment and these student-athletes should be very proud,” said Athletic Director Eddie Guth. “Their hard work, dedication to their teams, and passion for their respective sports was evident throughout the season, and it makes us all very proud to wear purple.”

Ther Kotchasanmanee (’25) and the Darlington girls’ golf team claimed the individual and team state titles in Class A Division I. Kotchasanmanee shot 148 over the two-day tournament to finish as the individual state champion for the second-straight year, while the Lady Tigers shot 328 to win the team championship over Elbert County by 10 strokes.

The girls’ tennis team defeated Mount Vernon 3-2 to win Class A Division I, cliniching Darlington’s first state championship in the sport since 2006 and completing an undefeated 23-0 season. The crucial point of the contest fell squarely on the shoulders of Darlington’s No. 2 doubles pair of Audrey Abbott (’24) and Sophie Piller (’26), and the combo delivered in a big way, earning a thrilling three-set win. In track, Gus Gammage (’23) took home the individual state title in shot put and broke a Class A Division I state record with a throw of 54-05.00.

Nearly 500 guests donned their best purple and white attire for the event, which grossed $328,674 for Darlington’s parent organizations: Pre-K to 8 Tiger Pride, Upper School Tiger Pride, Athletic Booster Club, and Fine Arts Booster Club. This annual fundraiser, which takes place the Saturday before the first day of school, features dinner, live music, silent and live auctions, and a reverse raffle.

Board of Trustees elects three new members

Darlington’s Board of Trustees elected three new members at the May meeting.

Allison (Hunter) Brooks (’79, LD ’14) is an administrative assistant for Brooks Building Group Inc. in Rome, a company she co-founded with her husband. She has served Darlington previously as a member of the Alumni Council, Annual Fund Leadership Board and Strategic Planning Committee. She and her husband, Jeff (’79), are the parents of Kendall (Brooks) Headley (’08) and Hunter Brooks (’10, LD ’23).

“Allison’s deep connections and love for Darlington give her great perspective to serve the school during this important time in our history,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “The fact that Allison was a boarding student who ended up living in Rome and raising two Darlington alums who were day students speaks to

her strong relationships at the school. In addition, as a business person in Rome she understands both the strength and areas of potential of this community.”

Melinda Brown of Rome is a stayat-home mother and former adjunct professor at Shorter University. A dedicated parent volunteer, she is a former president of Pre-K to 8 Tiger Pride. She and her husband, Stephen, are the parents of Banks (’27), Connor (’23), and Lawson Brown (’21).

“Melinda is a thoughtful, discerning, big-picture thinker,” said Bell. “As the mother of two alums and one current student, her relationships with the school are deep. She has a clear understanding of the value of an independent school college-preparatory education and will serve well in helping us to continue

articulating the value of a Darlington education.”

Luke Lester (’84 LD ’13) of Rome is owner of Bond, James Bond Inc. He returns to the Board of Trustees after serving previously from 2014-2020. He is also a former president of the Alumni Council. He and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of Grace (’19) and Hattie James Lester (’23).

“I am thrilled that Luke agreed to rejoin the Board of Trustees,” said Bell. “I have worked with him on several boards, including Darlington’s, and always appreciate his insight, wisdom, and calm demeanor. Luke is an entrepreneur and that mindset will be valuable to us as we move forward.”

Retiring trustees included Kevin Evans (’87, LD ’14), Mary Helen (Wright) Heaner (’77) and John Ware.

Thanks to the generous support of our community and the work of volunteers, the 2022-2023 Darlington Fund surpassed its goal, raising a total of $1,246,864 to support students and teachers.

While competition was fierce, it was the boys of Moser House who scored enough points to be named RUMPUS champion in January. A highly anticipated weekend each year, RUMPUS is a multievent competition between the students in each of the dorms. Day students join boarding students and faculty to represent the houses in a series of events that challenge the mind and body, and points are earned based on performance, theme, and spirit.

“Every year, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community, and it makes me so proud to be a Tiger!” said trustee Andy Welborn (’85), chairman of The Darlington Fund. “Our teachers and students benefit from this every single day. Thank you for supporting their success in the classroom, on the field, on stage, in the lab, and across campus.”

Over 1,400 donors contributed.

