What is a Certificate of Deposit and How Does it Work?
A Certificate of Deposit (CD), also referred to as a share certificate, are a secure investment available from a bank or credit union. They typically pay higher interest rates than savings accounts. Although you are getting a higher interest rate, your money has to remain secure. Although, you are able to release funds, with a penalty. When opening a CD, you'll need to choose how long you want to keep your funds locked up. This time period is referred to as the term. A longer term CD usually has a higher interest rate.
At the end of your CD's term, the CD matures. You will need to decide what to do next. You may take your funds out or you may Lakeview | Howard City Trufant enroll them into a new CD. If you don't do anything, your CD |will automatically invest over for the same term.

After battling a number of different trials and tribulations throughout her four years of high school, Danielle Carpenter, 18, will be graduating from Lakeview Community Schools this June and will then be headed to Michigan State University to study hospitality. — DN Photo | Brandon Schreur
‘It happened, we made it and I’m me’
Lakeview High School senior reflects on past high school, mother diagnosed with breast cancer during sophomore year
F
or Danielle Carpenter, the road to graduation hasn’t necessarily been an easy one. It was during the summer between her freshman and sophomore year when Carpenter’s mother, Kicia Carpenter, was diagnosed with breast cancer. “It all happened right as I was getting ready to start my sophomore year,” Danielle said. “It was hard because I had to keep up with schoolwork while I also wanted to be with my family. I was fortunate enough to have a really good principal at the time, as he’d let me go to my mom’s doctors appointments to be with her when I needed to be. It was a lot of balancing BRANDON SCHREUR school days with days when I needed to be bschreur@staffordgroup.com there.” The cancer, Danielle says, came out of nowhere and completely blind-sided her entire family. “It was really hard because we didn’t expect any of this,” she said. “…When I was a lot younger, my dad also had cancer, too. When we got this news, we knew what it meant.” Still, Danielle was able to push through it all and remarkably managed to maintain her 3.5 GPA while her family was going through all of this. “It might have gone down just a little bit, but I still wanted to keep it up and managed to do so,” she explained. It was during Danielle’s junior year that she received the good news that her mother’s cancer had gone into remission. “She’s been doing really well ever since then,” Danielle said. “In the future, there might be some little things they have to do for upkeep, but we’re mostly done with it — which is something that’s, really really awesome.”
Now, Danielle says that her senior year at Lakeview High School has largely been about participating in all of the extracurriculars she missed out on beforehand as she’s currently involved in band, soccer, forensics and drama. When she’s not too busy with all those activities, she can also be found working at Cairns Country Cones in Langston. “I like to tell people that its the best first job ever because I don’t think I’m ever going to get much better than scooping ice cream,” she said with a laugh. “… For most of the year, I haven’t been getting home until 9 p.m. It has been busy, but I get to be busy with stuff that I enjoy doing, so no complaints here. It’s been a good year. There still have been some ups and downs, but nothing compared to what came before it.” With graduation just a few weeks away, Danielle has now turned her mind to the future as she recently found out she was accepted into Michigan State University this coming fall. “I’m going there to study hospitality, and I’m excited to go try something new and be in a different place,” she said. “Long term, I think it would be really cool to run a ski resort out of Colorado. Like, wouldn’t that be awesome? I love to ski, but that’s also related to why I like the idea of hospitality so much. You can use it anywhere or to do just about anything, and it fits into so much.” Kicia, who owns the Lakeview Barbershop, couldn’t be more proud of her daughter, either. “She’s been such an easy kid that I haven’t really had any problems with her,” Kicia said. “She’s just made it really easy, to the point where I can’t believe it’s already time for graduation. I’m very proud of her and I’m excited that she’s excited for what’s next. She’s getting ready to get out there and spread her wings to do all she can. I’m sure that she’s going to be great at all of it.” Looking back on the past four years, Danielle is also certain that she wouldn’t have made it this far with-
out the support of her family. “We all really came together during that time,” she said. “I guess that I couldn’t really ask for anything to be different at this point, because then I wouldn’t be who I am. We can always wish for things to have not happened, but I don’t think it’s worth doing. It happened, we made it and I’m me.”
