course, and found dad sitting at the computer. “What is all this?” Dad asked as he signaled the empty soda cans, the empty potato chip bag, and a candy wrapper, and dishes and ups strewn around. “Well, Dylan and I were playing our ESPN football game on the computer, and I guess we forgot to pick up our stuff,” Micah said. “Could you please pick it up now, before we leave?” Dad asked. “Yes, Dad,” Micah said as he began to gather the dishes and trash. “And you remember that our rules are if I find food and such left by the computer, it means you are not allowed to use the computer for two days?” Dad gently reminded. “But, Dad,” Micah whine, “Dylan was planning on coming over tomorrow afternoon so we could play some more.” “Micah, I know you boys like your snacks. I understand that,” Dad said. “But I don’t like the mess left behind. It attracts flies and ants, it’s dirty, and it is just polite to pick up after yourself.” “But …” Micah began. “This was becoming an issue, we talked about it, and you know the rules,”
Dad said. “I won’t do it again, Dad,” said Micah. “Just bend the rules this one time so Dylan and I can still play tomorrow, and I promise I won’t do it again.” “Micah,” Dad began to explain, “tonight we are going to see the high school team play football. There are rules laid out for high school football. The rules are explained to the referees, the coaches, and the players. Everyone knows the rules.” “So let’s say tonight a guy from the opposing team crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped,” said Dad. “What happens?” “There is a 5 yard penalty on his team,” Micah answered. “And what would happen if the defensive player went to the ref, and said, ‘I won’t do it again. Just bend the rules this one time and I promise I won’t do it again.’?” asked Dad. “The offense would say ‘No way, man!” said Micah. “And what would happen if a player was called for holding?” asked Dad. “Would the referee overlook it every once in a while?” “No, that wouldn’t be
fair to the other team, to be changing the rules like that,” said Micah. “And what would happen if there was a pass interference call?” asked Dad. “As long as the defender apologized, could the ref ignore the infraction?” “No way! If they all knew the rules, and that you are not supposed to do that, then it’s not fair if you don’t follow the rules all the time. It would be like not having any rules at all, and everybody could just do whatever they wanted, with no consequences,” said Micah. “The defense has to take the penalty and grant the first down and the 15 yards to the offense.” “So, if we have rules at home, rules that we all know and understand, what happens when a rule is broken?” asks Dad gently. “We have to follow them, and take the penalty,” Micah said quietly. “So here at home, we sat down and made the rules about snacking by the computer. We decided it was okay to have our snacks by the computer, but if the

Rules: You have to follow them or take the penalty
o you have any rules at your house? Most families have some kind of rules, although the rules are different for different families. My guess is that there are some rules you just Uncle Tater’s don’t like. Tales Micah was having a hard time with some of the rules his dad had made. “Micah,” Dad said late one afternoon. “We leave in ten minutes for the football game.” “OK, Dad,” Micah said from his bedroom. “I’m getting my shirt with the school colors, and I will be right there.” While he waited, Dad decided to check the scores of his favorite teams. When he walked over to the computer desk, he realized that one of the house rules had been broken. “Micah!” Dad shouted. “I’m coming right now, Dad,” said Micah as he ran down the hall, making his way to the back door. “Micah!” Dad called again from the computer. Micah quickly changed

dishes and wrappers and such were left behind there would be a penalty, right?” Dad said. “… and the penalty would be no computer privileges for two days,” Micah remorsefully said. “OK, and you understand we are going to follow the rules, right?” Dad said as Micah nodded. “Now,” said Dad, jumping up from the chair, “we have a game to go watch. Drop your trash off in the waste can, and get the dishes in the sink, and let’s go.” “Go, team!” Micah shouted as he made a beeline for the kitchen. There are rules at home, at school, in sports and all around us. What are one of the rules at your house? What is the penalty if you don’t follow the rules? Could you draw a picture to show me? Or draw a picture of your favorite football player. Send your drawing to “Uncle Tater,” c/o The Daily News, P.O. Box 340, Greenville, MI 48838.