“Our donors and volunteers graciously give back in so many ways each year,” said Julia (Douglas) Thomas (’07, LD ’15), director of annual giving. “We love to hear what Darlington means to them and why they continue to support the school however they can.”

Additionally, the third annual Giving Day: Giving for Connections in February brought in more than $130,000 from almost 400 donors.

Top volunteer, Class Agent and Alumni Council member Annie Rosen (’02,

LD ’18), brought her A game. “Giving Day was thrilling,” she said. “I’m always interested in a little friendly competition, and giving back to institutions that matter like Darlington is one of my top priorities. Connecting with former classmates in 2023 to make sure the Class of 2002 won for our decade was a blast.”

Thomas credits the Darlington Fund Leadership Team for their support.

“From Giving Day to Parents for Purple, our volunteers really stepped up to the challenge and made a huge impact in all of our campaigns,” she said. “We can’t wait to see what they will accomplish in 2024.”

24 participate in Leadership Darlington

Twenty-four alumni representing six states participated in the school’s Leadership Darlington program in March.

“Leadership Darlington is a prestigious and competitive opportunity for alumni to engage with their alma mater and school leaders on an in-depth, personal level,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “The program is designed to increase the number of alumni actively engaged with the school and develop the next generation of Darlington’s leadership.”

Members of the Class of 2023 include Tripp Bagby (’91), Hunter Brooks (’10), Patrick Cash (’91), Jon Chumbler (’04), Paige Collier (’88), Rosemary (McGowin) Corte (’90), Will Coxwell (’98), Kendall (Collins) Duggan (’97), Terar (Stewart) Everhart (’13), Lindsey (Mann) Field (’99), Robert Gaffney (’07), Ashley (Rice) Gomez (’97), Dave Huguenel (’03), Ransom James (’92), Andrew Lawrence (’03), Ben Levy (’93), Mary Elizabeth (Neville) Martin (’90), Amanda Mize (’00), Gillian (Fierer) O’Nan (’98), Kim Parnell (’98), Xaivier Ringer (’04), Austin Spooner (’12), Megan (Gates) Watters (’97) and Kevin Wood (’97).

Over two days, participants obtained an integrated view of Darlington, including the internal and external forces that affect the school’s direction and the challenges it faces. They also experienced an interchange with senior administrators and participated in discussions about the future. The program featured a keynote address by Honorary Chair Gordon Smith (’71), vice chair of Darlington’s Board of Trustees and retired executive director and chief operating officer of the United States Tennis Association.

“Taking part in Leadership Darlington was taking a walk down memory lane while looking into the future,” said Martin. “I was reminded of how unique and life-changing it is to be in education, and especially to be in education at Darlington. While Darlington is moving forward with fresh, invigorating, and inspirational ideas, the school is holding fast to what makes it an institution that cares first about what is best for the whole child.”

Ringer agreed, adding, “I walked away with a greater understanding of the hard work and dedication teachers, staff and administrators have to make Darlington unique. I recommend Leadership

CLASS OF 2023

The month of May was a busy one for graduating seniors as they prepared to say farewell to Darlington. End-of-the-year events like Prom, Baccalaureate and Commencement became rites of passage, inspiring lifelong memories that will live in the hearts of each individual. Forever bonded as a group, our 131 new alumni have created their own legacy at Darlington - for no other class in school history will have the same complexion as the Class of 2023.

Among them are a handful of state champions, four sets of twins and one set of triplets, an author, and several singer-songwriters, to name a few. They hail from 12 countries and 13 states. Eighteen are four-year boarding students, and 22 are Dar Babies (having attended since pre-K or kindergarten).

Fourteen have parents who are alumni, four have grandparents who are alumni, and one is a fifth-generation legacy. They have earned over $8.8 million in merit scholarships and are now attending 75 different colleges in 26 states, Canada and Israel.

But the Class of 2023 is special for countless other reasons, and the memories they made here will never be forgotten. Best of luck, graduates, as you move on to the next phase of your lives, and remember that your Darlington family is always here for you!

How did you come to attend Darlington?

LR: I transferred from Columbus High School at the beginning of my sophomore year. A number of boys from Columbus, Ga., had attended or were attending at the time, and my parents thought I would benefit from a Darlington education.

EA: I’m from Mills River, N.C., and came to Darlington to be a member of the Soccer Academy.

Why did you want to attend a boarding school?

