Dear Lakeview High School Class of 2020,

T

his year was not a normal year, but you are not a normal class. You are exceptional; you deserve to stand out. And knowing you, each one of you will continue to stand out in great ways. Amongst you are future engineers, welders, farmers, medical professionals, military service members, store managers, and business executives in the making.

While your class motto is “Our homework isn’t done, but we sure are,” you have never lived up to it. It is indeed fitting for the situation that has abruptly ended your senior year; however, it is quite contrary to who you truly are with respect to your desire to succeed. You have spent countless late nights working towards your goals. You have challenged yourself by taking courses that pique your interest and force you to think in different ways. You have gotten jobs and worked hard to save for and purchase your first car. You have put the time in during practice, when no one is watching, to reach your athletic accomplishments. You have achieved academic accolades and honors in technical areas that deserve to be shouted from mountain tops. You have not just fulfilled the expectations you have for yourselves; you have exceeded them. I have seen you overcome obstacles that many people never have to go through in a lifetime, but never once did you quit. Your creativity and problem-solving astound me. Your hearts overwhelm me. Through all of the ugly cries, mom talks, borrowed spoons, and dirty coffee cups, you have all become young people of whom I am proud. My colleagues and I are honored to not just have taught you, but to watch you grow into the wonderful young adults you are. The examples that you have set are high, and the shoes you have left to be filled are large. Be proud of who you are and where you are from, but also, please, never be afraid to try something new. On behalf of the Lakeview Community Schools family, congratulations!

Lakeview Dear Class of 2020,

D

ay 1: It’s the first day of high school and we’re nervous beyond compare. The massive seniors and juniors push by us as we walk into a place that seems foreign. We find our friends who we have known for years, and discuss how exciting it is to be in high school now. We look around and see all the upperclassmen emanating a persona that seems more than human. Little do we know that in four short years we will be exactly where they are now. Day 143: We have made it halfway through freshman year and begun to immerse ourselves in the school. After joining a few clubs, we build friendships with the people we once were intimidated to talk to. It’s strange to find out that the seniors and juniors are people just like us. The once foreign school has started to feel like home. Day 413: Homecoming week sophomore year begins. The chaos of the week’s events crescendo with spirit days in full force, the hallways decorated, and the classes at each others’ throats for the homecoming trophy. The Friday night game under the lights is one to remember with the whole crowd cheering. It seems like the entire town is in the stands showing their school spirit. Saturday’s dance is filled with mediocre music and dancing like no one was watching. Day 743: We are two weeks into junior year, and the rumors are true. So. Much. Homework. It is definitely the hardest year so far and we have the SAT coming up. We

are all driving now; it’s strange seeing a parking lot full of the friends you still picture as kindergarten buddies. The upcoming fall signals the start of fun times to come at sporting events, club activities, and after school ice cream. Day 830: We got our SAT results back today and the emotions are high. Some cry, some cheer, and some sit in silence thinking about their future. This was despite the pleas of caring teachers to make us recognize that we are more than a number. All day, it seems like that’s all anyone is talking about. Then comes the question of where everyone is going to college or whether or not you have a good enough score to get into the big-name schools. Some people seem like fish out of water when it came to the future, just flopping around with no real direction. Others are cemented in their school and are determined to do anything they have to to get accepted. Day 987: We are over the hill. Senioritis begins to kick-in as we have completed the hardest work of our final year. To pass the time we look through pictures reminiscing and laughing at the bus rides, dances, and late nights we will never forget. Memories of our teams that were more like families, teachers that were more like mentors, and weekend shenanigans that were more like comedy shows, begin to flood back. Day 1,213: Today we realized that there are no more memories to be made. The last time we went to school was just like any

other day, laughing, joking about the virus, procrastinating standard work, and getting ready for spring events. The realization that we never will get the chance to truly appreciate the classmates and memories around us is disheartening and leaves us only with what we had before: something incomplete. Today: It’s day one all over again, and we’re nervous beyond compare. No one really knows what they are doing or what’s going on; all we know is we are done with high school. Although the memories made and lessons learned are invaluable, the most important gift we gained was the family we created. Our Lakeview family formed us into who we are today from our parents to our staff, to our community. Despite our uncertainties, especially in times like today, we need to hold our Lakeview family close to persevere to tomorrow. Tomorrow: The future is something that many people have trouble conceptualizing. The idea of moving on from what you know to bigger and better things is very difficult to grasp, especially when you have so many fond memories of the place you are leaving. Although saying goodbye is difficult, the future is bright and we must keep an open mind as we progress into uncertain times. New “day ones” are always hard but it’s where new families, adventures, and experiences are created. Just remember, if you blink, you may just miss these days.

