Audi Reveals New Entry-Level E-tron 50 Quattro SUV With Less Range While the world was waiting for the e-tron Sportback, Audi just announced an entry-level version of the e-tron. Audi has announced a new, entry-level version of the Audi e-tron model - the Audi e-tron 50 quattro, which will join the existing e-tron 55 quattro.

The e-tron 50 quattro is equipped with a much smaller battery pack of 71 kWh (24 kWh/25% less than the 95 kWh pack in e-tron 55 quattro version) so also the range will be shorter. According to the WLTP test cycle, e-tron 50 quattro will go 186 miles (299 km) or 28% less than e-tron 55 quattro (up to 417 km/259.1 miles). The new versions should benefit from lower weight, but such a big vehicle with less range could be a tricky offer. Also, the dual motor, all-wheel drive powertrain is less capable (230 kW vs 300 kW). So is the charging capability of 120 kW (compared to 150 kW). The main point of the e-tron 50 quattro is to offer "characteristic high efficiency and strong performance at a new price point", but we remain cautious about the demand at least until we see the price. "A product of the carbon-neutral Audi Brussels plant, the e-tron 50 quattro combines a high level of efficiency with strong and instantly accessible performance. Like the versions which came before it, the entry-level model also features ‘e-quattro’ all-wheel-drive delivered by an electric motor mounted on each axle – in this application these generate a combined total of 230 kW and 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) of torque, and are capable of propelling the electric SUV from 0 to 62mph in 7.0 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 118mph. In order to achieve the highest efficiency, only the rear electric motor is active in most driving situations, while the front electric motor is activated predictively when needed. The regulation of the electric all-wheel drive is extremely fast, highly connected and very precise. In combination with modern suspension components including air suspension and the e-tron’s low centre of gravity, it provides excellent dynamics and stability. The battery unit of the Audi e-tron 50 quattro comprises 324 prismatic cells combined in 27 modules. These store up to 71 kWh of energy, which is delivered via a newly calibrated drivetrain and a high voltage system featuring additional optimisations for this application, and facilitate a range of up to 186 miles in the WLTP cycle."

Series production and sales of the entry-level e-tron in Europe should start in the coming months (Q4 2019). In the UK, sales will start in early 2020. We are not yet sure about a possible U.S. launch. Audi e-tron 50 quattro specs: 71 kWh battery pack (324 prismatic cells combined in 27 modules) 186 miles (299 km) of WLTP range 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.0 seconds top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph) all-wheel drive, dual motor system output of 230 kW and 540 Nm DC fast charging capability in 30 minutes (at up to 120 kW) AC charging from 2.3 kW (single-phase) to 11 kW (three-phase) Audi e-tron 55 quattro specs: 95 kWh battery (36 cell modules, each module is equipped with 12 pouch cells, nominal voltage of 396 volts) 204 miles (328 km) of EPA range and up to 417 km (259.1 miles) under WLTP test cycle 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds or 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds Top speed – 124 mph (200 km/h) dual-motor all-wheel drive – up to 300 kW and 664 Nm in S mode (boost) or up to 265 kW and 561 Nm in D mode. Front motor is 135 kW, the rear is 165 kW (S mode). Maximum tow rating – 1,800 kg (4,000 pounds) when properly equipped 9.6 kW on-board charger (240 V, 40 A) in U.S. and 11 kW or 22 kW three-phase in Europe DC fast-charging up to 150 kW: 0-80% in 30 minutes battery pack weight: 700 kilograms (1543.2 lb)

Audi To Cut Over 10% Of Its Staff By 2025: Focus On EVs The German manufacturer intends to cut up to 9,500 jobs and save billions for investment in electrification and digitalization Audi announced yesterday that by 2025 it will reduce its workforce in Germany by up to 9,500, which is some 10.6% of total staff. That should translate into $6 billion ($6.6 billion) of savings by 2029, which will allow investing in new areas like electrification and digitalization, adding up to 2,000 new jobs in those areas. “The 6 billion euros thus generated will secure the strategic targeted return corridor of 9 to 11 percent and will flow into future projects such as electrification and digitalization. In this way, Audi.Zukunft will sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of the Four Rings and will make the company fit for the coming years. n Europe, Audi already produces the e-tron in Belgium, which soon will be joined by the e-tron Sportback. In late 2020, the production of Audi e-tron GT concept will start in Neckarsulm, Germany (where the production capacity of all models is scheduled for 225,000 annually). The Ingolstadt plant in Germany (total capacity of 450,000 annually) is also poised to produce EVs: “The Ingolstadt site is currently preparing for the production of premium electric vehicles. In Neckarsulm, the all-electric Audi e-tron GT will already drive off the assembly line as of 2020. The other production lines will also be gradually equipped for electric mobility.” Rolf Klotz, Chairman of the Neckarsulm Works Council: “We see it as the management’s duty to keep their promises. With long-term electrification, Audi. Zukunft is now creating facts. We are thus securing the future viability of the Neckarsulm plant.” An “Electrification Neckarsulm” fund is being set up specifically for this purpose. By 2025, a total of 300 million euros will flow into this fund to secure the necessary construction measures for the production of electric vehicles in Neckarsulm. Source: Audi, Reuters

2020 Audi RS Q8 Sleeps With The Fishes In The Netherlands The owner took delivery just a few weeks ago. The fastest production SUV at the Nürburgring had an unfortunate encounter with water due to unknown reasons – as shown in the adjacent images provided to Motor1.com by Remco F. Gerritsen. It would be easy to simply put the blame on the driver for what happened, but there’s very little info available at the moment of writing about the circumstances that led to this accident. We do know it took place in The Netherlands, specifically in Reeuwijk, and that the driver managed to get out safe and sound. That’s what matters the most at the end of the day. Running the vehicle’s license plate through RDW – the Netherlands Vehicle Authority – reveals the Audi RS Q8 was registered on January 4, so the owner enjoyed the speedy SUV for only about three weeks before testing its submarine qualities. It’s too soon to say whether the vehicle will ever return to the road, but water and electronics don’t exactly mix. Audi’s equivalent of the Lamborghini Urus carries a starting price of just under €200,000 in The Netherlands, but reports say this one had an eye-watering €248,901 sticker with options and after taxes or about twice as much as the base RS Q8 in Germany (€127,000). Converted to U.S. dollars, that’s a staggering $274,500 at current exchange rates. It looks like this particular example had the optional 23-inch wheels, which Audi says are the largest they’ll install on a car since putting larger alloys “makes no sense.” It’s the fastest and most powerful SUV to carry the Four Rings, topping out at 189.5 mph (305 km/h) thanks to a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 rated at 592 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). It lapped the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 42.2 seconds and was filmed earlier this month while on the Autobahn in Germany casually cruising at its electronically capped top speed.