LR: My parents wanted me to attend, but I wasn’t sure about being away from home. I attended summer school at Darlington the summer of 1967 and really enjoyed the experience of being more on my own. From there, I decided that I wanted to attend Darlington full-time.

EA: I originally wanted to attend because I loved Harry Potter growing up and thought going to school away from home was such a cool concept. But now, I realize that I was just ready to take that step of living away from my parents and growing on my own.

What was the boarding community like?

LR: The boarding population and the day students were a pretty homogeneous group of boys. We had students from as far away as Oklahoma and California, but no international students. The move to coeducation and the admission of a broader ethnic spectrum are certainly all for the better, I think.

EA: My freshman year, we had so many options of things to do, and I formed a close friend

Boarding Leaders Then & now

group. However, my sophomore year, we were locked down on campus due to COVID. That year is one of my favorites because the bonds we formed were closer than they would have been any other time. My junior year, I helped create activities for students to bond. I was able to watch new and returning students create their own unique groups and experiences that made an even more amazing boarding community.

What were you involved in?

LR: I played soccer, football, and baseball, and was a member of the D-Club. I was also active on the Dance Committee, which afforded us an opportunity to eat as many Krystal burgers as we could while cleaning the gym after every dance.

EA: I was a part of the Beekeeping Club, president of the Chemistry Club, head tutor of the Writing Center, Cooper House activity leader, head prefect of Cooper House, a member of our Student Activities Committee, a leader in our Weekend Activities Committee, and member of the U19 Soccer Academy.

What made you want to be a dorm leader?

LR: Then-Dean of Boys Dick Barkell had gotten to know me because my roommate, Tom Hendrickson, and I were the paper delivery boys in the dorms. He suggested we become dorm proctors our junior year. We were proctors on the third floor in Old Main and then in the Senior Dorm our last year. We didn’t have different houses, but were generally grouped in dorms by class.

EA: I wanted to be a leader from the day I got to Darlington. Cooper House’s community was indescribable freshman year. Everyone was friends with one another, and you wanted to

spend time in the dorm because you knew you were in a safe, welcoming environment. Being a part of such an amazing, tight-knit group of girls made me want to make every incoming student’s first year as amazing as mine was.

What are some of your most memorable experiences?

LR: Getting to know the day students and their families, interactions with girls at Thornwood and East Rome High School, and traveling to play teams in the Mid-South Association all over Georgia and Tennessee. Interacting with the faculty and their families on campus was also entertaining, fun, and impactful, particularly when I returned to Darlington as a member of the faculty and became a peer to those I had once addressed as Mr. or Mrs. That was certainly a weird adjustment to make!

EA: Hanging out in the duty office bonding with the girls; the hectic, sleepless week

Lee Redmond (’70), second row far left, and his football teammates. Lee Redmond (’70) and his grandson, Kasper, at the Ennis Rodeo in Montana.

In 1970, Lee Redmond graduated from an all-boys’ day and boarding school. Fifty-three years later, Emma Adams (’23) graduated from a coeducational school community that represents 19 states and 28 countries. Both served as leaders among their peers, Redmond as a dorm proctor and Adams as head prefect of Cooper House. Here, they reflect on their unique Darlington experiences and though much has changed in 53 years, the foundational values that have defined our school for nearly 120 years remain a guiding force in the lives of our graduates.

preparing for RUMPUS; and watching the girls smile and laugh during our dorm activities. My favorite experience was watching them grow throughout the year, especially the new students.

How has your boarding experience impacted who you are today?

LR: I was so much better prepared than many of my classmates at Washington and Lee who attended public schools and had not had the experience of a more independent lifestyle. The great thing about Darlington was that we were allowed to be more independent but, at the same time, we had faculty there to provide gentle guidance if it seemed we might be headed in a wrong direction.

EA: I would not be the person that I am today without Darlington. I have gained independence, responsibility and confidence. Living without the constant watchful eye of your parents is terrifying, but you grow from it, and with the guiding hand of Darlington’s faculty, I have been able to become my own person and form my own

ideals and opinions. I have also learned to take responsibility for my actions, that you have to be punctual with check-in times and classes, and that sleep actually is a necessity. Lastly, I have grown into a young woman who will, without fault, always be herself because the faculty at Darlington encouraged me to do so.

What comes to mind when you think of your graduation year?

