Contents: Being a teacher at Darlington includes typical things like curriculum development, lesson planning, and assessments, but it also means getting involved in the life of the school beyond your classroom. Every January, faculty members like Assistant Director of Upper School Brant Evans host a spirited rally modeled after ESPN’s “College GameDay” to kick off RUMPUS Weekend, a highly anticipated, multi-event competition between the students in each of the dorms. Day students join boarding students and faculty to represent the houses in a series of events that challenge the mind and body, and points are earned based on performance, theme, and spirit. While competition was fierce, it was the boys of Summerbell House who scored enough points throughout the weekend to be named RUMPUS champion.

FROM THE Head of School
“Joseph J. Darlington had exemplified for Mr. Cooper what he had considered to be the ideal relationship between teacher and pupil, wherein mutual endeavor, interest, and respect was of such a nature as to foster the fullest cooperation, not only in matters of intellectual achievement, but also for the development of character and manhood.” - Jabberwokk, 1937
This quotation, found in the 1937 yearbook, provides insight regarding the reasons why the Cooper family chose to name their new school Darlington, and also sets the framework for the model of a Darlington faculty member. This model began from the very beginning as Mr. Cooper consulted with J.J. Darlington and took his recommendation in the hiring of the school’s first headmaster, Dr. James Ross McCain. When the school started, Dr. McCain was the faculty, teaching every subject and every boy. He set the standard of mutual endeavor, interest and respect that has been followed for 120 years.
Today, our teaching faculty numbers more than 150, and while some of the language has changed, the commitment, competence, and care have not. Like J.J. Darlington, our teachers seek to embody for our students a commitment to Wisdom More Than Knowledge through an active learning environment. While highly trained in their craft, it is their humanity that ultimately separates us from the rest. Today’s Darlington teacher is accessible and
encouraging to all students. This commitment is the outward sign of the mutual respect between teachers and students that is at the heart of Darlington. It is the most vital, and fragile, relationship that we have, and one that must be fostered positively on a daily basis.
In conversation with alumni, in our alumni survey results, and in my conversation with seniors each year, it is their teachers who’ve made the difference in their Darlington experience. It is the teachers that challenge them, that push them to do more than they thought they could, and who demonstrate through their clarity and consistency a desire for student success. You will see those teachers in the pages of this magazine, and I know you will be reminded of those who made a difference in your life.
Dr. Bob Hortman (’72) was presented with the 2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award during Alumni Weekend last fall.
“Dr. Bob Hortman is a retired dentist whose passion for education and philanthropy has resonated throughout the Darlington and Rome community for decades,” said Scott Dozier (’73), who served as chairman of the Board of
Trustees until May. “His legacy is deeply intertwined with our history, and his commitment to excellence is evident in the numerous roles he has assumed over the years ... in recognition of his unwavering dedication, his tireless efforts on behalf of Darlington, and his commitment to nurturing the school’s future, we are proud to celebrate Bob Hortman as an exemplary member of our community. His remarkable contributions and enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations of Darlington alumni, students, and friends.”
A proud member of the Class of 1972, Hortman’s dedication to Darlington is evident through his past role as a trustee and board chair, and now as Life Trustee. He has been an active participant in Career Day presentations and has served on the Alumni Council and as Athletic Booster Club president. His contributions to The Darlington Fund Board Leadership, Heritage Society, and Strategic Planning Committee further demonstrate his commitment to shaping the future of the school.
Outside the educational sphere, Hortman’s influence extends into various aspects of community life, including First Baptist Church, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Georgia, the Exchange Club of Rome, the Family Resource Center, Habitat for Humanity, Coosa Valley Fair, the United Way of Rome, and the Floyd County Baptist Association’s Free Dental Clinic. In 2013, he was recognized with the Heart of the Community Award for his outstanding service in Rome and Floyd County.
Established in 1983 and given by the Alumni Council, the Distinguished Alumnus/na Award is presented annually to Darlington or Thornwood alumni representing one or more of the following areas: notable achievement in professional field; service to his or her community, state, or nation; service to the arts, sciences, or humanitarian causes; and loyalty to Darlington.

Teams, individuals earn state titles in spring sports
Spring season was a big success for Darlington athletics with studentathletes bringing home state titles in boys’ tennis and track.
“Winning a state championship is a huge accomplishment and these studentathletes should be very proud,” said Athletic Director Eddie Guth. “Their hard work, dedication to their teams, and passion for their respective sports was evident throughout the season, and it makes us all very proud to wear purple.”
The boys’ tennis team outlasted Mount Vernon in a long, grueling Class A Division I State Championship Match at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College, highlighted by a clutch win in three sets by No. 2 singles player Murray Ellington (’26) for the decisive point in a 3-2 victory as the Tigers hoisted the championship trophy.
“I’m just so proud of this team,” said head coach Betina Fuentes. “This state title is something we’ve had our eyes on since January, and every move we’ve made has been pointed toward trying to get better and get here to the finals to give ourselves a chance. For these boys to pull it off is just incredible. They are a true team that works hard and pulls for each other.”
The boys’ track and field team put together several strong performances over multiple events during the three-day Class A Division I State Championship to compile 92 points, which was good enough to narrowly edge out Athens Christian by one for the team state title at Barron Stadium.
The Tigers had a trio of statechampionship finishes, including Grant Hutton (’24) in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 8 inches; the 4x200 meter relay team of Brooke Temple (’27), Sammy Kunczewski (’25), Link Lignell (’24) and Joe Womack (’24), who crossed the finish line first with a time of 1 minute, 27.86 seconds; and the 4x400 relay team of Womack, Temple, Lignell and Anthony Natarella (’24), who finished first with a 3:22.37.
“What these guys accomplished this season was the result of several years of hard work and dedication,” said head coach Kevin Hunt. “Our coaching staff knew for the last few years that we had a special group, and I could not be more proud of these guys for what they accomplished. Several things need to fall into place to win a championship, and these guys put all of the puzzle pieces together and refused to accept anything but a championship this season.”

