DESIGN THREE investigates the architectural potentials of structure and space through the operation of aggregation. In this module, we were to propose architectural forms through the aggregation of volumetric programme components, creating a balance between repetition and singularity. Taking this concept further, my unit (Unit 3) sought to explore the potential of aggregated architecture through the thought framework of constructing voids; which is to say, an aggregation of forms through subtraction.
paradoxical; how can we build through the definition of absences? How are we to think in terms of operations of voiding, subtracting, removing, emptying as material processes of construction? Thinking through this lens, the unit asks to construct inhabitable spaces/atmospheres through the prolliferation of volumes, to think abstractly about form-formation in order to construct a syntax that manages to forward radical ideas, forms liberated, for a lapse of time, from the disempowering burden of trivally posited, mundane questions.
As architecture is a practice of construction (additive), thinking through this framework might seem

EXPERIMENTATION "LIGHT | HEAVY" + "ORDER | CHAOS" The design process began with experimentations in 2 spatial and architectural conditions: Light & Heavy, and Order & Chaos. The aim of experimenting with these chosen conditions was to identify as well as discover potential forms and volumes (in both positive and negative space)that possess unique architectural atmospheres. Architectural atmospheres in Order & Chaos were accessed further through the lens of architectural erosion and atmospheres over time.

EXPERIMENTATION + ITERATION [ STEP 1A ] LIGHT | HEAVY 1. FORM "How does one perceive a form as light or heavy?" "Can there be both lightness and heaviness in the same form/volume?" 2. ATMOSPHERE "Heavier atmospheres meaning more tense, constraining and imposing?" "Lighter atmospheres meaning openness and free-ness?"

SPATIAL ANALYSIS [ STEP 3A ] FINAL MODULE [1] SUSPENDED FORMS Tapered masses that are suspended from the ceiling seem light in nature yet enforcing a heavy atmosphere by pushing down onto the individual. [2] ALTERNATING HEIGHTS Suspended forms that differ in heights create variation in the vertical space above the individual. [3] PRESSURE > RELEASE Refers to spaces that transition from tense atmospheres to one of freedom and openness (heaviness to lightness).

EXPERIMENTATION + ITERATION [ STEP 1B ] ORDER | CHAOS 1. ORDER A result of controlled planning. 2. ATMOSPHERE A result of natural transformations that breed within/on order.
COMPLETE UNCONTROLLED CHAOS Spaces created by free sculpting and unregulated application of chloroform to experiment with space-creating potential forms by dissolution.

OPERATIONAL PROCESS + OBSERVATIONS [ STEP 2B ] ORDER | CHAOS : INTERNAL CHAOS DOWNWARD DRIP A hole is made at the X and drips are applied from top and down into the module. Subsequent drips are applied along the similar downward axis as the first drip.
SIDEWAYS DRIP Shallow hole is made at the X and drip is aplied from side. Subsequent drips are applied along the similar sideways axis as the first drip.

OPERATIONAL PROCESS + OBSERVATIONS [ STEP 2B ] ORDER | CHAOS : EXTERNAL CHAOS CLUSTER DRIP A short segment of straw is cut and inserted into the cluster, at the point in between 2 tapered modules. The chloroform drips don through the straw and along the module, down onto the units below. The reaction of chloroform on 4 different types of cluster configurations were recorded and analysed spatially.

ORGANISATION "RESPONDING TO THE SITE" This semester, the studio's approach to site the site was unconventional, in that site analysis and the design's response came secondary as part of the design solution; more emphasis was placed on creative experimentation and volumetric studies. Nevertheless, the studio attempted to adapt their designs based of the characteristics of the site. In the case of this project, solids and voids were studied as apart of the site's character.

CLUSTER CONFIGURATIONS ROTATION Through the employing of the operational process of rotating, the cluster formed by the tapered module is transformed, leading to the creation of multiple iterations of a cluster. Each iteration is different and would offer different dwelling experiences. This would be taken into account when organising the final form of the building.

RESPONDING TO SITE BUILDING ORGANISATION After analysing the site by viewing it through the lens of Lightness and Heaviness, the many iterations from the cluster configurations were specifically selected and arranged in a way that would respond to the Lightness and Heaviness across the various heights on site.

TIMESCALE "CHANGING ATMOSPHERES OVER TIME" The end design intervention seeks at utilising the chaos* to morph spaces over time, redefining the dwelling whilst incorporating architectural atmospheres of Lightness and Heaviness. The chaotic construction of voids by the external chaos should induce architectural erosion that would create new dwelling opportunities and experiences, or enhance existing architectural atmospheric experiences over time. *external climatic conditions (rain) of the site that will induce architectural erosion of spaces and facade.

CLUSTER TIMESCALE CLUSTER EROSION OVER TIME Exploration in cluster dissolution with chloroform and foam were utilised to discover how the cluster would appear over a timescale of 10 years. Results were accessed through the lens of alternating heights, as well as pressure and release; ideas that were discussed in experimentations in Lightness and Heaviness.