LR: The Vietnam War was in full swing and turning 18 that year, my classmates and I had to sign up for the draft. Richard Nixon was president and anti-war demonstrations were occurring all over the country. Kent State happened that year. Many of the popular songs that year had anti-war themes and lyrics. The Manson trials were happening as Charlie Manson and his followers were tried for the Tate La Bianca Murders. The country was in great turmoil following the recent assassinations of both Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy in 1968. It was clearly an interesting time to be alive, to say the least.

EA: The things that come to mind are panicked coffee runs during office hours; obsessing over Taylor Swift with my best friend; hanging out in Cooper House’s duty office having some of the best conversations; putting my heart and soul into Cooper House; spending a bunch of time with all the heads of house because they are the most incredible people; but, most importantly, every second that I spent with my best friends Mika, Mollie, and Joey.

Describe your path after graduating from Darlington.

LR: After Darlington, I attended and graduated from Washington and Lee University with a double major in economics and German. Due to

the influence of Bill Supon, my German teacher at Darlington, I was placed directly into thirdyear German classes at W&L. After college, I returned to Darlington and was the alumni director and assistant development director. In addition, I taught German and coached JV soccer along with serving as a dormitory counselor. From there, I moved on to The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., as development director. In 1979, I joined a commercial real estate development company and spent the next 41 years in various capacities in commercial development in Florida and Southern California. I retired in 2020 as CEO of several commercial real estate companies and moved from California to Montana, where we now reside full time.

My wife, K.C., and I have five children and nine grandkids spread all over the country. We now spend time traveling and visiting them.

EA: I am attending The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where I am majoring in Security and Intelligence and Criminal Justice.

What do you hope for the future of Darlington?

LR: I hope Darlington never strays from its traditional values while nurturing young people toward open, exploratory and inquisitive minds. I hope it continues to provide a solid foundation of learning as well as to provide a full understanding of the discipline of learning to excel in college and the world beyond. These young people are the future leaders of tomorrow.

EA: I hope that Darlington continues to be the outstanding institution that it is. Darlington became a home for me, and I hope that it does the same for the many students yet to come.

In the fall of 1923, Darlington enrolled its first 30 boarding students, all male, most of whom had been personally recruited by thenPresident Dr. C.R. Wilcox. Today, 204 young men and women from 19 states and 28 countries call Darlington their home away from home. We asked our boarding alumni to share the word that comes to mind when they think of their Darlington experience and tell us why they chose that word. Here are some of their responses.

FANTASTIC

“My experience at Darlington has made me who I am today. I cherish and appreciate the opportunity and skills that Darlington has given me.”

SALUBRIOUS

“I genuinely appreciated my four years at Darlington, the amazing experiences, and people I was able to meet. It was overwhelming at first, moving away at age 14 to an unknown state and school. By the time I was graduating, I did not want to leave. Everyone who has the privilege to attend Darlington is blessed. Thank you to my teachers, staff, and friends for the wonderful experience.”

PIVOTAL

“My experience at Darlington was pivotal for so many reasons. The friends I made and the teachers that I had informed a lot of who I am today. They broadened my worldview, built my sense of empathy, increased my curiosity, and taught me to seek out experiences that challenged me as a person.”

- Adrianna Young (’16) pictured with former faculty member Beth Wilson

DIVERSE

“It was truly a privilege to live, learn, and develop alongside beautiful people who’d come from an array of backgrounds and ways of living. I’m forever grateful for the boarding program and especially grateful to my fellow boarding alumni who were willing to share their amazing cultures with me and the rest of our Darlington Community.”

PURPOSEFUL

“My experience gave me drive, direction and purpose. Prior to Darlington, my high school career represented more of an existence. You don’t get drive, direction and purpose from simply existing. Friends, education, life experiences and the trust Darlington put in me changed my life for the better forever.”

LIFE-CHANGING

“Sitting in a tree behind the Home-on-the-Hill on a cold, dreary, fall day, just having done poorly on a Geometry test even though I had studied so hard, I came to the realization that if you honestly gave 110% – win or lose – that was all that I could do. I should learn from the experience, be proud of what and who I was, and move on being the very best Lee Epting that I could be. This has been my philosophy of life ever since that day. Coming to this realization, while in that tree, as I said, has been life-changing in the best of all ways.”