21 participate in Leadership Darlington
Twenty-one alumni representing seven states and two countries participated in the school’s Leadership Darlington program in March.
“Leadership Darlington is a prestigious and competitive opportunity for alumni to engage with their alma mater and school leaders on an in-depth, personal level,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “The program is designed to increase the number of alumni actively engaged with the school and develop the next generation of Darlington’s leadership.”
Members of the Class of 2024 include Robert Alford (’92), Dr. Valerie (Woods) Ambrose (’98), Heather Bowman (’97), Lauren (McDaniel) Chumbler (’09), Steve Chumbler (’07), Steve Earle (’83), Myles Englis (’12), Lucas Greenberg (’14), Vic Hixon (’92), Cooper Holmes (’02), Noah Katz (’14), Sarah (Manning) Keene (’14), Dr. Trey Lee III (’88), Dawit Lemma (’97), Lee (Taylor) Morris (’07), Morgan (Pollard) Patel (’13), Carol (Culpepper) Seal (’90), David Sewell (’75), Katie (Flint) Smith (’09), Lauren (Muller) Stone (’02) and Chase Tolbert (’12).
“Our class had graduate representation covering a 50-year span of Darlington history and regardless of generation, each graduate had one thing in common; they each reflected the school motto of Wisdom More Than Knowledge - Service
Beyond Self - Honor Above Everything,” said Sewell.
Over two days, participants obtained an integrated view of Darlington, including the internal and external forces that affect the school’s direction and the challenges it faces. They also experienced an interchange with senior administrators and participated in discussions about the future. The program featured a keynote address by Honorary Chair Gordon Smith (’71), chairman of Darlington’s Board of Trustees and retired executive director and CEO of the United States Tennis Association.
“Leadership Darlington not only provided a glimpse of the school that I have never seen before, it also was presented in a way that gave me the ability to visualize my contribution to the school,” said Smith.
Lauren Chumbler agreed, adding, “It was an extremely informative and valuable experience in learning about the school’s past, present, and future. Seeing the school from a different perspective was eye-opening. I highly recommend Leadership Darlington to any alumni that have the opportunity to attend.”

CLASS OF 2024
The month of May was a busy one for graduating seniors as they prepared to say farewell to Darlington. End-of-the-year events like Prom, Baccalaureate and Commencement became rites of passage, inspiring lifelong memories that will live in the hearts of each individual. Forever bonded as a group, our 104 new alumni have created their own legacy at Darlington - for no other class in school history will have the same complexion as the Class of 2024.
Among them are a handful of state champions and national team members, servant leaders, a farmer, and a costume designer, to name a few. They hail from 12 countries and 11 states. Seventeen are four-year boarding students, and 11 are Dar Babies (having attended since pre-K or kindergarten). Nine have parents who are alumni, three have grandparents who are alumni and 30 in total have relatives that have graduated from Darlington. They have earned $7.5 million in merit scholarships and will attend 56 different colleges in 21 states and Washington, D.C.
But the Class of 2024 is special for countless other reasons, and the memories they made here will never be forgotten. Best of luck, graduates, as you move on to the next phase of your lives, and remember that your Darlington family is always here for you!

