Sheridan filmmaker’s first professional video wins Eclipse award By Mike Taylor

SHERIDAN — A former Sheridan resident and recent Cornerstone University graduate is hoping to make a name for herself in the filmmaking industry. If Ashton Spittka’s recent, first professional foray into the field — a music video for Christian rock band We Are Leo — is any indication, she’s hit the ground running. The video, “Oxygen” was filmed earlier this year over a three-day period in Sheridan, outside the derelict Carnation Building. Ashton not only co-wrote and directed the video, but served as producer. Despite her intense involvement, however, she is quick to point out the project was a team effort involving over 30 “extras” along with the primary actors.

“About 60 people were involved,” Ashton said. “Sheridan let us use the abandoned building. On one side we filmed the footage showcasing the band, on the other side we filmed the narrative; the story line of the film. We used a lot of students from my dad’s youth group in Greenville and some adults from Greenville and Grand Rapids.” Ashton’s father, Paul Spittka, is a pastor at Greenville Community Church. He and his wife, Sandy, say they could not be more proud of their daughter’s recent accomplishment. The family moved to Sheridan around six years ago, when Ashton was just a high school sophomore. Even then, Paul says, his daughter was interested in filmmaking. He sees her recent winning of the Eclipse award as just another step

toward her dreams of a career in the industry. “She’s making a mark not just in Greenville, but in West Michigan,” Paul said. “Now she’s going to Nashville where her film will be in the national competition this summer.” As producer of “Oxygen,” Ashton coordinated all the schedules for the We Are Leo band, which hails from Wisconsin, as well as all auditions and rehearsals. We Are Leo is an up and coming band on the Christian charts; its members have been friends of the Spittka family for several years. At one point the band performed live at Greenville Community Church. It was through this association that the band heard of Spittka’s filmmaking talents and enlisted See Filmmaker, Page 2A

BELDING — A matter of academic dishonesty involving a cell phone, answers to a test and several students at Belding High School has resulted in disciplinary action for the students involved. According to Superintendent Sara Shriver, during the week of May 6, Belding High School Principal Brett Zuver became aware of a potential academic dishonesty situation amongst the high school students. “Principal Zuver was alerted that a student’s iPad was found,” Shriver said. “On the iPad, answer documents were found. As with any situation with potential academic dishonesty, Mr. Zuver met with the student. Through his investigation, it came to light several additional students may have had some level of involvement.” Zuver arranged for a class meeting to provide an opportunity for any and all students involved to come forward and discuss their knowledge See Dishonesty, Page 2A

What’s the real date?

D

ear DO Line: I was looking for a can of soup in our closet and just happened to notice the expiration date on the bottom. It had already passed. I grabbed some other cans and noticed other cans with the same problem. I didn’t know if the food was still good DO Line or whether we By Martha should throw the Higbie cans out. Is the expiration date on the can rigid? Is there a time limit where the cans should be thrown out? C.E., Greenville Dear C.E.: We believe just about everyone will agree there is confusion about product dating. And when we began researching your question, we realized it’s confusing because there really IS confusion even among experts and manufacturers. One pakage might have a “sell by” date. Another will show a “best before” date. And, yes, the there is a “use by” date. See DO Line, Page 2A

At left, students of Lakeview High School’s junior class show their pride over a composite score of 19.6 on this year’s ACT test, a marked improvement over the scores of just a few years ago. The parade was held to commemorate the dramatic increase in ACT scores at the school over the course of the past few years. According to LHS Principal Gary Jensen, this was, as far as he knows, the first parade dedicated to academic achievement and definitely the first for Lakeview.
