Newaygo stuns Lakeview with late touchdown By Bruce Bentley
Daily News sports editor
LAKEVIEW — For nearly 45 minutes, the Lakeview Wildcats were on its way to a season opening, third consecutive victory. If only, the final three minutes were different. With Lakeview punting from its own 39-yard line, the snap sailed high and punter Brandon Bisel could not corral the ball. The Newaygo Lions recovered on the Wildcats’ 25-yard line with just 3:16 remaining in the game. Less than two minutes later, Newaygo reached the end zone with 1:17 showing and capped the drive with an extra point to stun the Wildcats with a 21-20 victory on Friday night at Kos Field. It was the second consecutive season the Lions defeated Lakeview by just one point. “I told them, this has to be a bump in the road,” Lakeview coach Sean Rinehart said. “All of our goals from the beginning of the season are still intact. All of the things we want to accomplish are still in front of us. It can go one of two ways, they can let this bother them the rest of the season or we can learn from it and move on.” Still the loss stings, especially, with the Lions (3-0) scoring twice in the final 4:28. Lakeview led 14-0 at halftime and 20-8 after three quarters. “I got after my kids. We have been together for a year and a half now,” Newaygo coach Andy Busch said. “That is some of the toughest pressure we’ve seen and the first time we’ve really been bottled up. I called some kids out.” It worked as the Lions outscored the Wildcats 21-6 in the second half. “I’m proud of these kids for stepping up, answering and getting it done,”
Lakeview senior Garrett Cavendish carries the ball during the first half of the Wildcats’ loss on Friday night.
Busch said. “The pressure was on them and they completely improved 100 percent in the second half.” All three of Newaygo’s touchdowns came on runs by junior Reo Heinzman. The final one coming from seven yards out to tie the game at 20-20. After going for two-point conversions after their first two scores, the Lions attempted an extra point and were successful. “He is a stud, a fast, tough and gritty kid,” Busch said of Heinzman. “He is going to carry the load for us, in this game and in the future.” Heinzman finished with 87 yards rushing. He also had three- and fiveyard scores. “They execute everything they do very well,” Rinehart said. “We had some
opportunities. We had a chance to get a fumble recovery and an interception. Those things add up if we don’t get them. To be a great football team, we have to bounce off those things and finish a team off.” Rinehart said the botched snap rattled his team. “I think it did. They saw the field position and started thinking about not having a loss yet,” Rinehart said. “They (Newaygo) made a good play (the touchdown). It’s tough to lose to the same team by one point two years in a row.” Lakeview (2-1) opened the scoring with a six-yard run by John ZuluagaTorres and an extra point by Caleb Ruvalcaba. Brad Hamlin caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Nate Shurlow with just 19.1 seconds left in the half (extra point was good) for a 14-0 lead. Newaygo answered with a score on its second possession of the second half on a run and two-point conversion by Heinzman. Four minutes later, the Wildcats scored on a 10-yard run by Garrett Cavendish. The extra point was no good for a 20-8 advantage. Newaygo’s second score capped a 6:32 minute drive — that included a flea flicker — and made the 20-14. The Lions missed a two-point conversion. “We started believing. We started blocking our assignments and we started believing,” Busch said. “They pulled it together and got it done.” Newaygo hosts Reed City on Friday, while the Wildcats travel to Chippewa Hills. bbentley@staffordgroup.com (616) 548-8290
Belding now 3-0, tops Coopersville 54-35 By Andrew Roberts

BELDING — The Belding football team continued to show its ability to be explosive on the offensive side of the ball Friday night in its Ottawa-Kent Blue Conference opener at Rudness Field. The Redskins scored 36 points in the opening half to take a commanding lead into the third en route to a 54-35 win. “We’ve been fortunate that last three weeks that our guys have come out focused and have executed,” Schwander said. “We felt coming in that Coopersville was a goob team and we have just executed from week one to week two and this week. “It’s huge to start the league season 1-0, but to start 3-0 is even bigger. You want to win your opener and we did. You want to win your first game on the road and we did. We have goals to make the playoffs and win the conference and this win tonight puts us that much closer to that.” After stopping Coopersville on its opening drive, the Belding offense put together a drive of 90 yards, that included a 43-yard run by junior Sam Beckett, and concluded it with a twoyard plunge into the end zone by quarterback Kole Hart.

Belding’s Cameron Dombrowski returns an interception for a 60-yard touchdown on Friday night.
The Redskins added to their lead as time expired in the first quarter when senior Cameron Dombrowski intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a score. Kicker Gio Delgado added his second PAT to give Belding a 14-0 lead after one. Following a three-and-out for the Broncos, junior running back Michael
Walker completed another scoring drive with a 68-yard TD run. Neil McCully tacked on the two-point conversion. With just under 5:00 left in the half, Beckett found the end zone on an 18-yard run and Delgado added the extra point to extend the Belding lead to 29-0. Coopersville finally got on the board with 3:07 left in the second on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Ben Cushway to Logan Pametta. Koby Buth added the extra point to make it a 29-8 game. Belding tacked on another score just before the half. Despite committing four penalties, including three on consecutive plays, the Redskins were able to convert on fourth and 16 when Hart hit McCully on a 32-yard pass for a touchdown. Delgado added another PAT and the Redskins took at 36-7 lead into the locker room. Coopersville’s defense stood tall on the opening drive of the third. The offense responded for the Broncos with a five-play drive that ended with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Cushway to Nate Darcy to cut Belding’s lead to 36-13. The Redskins ate up over six minutes on 16 plays on their next drive, then See Belding, Page 2B
attended an Indian Pow-Wow in north Grand Rapids over the weekend, and it was not only an entertaining experience but educational as well. No, I have no Indian blood that I’m aware of, Woods and but I was Waters born and By Ed raised in Gilbert what was really Indian territory during my really young years, and attended school with some Indian kids. That was up in the woods north of Petoskey and until the age of 9. When you’re young it is just the way things are, and you don’t recall much of those years later on. However, I do remember an old Indian fellow that used to come and visit my father on somewhat of a regular basis. At the time I was too young to realize what was going on, but later was informed by one of my four brothers that my dad and and an uncle were somewhat in the business of making bathtub gin, and that old Indian simply loved that “recipe,” (as they say on the Waltons series). Now, Indian readers, please do not take offense at this, because to my knowledge the stuff was enjoyed mostly by my dad and uncle and other close relatives. Well now, sitting and listening to those pow-wow drums beating and watching the dances just seemed to get into my blood, and I found myself taking part in a veterans dance, where veterans were asked to join in the circle of dancers. I enjoyed it, but my wife later informed me that she was wondering when she would need to enter the circle and pick me up off the ground! There is no doubt about it, the Indians in that part of Michigan and elsewhere got a bad deal back in those old days. Now, however, they have not only the casinos to help them but many hunting and fishing rights have been restored that allow them good work, excellent outdoor lifestyles, and a good income. One of the things we mostly enjoyed at that powwow was the many sales booths that had to offer Indian items and food as well. Wife Ethel had her eye on a fine bracelet for some time, so we could hardly leave without it, and we did not. I discussed the pow-wow with several tribe members, and it was made up of many different groups or tribes, with many of the participants dressed in costumes that were very colorful and authentic. I’m certain that I’ll attend another pow-wow when it comes near my neck of the woods, and if one wants to enjoy a great time they could consider doing so as well.