BB: As you know, Darlington wanted to take a unique approach to the surveying of its alumni. Can you speak to the strategy behind the way our Alumni Engagement Survey was developed and administered, and what the goals were?
JH: Our overall objective was to capture the voice of the alumni base and surface practical insights that would be useful to the strategy and leadership of the school. To reach this goal, we knew we needed to gather enough responses for the results to be representative, capture feedback across the entire living Darlington alumni base, and structure the survey so we could compare sentiments longitudinally and understand how views may have changed with time. Knowing that conversion rates for unexpected surveys can often be low, you had the great idea of targeting specific cohorts as their reunion date approached. We also included a raffle prize for a few randomly selected respondents to increase interest.
BB: There were 718 responses to the survey over the last five years. Can you talk a little bit about the size of the survey sample and the demographics of the respondents?
JH: Our various marketing tactics led to 718 completed responses over the initial five-year program, resulting in a 99% confidence level and +/-2% margin of error. We saw consistent representation across decades, from the 1960s to the 2020s, with slightly more male and more day student respondents when compared to the overall alumni base. Overall we are happy with the number and balance of responses to give us confidence in the results.
ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT SURVEY
BB: Please share what the survey says regarding alumni satisfaction with Darlington and our Net Promoter Score.
JH: Net Promoter Score is a common market research method that measures satisfaction across industries with a score ranging from -100 to 100. For reference, the health insurance industry averages an NPS of roughly 13 and the hotel industry averages an NPS of roughly 39. From this survey, Darlington’s implied NPS is 49, which places Darlington above the education industry’s average NPS of ~40. Looking at the question in a different way, satisfaction with Darlington stood at 4.2 out of 5, between “Satisfied” and “Very Satisfied.” Either of these measures shows an above-average level of satisfaction with the school, even if different groups of alumni value different aspects of the school and also would suggest different improvements to the school.
BB: What were the key takeaways from the survey?
JH: In addition to the levels of satisfaction mentioned in the previous question, I found the attitude towards Academics and Community very intriguing. Nearly all respondents list Academics as the most valuable aspect of the school; however, those who report strong Community Connections while at the school –through a mentor, athletics, dormitory life, or other activities – are most associated with high satisfaction and high participation in giving. In other words, Academics is important but considered table stakes. A sense of Community is what creates a satisfied alum and the key conduit for this sense of belonging is a strong mentor or faculty relationship while on campus.
Following that thread, levels of satisfaction while at school are tightly correlated with participation in giving – while valuing Academics is not correlated with higher levels of participation.
Along with Academics and Community, a sense of International Exposure is the third key differentiator discovered as core reasons why individuals are satisfied with their Darlington experience.
Key challenges of the school are identified as Affordability, Diversity, and Traditional Values – both respondents who want to uphold those values and those who want to change those values.
In line with the rise of the House System on campus, Dormitory Life rose over recent decades to be nearly as important as Athletics in terms of how people feel connected to the school.
Finally, we were able to pull apart four key personas or cohorts among the respondents, each with specific desires, experiences, and needs. These personas ranged in their level of satisfaction with the school and hopes for the future, which provides a few key areas for further exploration to ensure we are understanding the needs of our full community.
BB: It is good to see that these key takeaways support the strategic direction of the school and conversations we are already having around academic rigor, the sense of community, the importance of faculty relationships, belonging, and engagement. We look forward to sharing more about the Alumni Engagement Survey during Alumni Weekend Oct. 18-20. In the meantime, what would you say to a fellow alum
Head of School Brent Bell interviews developer of Darlington’s 5-Year Alumni Engagement Survey Jeff Hortman (’02, LD ’15), senior vice president of Marketing at Well, a health engagement platform that uses AI to deliver personalized support and improvement pathways. about the importance of participating in this survey?
JH: We often think of giving money or volunteering our time as the main ways to help institutions we care about, but the truth is that something as simple as sharing your perspective can be extremely valuable as well. We’ve decided to keep this survey open for an additional cycle of five reunion years, so please take the time to give back by spending a few minutes sharing your thoughts.
BB: We are so appreciative of your work with us and your willingness to give back to your alma mater by donating your time and expertise in this way. On a personal note, what has been your favorite part of working on this project for Darlington?
JH: The most rewarding part of this survey has been learning about the impact that Darlington has had on decades of people, both while they were students and after they graduated. Reading through the written responses to open-ended questions weaves a vibrant tapestry of mentors and challenges, friendships and characterbuilding moments. Additionally, it was very interesting to see some of the generational shifts in what makes for a desirable educational experience and to know that Darlington’s leadership has successfully shepherded the school’s strategy over time, in alignment with those changing trends.
BB: Please feel free to share your comments on anything else surveyrelated that may be of interest to the readers of Darlington Magazine.
JH: Given the political and social climate of our
society, it is no surprise to anyone that members of our national and global community have different perspectives and opinions on the best path forward. From analyzing the responses to this survey, the Darlington Community is no different. While the alumni base may have different opinions of the choices and challenges that face the school, I found it extremely encouraging and uplifting that a set of core values and desires were consistent across all decades and demographics. It is from a base of these shared values that I believe Darlington will continue to thrive as a positive force within our larger shared community.
BB: Last but not least, what were some of the highlights of your own Darlington experience and how did it prepare you for your future?
JH: My Darlington experience began in kindergarten and was sandwiched between a brother and sister who were also at the school. My dad and his two siblings previously attended Darlington, or Thornwood, and I had two cousins enrolled at the same time I was. This echoes a key sentiment that we heard from the survey which was that the Darlington experience often became an extension of your family experience. Many alums reflect that Darlington did not teach them new values, but rather the school developed and expanded the values and skills that their families had already instilled in them. I would agree with that reflection. I would also agree with the overall sentiment of the survey respondents, which pointed towards on-campus mentors and teachers as the brightest part of their school days. Some of the teachers who had the greatest impact on my time at Darlington included Raymond Murray, who
provided one of my best friends in the form of his son, Alex; Craig Schmidt, who taught me to distill information into thematic narratives; Skip Saunders, who taught me how to structure an argument; David Powell, who expanded my understanding of critical analysis; Glenn Getchell, who instilled the lessons of hard work; and Reba Barnes, who showed me what a “house” community could look like. Then, of course, Sam Moss (’63), who is responsible for introducing me to London, where I now live, and for putting me up for the Morehead-Cain Award at UNC Chapel Hill.
Yes, my Darlington education prepared me to keep up with the rigors of a collegiate education but, more importantly, it encouraged an inner confidence to say “yes” to new experiences and adventures, which leads to a lifelong sense of learning. The wonderful adventures afforded through the Morehead-Cain eventually led to a job in Los Angeles, where I began a career as a failed screenwriter. I then became a marginally more successful management consultant and recently have found an interest in building and growing new businesses. The skills and passions that Darlington helped to develop in me all those years ago are what keep me curious and open for the next adventure.
FACULTY FOCUS
It only makes sense that Darlington would be named for a teacher – after all, they are the heart and soul of our school. And our 150+ faculty and staff members do so much. They are trusted mentors. Mindful motivators. Confidence-boosters. Lifelong learners. Inspired innovators. Creative collaborators. Problem-solvers. Selfless supporters. Servant leaders. Relationship-builders. And dedicated dream-makers.
Ever focused on helping our students discover the very best parts of themselves, our faculty and staff play a pivotal role in preparing the next generation of Darlington graduates for jobs and challenges that don’t even exist yet. In the next few pages, you’ll hear from a few of them – what inspires them, what they love about Darlington, and why they do what they do.
“I love having the ability to make each day a different learning experience for my students and for myself. I believe science teaching should be a student-centered practice, where learning is active, challenging, and relevant to everyday life. My experiences as a student and a lifelong learner guide my teaching, and I always try to offer learning opportunities that I think would engage a younger version of myself. I enjoy seeing students gravitate toward academic and career paths that bring them joy. Whether it’s environmental engineering, ornithology or software development, being even a small part of their journey is very important to me.”
Owen Kinney Head of the Science Department
“I love watching little people learn. Lots of active learning is key to sparking their motivation and interest. It’s fun to see their minds and hearts grow through a school year! It is so rewarding to see my former students as they grow into teenagers, college students and adults. I know social media often gets a bad rap, but I am so thankful that it allows me to peek into the lives of these incredible people. Knowing that I was a tiny part of their journey is so precious and humbling.”
Jody Deaton Kindergarten Teacher
“The thing I most love about working in education is the moment students realize that they are capable of much more than they ever thought possible. My teaching and coaching philosophy is to do my best to instill a great work ethic in all of my students and athletes. I have found that this is possible by showing them that you have a great work ethic as a teacher or coach, and you are willing to live up to the standards you set for them.”
Kevin Hunt
Assistant Athletic Director
“I love that education is an always-moving, always-changing environment. You never get the same day twice, and I have had the opportunity to meet some of the world’s most amazing students. It’s probably the most rewarding profession. Watching our students through the different transitions of grades and life is such a joy. They grow up so fast, and they learn so much about life in a short amount of time. It’s like they come to Darlington as babies and they leave as very promising young adults.”
Terar (Stewart) Everhart (’13, LD ’23) Dean of Students
“I love working in education because I love my subject matter, but more importantly I love to teach kids how to think. As our students’ minds grow and they become more independent, it’s great to see them form their own opinions with the new knowledge they’ve acquired. They gain a better understanding of the world around them and empathy for others. With the Darlington experience, we as teachers get to see them become responsible citizens of the world. Educators are unique because they work with young people in expectation that these students will go on and accomplish great things. We hope for this. We root for this. When they come back with accolades and all the stories about what they have accomplished, we rejoice knowing we were a small part of it.”
Brian Inman Head of the History Department
FACULTY FOCUS
“My most favorite thing about my roles at Darlington can be summed up in one word... opportunity. The opportunity to work with talented, caring people. The opportunity to grow professionally, be a part of great projects, and help the students and the school in positive ways. The opportunity to live where I work and provide my children with the best educational experience. The opportunity to create a life that is meaningful and impactful. I am forever grateful for the opportunities Darlington has given me and my family!”
Randy Smith Head of Summerbell House
“I see myself as a facilitator of learning, guiding students to discover knowledge independently and encouraging them to realize their full potential. My teaching philosophy is rooted in a profound dedication to student growth and development. I place a high value on fostering critical thinking and creativity, believing these skills are crucial for navigating an ever-changing world. Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment is paramount to me; I strive to ensure that every student feels valued and empowered.”
Rebekah Kinney
Assistant Director of Pre-K to 8
“Watching our students grow into amazing young adults has been the joy of my career at Darlington. Seeing them become independent, successful, confident contributors and now having the chance to work with some of them as alumni volunteers has been a real treat! So many have taken Service Beyond Self to heart and are giving back to Darlington and their communities. It’s special to have been part of their journey!”
Vicki Vincent Director of Alumni Relations
“Being a part of and watching the progression of students learning and growing from day to day and year to year is what I love most about working in education. My favorite thing about my job is being a part of a student’s journey and watching them progress through all of the many aspects of their growth from pre-K all the way to senior year or as long as they are at Darlington. In fine arts, watching students progress as visual artists, musicians, actors and storytellers is truly a joy and a privilege.”

