Swim Safe: Teaching children water safety skills Children in St Ives will be able to learn vital water safety skills for free during the school holidays. The fun, hour-long sessions are being held by Swim Safe on Mondays and Tuesdays from 22nd July to 27th August, at the Surf House on The Island. The youngsters will learn how to swim safely outdoors and what to do if they, or someone else, get into difficulty in the water. Swim Safe is a partnership between Swim England and the RNLI, who are working with the Surf House to offer the free sessions. To take part, children must be aged seven to 14 and be able to swim at least 25 metres unaided.

outdoors, but it’s very different to swimming in a pool, where most children learn to swim. It’s essential children learn about open water safety – where it is safe to swim, how to stay safe, and what to do if they get into difficulty in the water. “We want all children to have access to this training, so all Swim Safe lessons are funded by the RNLI and Swim England partnership and so are completely free of charge.”

Charlotte Francis, Swim Safe co-ordinator for the South West, said: “Children love swimming

St Ives Scouts: Could you lend them a hand? The 1st St Ives Scout group is appealing for volunteers to help lead its sections. The group, which is the oldest in Cornwall, has been operating since 1910. It meets at Ayr Field, where its Scout Hut was renovated last summer. All sections are open to boys and girls. Beavers is for children aged five and three-quarters to eight years; Cubs is for children aged seven and a half to 11 years; and Scouts is for children aged ten and a half to 14 years. Leaders plan the programme and run the weekly term-time meetings, plus indoor and outdoor activities, like camps, crafts, badge work, cooking, games and visits. Group Scout leader, Jo Bassett, said: “We are looking for volunteers to help run the existing Cub section and to help me launch a Sea Scout section. You’ll meet new people, develop new skills, and have lots of fun. No previous experience is necessary, and there is plenty of support on hand,

plus a full programme of training. “I would urge anyone, male or female, who is over 18 years of age and might be interested, to come along to one of our Cub sessions, without obligation, to see how you find it. Our young people find it hugely rewarding and enjoyable.” The group offers a wide range of adventures and challenges to local children, and new members are always welcome. Currently, Beavers meet on a Wednesday at 6.30pm, and Cubs on a Tuesday at 6.30pm. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, Sea Scouts will be added to this list! St. Ives Archive: Fishermen’s Lodges As we all know, St Ives Harbour is tidal – so the fishermen of old had to spend a lot of time waiting for the tide to come in before they could set sail. To avoid them having to spend hours waiting, possibly in the cold or rain, shelters – known as ‘lodges’ –were built along the Wharf and out to Smeaton’s Pier. Originally there were five Fishermen’s Lodges. Dominoes and cards were played to while away the hours, but never for money. I understand that swearing was strictly forbidden in the shelters – and I believe there is still a swear box in the Shore Shelter Lodge! In 1931, One and All Lodge, which was situated in front of the Fishermen’s Co-op (the white building in the centre of this photograph), was undermined by an abnormally high tide and heavy ground sea. It eventually collapsed and was abandoned. Bayview Lodge was at the back of the breakwater until approximately 1970, when it was badly damaged by a storm and left to fall into ruin. Shamrock Lodge is a tiny hut on one side of the slipway, in front of the Sloop, and Shore Lodge is above the slipway. The walls of all three lodges are covered with wonderful photographs of the old way of life in St Ives. Happily, permission was given by the current lodge members for all these photographs to be copied. The copies are kept safely here in the Archive, and you are welcome to call in and view them.

Rose Lodge was originally situated at the bottom of Court Cocking. Before the First World War, Wharf Road didn’t exist. The beach came right up to where the shops are now, and the boats were drawn up almost to the top of the beach. In 1917, due to the proposed construction of the roadway along the Wharf, it became necessary for Rose Lodge to be moved next to Shore Lodge. Sir Edward Hain, a great benefactor to the town, provided the money for this, and bequeathed £300 for the future upkeep of all the lodges. In 1996, St Ives Town Council still owned the land on which the lodges were built and charged a ground rent of 5p a year! No women were allowed in the lodges, but flags were flown when any of their daughters got married. A tradition still adhered to is that death notices of local people are displayed on the outside of Shore Shelter Lodge. One piece of fascinating information found in the Archive files is that the floors of the shelters were at one time covered with sand rather than carpet or sawdust, and the sand was brought over from Porthmeor Beach, as Porthmeor sand was considered better quality than the harbour sand. Looking at this photograph of the fish laid out for sale in the harbour, I can quite understand why! Janet Harris

