LAKEVIEW — Senior night was a good one for the Lakeview Wildcats girls basketball team. While not much of a contest, the Wildcats used Friday’s 61-17 win over Hesperia as a tune-up for Monday’s Class B district tournament opener. Sadie Massie’s 22 points and Maddie Shurlow’s 13 assists helped pace the Wildcats to victory. “This is what we needed,” Lakeview coach Dave King said. “Without disrespecting Hesperia, it would have been nice to face someone a little farther along, but we needed to play well and I thought we did. We worked on a few things, but didn’t try to show too much.” Lakeview (15-5, 6-4) was focused on preparing for the Belding Redskins, who they will face on Monday. That meant starters remaining in the game longer than they normally would in a 44-point win. “I talked to Hesperia’s coach before the game and he understood,” King said. “I told him we needed to work on things and he was fine with it. I had some starters on the floor late, which wasn’t my plan, but we did get some junior varsity players some minutes.”

HESPERIA (4-15, 0-10) — Nowlin 2 0-0 5, Tracy 0 3-4 3, M. Stitt 2 3-4 7, Golden 1 0-0 2. Totals: 5 6-8 17. 3-point goals: Nowlin. Total fouls: 3. Fouled out: None. LAKEVIEW (15-5, 6-4) — Massie 11 0-0 22, Nielsen 3 0-0 7, Lint 1 0-0 2, Lake 1 0-0 2, Johnson 4 2-2 11, Roper 1 0-0 3, Shurlow 3 0-0 6, Heady 4 0-0 4. Lakeview’s Sadie Massie grabbed a rebound and quickly turned up court with the ball during Friday’s game at home against Hesperia. Massie scored 22 points.
Hesperia (4-15, 0-10) coach Mike Fosburg was disappointed with his team’s play. He didn’t feel like they wanted to play. “We didn’t play very well. We came out wanting to having a good effort, playing together and having fun,” he said. “We went 0-for-3 on all those things. We didn’t come
out to play and didn’t play hard at all.” Lakeview allowed just five field goals all game long. Two of those came in the first quarter as the Wildcats jumped out to a 16-7 lead after eight minutes. “It’s tough. Lakeview is a very good team and I don’t want to take anything away
from them,” Fosburg said. “They are definitely better than we are, but we wanted to go into districts on a better note than we have been.” Lakeview found that better note and allowed just 10 points in the final three quarters — two in each of the second and third quarters. “I just wanted us to play hard. We have not had the best week of practice,” King said. “It’s hard with all these days off. I wanted us to play hard the entire game and we did. “We shared the ball pretty well. I thought we were active with our hands defensively and we mixed up our defenses a little bit,” he added. Kirsten Johnson added 11 points and Rylee Nielsen seven points. Shurlow added eight steals and five rebounds to her line. Mariah Stitt led the Panthers with seven points. See Lakeview, Page 2B

he Flat River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will stage its 20th Anniversary Hunting Heritage Banquet on March 7. This year the chapter will also offer a JAKES hunt, a Wheelin’ Deer Hunt and other great events. They expect an excellent year, and it is an outdoor organization we should all support. For further information or tickets to the event, you may contact Ron Hopkins at (616) 794-1116. Oh, I mentioned “other things.” Well, I suppose I should mention our winter visit up to the “elder-hostel.” Yes, the cabin, which we sometimes call our elder-hostel, or the place where us older folks can go to get some rest or R & R. Only problem is that during the winter we need dogs and a sled to pull us in to the cabin, particularly in the sort of weather we’ve recently had! But that isn’t all the fun we have. Getting to the cabin down that half-mile torture trail is just where it all starts. Then there’s getting the place up to a temperature above freezing and the fun of using an outhouse! (Some of you may have similar places that you hardly ever get to in the winter, so you know the fun). Then there’s the night, when we’re all snug in our beds, and the snoring is raising the roof or’e our heads. Let me tell you, it’s like living in the land of “snorefius.” Twice on that first night I found myself relocating from the sleeping quarters to a spot out beside the wood stove, where the snorefius was not quite so profound! Ah, but the food we had. We ate in the manner in which kings may have plagiarized, played cards as though we were all rich and in general made a nuisance of ourselves. Fact is, how we got out of there and back I’ll never know! Well now, enough of that. But do remember the NWTF banquet coming up and plan to attend. We’re certain to have a good time... at least as good a time as I and my cronies had up at the elder-hostel!