“Darlington is a highly collaborative and deeply caring community. I never feel like I am on an island trying to help a student or tackle a project. There are always colleagues to partner with to create the best plan for each individual student when the need arises. I have been here a pretty long time now, 22 years. In that time, Darlington’s students have collectively and individually experienced tremendous joys and devastating losses. I am most energized every day by being able to show up for our students in all of these highs and lows, and help them through to the other side in a way that lets them know how loved they are by the people around them in the Darlington Community. It is hard, hard work sometimes, but it is so rewarding. On a personal level, as I look back over my time here, I can see that simply being present and walking alongside so many students on their Darlington journey has allowed me to lean further into my own strengths over the years. This is the gift that Darlington and her students have given me.”
Tara Inman Dean of Community Life
“I love knowing that we are part of a special place, creating a wonderful and transformative experience for so many young lives. Our community is hands down the most amazing thing about Darlington. You can find a connection to Darlington no matter where you are, and our community embraces and nurtures everyone in it. Being back on campus as an employee has given me such an appreciation for everything our school has to offer - I love seeing how things are better and new, while also the same in deep ways that matter.”
Julia (Douglas) Thomas (’07, LD ’15) Campaign Director
“My favorite thing about my role at Darlington is working with the seniors and helping them navigate the college process with as little stress as possible, which is not easy for them. I try to help them like I am helping my own boys, with patience and compassion. I know that parents get stressed out, too – been there – but I try to make sure they know that, together, along with the college advisors, we can solve whatever issues arise and hopefully put them at ease. Seeing those faces light up at Commencement is a gift!”
Madge (Brown) Crawford (’84) College Guidance Office Administrator
“Unique is the first word that comes to mind to describe Darlington. This place takes hold of you and doesn’t let go. It becomes who we are, not just where we work or go to school. It is a unique mix of students, faculty, and staff from all corners of the globe, and we have the chance to walk alongside each other in a journey that is anywhere from 1-14 years while we are here. But it is more than just that time spent together here on campus – it develops into a lifelong bond of friendship, brotherhood, sisterhood, and family that bleeds purple and white no matter where we live or where we find ourselves in the world.”