EMPOWERING

“The boarding program gave me a chance to be more independent and empowered me to make the right decisions, which set me up for better success in college and life.” - Kate (Daniel) Vinyard (‘96, LD ’15), at right, pictured with Ashley Wright (’96, LD ’20)

Tommy Atha

Road to Retirement

It might surprise you to know that longtime head football coach Tommy Atha, who retired from Darlington this past spring after three decades of service, started his career in retail management. But it didn’t take him very long to realize that he was meant to be on the sidelines.

“I remember sitting in a cubicle on a Saturday afternoon listening to the Georgia game on the radio in September thinking, ‘What in the world am I doing?’” he said. “I picked up the phone and called my dad and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I want to be a football coach!’”

The rest is history. Atha spent two years teaching and coaching at his alma mater, Rockmart High School, before he and his wife, Cathe, moved to the Darlington campus in 1993. During his tenure as a Tiger, he would teach physical education,

civics, world geography, and American history, and coach varsity football; varsity, JV, and middle school girls’ basketball; and varsity track. He even had the opportunity to coach all four of his children, Maggie Beth (Atha) Ralston (’14), Tommy (’19), Anna Claire (’17) and Katherine.

“It has been a tremendous honor for me to serve as a teacher and coach at Darlington,” said Atha. “This has been a great place for my family and my kids. The relationships with my players and colleagues over the years are what has been most important to me. It has been a heck of a ride.”

With 179 career wins under his belt, Atha is the winningest football coach in Darlington history. He served as an assistant coach during the Tigers’ state championship season in 1998 and, as head football coach for 21 years, he led the team to the state playoffs 19 times and helped them secure seven region championships.

“I believe more life lessons are taught in athletics than anywhere else in our society,” said Atha. “In

athletics, you learn how to fail and go back and try again. You learn the correlation between hard work and success. You learn the value of teamwork and sacrifice for the benefit of others.

“I am proud to see so many successful men and women that I have had the wonderful pleasure to coach through football and basketball,” he continued. “When I see my former players – who are husbands and wives and mothers and fathers who have gone on to be successful in their working careers –it’s extremely rewarding.”

Atha’s passion for coaching dates back to his own experience as a young athlete.

“When I was a boy, there was a painting in the press box at our youth baseball field of a coach tying the shoes of a kid. It read, ‘A man never stood so tall as when he knelt to help a child.’ That always resonated with me,” he said. “I have loved being able to help kids develop self-confidence, whether in the classroom or on the field.

“Education, to me, is much less about expounding what you know and more about encouraging and inspiring kids to seek answers for themselves and learn to push themselves farther than they think they can go,” he added. “I also believe that coaching and teaching are one in the same just in different venues. Great coaches are great teachers.”

Atha earned numerous accolades during his coaching career at Darlington and was named AllRegion Football Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year last season after leading the Tigers to back-to-back region championships. Last fall, the school’s newly renovated weight room, the Pierce Tiger Pit, was dedicated in his honor.

“Tommy will long be remembered for coining the phrase ‘Ain’t nothing like a Tiger on Friday night,’” said Head of School Brent Bell, “and we appreciate his hard work and dedication to making this statement true for the past three decades.”

Larry Williams (’67)

Distinguished Alumnus

Upon graduating from Darlington, Larry Williams (’67) was honored to receive the Senior Scroll for Outstanding Service to the Darlington Community. His loyal service to the school continued well after his departure, and so it really was no surprise that – 55 years later – he was awarded the 2022 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

“This is a real honor for me to be able to introduce my dear, dear, dear friend of 60 years, Larry Callaway Williams,” said Lee Thuston (’67) during the award presentation last October. “What you don’t read, what you can’t see, and what you don’t understand unless you pay attention to a person like Larry Williams is what he’s done for this school.

“He has spent 22 years as a trustee, which is an enormous commitment. He has been something high up in all the major campaigns … He’s probably spent thousands of hours on the telephone, writing letters, cajoling people to support these campaigns,” Thuston continued.

“He’s done it with no recognition in mind. He’s done it because of his love for Darlington. He is very, very deserving of this award today. When our motto – Wisdom More Than Knowledge, Service Beyond Self, Honor Above Everything – was written, I believe that they had a guy like Larry Williams in mind because he epitomizes that to me.”

