Greenville’s Nelson’s Speed Shop suffers another devastating fire; 11 departments battle blaze By Kelli Ameling

MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — The owners of Nelson’s Speed Shop have experienced another devastating fire that destroyed their business. At about 1:30 a.m. today, Montcalm Township Fire Department was dispatched to Nelson’s Speed Shop on M-91 in Montcalm Township for a structure fire. “When I got here it was 40 percent involved,” said Montcalm Township Fire Department Lt. Ryan Hyde. The fire started in the back of the business, on the west side of the building, where the warehouse is located, Hyde said. The steel building was a challenge for firefighters to get water into the complex. “Trying to get water on the fire was the biggest problem,” Hyde said. No one from the business was injured. The business was insured. Hyde said firefighters had not yet determined the cause of the fire. The owners of Nelson’s Speed Shop were on the scene of the fire, but they declined to comment at this

Greenville High School graduate a finalist at Meijer Great Choices Student Film Festival n Taylor Sirard makes top 10 for second year in a row at student film festival By Kelli Ameling

Daily News staff writer

GREENVILLE — A recent Greenville High School graduate makes it into the top 10 at the Meijer Great Choices Student Film Festival for the second year in a row. Taylor Sirard, 17, of Greenville, entered a 30-second film called “Diversity” to compete against others students all across the state. “It’s about how diversity is a very

important part of how our world works,” Sirard said. According to the contest’s website, students K-12 create a 30-second public service announcement video focusing on healthy lifestyles, building character and/or celebrating diversity. Winners are then chosen for each category and can be named a top prize winner, who will receive a $2,000, $1,000 or $500 prize package, or named as a trophy winner. Sirard was named as a 2012 Meijer Great Choices Film Festival Trophy Winner. “Last year, I won third place, and this year I knew I hadn’t made the

top three at all,” she said. “I had to be realistic and understand it’s still a big accomplishment. I’m very competitive with my own accomplishments — I always want to improve.” Through her film, Sirard wanted people to see diversity as more than just a subject of race or color. “Without it, there wouldn’t be any competition, creativity or talents,” Sirard said. “Everyone and everything would be the same. The world would be completely bland.” According to a letter sent to Greenville Public Schools