Angela Pieroni
Road to Retirement
Navigating the middle school years can be tough for students. They are faced with new academic challenges and changing hormones while trying to juggle issues related to friendships, social pressures, self-confidence, and more. Fortunately, there are educators like recently retired Assistant Director of Pre-K to 8 Angela Pieroni.
“Middle school is truly the age that I connect with,” said Pieroni, who retired in June after 23 years of service to Darlington. “They want to have fun, yet be challenged. They are curious and love it when they realize that they know something they didn’t think they knew. They want to figure out the world they live in. They are so egocentric, yet their sense of right
and wrong, justice and injustice, is being formed. When you can get a student to tap into empathy, their whole viewpoint on the world around them can change. Most importantly, they want to believe in themselves, so you can encourage them that anything is possible for their future.”
Pieroni and her family moved on campus in 2000 when her husband, Joe, was hired to teach math at the Upper School. With a decade of teaching experience already under her belt, she joined the middle grades science faculty and residential duty staff the following year.
“I wanted to work at Darlington because I appreciated the educational freedom,” she said. “It felt like the educators were treated like professionals and were given the support to determine what was best for their students in their classroom.”
Pieroni taught Life Science and Physical Science for 21 years in addition to advisory, activity classes, and a Creative Writing class.
“Teaching is my absolute favorite way to spend my time,” she said. “I love the elusive light-bulb moment for students, when you teach them something and they apply it to a completely new concept. I am also really proud that our middle grades science program has evolved from a lecture-based program to a much more hands-on, exploratory model. I want students to live science and experience science, not read about science as historical facts.”
Additionally during her tenure, Pieroni coached varsity cheerleading and middle grades tennis and volleyball, and served as middle school team leader and then middle school dean before being named assistant director of Pre-K to 8 in 2015. She also served on many committees, including the one that wrote the school’s Mission Statement, and helped spearhead initiatives such as Dot Day, Light the Lake, and the middle grades trips.
The proud mother of alumni Gianna (’17) and Jonathan (’19), Pieroni says she is grateful that her children had the opportunity to grow up at Darlington.
“My children have benefited the most from our Darlington years,” said Pieroni. “I required them to take advantage of the outstanding programs the school offers; in particular, they had to engage in a fine arts program, participate in a sport, and explore a technology program every year. Those three programs helped them be extremely well-rounded when they entered college. Self-advocacy and hard work are two skills that have translated to success in their college years and beyond. They embody the ideal of ‘confident contributor.’”
Pieroni added that she is thankful that Darlington gave her children an international perspective, which was formed, in part, by living in the dorms in their early years.
The recent retiree says she will miss working with students every day, collaborating with colleagues, and engaging with parents.
“Being at Darlington requires you to always be learning, exploring and growing,” she said. “Students challenge you to problem solve and always keep you on your toes. I will miss that. I love that every single Darlington student will have a different life experience, and I love seeing how the gift of education has created their path. To see that a student I taught is now a doctor or a teacher, that they have kids, or that they are living halfway around the world puts me in awe. Knowing these amazing Tigers are changing the world is a blessing.”
Retirement for Pieroni may be a slight change of pace, but as a lifelong learner she looks forward to many new experiences.
“We will be traveling in our RV and visiting our family and friends who live all over,” she said. “There are hiking trails to explore and many craft and garden projects I want to complete. I look forward to volunteering and also plan on taking online classes in areas that interest me. The hardest part about retirement will be deciding how to do everything I want to do!”
Angela Pieroni presents Callie Carlton (’28) with the James Ross McCain Award of Leadership at the 8th Grade MovingUp Ceremony in May.
Edgar Shannon, who served as the fourth president of The University of Virginia, is now the namesake of the institution’s largest and most historic library, The Edgar Shannon Library. Shannon, a Rhodes Scholar and an English professor, was president of UVA from 1959 to 1974, a time that coincided with tumult across the nation’s college campuses, and he is credited with deftly navigating the challenging times. For example, Shannon was a decorated World War II combat veteran and an ardent supporter of the armed forces, but he encouraged students to protest the U.S. military’s invasion of Cambodia in 1970. A month later, he urged students to sign petitions denouncing the National Guard’s shooting of students at Kent State University. His stance against the war in Vietnam prompted calls for his dismissal, but the board declined to fire him. At Final Exercises that year, students, staff and families greeted him with a prolonged standing ovation. Shannon later served on the boards of the U.S. Naval and Air Force academies. In 1967, he recommended admitting women to UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences. The board agreed and tasked Shannon with preparing the University to become coeducational. Two years later, he pushed to increase enrollment of Black students. He oversaw the hiring of the university’s first Black admissions officer and the appointment of Black students as student recruiters. “President Shannon’s accomplishments embody the values that the university aspires to in its striving to be both great and good,” said Michael Suarez, an English professor who headed the committee that recommended the library’s new name. “It was President Edgar Shannon who ushered the university into the second half of that century and whose leadership largely gave our university the character, values, and aspirations by which we understand the University of Virginia and its commitments to excellence today.”