St Ives Archive’s Research Centre is based at Wesley Methodist Church, St Ives Road, Carbis Bay, St Ives, TR26 2SF. It is open on Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am to 2pm. For more information, phone 01736 796408, email admin@stivesarchive.org, or visit www.stivesarchive.org. The Archive opened in 1996 and is staffed by volunteers. We are always looking for people to join our enthusiastic team – there are opportunities to learn new skills, carry out research, assist visitors and take part in fundraising events. We offer a valuable service for anyone wishing to obtain historic information about the town, free of charge. The Archive holds over 20,000 photographs and numerous documents covering fascinating subjects such as art, maritime heritage, tourism and traditional customs, and we also have extensive resources relating to the history of St Ives families. St Ives Farmers’ Market: A chat with Catherine Navin of Cath’s Cornish Kitchen I was born in Worthing, and my family later moved to St Ives and then St Erth. I’ve livedaway from Cornwall, but was drawn back to bring up my children. I was running the cafe at St Erth Farmers’ Market when their baker left. My father bakes for the market, and so thinking “How hard can it be?”, I decided to give it a go. I’d never baked a quiche in my life, although I had made pastry with some success. I consulted books, blogs, and websites, putting off the actual moment I picked up a bag of flour. Let’s just say those first quiches were definitely not my best work! But they got a great response. Since then, I’ve developed my baking and adapted what I found to be best practice from different sources. It’s about getting the pastry just to the right texture, so you get a crisp contrast to the filling – avoiding the dreaded ‘soggy bottom’. I love experimenting with flavours and I’m always looking out for the best local ingredients. I also enjoy going

further afield for inspiration. I was looking for something savoury and unusual to bake at Easter, and came across something traditionally served in Northern Italy called Torta Pasqualina. Whole eggs are baked in a pie, like a gala pie, but vegetarian. It’s a real showstopper – so popular that I bake it in summer, too. This is my second year at St Ives. It’s a great market, with a real community feel and a good mix of locals and visitors. Part of the appeal is the buskers who play there. Once, Rick Chappell, a singer/guitarist from Doncaster, and Ian Flindall, from Chypraze Farm in Morvah, who plays percussion, asked me to do backing vocals. Before we knew what we were doing, we started rehearsing, and the market band North by Southwest was born! Cath’s Cornish Kitchen is at St Ives Farmers’ Market on Thursdays and St Erth on Saturdays. For details of other markets and events, find CathsCornishKitchen on Facebook, or e-mail cathscornishkitchen@gmail.com

The Harbour Master’s Secret Born in St Ives in 1945, Eric Ward joined the fleets of fishermen striking out from West Cornwall’s coast fresh out of school. He became St Ives’ Harbour Master in 1985 and Coxswain of the lifeboat in 1989; retiring in 2000 after 34 years at sea. It was during long periods offshore that Eric returned to drawing. “It had been 20 years. Living on a boat with four blokes, there’s not much else to do.” Back in St Ives in 1985, a friend urged Eric to join a life class at St Ives School of Painting. He admits being apprehensive: “I thought everyone would be brilliant and I’d be awful. But the tutors were fantastic; the ambience in the room is great because everyone’s in the same boat!” Puns aside, Eric’s intimate knowledge of St Ives soon saw him producing lively vignettes capturing its dual heritage of art and marine industry.

Portscatho, and they are soon to be shown at the Belgrave, St Ives. Eric’s story bears testimony to significant neurological evidence that imagination and creativity continue to flourish as we get older, and that spending an hour or two making art can have a dramatic effect on cognition at any age. In short: it’s never too late to become an artist. Whether you’re picking up after a long break, like Eric, or trying something completely new, art is the ultimate way to relax and recharge. “Just do it,” says Eric, “Just turn up, go in and have a good time.” Why not drop into one of St Ives School of Painting’s workshops? A full list can be found at schoolofpainting.co.uk/workshops and with over 80 to choose from, they’re showing you that art really is for everyone.