ongratulations on the accomplishment of fulfilling the requirements for graduation from Montabella High School. This is a culminating accomplishment of several years of work and is also the beginning of a new adventure for each of you whether it be in a career or additional education. You did it! I know that this has been an interesting end to your senior year and I know some of you are disappointed with the way things have ended. This situation might be the first opportunity in your adult life to respond to a situation that is out of your control. I wish I could tell you that this is an isolated situation and that you will never be in a situation where decisions are made that you can not control, but that just simply is not the case. This situation certainly is unique but you will be faced with many situations in your future that feel “unfair.” The true challenge is how you respond. Many of you have already shown passion, patience and advocacy during this unprecedented time. These characteristics will assist you in being successful in the next phase of your life. Find your passion for a cause or a career and pour your heart into it. Fight for what you believe in with respect and dignity. This will require patience and sometimes an open mind, exactly what many of you have displayed during this situation. Use these skills to propel you in a positive direction.

We all hope that we will have the opportunity to honor you and your accomplishments with a ceremony but that is not the definition of your accomplishments. Let the lessons that you have learned through this difficult situation and your years at Montabella be the launch of your ability to adapt, adjust and preserve. Don’t let the Coronavirus win this battle, fight back with success. I believe in you and the great things that you will do in the future.

Montabella

Dear Class of 2020,

A

s a freshman, our senior year seemed like it was miles away. However; as each year passed, we realized that our last year was soon approaching. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing that while all that hard work over the years will pay off soon, this is the last year that we seniors will spend together. There are many things that my fellow seniors and I looked forward to since the beginning of the school year. This year was our last homecoming game, and for just about all my friends, their last time playing in the band during halftime. Many of us were in the homecoming parade for the last time as students, whether we were playing in the band, riding horses or in cars, or walking with younger siblings. We would also experience the last of the many dances we had attended years before (homecoming dance, snowball and prom). The athletes (myself included) would experience the last practice, last bus ride together to the last away game, last home game, and the last time we hear the crowd cheering our names

and cheering us on as we play. Not only did we experience the last of a lot of things, but also the first. We had our first Senior Sunrise together, which was a small group of us seniors getting up long before dawn who met up on the hill overlooking our football field and watched the sun come up before class. We athletes also had our first and last MVT Night, as well as Senior Night. As I have heard from many former seniors, senior year always seems to go by too quickly. This year was no exception, but our year had been cut short by something that was out of our control. Many seniors who play a spring sport will not be able to play this year, and our last prom has been postponed, just like our graduation ceremony and our class trip, things that every high schooler looks forward to. Despite the short year, I’ll be leaving Montabella with some good memories from this year such as watching my younger sister walk out on the football field with the homecoming court as the freshmen class representative, playing with that same sister on

the varsity volleyball team, going to dances with my best friends, watching our varsity football team at the playoffs (and having a snowball fight during the game), and one of my proudest memories — making it all the way to the district finals with my varsity basketball team despite being told by many that we “would never make it past the first round.” Yes, senior year means that we will say goodbye to many things and many people, but it doesn’t mean we will forget the memories or the friends we made during our time here as we move forward in our lives; whether that means going to college, joining the military, getting a job or starting a family. We are still the Mustangs Lauren Jordan of 2020.

Throughout our time together, we have all encountered some personal difficulties. No doubt everyone of you has had bumps in the road. Those bumps have strengthened you. Because of the struggles, you have grown and learned a great deal, becoming a much stronger version of yourself. I know it is extremely difficult to see the positive when we are in the midst of our struggles; however, the most difficult times in your life will provide an opportunity for you to grow the most. Even though this is not how you had envisioned the conclusion of your senior year, know that this challenging time will help you to grow and develop in ways that are beyond what you can imagine.