Paving the way for future Tigers
Each year, the Smith Smarties pre-K students engage in a variety of fun, hands-on, multisensory learning activities – such as Camp Smartie, the ABC Fashion Show, and even a class musical written by their teacher called “Oh, Rome, Georgia, You are the Place for Me!” – that create the foundation for their educational journeys at Darlington.
Beth (Bagby) Smith (’87, LD ’12) has been educating our very youngest Tigers for the past 30 years, but her own Darlington Story began even earlier when she enrolled as a seventh-grader. The daughter of alumnus Wright Bagby (’63, LD ’12), she was no stranger to Darlington, having spent time at football games and other athletic events with her family as a child.
“I loved every minute of my time as a student!” said Smith. “Mr. Van Es would have a stickball game every afternoon, he gave nicknames to every student, there were lots of great teachers, and many wonderful friendships were formed. I knew it was such a privilege to be at Darlington. The friendships that I made are still strong today. Teachers and coaches pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraged me, and were beside me each step of the way.”
It’s no surprise that Smith would go on to become a leader among her peers and get involved in many aspects of campus life, including Honor Council, FCA, Darlington Christmas, cheerleading, swimming, and more. Even then, she realized that Darlington was more than just her school; to Smith, it was a way of life.
So when she went off to college at Auburn University, where she would earn her B.S. in Elementary Education and M.Ed. in Learning Disabilities, her goal was always
to return to Darlington one day to teach. This dream came true just two years into her career when she ran into former Darlington faculty member Diane Lumpkin who encouraged her to apply for an open pre-K position. The rest is history.
“I’m very proud to be a part of a great team of teachers and faculty that truly love kids,” said Smith. “I love heralding in new families and helping them to hopefully love Darlington as much as I do! I also love getting to be involved in the life of the school in so many ways. From the Smarties cheering on teams to supporting other teachers in their endeavors, it is a great place. I love watching my former Smarties cross the graduation stage and seeing the great things they do and, more importantly, the amazing people they are becoming.”
During her tenure, Smith has had the opportunity to see each of her three daughters – Bailey (’15), Avery (’17) and Anne Scott (’20) – live out their own unique Darlington experiences and walk across that stage at Commencement.
“Darlington is a special part of our family and there is not a place on this campus that doesn’t hold a memory for us,” said Smith. “When I walk past The Cove, I see my high school self and friends enjoying break on the steps. When I’m at the pool helping with a swim meet, I remember the fun times I had on the swim team and I also think about the fun my girls had as swimmers. Scott and I were married in the chapel, and it’s fun to go look in the wedding book to find our names and our friends’ names. Some things have changed, but the feelings are all the same –love and admiration for a place that shaped me, my brother, my dad, and our girls.”
Looking toward the future, Smith hopes that those who have benefited from their experience at the school will choose to pay it forward in order to help make a Darlington education attainable for more students like her. “We all benefit from those that go before us,” she said. “Someone paved the way for me to have a great education, so I feel that it’s important for me to help those that come after me.”

Kevin Ivester (’87)
A family legacy of love for Darlington
Few people get the opportunity to work alongside one of their parents, but Kevin Ivester (’87) was fortunate enough to spend the first decade of his career teaching with and learning from his mother, retired middle grades English teacher Nancy Ivester.
“My mom was the ultimate professional and approached every day as if it was her duty to give her students everything she had,” he said. “Then-Principal Jim Van Es always said he never had to worry about what Mrs. Ivester was doing because he could guarantee she was teaching nonstop until the last bell rang. I took that as a lesson early on to make sure I utilized every minute in the classroom to the best of my ability, like my mom did.”
His Darlington Story began when he and his brother, Kyle (’87), enrolled as seventh-graders in the fall of 1981, their mother’s first year teaching at the middle school. Over the next six years, the relationships Kevin built and experiences he had –with the soccer team, in particular, during their back-to-back Final Four appearances – would be some of the most memorable and impactful times of his life.
or about something that happened in middle school and we laugh about that. It is an incredible evolution that we witness as teachers, to see a kid go from a middle-schooler to a highschooler, then a college student, and eventually a 20-something adult. I am now teaching the kids of students that I taught in the 90s. Knowing that I played even a tiny role in the process of this evolution is very meaningful.”
Being able to coach soccer and mentor his players – just like Mr. Neville did with him and his teammates – has been a highlight of Ivester’s career, especially the opportunity to coach his daughter, Lily (’25), and son, A.J. (’28).
“In a lot of ways, Darlington shaped my values,” he said. “Other than my dad, I would say Mr. [Gordon] Neville and Mr. Van Es have been the two most influential men in my life. Mr. Neville, my soccer coach, taught me what it meant to be a gentleman and how to treat everyone with respect. Mr. Van Es always spoke about doing the right thing, no matter the situation. Integrity and honesty are the values I learned from Mr. Van Es. If you go through life showing respect to everyone and proving to be an honest person, you will do alright.”
Ivester would go on to earn his B.S. in Science, Technology and Culture from Georgia Tech, where he played four years of soccer. Upon returning to Rome after graduation, he taught summer school at Darlington, which quickly turned into a middle school basketball and soccer coaching gig for the upcoming year, and a fulltime job as a middle grades math teacher starting in 1995.
“One of the things I love most about teaching is when I run into a kid I taught many years ago and see that they have become mature adults,” he said. “Most of the time, in my head I still see them as a sixth-grader, but they have grown into these incredibly well-spoken, intelligent, mature individuals who are contributing to their communities and thriving in life. They always have some funny story they remember from my class
“After coaching here for over 30 years, being able to coach my own kids has been one of the pleasures of my career here,” he said. “To have my son and daughter on my team and go through multiple seasons with them in middle school has been a great experience for us as a family. It will be an honor to coach my son in the varsity program this year and continue to play a role in his evolution as a player.”
For the Ivesters, life seems to have come full circle, and as Ivester looks to Darlington’s future, he’s confident that one thing will never change.
“The impact Darlington has had on my children is similar to the impact it had on me,” he said. “They’ve been able to go to school at a place that seems like home to them because they’ve been around it their whole lives. I was a faculty kid who was always hanging around my mom’s classroom after school, and they are the same. They grew up in my room and around school, and Darlington is just home.
“The same way I had amazing teachers who impacted me, they’ve also had incredible teachers who have impacted them,” he continued. “I’ve been at Darlington since 1981, so in 43 years one thing that has always been consistent is that we have had teachers who are invested in helping kids become better people. The names may change, but the mission doesn’t.”

