BELDING — For those looking to buy a home in the city limits of Belding, a fair amount of relief may now be able to come your way. At Tuesday’s city council meeting, members of Belding City Council voted unanimously to approve hous-

ing program guidelines from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Homebuyer Purchase Rehabilitation Program. “It’s an excellent program,” Belding City Manager Randy DeBruine said. “It offers home buyers in the Belding area a chance to fix up their homes, up to $37,500. It may not be an earth shattering amount, but every little bit helps.” According to Belding Housing Commission Executive Director Sharon Carlson, that $37,500 offered

by the MSHADA’s program will provide up to $10,000 in closing costs and down payments and up to $27,500 in rehabilitation money to eligible purchasers when buying a home in the city limits. According to DeBruine, purchasers are required to enter a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and can’t make more than 80 percent of the average median household income in Belding. “We’ve used this program as a tool See Housing, Page 2

Greenville OKs public safety agreement n City hopes last time for year-to-year agreement By Kelli Ameling

Daily News staff writer

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council accepted an agreement with the Police Officers Association of Michigan for the officers of the Greenville Department of Public Safety. After coming out of an executive session on Tuesday, the City Council approved the one-year agreement.

Assistant City Manager Cameron Van Wyngarden said in the past, the agreements have been three-yearlong agreements. However, with the unpredictable budgets, the last two years the agreements were only one-year agreements. “We are hoping this is the last year we have to do one-year agreements,” Van Wyngarden said. The agreement, which begins July 1 and continues through June 30, 2013, has had some adjustments since the previous agreement. Mike Pousak, director of the Greenville Department of Public

Safety said he was pleased they could agree on a contract. “I am pleased we came to an agreement and can continue to work without distractions,” Pousak said. Among the adjustments are the following: • Health and hospitalization will be subject to the same health care plans, including employee contributions, as are implemented for other city employees as of July 1. • The amount the employer will

GREENVILLE — It was on a whim that Audrey Frank opted to compete in the Miss Danish Festival pageant last August. She won that title, earning the right to compete in the Miss Michigan Scholarship pageant and perhaps proceed to the Miss America Scholarship pageant. Following a send-off celebration last Friday at Greenville Area Community Center, Frank, 20, of Greenville, will leave Sunday for Muskegon for rehearsals, public appearances, photos and autograph sessions prior to two evenings of preliminary rounds and Saturday evening’s final round of competition among the 31 contestants vying for the title of Miss Michigan. “I had not even considered the idea of ever being in the Miss Michigan pageant,” said Frank, the daughter of Mark and Kathy Frank. “For a lot of the girls, it has been their goal for years and years, and I hadn’t ever dreamed of it. But this past year I have grown so much and after seeing the other girls who will be at Miss Michigan, it is so exciting and I am glad I am doing it.” The young women will each have a private interview with a panel of judges before competing in preliminary rounds of evening wear, lifestyle and fitness, talent and on-stage question. “I am probably most comfortable with the interview portion,” said Frank, who following a two-year stint with Young Americans is a freshmen majoring in business. “With my job at the Bronco Connection (a Western Michigan University alumni relations association), I talk with people all day. The talent portion has been a lot of work, with evening gown I have to concentrate on walking gracefully and wearing a swimsuit on stage is just awkward.” Frank, a vocalist, had a selection chosen until she sang and played guitar at a Children’s Art Exhibit in Belding. “It was an ’80s theme and Audrey sang and played her acoustic guitar to Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors,’” said Julie Stephens, executive director of the Miss Danish Festival Pageant. “Audrey’s mom suggested she do this instead, I liked the idea, and Audrey felt very comfortable with it.” One very unique aspect of Frank’s appearance will be the fact that she has designed and made much of her wardrobe. “I have worked every day since December sewing on my evening gown. It is a royal blue satin in a halter style and a longer train on the