Elijah Bouck

know it may have seemed as if this time would never come, but here you all are, graduating! I am so thankful and honored that I was able to be a part of your life throughout our time together at TCHS. You have made such a positive impact on my heart. I will always cherish the hugs, the laughs, the good cries, the talks, the smiles and each of your unique personalities.

I am often asked why I am always happy. I believe that happiness is a choice that you make. I CHOOSE to find the light in the darkest of times. I CHOOSE to have hope and faith that life will work out. Like I have always said, the only thing in this world you have control over is you; your thoughts, your actions, and your words. Don’t let the things you have no control over cloud your ability to be happy and prevent you from reaching your goals.

Mikenna Buyze

Throughout your time at TCHS, you have had many teachers, administrators, family members, friends and community members guide and support you along the way. As you enter into this next stage in your life, surround yourself with those who will help to make a positive impact on who you are and encourage you to reach your goals.

Dear Classmates,

T

this year has by far been the most unique year of our lives. Never in a million years would we all have imagined that the best part of senior year would be taken away so abruptly. However, we can’t let that ponder on how we remember our final chapter of high school. Looking back at the beginning of the school year, our class was able to participate in new traditions. From painting parking spaces to new Homecoming festivities, fall is something we will never forget. Our classmates in the marching band even made it to State Finals for the fourth year in

a row. Moving into winter, new events were created to bring all of us together to cheer on our athletic programs. We were able to watch both of our basketball teams work hard to win numerous games, as well as having the opportunity to watch a few of our classmates wrestle during a school event. Many of our classmates worked hard to win numerous athletic awards, ranging from a player of the year, making it to State Finals for bowling, and even having a classmate accomplish 100 career wins in wrestling. We topped winter off by having one last Snowcoming pep assembly and dance. Though our spring sports and activities

were cut short, we should all still be proud of each other for the hard work we have achieved so far this school year. All in all, we spent this year creating memories that we will cherish forever as we go our separate ways. Though right now might seem tough and unfair, we should all stay positive and look forward to the next time when we can gather once again and celebrate us and our accomplishments. Not to mention how awesome of a story our experience during this pandemic will make someday for our future spouses, children, grandchildren, co-workers, and so much more. Stay strong Class of 2020. ey, the “Class of 2020” will always be known for having the most epic senior skip day! This pandemic has definitely come as a surprise to all of us. Although we were all excited at first about getting time off school, we were definitely not expecting this to change all of our senior year expectations.

While I know we are all disappointed that the pandemic has canceled many of the things we were all looking forward to like spring sports, prom, our senior trip, and maybe even graduation, we must not let it dampen our spirits. We have all been through tough times in our lives and we can overcome these tough times together. We have still accomplished so much — and complet-

o pretend that anyone has the power to use words as a replacement for the end of your senior year is insulting. However, I hope this letter will encourage you to grow from this experience rather than being resentful, despite that this emotion is understandable. As many of you experienced before this pandemic, during it and will continue to experience after it is over, our best-laid plans in life do not always become our reality. We constantly readjust, reprioritize and begin again. These life skills are so difficult to teach from inside a classroom or by opening a textbook. These are the lessons where pure experience truly provides this education. This experience taught you how to deal with a wide range of emotions, trials and triumphs, and forced you to readjust what you thought your reality at this time of year would be, resulting in your growth. This growth was exponential and will be a positive influence in your future. Time will move forward and the clock will not stop. However, you will cherish each memory you make with family and friends just a little bit more. Going to class or work will become more of an opportunity and less of a chore. When life is so busy that you wonder how to complete each task, you will take a moment to hit the pause button and realize that you will accomplish your goals. Finally, when the time is right, you will not hesitate to ask for just five more minutes. My pride in this senior class and the lessons I learned from each of you is something I will embrace. Know that you will always have me in your corner, cheering you on through your struggles, successes and, most importantly, your journey every step of the way. Congratulations on your accomplishments! Remember that while the pandemic made the end of your year look different, your journey and the outcome of your high school diploma will remain stronger. I look forward to celebrating with you.
