Vestaburg High School valedictorian Ashlyn Jerome has had a hectic high school career, which suits her just fine. She plans to continue excelling this fall, when she heads off to the University of Michigan. — DN Photo | Mike Taylor

oes Vestaburg graduating senior Ashlyn her life. It starts with a career as a nurse anesthetist, Jerome keep busy? Is the sun hot? Is snow followed by a husband and kids of her own. “I don’t have a backup plan,” she said. “I know that cold? Does Tuesday follow Monday? this is what I want and I’ll do anything to achieve it.” In a word, yes. And then some. For a young woman with such laser-like focus, it’s Were Hollywood to make a movie of Ashlyn’s high school career, they’d have to give the part of her char- something of an anomaly that her choice of career acter to twins in order to cover all the bases while came about as a result of happenstance. Thanks to her academic, sports and extra-curricular record, she’ll be attending with a full scholar- after my tonsillectomy,” she explained. “I woke up at 3:30 a.m. covered in blood and I was horrified. My dad ship. The eldest child of Marie and Russell Jerome, rushed me to the hospital where wonderful nurses Ashlyn has lived in Vestaburg her entire life. Though took care of me for three days. I want to help people her roots there grow deep, she says she’s excited to like the nurses helped me.” Ashlyn admits she’s nervous about the “size differbegin this next chapter in her academic and social career. She expects it to be every bit as full as the years preceding it. During her freshman, sophomore and junior years at VHS, Ashlyn played softball and basketball. She served as president of the student council, was vice president of the National Honors MIKE TAYLOR Society, participated mtaylor325@gmail.com in Model United Nations and was a member of Varsity Quiz Bowl. In her “spare time” (and those quotation marks are there for good reason), she works at the Edmore McDonalds, O’Connor’s Shoes in Greenville, tutors at Montcalm Community College and finally, babysits occasionally. She also takes college classes along with her high school curriculum. “I really don’t have much free time,” Ashlyn said, in what could serve as the dictionary definition of the word “understatement.” Was she surprised when she was named valedictorian of her graduating class? Was anyone? “I wasn’t really surprised,” she said. “Mr. Bloomfield, our counselor, told me that I would be valedictorian at the end of the fall semester of my fresh- Ashlyn Jerome will be entering the University of Michigan’s nursing program this fall. man year.” In coming years, she hopes for a career in nursing and also plans to at some point get It’s also not surprising that Ashlyn has a plan for married and raise kids of her own. — DN Photo | Mike Taylor

ence” between VHS and the University of Michigan. Until now, she’s never been part of anything larger than MCC. Though she’s excited by the prospect of new experiences and faces, the siren song of smalltown life likely will pull at her heartstrings indefinitely. Even so, she intends her first steps onto a larger stage will be made with confidence and an eye toward the future, rather than the past. “I’ll miss the tight-knit community of Vestaburg most when I leave,” she said. “Everybody knows everybody and everyone is so helpful to one another. I’m happy that I’ll be able to experience new things. I’ve had the same scenery at Vestaburg for 18 years so change will be exciting.” She lists her favorite things about her years in high school as her teachers and some of her fellow students. These she will miss. Cafeteria food and online classes? Not so much so. As the only member of her graduating class headed for U of M, she knows it will be hard to hang on to her high school friendships. Even so, she can’t wait to get started, to make that next move toward the future. VHS counselor Bill Bloomfield – who predicted Ashlyn’s eventual valedictorian status three years ago – had nothing but good things to say about this star pupil. “Ashlyn is highly dedicated, driven and very active in school sports, clubs and student government,” Bloomfield said. “She has worked her way to the U of M, literally, holding down a part-time job as she has completed both her high school classes and 30 college credits.” Vestaburg principal Jennifer Warner-Leja admitted she didn’t really know Ashlyn all that well, owing to fact Ashlyn was one of those students who just didn’t require much administration attention to succeed. “To be honest, as an administration team, we have not had many conversations with Ashlyn,” WarnerLeja said. “The reason for this is simple, she is just that great of a kid. She not only exemplifies, but she also exceeds the ideal student-athlete. She has overcome adversity in a way that demonstrates true strength, commitment, and motivation. “Our school community is very proud of the young woman she is, and we are certain that her future endeavors will be successful. We are pleased and honored to soon call her an alumnus of Vestaburg Community School.”