After Darlington, Williams earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia before beginning his 42-year career in the financial advisory sector. His experience spans a comprehensive range of industries, including printing and packaging, healthcare services, manufacturing, mining, specialty chemicals, and franchising.

He retired in 2017 as a managing director of the investment banking team at Fifth Third Securities. Prior

to joining Fifth Third, he co-founded the Breckenridge Group Inc., a boutique investment banking firm focused primarily on the middle market that played a significant role in the consolidation of the U.S. long distance telecommunications industry. He served previously as an executive vice president with Stringer, Wyatt & Williams Inc., a vice president for investment banking with The Robinson-Humphrey Co. Inc., director of finance and development for the Cecil B. Day Co., and owner and founder of the Days Inns of America motel chain.

Williams has been involved in numerous philanthropic and community service activities, including the Rotary Club of Buckhead, the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Urology Advisory Board, the Society of International Business Fellows, and the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholarship Foundation National Selection Committee.

He is currently a member of the Boards of Directors of Bonanza Royalties LLC, Portola Minerals Co. and Warbird Consulting Partners LLC. He previously served on the BT Capital Investment Advisory Board; the Bankers Trust Co. equity investment subsidiary; and the Boards of Directors of Shorewood Packaging Corp., Portola Packaging Inc., and American Gilsonite Co.

“I stand here today in front of you both humbled and grateful for the recognition that Darlington

has decided to bestow on me this morning,” said Williams. “My goal is to just help the school. To help the school succeed as a predominant boarding and day school in the preparation of its students to successfully enter and attend college.”

As part of his lifelong commitment to Darlington, Williams served multiple terms on the Board of Trustees before being named a Life Trustee in 2020. He has also been an active fundraiser in three of the school’s capital campaigns and is a longtime member of the J.J. Darlington Giving Society.

“When I think about the Darlington we experienced and what it meant to me, it’s easy for me to realize that my seven years at Darlington changed my life … It was Darlington that laid the foundation for the later successes in my life,” said Williams.

“To the lucky students here today, I want to stress the importance of the bonds, the friendships, the special relationships forged in your time together here at Darlington. These are friendships for life. Keep them. Work hard. Make them important for the rest of your lives. It is the legacy of these relationships that the Darlington experience has given you. Your legacy is more than just giving money to your favorite charities; it is the impact you make on the lives around you with your time and your expertise, in addition to your resources. Your legacy is how you are remembered.”

Katharine (French) Flory (’82, LD ’20)

A legacy of love for Darlington

You might say that Darlington was Katharine (French) Flory’s (’82) window to the world. After a transformative three-year boarding experience, she went on to study abroad in college, travel extensively and forge a successful 30+-year career at a large biopharmaceutical company with a global presence.

“My Darlington experience lives with me every day,” she said. “Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I appreciate how the education, experiences, friendships, and opportunities gained at Darlington were the catalysts for my future. The educational experience Darlington provided opened so many doors for me and allowed me to be the person I am today. I am so thankful that I attended Darlington. The impact it had on my life has been extraordinary. I love that literally, you can be anywhere and have a Darlington connection.”

Flory and her best friend, Charlotte (Rushin) Gunby (’83), enrolled at Darlington as sophomores in search of adventure, independence, and opportunity. A resident of the now-razed Trippeer Dorm, she got up early every weekday to take attendance at breakfast and spent a lot of time in the Zelle darkroom developing film for the Jabberwokk. Her three years as a student were prime preparation for college, while including plenty of fun and friendships that would stand the test of time.

“When I arrived as a freshman at Hollins University, I was way ahead of the game as far as dormitory life and the academic responsibilities required of a new college student,” said Flory, who would go on to work in London and Washington, D.C., before settling down with her husband, John, in their current home city of Columbus, Ga.

The couple would have four children – a son and triplet girls –and Flory was thrilled when one of her daughters, Kate (’17), decided she wanted to be a boarding student at Darlington. She enrolled in ninth grade and took advantage of all the school has to offer, even becoming managing editor of her mother’s favorite student involvement, the Jabberwokk.

“Kate had heard about Darlington all of her life and, like me, was excited to take her educational experience to another level,” said Flory, who works in access and reimbursement for AbbVie’s immunology division. “Darlington had grown in so many ways from the early 1980s. The opportunities available to Kate were exponential – educational, leadership, athletic, college counseling, and extracurricular. I am very grateful for the experience Kate had and thankful that she chose to expand on my footsteps at Darlington!”