By 1989 he had a solo show in a London gallery. He still lives and paints in St Ives; a regular at St Ives School of Painting’s life drawing classes, he has even gone on to teach there. “I don’t see it as a reinvention,” he says, “more as a progression.” Eric’s work, often featuring his beloved harbour and the School’s unmistakable studios, has appeared in shows as far afield as Japan and more recently alongside Whistler and Sickert at the Falmouth Art Gallery. You can currently find his paintings at the New Gallery,

Preview: St Ives September Festival 2019 St Ives has long been a Mecca for artists and art lovers, and the 2019 September Festival will continue the tradition, with a kaleidoscope of exhibitions, events and opportunities to participate. Viewing the work of experts, learning from them, or simply buying something, the 15-day festival offers music and arts enthusiasts myriad opportunities to get involved, between 14th and 28th September. More than 300 events, including headline music nights at The Guildhall, jazz at The Western, a five-night musicals film season, theatre, daily open-air lunchtime poetry, and music sessions in Norway Square, plus numerous talks and guided walks, will once again extend the St Ives summer season deep into September.

A more recent but hugely popular ‘tradition’ is Spot The Artist, which sees bargain-seekers queue overnight in Back Road West for first pick of the work – signed on the back – donated by more than 50 artists from near and far. Viewing days for the St Ives Rotary Club charity fixed-price sale, at Porthmeor Studios, are Friday and Saturday, 20th and 21st September, with the Sunday morning sale on 22nd September.

Follow in the footsteps of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, and so many more famous arts names. Explore the 130-year-old tradition of Open Studios, which has spread across the world since the first one recorded in St Ives in 1889, when artists sending their work for display at the Royal Academy in London staged an open day to show their work in the town. It continues this year with around 50 artists displaying their work across more than 20 locations. Venues range from one-person garden studios to the larger Back Road Artworks and the Gaolyard Studios, with several artists participating. Savannah Overy, the festival’s Open Studios co-ordinator, said: “It is a wonderful opportunity to see what is happening on the visual arts front here in St Ives.”

16

On nearby Porthmeor Beach, ceramic artist – and festival chair – Mary Kaun English will, for the ninth successive year, dig a temporary kiln for her pit-fired pottery demonstration. Mary and Martyn Perryman will prepare the pit, fire their work, and explain their alternative ceramic methods opposite Tate St Ives from 3pm on Sunday 22nd before unearthing their creations the following morning.

Take stock – and then start planting: Expert advice from Trevena Cross Nurseries August is the month to take stock and enjoy the garden, soaking up the late summer rays and relaxing with a glass of something chilled in hand while BBQ smells from the neighbourhood fill the air. Vibrant summer colour should still be spilling from pots, troughs, baskets and borders, courtesy of bedding and patio plants, as well as summer flowering perennials and shrubs. You can still be productive though. Now is the time to think ahead to next spring’s wish list. Spring flowering bulbs hit the shelves around August bank holiday, when all important decisions regarding next year’s magnificent daffodil display or tulip show must be made if you want first pick of the entire range. Cornish spring flowering narcissi bulbs are also usually in the mix and available by the bucket-load, for fabulous drifts of Cornish colour next spring! As we transition into September, excitement builds for the best planting time of the year, the autumn. It’s the time when ‘perfect planting conditions’ are usually met – autumn showers moistening the still warm summer soil and giving the root system of plants time to establish before a dormant winter and spring revival next year. As well as spring-flowering bulbs and onion and garlic sets, fabulous packs of home grown bedding in the form of pansies, violas and cyclamen, ornamental trees, fruit trees, soft

24

B s fruit bushes, and robust hedging plants are all excellent additions to the garden at this time of year, when you have the flexibility to plant just about anything in the ground – as well as the usual year-round option of a pot. The reason autumn is often considered planting time for the ‘true gardener’ is that it’s a time to recognise the ‘greater good’ of actions taken now, especially when it comes to long-term plantings. At this time of the year there may not be a lot going on above the ground to provide instant gratification, but this only accelerates what goes on beneath the ground. With little top growth to support, the plant can focus all its attention on rapidly developing a complex root network. In many cases, it will be setting the plant up for life, a life that quite often will far exceed the life of the person who planted it! With little maintenance required through winter, autumn plantings emerge robust specimens, ready to face the main growing season in spring, when it will finally be the plant’s time to shine above the ground! If you would like any advice about autumn planting, contact a knowledgeable grower like Trevena Cross. They are always on hand to help, and will be sharing handy tips on autumn planting and related information on their Facebook page as the season progresses. Garden Stories: Allotments