Mike Hudson (’94, LD ’18)
A lifestyle of leading through learning
If you were to sit in one of Mike Hudson’s (’94, LD ’18) science classes, we guarantee that you’d never get bored – and there’s a reason for that.
“[Retired Darlington history teacher] Craig Schmidt had a very effective method of combining rigor, humor, interesting stories, and a grading scheme that made me feel like my hard work would be rewarded,” said Hudson. “Since I became a teacher, I’ve tried to emulate that. I always learned best when I was in a positive environment and having fun. It can be a real challenge sometimes as a teacher to find a balance between fun and rigorous, but I try. I feel like I can reach the most number of kids with that approach. I have a mantra which is, ‘If I am bored, then I lost the students a long time ago.’”
The Upper School Biology and Zoology teacher attended Darlington from grades 9-12 before earning his B.S. in Biology from Georgia Tech and M.S. in Biology from the University of West Georgia.
“At Darlington, I learned how to learn; I was able to develop my time management habits and how to go about grasping material,” said Hudson. “Teachers shared strategies and insights about how to discern useful information and how to use that information. The habits I picked up at Darlington carried me through the rest of my education and life in general. Tech is tough and thanks to Darlington, I felt very well prepared for it.”
After eight years of teaching in Atlanta and Rome, he joined Darlington’s Upper School science department faculty in 2008 – or, as he says, he returned home.
“I had a number of great teachers throughout my education,” said Hudson. “Time after time, I found
myself thinking that I would like to do what they were doing. I decided to give it a try and it has been a great experience. I get to talk about my favorite topics all the time, and working with bright and hard-working people has been very rewarding. Whether it’s administration, other teachers, or students, being around so much talent and industry just makes everything feel more rewarding and worthwhile.”
During his tenure at Darlington, Hudson has coached a variety of sports, but in recent years, he’s been able to focus his extracurricular efforts solely on working with students to run the DarFarm, a program he created in 2015 thanks, in part, to a Carla & Leonard Wood Distinguished Faculty Fellowship Grant he wrote.
“We work in the greenhouse, with grow lights in my classroom, and behind the Old Gym, where we have outdoor beds, bees, and chickens,” said Hudson. “My mom and dad have had a garden every year since the early 1970s, and I have always enjoyed watching it progress through the season and working in it. They also had a herd of cattle for about 50 years, so I spent a lot of time growing up with plants and animals.
“Years ago, I had students plant some seeds for a science class and
some of the students didn’t know what to do with the seeds. It made me realize that I had an experience growing up that some people aren’t exposed to,” he continued. “The students that work with the DarFarm learn how to start and grow plants and help with the composting of the coffee grounds that we collect from the dining hall and other material that we find. They feed and water the chickens, and collect the eggs they lay. Sometimes we incubate eggs, and they raise the chicks to the point that they move to the big coop. Science teacher Jaclyn Haynes takes the bravest kids and shows them how to care for the bees. Working with students on the DarFarm gives me the biggest sense of accomplishment outside of my regular teaching role.”
As he begins his 17th year at the school, Hudson says Darlington has become more of a lifestyle than a career.
“I am here every day checking on the plants and animals, even over the holidays and summers,” he said. “I use the pool and weight room most mornings, and I probably shower at the Huffman Athletic Center more than at my own home. While there’s always a lot of work to do, I rarely feel like I am ‘at work.’ It’s been really good for me, and Darlington has treated me very well.”

Patrick Collier (’08) Capitalizing on Darlington connections
Patrick Collier’s (’08) journey to becoming an educator began in high school with encouragement from Darlington coaches like Kevin Hunt, Tommy Atha, and Mitch Jordan.
“I decided to get into education at the end of my freshman year of college,” said Collier, who earned his B.S. in General Social Science Education from Auburn University.
“My mother, Perree Collier, was a teacher at Darlington, and I saw how much she loved her job. I had always enjoyed history thanks to some
great teachers in high school and in college, and knew I also wanted to coach football. Having kept in touch with many of my coaches, they made it a very easy decision for me to get into education.”
Collier attended Darlington from grades 3-12 and after a stellar high school athletic career, he was fortunate to play football at the next level.
“Darlington helped prepare me for this by teaching me what it meant to be a student-athlete,” he said. “At Darlington, I learned how to manage my time wisely to make sure I was prepared each day for class and for whatever sport I was in at the time. After Auburn, I moved out to Colorado to work at Rainbow Trout Ranch. Again, the work ethic I learned at Darlington would carry over.”
While out West, he got a call from Atha suggesting he apply for an open middle school history position and the opportunity to coach football and track, sports he had played in high school. He returned to Darlington in the fall of 2014.
“It has been a great experience to teach at the same school I attended,” said Collier. “While there have been many changes since I graduated, such as teachers, leaders and schedules, it has been great to see that the values that were in place while I was a student still stand strong today.
“Darlington is a great place to be a student; you know you are going to be pushed, but you also know that the teacher’s goal is for you to succeed,” he continued. “My teaching philosophy is to help students not only acquire a lifelong passion for learning, but to also make them independent learners. I think this has guided my work because in order for students to have a passion for learning, they need to enjoy it. In my classroom, the students know that we are going to work hard, but there are also moments where we have fun. It also means that you have to meet students where they are, knowing each student is going to learn differently.”
Since returning to his alma mater, Collier has had the opportunity to help reimagine the history curriculum in grades 6-8 and mentor numerous student-athletes through coaching, which has led to many region championships in both football and track as well as this year’s boys’ state track title. He has also been named an FCA Coach of the Year.
Interestingly, Collier’s sister, Elizabeth (Collier) Bruce (’03), and her husband, Justin Bruce, have joined him on the faculty as head of Thornwood House and learning specialist/registrar, respectively.
“Darlington is more than just a job for me in many ways,” Collier said. “Not only did my mom work here, but my sister and her husband also do. Darlington is where most of my and my family’s time is spent. I think what I am most passionate about when it comes to Darlington is the community. The community within the teachers and their drive to serve the students and develop them. The community in athletics and the support you see whether you are at a home game or traveling multiple hours away to play. You also see it with our school’s willingness to serve the surrounding community as a whole.”
For Collier, it’s the community and connections that set Darlington apart, and he has a bit of advice for today’s students.
“Take advantage of everything Darlington has to offer,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for students, and the connections that you make here will last way past your time here at school. Darlington had a profound impact on me in many ways. One of the biggest was the connections that were made. When looking back, the majority of jobs that I’ve had – including my role as a Darlington teacher now – all came from a connection at Darlington.”
Patrick Collier (’08) works with Rosemary Holcombe (’30) in class.

