DARONGKLOD SOMTON Portfolio You are cordially invited to Darongklod Somton’s portfolio which includes my most essential works and various skills thoughout my experiences. This portfolio contains assingments during my bachelor studies in the university, professional work and my free works. Each work possesses descriptions with photography, 3D renderings and hand sketches and explanations as well.

I graduated from the Department of Industrial Design, King Mongkut’s Institute Technology of Ladkrabang. During the 5 years of the course, I was taught various aspects of art and design from art history and art theories to actual process design and production. My programme covered many branches of design materials from furniture design, metal work, ceramic, textile design and graphic design. During my last year I wrote my final project (thesis) on furniture design which has always been my interest. For the project, I did not only design furniture for its appearances, I looked in to the relationship between culture and furniture design, trying to improve the livelihood of the community with design. I also learned to identify problems and use design as a solution for overlooked problematic areas such as public furniture of large-scale design like urban planning and lighting design. I started my first proper job at Do.Did.Done Co, Ltd in Bangkok. It specialised in event and exhibition design. As the company’s designer and later a creative, I was involved in many projects for renowned companies such as Paul Smith, Pleat Please by Issey Miyake, Heineken Royal Trophy, Chanel, etc. I was involved in each project from creating the concept to the production process which has furthered my experiences in design even more.

In 2009, I started a clothing and accessories brand with my close friend who is also a designer. Our brand, ‘Nordinary Order’ relies on of the simplest design; using basic geometric shapes such as a triangle, a rectangular and a circle. Our brand receives considerable amount of recognition in street fashion.

Assingment 2007

Seating Device MultiPurpose

“Whatever surfaces are, just put it and sit it on

The four roll legs chair was designed for place on hard grounds like concrete but is able to stick on soft ground as well. In practice the chair is capable to lean on surfaces like flat walls or even round areas such as big trees because of the curved back rest. This seating device uses solid materials like stanless steel, therefore it is strong enough for any climatic condition since it can be set permanently outdoors.

My design is composed of printed numbers including arrows and dashed lines on the plain napkin as guidelines. The user can just fold it in order of the numbers following the arrows and dashed lines. Now one can relish folding the napkins and also is able to enjoy this product with the family during the preparation of a meal.

Pattaya beach design & develop environment project : Thesis 2007

My final project on furniture design in university which has always been my interest. For the project, I did not only design furniture for it’s appearances, I looked in to the relationship between culture and furniture design, trying to improve the livelihood of the community with design. I used the city of Pattaya as my case study.

I learned from this project the effect of human actions on the surroundings. I also learned to identify problems and use design as a solution for overlooked problematic areas such as public furniture of large-scale design like urban planning and lighting design.

: Side walk along the beach at night

: Final design prototype

I used the city of Pattaya as my case study; Pattaya is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. The beach here used to be a beautiful public area where numerous tourists came to relax. However, nowadays the beach and the public furniture were wrongly used some use for set a stall to sell food others use a place that out of sight or hiding corner as place for making sexual relation and turn to den of thieves.

Stamped Objects Exhibition from unknown fans to

For over 15 years I have been receiving these crazy things from an unknown fan – Male? Female? It’s really amazing. It seems to me to be more artistic than a lot of so called art which is revered around the world. Objects such as a ski, a football, a chair, a surfboard, etc etc etc.

“having arrived through the post but NEVER in a box” – always with the address and stamps on the actual article. I find it fascinating and intriguing but really don’t want to know who the sender is. Recently a TV channel wanted to do a show about it but I said no as the mystery is much more interesting!

Heineken Royal Trophy 2010 The Heineken Royal Trophy was the biggest scale I had ever designed. With its 4800 sqm. the space was created for various activities. Firstly, I needed to analyse each of the activities and circulation before matching those on the right position. Later on, I also needed to consider the sunlight and wind direction that must not bother guests.

The Royal Trophy is a men's professional team golf tournament which was played for the first time in January 2006 at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi, Thailand. The competing teams represent Europe and Asia. Eight man teams play a series of 16 matches for the right to hold a trophy donated by the King of Thailand. Thereafter to stage it in Europe and Asia in alternate years.

The donate box is degigned from oriented stand board (OSB), using in the event for collecting toys and gifts to pass to children.

Top Thai celebrities who came to join the event also brought toyS and gifts to help support the Mercy Center Foundation.

Children from the Mercy Center also took this opportunity to thank their kind supporters by coloring Christmas cards to show their appreciation.

NOKIA 5800 XpressMusic Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone was officially launched with a concert from the most popular Thai astist at Central World Bangkok Thaialnd.

My concept about Nokia Express Music its about using new features from the Nokia’s newest touch screen device like High Quality Games, Music Share, Nokia Ovi Map etc. Therefore, I designed a concept called “Real Sense”. I made every feature as a real one so you can see, touch and hear. I designed a racing track in the middle of space using Mini cooper as a car toy. According to the sense of seeing and hearing, the main stage shows live concerts from popular Thai artists. During each song which the artist is playing you can download that song into your Nokia device for free.

Heineken Music Exhibition and Mini Concert Music lovers are invited to register as members of Greenspace Music Exhibition, the latest social networking community of trendy people who are in tune with everything fashionable.

The main inspiration behind this event is to create a space for people who love and enjoy music in order to be connected with each other. Two main parts of the event can be seen in the stage and music history exhibition. Both is accompanied by gimmicks of music instruments and models of world musicians during the whole the event.

Kiehl’s shop at Central Bangna Thailand This project was conducted as a co-operation with Interior Designers of Kiehl’s. In here, the suitable props needed to be firstly selected, then fitted in the proper positions.

This retail environment has been designed to convey the depth and heritage of the global KiehlĂs brand and facilitate an authentic retail experience that respects the community values, self-image and aspirations of each region where the stores are located. Creativity and expression is promoted with sculpturally inspired fixturing, natural materials, the installation of interactive elements that encourage community participation. The design of the environment is conceived around an aspirational attitude and community; not a particular age group.

Own Business 2008-Recently

Nordinary order

Clothing Line NORDINARY ORDER//// was founded in 2008 by Darongklod and Nattada both are classmates who studied in KMITL and became partnership to run the business together. The first product of our shop was t-shirt that we thought easy to start the business and related to our knowledge of art. It could communicate simply and directly to the meaning of graphics on our t-shirts to our customers. We have chosen dots, lines, plane, and fundamental forms because they are the most necessary and very important in the design. We also thought it could be a good solution to design our products.