On hot summer days in St Ives, allotment-holders relish the opportunity to escape from the crowds to spend some time in their plots perched high above the town. Whether they go to work on the land, or relax in the sun and enjoy the panoramic views of St Ives Bay, there’s nowhere better to be at this time of year. It is almost 10 years ago now that St Ives Town Council entered into a lease with St Ives Allotment Association for the use of four acres of former arable farmland at Trowan, part of the West Penwith Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Four enthusiastic would-be allotmenteers then created 56 plots of 10m by 12m with rope and wooden pegs and dug a borehole from which water was pumped into a tank into which people could dip their watering cans. Although Trowan is slightly off the beaten track, it can be reached on foot, by car or by bicycle, and the site is only a short walk from a bus stop. The southern side of the site is sheltered by Rosewall Hill, whereas windbreaks are often necessary in the more exposed plots nearer the sea. But the Trowan soil is very fertile, and almost anything can be grown there: rhubarb and raspberries, purple sprouting broccoli and perpetual spinach, courgettes and cut flowers. One man once grew a 50ft cabbage, and two of his fellow allotmenteers had to help him dig it out of the ground. He then put it on a trailer and drove it to Malvern Horticultural Show, where it

26

came third in its class – a good result in a national event. If you’re interested in attempting to emulate this feat, or simply wish to grow some delicious fruit and vegetables for family meals while enjoying some exercise in the fresh air, contact St Ives Town Council to put your name on the waiting list for an allotment. Full-size plots cost £60 per year, and half-size plots are £35. For more information, call 01736 797840 or visit https://stivestown council-cornwall.gov.uk/apply-for-an-allotment/ As the council says: “Allotment sites help to encourage a sense of community and help maintain the local environment. With plots able to be worked by friends and family, they’re a great chance to share learning and to get children involved in finding out where their food comes from. Our existing allotmenteers are a friendly bunch – new plot holders have been pleased with the advice and help they get from neighbouring allotment gardeners.” Comments from allotment holders: “It can take you three-quarters of an hour to get to your plot from your car because you stop and chat. People are always giving you produce from their plots. That’s rather nice.” “The good thing about Cornwall is that if you poke a stick in the ground, it will grow. And where else could you get a view like this?” “It’s good exercise, especially in the winter, when you have to do the digging. And it’s a joy to be up here on a sunny day.” Trowan allotmenteer Steve McIntosh is writing a blog, A Year on the Allotment. Follow him at https://www. facebook.com/allotmentwithaseaview/

Plastic Free St Ives: Be a plastic free visitor this summer by Emma Fashokun, manager of The Coffee Lounge

We know how much tourists love St Ives, and we hope that our visitors join in with the huge amount of support that we’ve had from locals to work towards a plastic-free St Ives. We understand it can be difficult to navigate all of the information so we’ve put together some easy tips to avoid single use plastics while on holiday. Bring or buy a reusable water bottle rather than purchasing single-use plastic bottles of water. If you download the Refill app you’ll find lots of friendly cafes, hostels and other places in St Ives and surrounding areas that will gladly fill your bottle for free. Getting into the habit of carrying a water bottle, rather than buying one, makes economic sense in the long run. Imagine how much money a family of four could save over a one week holiday! Avoid purchasing the polystyrene bodyboards: they are not recyclable and easily damaged, leaving micro plastics in our ocean. Thousands of these abandoned boards wash up on our coastlines every year. Buy wooden boards or rent a board for the day – still just as much fun for everyone, but plastic free!

trace, when you are visiting the beach or local attractions. This means not disturbing the environment or leaving any litter or marks that you have been there.

Refuse plastic bags, bring your own, or support our local businesses by buying a reusable tote or shopping bag.

Set the kids a challenge of picking up three pieces of plastic everytime you leave the beach.

Look out for our Plastic Free Champion plaques in businesses around St Ives: you can be sure they are actively working to reduce single use plastics in our community. They will be using plastic free disposables for your takeaway packaging, and offering incentives such as a discount on your takeaway coffee if you bring your own cup. Follow our Plastic Free St Ives page on Facebook to find out more.

