Way to Diagnose the Damaged Torque Converter of your Car The damaged torque converter of your car sometime provide the same symptoms as the failing transmission. Without knowing the real truth behind the issues, the car owners spend thousands of dollars for repairing or replacing their transmission but the cost of torque converter replacements is considerably cheaper than transmission. However, diagnosing the real causes of transmission issues aren't all easy, but you can go through their signs to recognize the damaged torque converter of your car.

Signs of a damaged torque converter If you want to isolate and diagnose the damaged torque converter of your car, then it's not possible without taking the transmission apart, but there are several signs indicate the damaged torque converter of your car. Such as:-

Overheating When the temperature gauge of your car indicates that your car is overheating, then it could indicate a sign of dropped fluid pressure and problem in the torque converter. If the converter of your car is overheating, then it is unable to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission. As a result, the engine overheating lead to poor throttle response and excessive wear and tear of the internal part of the transmission.

Strange noises If you hear any types of strange noises from your car, then it may be heard due to the failed torque converter. When the torque converter of your car is damaged, then you might hear the strange noises like whirring coming from the bad bearing or the clicking noise which is coming from a broken turbine fin.

Slipping Thus, the torque converter of your car is responsible for translating the engine torque into the hydraulic pressure which is needed for shifting the gears inside the transmission and damage the fins or bearing to delay the shift or the slip out of gears. Slipping in the car also caused when the too much or too less fluid available in the transmission. In this case, you will experience the loss of acceleration and noticeable reduction in the car's fuel economy.

Contaminated fluid The torque converter of your car is filled with automatic transmission fluid. When the fluid is contaminated, then it can damage many parts of the car. As a result, it can wear out the stator or the damaged fins in one of the turbines. If you notice that the color of the fluid is changed and found some black sludge or debris then it could mean that the converter of your car is damaged. In this case, you need to change the fluid and before driving check the fluid level.

Higher stall speed

The stall speed of your is the point at which the RPM of the engine is high, so the torque converter easily transfers the power from the engine to the transmission. In another word, the RPM of the torque converter stops the engine speed from increasing of the transmission output is prohibited. If the torque converter of your car is broken, then it unable to transfer the engine's rotational force into hydraulic pressure perfectly. As a result, the transmission will take a longer time to engage the engine and increase the stall speed.

Shuddering If the lockup clutch inside the torque converter of your car is malfunctioning, then you can experience shuddering around the car in 30-45 mph. Here the sensation is always noticeable and feels like you are driving your car over a rough road and in small bumps. When the converter switches over to direct drive, then the wear out lockup clutches make the transition difficult and result to the sensation. In this situation, you may feel that your car start and stop abruptly and does not go last longer, but when you experience it several times, then check your transmission.

How to diagnose the broken converter The below points provide the step-by-step procedures to diagnose the broken converter of your car and prevent the unusual slipping, lurching forward, shuddering and strange noises. •First, start the car and let them run for a couple of minutes. •Then press the gas down lightly several times. •After that push the brakes and shift the car into drive. •Then slowly shift through each gear. •At last, drive around the block and listen to the sounds carefully when you accelerate.

Avoid the broken converter The torque converter of your car is not damaged instantly, it will take several weeks or months before it completely breaks down. Driving a car when the torque converter is damaged can be risky, so when you find the above signs in your car check it immediately by a qualified mechanic. If necessary then replace it on proper time.