Since Kate’s graduation from Darlington in 2017, Flory has become even more involved with the school through the Leadership Darlington program and as a member of the Board of Trustees.

“Appreciating my own Darlington experience and my daughter’s as well has made me very passionate about giving back to the school,” she said. “I am very humbled and honored to serve [as a trustee] and have an impact on the direction of Darlington’s future, which is very bright!”

Again following in her mother’s footsteps, Kate also stays connected to the school as an active member of the Young Alumni Council. She even served as chair of Giving Day in February.

“What I have loved and will always love about Darlington is its continued focus on the students and always striving to improve student opportunities and experiences,” said Flory. “I am so thankful for my own experience and Kate’s experience. I contribute because I want the school to continue to grow and offer opportunities above and beyond for the students. It’s vitally important for alumni to stay engaged because each of us has a part of us that is because of our Darlington experience. It would be wonderful if everyone would give back just a little bit –what a difference it would make for the school.”

Calista (Harden) Smith (’95, LD ’18)

Focused on the greater good

Calista (Harden) Smith (’95, LD ’18) knew as early as sixth grade that she wanted to go to boarding school. She was fascinated by the idea of living and learning in the same space, and jumped at the chance to move from Ohio to Georgia to attend Darlington her freshman year.

“I found out about Darlington at a school fair sponsored by the Queen City Foundation in Cincinnati,” she said. “Queen City Foundation was affiliated with A Better Chance, which helps students of color and low-income families find independent schools.”

Smith loved life on campus and stayed busy with friends, band, cheerleading, debate, and her work on The Darlingtonian . Junior year, she became a resident assistant in Trippeer and took great pride in helping ensure that her dormmates’

boarding experience was as positive as hers.

“My favorite memory as an RA was getting to know the other students, almost like a big sister,” she said. “When you are young, you have a lot of assumptions about people from other communities or places. Media may make you think that someone’s life is all perfect, or all dangerous or all boring. I saw up close the humanity in all of us. We all had things that brought us joy and things that brought us pain. No matter if your family is financially rich or poor, if you are from rural or urban communities, if you are from the State of Georgia or the country of Georgia, we can all relate to each other if we make an effort to connect.”

Smith’s success at Darlington helped her achieve her goal of earning a full scholarship to college. She attended Villanova University, where she studied communications and participated in the Honors Program, and would later earn her MBA from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

She returned to Cincinnati and started her career with KnowledgeWorks Foundation, holding various roles in public relations, program evaluation, development, and grant selection and monitoring. She would go on to work in consulting, industrial program management and business development before eventually starting Scale Strategic Solutions in 2011.

“It was a winding journey that was a series of walking through the next open door,” said Smith. “I never wanted to start my own business until I started my own business, but I always wanted to be involved in the social sectors like education, public health, social services.”

Scale Strategic Solutions, which aims to transform information into action with expertise and love, provides continuous improvement services, including strategic planning, organizational development, and program evaluation in education, public health, social services, and

economic development. A certified project management professional (PMP), Smith leads the organization in efforts focused on the greater good for agencies and communities.

The alumna credits Darlington with helping to prepare her for our global world.

“I think there are three parts to preparation for a global world,” she said. “The first is knowing who you are and that you have a unique place in this world. I think Darlington gave space for me to learn more about myself and what God had gifted to me. The second part is exposure to a setting to see what the unique gifts of other students are. The third is the context that we all have to figure it out together, particularly in the spirit of ‘Wisdom More Than Knowledge.’ We have to not just know the facts but understand the facts. We can’t just know people; we have to understand people.”

Smith often reflects on her boarding experience at Darlington, how well it prepared her for both college and life, and the connectedness of the school community as a whole. Her appreciation has led her to support and engage with the school in various ways, including participation in Leadership Darlington and service on the Alumni Council.

“Giving back is important to me because I came from a family of generous people,” she said. “It is in my blood to serve and honor my roots. Darlington is a part of my roots; it’s part of where I am from just like the Edgemont neighborhood in Dayton, Ohio. I also want to support Darlington in living out its vision and providing an even better opportunity for the next generation. I hope to see an increasingly inclusive Darlington that continues to transform students into leaders that make our world a better place from boardrooms to barns, from classrooms to shop floors, from courthouses to legislative assemblies, from homes to public spaces.”