Enjoy our beautiful town and help us preserve it for generations to come. Take only photographs and great memories with you. Useful links: https://www.facebook.com/plasticfreestives/ https://refill.org.uk/ https://www.sas.org.uk/plastic-freecommunities/

Book Review

by Alice Harandon, manager of St. Ives Bookseller

The Testaments – Maragret Atwood Vintage £20.00 pub 10/09/19 ‘And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light ...’ When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. “Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.” Margaret Atwood The Second Sleep – Robert Harris Hutchinson £20.00 pub 05/09/19 In 1468 a young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artefacts – coins, fragments of glass, human bones – which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? As Fairfax is drawn more deeply into the isolated community, everything he

30

believes – about himself, his faith and the history of his world – is tested to destruction. The Mermaid’s Christmas Adventure – Michael Foreman Mabecron Books £12.99 After an unexpected meeting in the summer with an unseasonal holidaymaker, Morvoren of Seal Island takes to the skies to lend Father Christmas a hand. Yes, it may seem a little early, but it’s always a good idea to put something away for Christmas Eve! Shell Life on the Seashore – Philip Street Faber & Faber £9.99 For many, the highlights of visits to the seaside include rockpooling and gathering the glorious array of shells left strewn on the beach after the receding tide. Attracted by the infinite variety of shapes and colours, visitors can never resist making a souvenir collection of their own – but little do they suspect the fascinating lives of the animals who once occupied them. What if each shell had a story of its own to tell us, if only we knew the language? Mr Street’s delightful, informative guide for all the family uncovers the secret history of each common shell, revealing not only which marine creature once inhabited it, but the unique challenges of its watery habitat it had to solve.

Travel: Dubrovnik by travel counsellor Jo Fisher

This breathtakingly beautiful walled city is on the southern coast of Croatia, fronting the Adriatic Sea, and is well-known as the location of the TV series Game of Thrones. Whilst this has clearly increased travellers’ interest, Dubrovnik, a Unesco World Heritage Site, has not been spoilt by tourism. The most popular attraction is the stunning Old Town. The streets are white marble, there is Renaissance sculpture and architecture everywhere, and a magnificent circle of city walls. You can take a walk around the walls or ride the cable car to the top of the Srd Hill for panoramic views of the city and nearby islands. Dubrovnik has museums, theatres, art exhibitions and music festivals, and it’s also a popular place to get married: sometimes you will see a bride and groom happily wandering through the streets, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. The sea is clear, allowing for excellent snorkelling. Another popular activity is sea kayaking: a half-day kayak tour will take you south along the city walls to a small cave beach and the Island of Lokrum, where you can visit the monastery ruins featured in Game of Thrones. Alternatively, you can take the ferry – Lokrum is one of many islands which are just a short boat ride away from the city. If you want to be close to the city but with good access to beaches and restaurants, stay in Lapad, a green suburb about 10 minutes’ drive from the Old Town. There are hotels, apartments and guest houses there, but because it’s a residential area, you don’t feel you’re in a touristy location:

32

bars, cafes, restaurants and shops are used by locals and visitors alike. You can walk everywhere in Lapad, from the beach to a restaurant to your hotel. There is a long stretch of pebbly beach, so no matter where you stay, you’ll be close to the sea. After spending a few days exploring the city, why not head up the coast and rent a villa? The road hugs the coastline all the way, making for a beautiful scenic drive. Just north of Dubrovnik is Slano, a small harbour village, and further on, a little town named Ston, known for three things: well-preserved town walls, salt works, and mussels. You can rent a car, and there is also a bus service from Dubrovnik. Be sure to pay a visit to Konoba Bakus, a little restaurant recommended to us by the locals, who travel from Dubrovnik to eat there: reasonably priced and lovely local cuisine. The city becomes very crowded in the peak months of July and August, and it’s also very hot. To avoid the crowds, the best months to travel are April to mid-June and September and October. Dubrovnik is a fantastic destination for single travellers, couples and families. Our children loved it, and we felt safe and welcome. It should be on everyone’s list of ‘must see’ places.

J C Landscapes Landscape gardener Jason Challingsworth aims to care for every garden as though it is his own. His company, J C Landscapes, creates and maintains gardens for a wide range of clients, from hoteliers and holiday home owners, to busy professionals who have no time for pruning and deadheading and elderly people who love their gardens but are no longer able to look after them. Jason worked in landscaping for many years before setting up his own company in the Midlands, and then re-establishing it in St Ives after he moved to the town in 2013. Jason’s approach is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with an emphasis on reusing and recycling. If a client wishes to have a flower bed removed, Jason will always try and find a new home for the plants, whether elsewhere in the garden or in a completely different location, rather than dump them in a skip. When he removed three truckloads of agapanthus plants from one garden and replanted them in another, it reduced waste for the first customer, cut plant costs for the second customer,