Class Notes
“Throughout my academic journey, U.S. History teacher Ms. Heather Shores has been an unwavering beacon of inspiration and guidance. With her captivating lectures and profound insights, she ignited within me a passion for understanding the complexities of the past. Her dedication to fostering critical thinking and empathy has not only shaped my academic pursuits, but has also profoundly influenced my perspective on the world. I can’t help but feel a lot of sadness knowing that I will no longer have her wisdom and mentorship to rely on after graduating. I will sorely miss Ms. Shores’ impactful presence and the profound impact she has had on my intellectual growth.”

“The teachers I will miss the most are Mrs. Christie Atkins and Mr. Joe Pitts. They have both been incredible role models for me during my time at Darlington. “I will genuinely miss Coach Mark Tunnell so much after graduation. Not only was he the first staff member I met from Darlington, but he was also a basketball coach and mentor to me throughout all four years at Darlington. He has helped me grow in my competitive spirit, while also teaching me when it is best to reign it at times. He’s always open and easy to talk to, and will never make you feel less than. I am definitely going to miss all the laughs I have had with him over these four years.”

“I will miss Mr. Al Shorey. His commitment to the Math Team was truly exceptional. From driving us to various tournaments to consistently showing pride in our efforts, regardless of the results, he exemplified dedication and support. The impact he has had on my mathematical journey and the Math Club is immeasurable.”

“I will miss my head of house, Mrs. Elizabeth Bruce (’03), so much after graduation! She has been such a great second mom figure to me and my Thornwood House girls, especially as boarding students who live away from home. She makes us all feel at home, gives each and every one of us a sense of belonging, and spreads kindness and a love for life any and everywhere she goes. I will forever cherish and miss our duty nights filled with laughter and jokes. She is truly one of the kindest humans I’ve ever met, and I’m so grateful and lucky to have had her as my head of house!”

“I will miss my Chemistry teacher, Ms. Jaclyn Haynes, the most when I graduate because she is a very kind and encouraging teacher. She moved into the dorm last year, so I spent a lot more time with her outside of class, and I really appreciate how easy it is to talk to her and how great of a listener she is. “I will definitely miss Mrs. Alli Clark the most after graduating. She has been my rock since she was my advisor freshman year, and - as our school counselor - has been there with a shoulder to cry on and helpful advice through some really difficult times in high school. I will always think of her as my second mother and reach out to her whenever I need help. Her role in my life has shaped me in more ways that I can express, and I hope to keep in touch in the years to come.”

Leaving a Legacy
Dick Trippeer (’57), Life Trustee
Richard Allen “Dick” Trippeer Jr. (’57), who died Dec. 2, 2023, led a life marked by exceptional leadership and a spirit of adventure, leaving an indelible impact on his community and on Darlington School.
A successful banker, Trippeer retired as chairman of Union Planters Corporation, Memphis, in 1989. He is remembered for his professional accomplishments as well as for his extensive service to community organizations such as the Brooks Museum and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, which were especially dear to his heart.

Over the years, Trippeer maintained a strong connection with Darlington, serving on the Board of Visitors and the Board of Trustees before eventually being named a Life Trustee.
In 1968, Trippeer Hall was constructed on the Darlington campus, initially serving as a dormitory for young men. However, when the school became co-ed in 1973, it was transformed into a residence for girls, providing housing for generations of students until its eventual dismantling in 2003. Awsumb, Former Faculty
Elizabeth “Betsy” Aswumb, who died Dec. 24, 2023, was a legendary lifelong educator who impacted countless lives during the four-plus decades that she and her late husband, George, taught at Darlington. She began her teaching career at Thornwood School, which merged with Darlington in 1973 to create the co-educational institution we know today, and would go on to teach at Shorter College and Darlington, where she established the international student program and spent 20 years as international student director before she and George retired in 2009.
“Betsy was a good friend to me when we arrived in Rome,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “Her care and support for Darlington students is her legacy here. Betsy believed that every student was important and she worked to create an environment where everyone felt they belonged.”
The Awsumbs legacy at Darlington lives on in many ways. Each spring, student artwork is selected for permanent display in The George and Betsy Awsumb Senior Art Collection, and the Awsumb Faculty Award is presented to a teacher who exemplifies a personal commitment to the education and well-being of the superior and average student
Quad remains a permanent nod to the generosity of the Trippeer family.
“As we mourn the loss of Dick Trippeer, we celebrate a life well-lived – a life marked by generosity and a deep commitment to others,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “His legacy at Darlington and beyond serves as a testament to the enduring impact one person can have on the world, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
alike, empowering students with selfconfidence and instilling in them the desire to learn not only while at Darlington, but also for a lifetime. Additionally, Upper School students take classes in the George W. Awsumb Room, which was named in memory of the beloved arts and humanities teacher two years after his passing in 2013.