Austin Spooner (’12, LD ’23), a class agent and inaugural president of the Young Alumni Council, says Darlington helped instill in him a passion for public service. Now a resident of New York City, the four-year boarding student serves the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) as a staff attorney.

Dave Huguenel (’03, LD ’23), managing director of political strategic media firm Go Big Media Inc., came to Darlington as a freshman boarding student from Saudi Arabia. His father worked for Exxon Mobil, so the alum spent much of his childhood in places like Australia and the Middle East. Darlington and Rome truly became “home,” so much so that he and his wife, Jody (Milford ’05) moved back to the area in 2022 to raise their family.

Lang Cheves (’60, LD ’12) enrolled as a boarding student in the fall of 1957 after losing his father in a tragic car accident. As one of four children, he says Darlington helped him mature and provided the kind of discipline only a father can give. It was also the place where he first met his wife, Kay (Wyatt ’63T), who he would start dating in college.

Leaving a Legacy

Jim Fort (’44), Life Trustee

Jim Fort, who died Sept, 9, 2022, was a man of many talents who did remarkable things for the betterment of his community.

He is remembered for his many business accomplishments through his work with Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville, S.C., and American Media

Vernon Grizzard Sr., Life Trustee

Vernon Grizzard, who died June 16, 2022, served on the Board of Trustees during a formative time in Darlington’s history and made a lasting impact on the school.

“He was a strong advocate and leader in the integration of the school and the enrollment of our first black students,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “He was also on the committee

Services, as well as for his extensive service to organizations that aligned with his passion for education, art, history and nature, to name a few. Throughout his life, Fort loved and supported Darlington as an alumnus, chairman of the Board of Visitors, Campaign for Darlington committee member, and member of the Board of Trustees.

assigned to study co-education at Darlington and co-signed the motion that led to the merger of Darlington School and Thornwood School. Both decisions are profound moments in the history of the school.”

Though Grizzard is remembered for his many business accomplishments and his contributions to the economic development of Rome and Floyd County, those who knew him best understand that his joy came from helping others lift themselves up,

“Jim was one of Darlington’s most loyal and generous donors, giving considerably throughout his life to support the mission and growth of the school,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “He was a true gentleman who lived the Darlington ideals of wisdom, service, and honor.”

bettering themselves through education and life experiences. A loyal supporter of Darlington, Grizzard’s generosity has made it possible for hundreds of students to attend the school. He and his family established the Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship to provide financial aid to young people from Rome and Floyd County. He also supported many other scholarships and financial aid awards.

Villa (Sulzbacher) Hizer (’66T, LD ’12), who died Feb. 6, 2023, set the example of what it means to give to the greater good.

Being active in the Rome community was her family’s legacy, and Hizer served and helped guide numerous organizations over the years, including the Boys & Girls

Clubs of Northwest Georgia, Junior Service League, and Chieftains Museum, to name a few. Her legacy of service to Darlington runs deep and includes 12 years on the Alumni Council and 16 years as a class agent. A generous supporter of the school, she also served on the Thornwood Cabinet for the Second Century Campaign and the Thornwood Restoration Campaign Cabinet. Her dedication is among the many reasons she was given

Darlington’s 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award.

“Villa was a true light in the Darlington Community,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “Whether she was making calls for a fundraising campaign or writing notes to welcome new students to Darlington, she made everyone around her feel like they were loved. Her strength, grace, and fighting spirit were an inspiration to me, and to many in our community.”

Dr. Frank Wilson (’46), who died May 31, 2023, lived his life to embody the ideals of wisdom, service and honor.

“A highly respected physician and teacher, Frank started his career in medicine as an orthopedic physician,” said Head of School Brent Bell.

“He worked tirelessly to care for the well-being and health of others and a lifelong pursuit of passing that knowledge along to the next generation by being named chief of the Division of Orthopedics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until his retirement in 1996.” His distinguished career is among the many reasons he was selected to be Darlington’s 1997 Distinguished Alumnus.

Wilson was a generous man to everyone, including his alma mater. In addition to giving annually and supporting capital campaigns, he and his wife, Ann, established the Frank and Ann Wilson Scholarship to provide financial aid to a deserving student based on his or her academic achievement, character, and leadership qualities. He also contributed a collection of books to the school’s library.