saved the lives of the plants – and so was very good for the environment. Jason is also committed to being as plastic-free as possible: he uses tools with wooden handles and avoids bin liners by making use of on-site composting facilities wherever possible. Any plant material which can’t be reused or composted is taken to a registered disposal site. He also makes good use of modern landscaping solutions, such as composite decking, which offers an eco-friendly alternative to wood and looks good all year round. Jason has built up his business by providing a reliable and friendly service. He will always put in that little bit of extra effort to help everyone to enjoy their garden, no matter how large or small. Recipe: An easy quiche Real men, they say, don’t eat quiche. Tell that to a lot of the fellas I know and they’ll see you round the back for a talking to. It’s a myth. Everybody loves a good quiche, don’t they?

until I have a breadcrumb consistency. I then add one large egg (or two small ones), mix, and pat into a disc, which needs to be refrigerated for at least half an hour.

My introduction was my mother’s version, but unfortunately the recipe went with her when she died. Then my interest in making my own was ignited by trying a local baker’s version (Philp’s, since you ask – still my favourite commercially made quiche), I experimented with several recipes, with various combinations of whole eggs, or just yolks, and different levels of milk and cream, before settling on this one. It really is pretty easy and very satisfying – give it a try.

Using baking beans and a 9 inch wide, 1½ inches deep pie dish, blind bake the pastry for ten minutes with the beans, then ten minutes without. Make sure you use the tip of a knife to put holes in the uncooked base, to stop the pastry rising. While the pastry’s cooking, chop the onion as fine as you can and sweat it down in a little oil.

Method Set the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. I sometimes use ready-made shortcrust pastry, because I’m a busy man and I think it’s perfectly suitable. I do, however, give it a roll to make it a little thinner, as I don’t like the quiche crust to be too thick. To make my own pastry, however, I rub 170g of cold, diced butter together with 340g of flour,

Ingredients Shortcrust pastry (enough to line a 9 inch pie dish) 1 medium sized onion 150-200g bacon (or peppers, perhaps, for a vegetarian quiche. In fact, why not try asparagus, in season, or salmon?), chopped up into small pieces.

Beat the eggs in a bowl or large jug, and add the bacon, onion, milk, cream, cheese and pepper, as well as a little other seasoning where appropriate. I find a little dried basil is nice in a pepper quiche, or dill with salmon. Cook for 45 minutes and serve warm or cold, with buttered new potatoes or a side salad. Darren Norbury

4 eggs 80ml milk 80ml single cream 100g cheese Black pepper (I tend not to use salt in the bacon version because of the salt in the meat and cheese) Tomato (optional, sliced, to decorate on top)

Helen’s Befriending Service Providing respite for carers and companionship and support for the lonely and isolated Prop Helen Veale RGN/BSc

Tel: 01736 756273 Mob: 0775 9326737 Email: helenveale@live.co.uk

Helen’s Befriending Service I offer respite for carers who need a break for themselves. This allows them to have some “me” time, socialise with family and friends and attend appointments. I also provide companionship, support and a listening ear to those who feel lonely and isolated. Restricted mobility and being unable to drive often leaves people cut off, and a visit from a befriender can lift someone’s mood, give them something to look forward to, and make life meaningful again. I visit people in their own homes and sit and chat about everyday things, interests, memories and what matters to each individual. Listening to the client is also an important part of that time. It does not involve any form of care, eg washing, dressing, dispensing of medication, meal preparation or transport. The service covers Penzance, Camborne, Helston and the areas in between, and the charge is £15 per hour. Confidentiality and discretion are assured, I’m fully insured and CRB certified, and character references are available.

I am an experienced registered nurse of over 40 years. I have studied with the Open University, obtaining a science degree, which included courses concerning mental health, dementia and management. I have worked in many specialities but in the last 20 years I have been the deputy matron of a dementia care home and a staff nurse in care of the elderly. I have been befriending for the past 18 months. In my spare time, I like reading, music, cinema, cats and wildlife, travelling, socialising - particularly with “ladies who lunch” and enjoy a cup of coffee. There’s nothing like a good chat! If you’re interested in finding out more, please contact me to arrange a free informal meeting. I can then introduce myself in person, and you can see if this service is what you want. Phone me on 01736 756273 or 07759 326737, or email helenveale@live.co.uk Helen Veale
